In regards to the ocarina in question being tuned to A442... A lot of “soloist” melody instruments are actually tuned a few cents sharp to stick out from the rest of the instruments in the mix - it makes a solo more *bright* without being so sharp that it sounds out of tune to the average listener’s ear. A lot of accordions, for instance, are tuned to A443. Ocarinas aren’t typically used as background accompaniment in arrangements, so it makes sense that they’d be manufactured to prioritize their use for solo melodies.
Thank you! Thanks to you I bought the Night by Noble Ocarina as my first ever Ocarina (unfortunately not with your affiliated link since I live on a different part of the world) and Mr mute. I have wanted to learn to play an instrument, especially a flute for over a decade (I got a Dizi some years ago but it's too loud to learn). Now it's finally going to be possible to learn an instrument and I'm very excited for it! Thank you! I can't wait to sit at a park and just play what comes to mind. I want to play for my future children and for my wife. I love music and being someone who has never been able to create anything in my entire life despite the infinite number of awesome things I want to bring to reality, I lack talent, money and the ability to do it. At least with this Ocarina and Mr mute, I can finally create some parts of what I've been craving to bring forth for my entire life. Once again, thank you. I foresee a shitload of practice this week.

The overwhelming majority of woodwinds are designed to tune A=442 at 20C. This is because symphony orchestras like to hype their tuning ever so slightly in order to compensate for the deadening effect of performing in a gigantic concert hall. Hey andy! My ocarina journey has been a bit so far, first i wanted to get the stl oot 12 hole off of amazon, it came eventually after like 17 days or so and i got one pf those ones just like the cheap amazon ocarinas in the 15 to $25 price range (i wont get in to depth with that) then eventually after a little i decided i dont need a oot design and ordered a night by noble. in a coupl o days (delivered on my birthday in not long 😅) itll be here. However, i got one that was red and not a rubber finish (it was one of the options i could get and i know that its actually the night company) do you know if it will it still be okay and sound good?
I learned to play on a night by Noble and loved it. I dropped it and it landed on the seam and split open (VIRTUALLY indestructible). I ordered a new one and received it a few days later. Again, very pleased with my purchase. Then, I wanted to have a second one, in case I broke one, and I also wanted to keep one in my car and one at home. Ordered my third Night. I was surprised to discover that this one is much more airy than the others. So much so that I really don't play it much. My question is, is there something I can do to modify it to eliminate the airyness, or just suck it up and buy a new one? (I am considering the Focalink Bravura.) BTW Thanks for all of your great videos!
If it's not too late, I'm sure you can return the airy one or contact Night and see if a replacement is possible! Night by Nobles are generally very consistent and have high quality control, but anything plastic and mass produced can have manufacturing flaws
@@AndyCormierYT thanks for replying to my comment though when i try to play the ‘song of storms’ on the NBN the part where it requires u to play high E and high F it sounds really airy which sound terrible. To the point where i think its really a big problem rather then a not so big of a problem. I have tried using your suggested comment by using less air but it made it sound more airy how do i fix this problem? I have been struggling with that problem since i started learning the ocarina. Its a really annoying issue idk if thats how plastic ocarinas are supposed to sound like since the NBN is my first ocarina.
@@Follyful sorry about the late comment, I just commented as well not too long ago. Honestly it could of been a bad copy? Because I can play the lower notes just fine, it's when I get to the highest ones it's very airy with low or high. Usually if it's the airy notes id modify it to a lesser pitch. I'm still learning myself however will invest in a higher quality one in the near future. It's just best to use it as a learning tool, that way when you do get a better quality one you'll know how to play your favorite songs from the jump.
@@pandaaddict2756I actually found out the reason why its because of the technique i used to blow in the ocarina was wrong, normally u would think to just exhale into the ocarina but thats for some songs, songs like lost woods require u to blow into the ocarina with a tu tu tu with your mouth idk how to say it i kinda quit if im being honest
@@Follyful yeah I tried it at first with just blowing, then did it with a hard too, came out sharp not airy but screechy, if you do a low too it comes out perfect so it does require consistency. And here's the thing you always have your ocarina so whenever you want to you could always go back to it 😊
Hey bud, great review! You convinced me to get one :) I've been looking at the Coda EDC and was wondering if you have any experience in it and if you thought it was worth the price (it's expensive to get it shipped to the UK!). Thanks man, keep up the good work!
