I was working on my HAED while listening to your "how to make your stitches prettier" and I noticed my stitches becoming significantly prettier as I began following your 3 rules. Thank you. It was a struggle until now.

Thank you so much...this podcast was a wealth of information. You brought up so many issues that I have not considered and I am sure my stitching will be improved. Have a wonderful stitching weekend.

Thank you. My nerdy troubleshooter brain has been working overtime analyzing my stitching and putting together explanations for how to improve stitching quality. It’s been super fun.

I like the reference to past teaching w/o rehashing the entire previous lesson. I agree that stitchimg on a diagonal is cool ☺. Thx again!

Teaching stitching is a lot like teaching science so I use the same skills. Glad you like it!

Laura, I am just setting up for my first full-coverage cross stitch project. Your tutorials and charts are extremely helpful. I am using Pattern Keeper that gives you the option to have the diagonal lines put onto your pattern and show which corner you park. Right now PK is only for Android, but Apple program is coming.

I’ve heard of pattern keeper but am an apple user so haven’t used it yet. I use Good Reader for my charts and they allow for drawing diagonal lines also. Glad you found my videos helpful!

Thank you so much, Laura! That was very helpful! I had horrible distortion along a vertical line. I frogged it and will begin the project again, on the diagonal. Thanks again! 🙂

I’ve been enjoying your videos! I’m always curious how other people stitch full coverage and I’m always looking for ways to improve my stitching. How do you approach a large full coverage with multiple pages when stitching on the diagonal? Do you stop at the bottom of the page and do one page at a time or continue with rows of pages or just stitch the entire piece as a whole entire diagonal? Hope I didn’t confuse you with that question!

I do diagonals for the whole project, regardless of how many pages it is, though the biggest one that I’ve done wasn’t as big as some of the really big ones out there but I think it’d work even on monster sized projects. I use my iPad for my chart so if I have a PDF from the designer, there really aren’t pages to worry about. With paper charts, I take panorama pictures of the chart and convert the photos to PDFs so I can use my iPad. Page breaks with that method are a bit of a hassle but it’s still manageable and having an electronic chart that I can enlarge, put diagonal lines on, and mark off with my finger is great. Im glad you find my videos helpful!

So informative and helpful! I'm about to start my very first ever cross stitch and I'm so glad I found you before I started. I've put the grid on the fabric but now will put in the diagonal lines. I use Knit Companion for my knitting and crochet so I thought I would just upgrade to use it for cross stitch. Do you know if it can put the whole chart together for this or will I just have to do page by page?

Never stitched on the diagonal. My current piece I have started cross country. Could you change to diagonal on this. I'm struggling with it at the moment.

I am so grateful I found these tutorials - thank you for putting so much effort into sharing your knowledge! Quick question ... is the diagonal method only used for full coverage patterns or can you use it on any pattern? You are a great teacher!

    • @piros44
      @piros44  3 роки тому +1

Whether to use the diagonal depends on the pattern. If something has blocks of stitching but open fabric in other regions, I would use the diagonal. I don’t for samplers, which are more cross country with few colors, usually. I think of stitching on the diagonal as going hand in hand with needle parking. I park when there are rows of stitching that switch between colors, and when I have that, I automatically do the diagonal since I like how it makes the pattern appear.

This video is very useful. Thank you so much for the lesson. I like to stitch from the bottom right up but I was never brave to do the diagonal method. Your video makes it all very clear. I'm starting my new project on the diagonal thanks to you.
My only question is, if I start on the bottom right, I should stitch right to left, right?
Thanks in advance and keep the good work. I've learned a lot from your videos.

To start in the bottom right, for rows you will stitch right to left with your start to the stitch being the bottom left hole. If you start in the bottom right and want to stitch columns, you will start the stitch in the upper left. In both cases, doing it this way will give you the thread direction change that gives uniform stitches. I see the difference of it in my own projects. Ever since I’ve paid attention to changing thread direction, my results are stunning. It’s interesting that this doesn’t matter for sampler stitching because each stitch isn’t surrounded by others so slight irregularity in the stitches doesn’t matter since there are fewer surrounding stitches to compare to.

Once again! Awesome!? Did you purchase your wooden laying tool online? It's love like I really like it. Or is it a laying tool? I felt like it was!

I bought my laying tool on eBay years ago. I looked on my orders page but that seller doesn’t exist anymore.

I thought the vertical line showing was due to a pre-existing crease in the ground fabric.

The examples of column lines are from ironed projects so it’s not a wrinkle, it’s actually something in the stitching and/or fabric. I’ve heard quite a bit about how folks who stitch full coverage in tent stitch (half cross stitch) have problems with fabric distortion, that’s what got me thinking that the column line issue is probably caused by the same thing.
