Lost his arm in a car accident. The band waited for him to learn foot drumming. Great friends in my book. Cared more for his friend than fame. Try finding that now.
Unfortunately I agree...
Was it true that the drummer wanted to quit or give up the band after he lost his arm and the band didn't give up on him and kept him?
@@the1andonlyknudsen no. Rick didn't want to give up. 3 days after the accident, Phil and Steve (the guitarists) visited him in the hospital, where Rick was upbeat, saying "I'm going to play drums again!".. They initially thought "It's the medication!" A week or so after the accident, he was in the studio helping to put together a drum set to his specifications, to where whatever sounds he would play with his left hand, he would be able to use his feet to produce those sounds. The band was NEVER going to force him out; if he wanted out, it was going to be Rick's decision. Rick never gave up, to the point that they took a break to play the Donnington festival in 1986. Rick didn't miss a beat, in front of 65000 people. Joe Elliott introduced him, and the place went ballistic: straight cheers and applause for a good 5 minutes straight. Rick balled his ass off behind the drumkit, because he knew that it was a big stage in his comeback. He still gets that applause to this day.
Watch their induction speed at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. You'll see what I mean there.
I almost died..i was 16. I ran to my mom
just because some things suck, doesn't mean everything sucks. Friends usually don't suck.
I love when people realize that the drummer has one arm. Puts a totally different respect for Pour Some Sugar on Me since it is so Drum heavy..... Mind Blowing
Yeah
It is an amazing story. They had put out a couple of albums and had a couple of minor hits, but when they put out the "Pyromania" album, they had hit after hit and became huge. Then the drummer looses his arm in a car accident. They had been great friends and worked hard for years together to get where they were, but he has one arm. Most bands(and it would be hard to blame them),would have said" sorry, man but we are finally at the top and we are going to have to go on without you.Who would ever think that he could ever be able to play drums one handed at all,let alone well enough to play in one of the hottest bands at the time. But,he was their friend and they had faith that he could do it.They put their careers on hold(at the worst possible time)and waited for two years for him to recover,a special drum set invented and for him to learn how to play again. The album this came off of was their first record after his 2 year recovery and they started back just where they left off. A major band, putting out hit after hit again. To me,it is one of the greatest stories in music history.I love their music, but I respect everything they did to get to being known as one of the best rock bands ever.
Missing one arm couldn't stop him from playing his drums! he's a Master Drummer!
These boys sure can write a love song, R.I.P Steve Clark
Yes, Rick Allen lost his arm in a car accident. That's what makes listening to them so awesome. Thanks for noticing
thanks for noticing ?
Listening to Def Leppard is awesome because Rick lost his arm? I think you're trying to say Rick is awesome because he recovered and is still able to play?
No,not what makes me listen!! They're just simply f..kn great! Were&always will be!❤
Nobody compares to Def Leppard!!! Just watching the Brotherhood these 5 guys had for one another. When Rick lost his arm in a Car accident New Years Eve 1984. They all stood together and they never thought to replace him. That’s a true Brotherhood.
The brilliant Steve Clark! So missed and loved always.
It's one of the best "driving songs" ever when you're on the highway early in the morning on a summer's day.
Saw them in concert so good. Rick lost his arm in a car wreck and relearned the drums using his foot for his left arm. Legends
Now go back and rewatch the video for "Pour some sugar on me" and just watch the drummer every time he's shown and you will be even more blowncaway by the fact he has only one arm.
Rick Allen lost his arm when he was 21. He had been with Def Leppard since he was 15. They DEFINITELY weren't gonna leave him behind when he lost his limb. They stayed with him and waited for him to heal. It's beautiful.
He still suffers PTSD from the accident to this day, and says drumming is a meditational healing for him.
Def Leppard is the quintessential 80s bands. Their set up had 3 guitar players and all five could sing backup. That makes a band successful. Rick Allen, drummer, car crash was so violent that the seat belt severed his arm at the shoulder. After rehab, the drums were re fitted with extra foot pedals so that he compensated for the lost arm. Also note Steve Clark, classically trained guitarist, died in 1991, from alcohol poisoning. These guys have been through a lot but they are family and they stick together.