Hi, I am new to ocarina and I got the plastic Night by Noble ivory AC ocarina two years ago and I seldom play with it. I got it out today and it feels a bit sticky. It looks like the matte plastic is melting. What should I do? Please advise. Thanks!
You might be overblowing on those notes - try using gentler air pressure. With my NBN, if I overblow, the E and F don't make any sound, so lighter breath pressure on this ocarina all around can help!
I got a Songbird Ocarina and it came with scratches, contacted them and they told me its normal, sent it back and will stay away from them. Thanks for the video
Sorry for a reply 10 months after your comment, I just stumbled onto this video. Random scratches wouldn't be normal, but I have noticed on many of my ocarinas that there is a small scratch by every finger hole. I suspect that as part of the tuning and quality control process, the maker marks each hole after testing to make sure it's in tune.
Hi! I've just bought this ocarina to start playing and I was wondering what would be the best site to find music sheets. I only seem to find ocarina tabs everywhere. Thanks for the ocarina recomendation!
I’ve gotten the night by noble ocarina a few weeks ago and it’s easy to learn! But mine sounds more like a whistle than your average ocarina. I’m not sure if it’s a me problem or the actual instrument.
I know Transverse seems to be the most popular option but what about good pendant style ocarinas? I personally enjoy my Songbird 7 hole OoT but I would like to see your recommendation.
Do you know anything about the STL ranger? The reason im intersted in this one is because its tuned to B and thats what my guitar is tuned to as well. Appreciate any response!
The Night by Noble is the one I have. It has lasted well, is fun to play and it's sturdy. I'm not very proficient, I just have fun. I have the flat black version, I find that finish lasts longer.
For the squeek at high pressure is a matter of breath control. Personally I find that night is more stable with high pressure compared with other orcarinas, even STLs.
I got my night by noble, it's pretty good on the low notes but whenever I get to the higher ones to the highest it's very airy and doesn't sound good. Now I've tried to put a bit more air whenever saying 'too' and unfortunately it does not help it gets too screachy. So sometimes I would have to modify musical notes to lower pitches whenever I'm playing a song. With that being said I've combed through several written reviews, and video reviews. Most people do like it, and a handful sound like mine or have the same complaint with high notes being airy. So it could of just been a bad copy of the night by noble, who knows. I'll be getting a non plastic one in the near future as it's pretty easy to learn the notes. Just wished it sounded better on the high pitches. And yes cleaning is always taken care of on my end. I don't let condensation build up.
@@AndyCormierYT absolutely correct on that, yeah I tried blowing first, then doing the hard too, got discouraged then tried what you said and it worked, just takes getting used to haha thank you! 😄
I have an ocarina by noble, the price and looks are the same but mine doesn’t say night and have the little holes both on the right hand side is it a different model? It didn’t come with a case and the guy at the guitar shop in my area is an ass.
Dude can you help me to buy it? I was considering buying it already cause of you've already said it's the best plastic one we could get from the past videos, but the problem is: I'm from Brazil, and the shipping cost is near the $70, adding it to the Ocarina price it becomes over $100, there's no way to this be somehow payable to me, isn't there other way to buy it but with lower shipping price?
I'm not sure how to help with that sadly, but consider looking into Latin American ocarina makers! There's some in at least Central America off the top of my head (I don't remember the names), and they may have lower shipping fees than Night
I had a ceramic Zelda ocarina for the longest time. But a lot of the notes sounded airy and it obviously wasn't really meant to be played. So finally I decided to get a better one. I chose Night by Noble AC and... Wow.. just wow... I like the plastic so much more than the ceramic. Not only is it WAY more durable, but the notes are so clear, and I can achieve much higher volumes than with my ceramic one. The louder I played on my ceramic, the less clear and muddy the notes sounded. On the Night Ocarina, the louder I play the clearer the notes sound. I highly recommend this Ocarina, especially for beginners like me. It's inexpensive, durable (unlike the fragile ceramic types), and it sounds amazing. I haven't watched this video yet. I wanted to write my thoughts before I have subconscious ones planted in my brain from watching the video. That isn't a bad thing at all, but I wanted to write MY unaltered opinion before it gets altered 😋
im worried about the 442 hz, was that a problem for you? i have someone travelling to the states and i only have one shot in getting it right lol with the low preassure can I play with my traditional instruments?