If you have a chance, search you tube for their acceptance speech into the R&R Hall of Fame. Joe Elliot give a great speech about their journey.
I second the suggestion for their rock hall induction speech. Absolutely incredible moment!
In the first few albums he still had both his arms. To play with only one arm, is truly amazing 🤩
Rick Allen. Legendary percussionist! I remember when he had this accident. They are a true team. Brothers.
This is honestly my favorite song EVER, regardless of genre.
This song just does it for me.
Most amazing!!!! Cuz when the drummer got in an accident and lost his arm, the band quit touring, until he recovered and learned to play with one arm!!!! Literally stuck together from the time they started at 16.
My fave band since 1984. R.I.P Steve Clark.
he lost it in an accident, I think car accident before the recording of the second album. Instead of replacing him the band took time off to help him rehabilitate and relearn the drums. They even fashioned a special drum kit configuration, customized for him.
His mates are true brothers in that respect.
It happened after Pyromania (3rd album), the one before this album. One of the reasons it took 4 years for this one to come out.
It was before the forth album actually. They had, On through the night, High `n` dry and Pyromania out before the accident.
@@ratowey correct... How did I forget high n dry... Thanks
Actually, "Pyromania" was Def Leppard's 3rd album and Rick Allen's car wreck happened after they'd finished touring in support of the Pyromania album and they were on hiatus before recording the next album
@@seansavage4766 Pyromania is their 3rd album
Their 2nd album was "High'N'Dry"
Armageddon It, Rock of Ages and Photograph are a must.
Foolin
Add “ Love Bites” to the Rabbit 🕳 Hole
two steps behind!
Rocket
He wants to mention that arm I just know it,I had the pleasure of seeing him the first time with both arms, and then unfortunately with one, and they waited on him to heal and the time to get a special drum kit together, how many bands would do that 👍
When Love & Hate Collide is Def Leppard's best power ballad! :-)
I hit that button so fast!! DEF LEPPARD!!!
Yes one handed drummer 🔥 the whole album is 🔥 💎
This album is such an ultimate album great front to back!!
Joe Elliott ‘s voice is so smooth.....Thanks for taking be back 30 years.......Judy D.
Don’t quit now they have so many more hits left for you to discover
They don't call Rick Allen "The Thunder God" for nothing. He lost his arm in a horrible car accident and his band mates let him recover and learn how to play with one arm for about 2 years (I think). He plays everything he played with his left arm with his left foot now. That came in between the albums Pyromania and Hysteria.
He lost it in a car accident. The band kept him and he played the left side of the drums with foot pedals
That moment when you realize the drummer has one arm. Happens to everyone that reacts to Def Leppard
Yes S&M, more Def Leppard. Let's Get Rocked, Two Steps Behind, Miss You In A Heartbeat, Have You Ever Needed Someone So Bad
Slang
Gods Of War
When Love And Hate Collide
New 4 Letter Word
No Matter What (Mott The Hoople cover)
Personal Jesus (Depeche Mode cover)

One of the biggest rabbit holes. Try Love Bites, Bringin' on the Heartbreak, Rock of Ages, Photographs, Rocket, Animal and When Love and Hate Collide. The album Hysteria is a must. It's like a greatest hits. All bangers.
Def Leppard was one of the biggest bands in the 80's. Major props to them for keeping their drummer after he lost his arm in a car accident!
“Animal “ is another great track from this album!
During their peak, Def Leppard experienced not one but two tragedies. First their drummer lost his arm in a car accident and then their founding guitarist Steve Clark succumbed to alcohol.
Def Leopard is one of my favorite bands! Their High and Dry album came out in 1981 and is STILL my favorite album by them, though I LOVE everything they've done! When they made the album High and Dry, they were very young - the drummer was 15, I think, and the others were all 18 and younger. When the drummer lost his arm in an auto accident, the band said they would not go on without him. So he stepped up and became a kick ass one armed drummer, the best!! They put everything into everything they do!
I remember the accident and hoping and praying he wouldn’t lose that arm.
he must not have received enough thoughts and prayers
God's will is very difficult to understand. If he wouldn't have lost the arm, he wouldn't have learned what kind of family Rick had in Def Leppard. Rick was doing drugs really badly and that experience made him a better man. You can pray all you want, but God at the end knows what's best for everyone. God bless
I remember when my older brother got this album on cassette in 1987. This music is made for cruising. We wore this tape out, among others just rolling around town all summer long in his 68 Chevelle.
Bringing On The Heartbreak/ Switch 625. A+
One of England's most underrated rock bands... Def Leppard Rock man... 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
Def Leppard Hysteria was the first rock album, when I hear some of those songs now days, it brings back a lot of good memories.
They had 3 albums prior to Hysteria and the drummer losing his arm between '80 and '83. "On Through the Night", "High and Dry" and my all time favorite "Pyromania"
@@ubcphilco Pyromania!! 😍
Few other good song from Def Leppard ---> Foolin' ... Too late for love ... Photograph ... 😎👍
Little known fact: While MTV started in the US in 1981, MTV Europe didn't start until August 1987. The two testing music videos they used for selling MTV in Europe were: "Money for Nothing", by Dire Straits, and Hysteria, by Def Leppard. Money for Nothing went on to be the first video played on MTV Europe, while Hysteria was the second.
Gods of War off of this album is a fantastic underrated song. You should give it a go...
Rocket, Gods of War, Die Hard the Hunter, Wasted, Hello America, Run Riot.. all great Def Leppard songs
I just popped over to Google something (regarding Def Leppard and the dates certain songs/albums came out), and today I learned one reason why drummer Rick Allen has always kind of had a baby face: he was only 15 when he joined the band as their full-time drummer!
I was a little girl when I saw that he had lost his arm. I was so into them I cried but I am so glad he was able to still play I love this band.❤
I have seen a lot of people react to Def Leppard and you are the first to notice that Rick Allen is drumming with on arm. Yay you! I am loving you for that!
Rock of ages live 1988 in the round by Def Leppard!
Finally a reaction by someone that noticed the biggest surprise of the band!! Nobody else that i have watch react on Def never once say anything about the 1 arm drummer!! He had to add additional feet drum!
I have always LOVED Def Leppard so much!!! 🙌
Hands down, my favorite Def Leppard song.
Def Leppard is my favorite 80s rock band. The album "Hysteria" is, to this day, still among my top 5 all-time favorite albums ever, and the song "Hysteria" is my favorite track. I saw them in '88 on this tour. They called it, "In The Round, In Your Face". The stage was in the middle of the arena. When they did this song, my girlfriend and I spent pretty much the whole song in a kiss, as this was already our song.
I can be have the worst night at work but when this song comes it puts a BIG smile on my face
Love all their songs! Animal is a great one too
I saw them in concert when they opened for Billy Squier and when Billy Squier came on everyone was cheering for Def Leppard. That’s before Rick Allen lost his arm. I saw them again at the first concert after he lost his arm. I am in the Pour Some Sugar on Me video. I love love love this band.
Absolutely love Def Leppard!!! You both rock! 🤘🏻🎸🥁
Def Leppard feels like family. ❤
My dad was a big fan of the 80's music.
Like Def Leppard, Iron Maiden, Van Halen, Judas Priest, The Thompson Twins, Flock of Seagulls, Survivor, Scorpions, Hughes & Thrall.
It was an awesome time playing them records📀 & jamming out as a kid, growing up in the 80's!
God I miss that decade & my childhood! 😢
A band I saw open for Def Leppard twice was TESLA: "Paradise" MTV unplugged version.
MY FAVORITE TWO PEOPLE IN THE WORLD!!! LOVE YOU TWOOOO!
Saw them live in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada around 1987/88... one of the best concerts I've been to.
This was one of my favorite songs but they had tons of hits .. i miss 80s and 90s music. .God bless
LOVE that song!! My favorite Rock Band. Thank you for playing.....
...you noticed our boy is playin' drums with one arm and simply rockin' it hard in spite of reality. this band has earned my respect over the decades for sure.
Watch the movie about Def Leppard. It's good. That drummer was only 15 years old when he started playing for Def Leppard and only 17 or 18 when he lost his arm in a car accident. He taught himself how to play with one arm by changing his drum set up. A very talented drummer. The band waited for him to learn to play with one arm and they enjoyed many years of success. Great story!