This isn't my first Ocarina but I am about to go on deployment and didn't want to have my ceramic ones crushed in my seabag or something so I bought this one earlier this year.
That high "C" is actually a C sharp if my ear is don't playing tricks on me (in fact, the whole scale is almost a semitone above of the key of C). I have this same issue with mine. I have to blow ridiculously low to actually play the correct notes of the key of C. This ocarina is useless for playing along with louder instruments. However, it has a very bright tone and is really really hard to break (unlike ceramic ones) is an enjoyable ocarina to practice at home
im worried about the 442 hz, could this be a problem? i have someone travelling to the states and i only have one shot in getting it right because they dont sell it in my country lol with the low preassure can I play with my traditional instruments in 440? like recording stuff with a piano thats in traditional tuning?
You can reduce breath pressure to play w/ A=440 instruments, yeah. However, if you'd rather have an equally good plastic AC, the Focalink Bravura AC sold either via Songbird, Stein, or directly from Focalink is just as good quality-wise as the Night by Noble but is tuned to A=440
Being 2 cents off from standard tuning is by and large going to be imperceptible to everyone. It’s probably tuned to A442 specifically to make it subconsciously seem a little brighter in relation to A440 instruments. Also chances are that basically every instrument you play with (other than like, a glockenspiel or something) is going to be out of tune by a couple cents in one direction or another (especially a piano that might go years between tunings), so it won’t be anything that your ear isn’t already used to hearing. Long story short: buy it! It’ll be fine. :)
Hi Andy! I have always been interested in playing Ocarinas. But only recently that I feel like I wanna really try playing this. In Malaysia, there are no good quality Ocarinas but Ive found Night by Noble and costs around RM140 here. Do you think that I should go ahead and buy it and git gud?
I lost my more garbage $18 Ocarina, and then bought a Night by Noble on Amazon just a couple of days ago. It only cost me $33. So if anybody's thinking about picking up the instrument, the Night by Noble is almost $10 cheaper than when this video was made. Go for it. It sounds good.
Amazon! And if it's not available in your country, there are probably other vendors (Stein/Focalink, etc) that may have great plastics with lower shipping costs
Yikes! I'm having a terrible time with the one I just got... I recently started playing an Alto Recorder, and other than struggling to reach with my pinky fingers, I'm doing well and making pleasant sounds. BUT my new Night by Noble is awful! I can barely get a good sound on it, and I'm wondering if I should send it back... Thoughts?
Don't give up yet - make sure you're fully covering the holes, see if using less breath pressure helps, and I'd recommend watching some videos about learning the ocarina by David Erick Ramos
I am interested in picking up an Ocarina but the Night By Noble is about $75 Canadian which is a bit much for someone who isn't sure if they're serious about learning the instrument yet. If you were to buy an Ocarina off Amazon that isn't an OoT replica which brand would you suggest? I've heard OcarinaWind makes some ok ocarinas, as well as Techson.
That’s unfortunate because that’s exactly what I was hoping to use one for - a backing melody for my acoustic 😬

Is the focalink/stein bravura fine too?
I was excited to get the NBN but after playing it the notes like high e and f sound terrible ive read the comments and tbh i think its a me problem
With the high notes on the NBN, use less air than you think you need. That typically helps!
And here's the thing you always have your ocarina so whenever you want to you could always go back to it 😊
Have u seen the solid steel version of same one u showed and got
ワオ!これは日本人の私でもとても理解がしやすく楽しめる動画です。
Hey bud, great review! You convinced me to get one :) I've been looking at the Coda EDC and was wondering if you have any experience in it and if you thought it was worth the price (it's expensive to get it shipped to the UK!). Thanks man, keep up the good work!