Yes, this song takes you away. And yes....one arm, and he kills it.
Rock of ages bringing on the heartbreak and many more
I vote for ( bringing on the heartbreak) thanks for your reactions god bless you. millions of blessings..
Between Rick Allen losing his arm in a car accident, the loss of their guitarist Steve Clark to alcohol poisoning then Joe Elliot caught pneumonia which transitioned into the "100 Day Cough" or Whooping Cough which completely destroyed his vocal chords. His voice was never the same after that but he powered through and sounds good again and still tour as of today.
The band has been through hell and back. Elliot said that Jon Bon Jovi joked that he wouldn't ride in a car with him because they were cursed. After all they have been through its easy to think it may be true.
This song right here is one of my most favs of def leppard
His drum solo when you see them live is awesome I saw them for the 4 time again 3 years ago
LOL. Yes! Another rabbit hole worth diving into. ♥️
With my girl I have 7 boys with nothing works like Def Leppard. Hysteria is MONEY!!!!! Maybe that's why I have 7 boys. New to channel, love new reactions to Def Leppard, mine was at 11 at my friend's house that had older sisters. They're still bringing 100% to fans.
There's loyalty from friends, and love
This is Epic music.Great band.Still love them today
My favorite Def Leppard song. Thank you!
Fantastic band. More to listen to: When Love and Hate Collide, Love Bites, Heaven Is, Two Steps Behind.
Huge def leopard fan! 😍
This is great live (in the round)
Try photograph, mirror mirror & gods of War 👍
Two Steps Behind is a very beautiful & classy acoustic little gem by Def Leppard! :-)
This song resonated it's power in a pool hall I went to with two friends it was an awesome night.
My favorite band of all time! :-)
RIP Steve Clark awesome guitar playing, drummer lost an arm, but they made it together 🎤🥁🎸🎸🎸🤘😎👍
So love watching your videos Great smiles and love you have
Love you two.
rick allen (the drummer- the one on your shirt that has the hat on) has 3 sets of those drums, one set actually stays assembled and a cover just fits over it and is ready for shipping, the other 2 sets have to be assembled though. each set has 4-5 pedals to it.
Love this Band❣‼‼‼‼
Def Lepracy Great Band!
I Love that the band kept him!
To add insult to injury...after Rick Allen lost his arm, surgeons actually re-attached it in hopes that it could be saved. A few days later, though, the doctors sadly had to inform Rick that they were going to have to take it back off. It would be 8 long years before Def Leppard were able to release the mega-hit album, Hysteria. Rick Allen had a custom electric drum kit constructed so he would be able to play his left arm parts using his left foot instead. My hat's off to his bandmates for waiting as long as was necessary for Mr. Allen to get back into playing shape...that's true loyalty, folks 🤘
Love the musical diversity. Thanks for the vid
One of all time favorite bands. Keep going!! You wont regret it.
Got to see them on this tour way back in Jr. High. I used to have a VHS tape that they put out that was a semi documentary and video compilation. After the accident the drummer started to figure out how to play with his feet while in the hospital. The rest of the band got really excited and they put together the set for him. I am still just amazed by it.
Too late for love is one of my favorites of theirs. I look forward to your reactions, love what your doing.
Makes me smile
Love the shirt !!!! Shawn yall are awesome!!!
The best drummer in the business in my opinion
Its true. Rick Allen is his name, and yes he only has one arm. He was in a tragic car crash in 1984, where he lost his arm in a rollover accident. The band didn't know if they would ever play again. Against ALL ODDS, Rick Allen reinvented himself and taught himself how to play mostly with his feet. This album is a testament to his dedication and hard work to retrain your brain. Great album, (the actual show was even better), great band.
You guys should check out some of their earlier stuff like Let Him Go, Hit and Run, or Bringing on the Heartache
Out of all Def’s work....this is The Best of all...in my opinion. The melody and the guitar “weeping” is just, goodness.
Animal is a kickass rocker by Def Leppard with an absolutely brilliant guitar solo! :-)
Love you guys!
Humble people. Be like them.