I bought this same one but a different color but it was cheaper. Idk if i should be worried🥲
That should be fine! It's the same ocarina, just a different color
@@AndyCormierYT ok thanks thats a relief😅
Hi, I am new to ocarina and I got the plastic Night by Noble ivory AC ocarina two years ago and I seldom play with it. I got it out today and it feels a bit sticky. It looks like the matte plastic is melting. What should I do? Please advise. Thanks!
I just got this ocarina. I can't get my high E or high f to work at all. I don't know why. Plz help lol
You might be overblowing on those notes - try using gentler air pressure. With my NBN, if I overblow, the E and F don't make any sound, so lighter breath pressure on this ocarina all around can help!
saw this video after watching the night by noble because of the tier list video, sweet.
Not sure if you'll see this, but where can you find Legend of Zelda music charts for this? Thank you (and to anyone else that can help)!
do you recommend a wood ocarina?
@@CuteSeamus moisture build up can be an issue. As will playing in real hot or real cold temps.
I'm looking to learn this to play while hiking or at camp 😅
Anyone else finding it really hard to hit high notes on this? I just got the night by noble. Is this just a begginer ocarina problem?
W/ the night by noble, my only issue is that you need to underblow on high notes.
Try using less air, and it should come clearer!
@@AndyCormierYT thanks I just saw that in your video. I think I just have to learn how to breath properly 😅
Weirdly, I find that the Night by Noble needs *less* air on high notes than you’d think. I’d experiment with that as well!
I've got a night by noble and it's great. I started with STL, but night is better.
A Night by Noble plastic Ocarina is a very fine Instrument!
Take time & learn how to play it.
Life is happier with Music!
Great instrument my wife played it almost immediantly she plays by ear so she has advantage.
Thanks so much I got the night by noble ocarina and it’s perfaect
im worried about the 442 hz, was that a problem for you? i have someone travelling to the states and i only have one shot in getting it right lol with the low preassure can I play with my traditional instruments?
This isn't my first Ocarina but I am about to go on deployment and didn't want to have my ceramic ones crushed in my seabag or something so I bought this one earlier this year.
If I'm currently in South korea can I get one, that would be great
Great vid! Thanks. Subscribed.
"oh wow that's a cool instrument, *instantly gets 7years older"
@@Senneih_cram the ocarina doesn't progress time, drawing the Master Sword from the pedestal does.

I personally enjoy my inline Mountain Ocarina. To me, the inline design is much easier to play
im worried about the 442 hz, could this be a problem? i have someone travelling to the states and i only have one shot in getting it right because they dont sell it in my country lol with the low preassure can I play with my traditional instruments in 440? like recording stuff with a piano thats in traditional tuning?
Ocarina @ 4:15 "I lean away from the mic to breathe in"
Please have a review on odami plastic ocarina also...
I've recently curious about getting an ocarina for a while, I might buy this one, I can't be trusted with Ceramic Ocarinas.
where do i buy that ocarina
Amazon! And if it's not available in your country, there are probably other vendors (Stein/Focalink, etc) that may have great plastics with lower shipping costs
The video starts around 2:19 thank me later.
I've said this before, but get the plastic 12 hole OOT replica from STL. Very good pick for a cheap price (if you want an OOT replica)
I got this ocarina about five minutes ago in ivory
Thank you.
If this is a starter one ... what do experienced players use?
The night by noble you have sounds way more airy than my night by noble
The video I just need was uploaded a week ago. How lucky can I be? Lol
It's 35 right now on Amazon
What would you recommend for a great ceramic Ocarina???
I just bought 3 for xmas presents
The one I got sound a good bit off and I’m kinda dissapointed
@@AndyCormierYT thanks fo the advice 🙏
Why do my high notes sound like a airy whistle
4:12 if you want to hear its sound
I am interested in picking up an Ocarina but the Night By Noble is about $75 Canadian which is a bit much for someone who isn't sure if they're serious about learning the instrument yet.
If you were to buy an Ocarina off Amazon that isn't an OoT replica which brand would you suggest? I've heard OcarinaWind makes some ok ocarinas, as well as Techson.
