Imagine seeing someone in a presentation or a concert bending down because every single high note. Dude that would be the nearest to look like a rockstar shaking it's hair. But... with an ocarina.
It works because the "sound exit hole" or whatever it's called is closer to your chest, which acts like an "air wall\dam thingy" and slightly increases the air pressure inside the ocarina which makes the note clearer. Trust me ... I'm an engineer. 😄
I just ordered a 12 hole ocarina last week..still waiting for it to get here. I have three others, two smaller ones with four holes and a medium one with six. Since I played the clarinet, I figure the 12 hole should be pretty easy for me to learn. I'll definitely check out your book! So happy I found your channel! Thank you David!
Just what I needed! I have lost a bit of breath pressure since a surgery last month (part of it included a cut in my neck), and I have struggled to get the high notes. If you do have any good tips for breath pressure improvement, they would be appreciated.
you probably dont care but does someone know a way to log back into an instagram account..? I was stupid forgot the password. I would love any help you can offer me!
@Jax Moses thanks for your reply. I found the site through google and I'm trying it out atm. Seems to take a while so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
I remember you mentioned this in a video like 5 months ago when someone sent you a video of them.payimg and they used it. I've been waiting for this, thank you so much david!
Please please please finish your How to Play Ocarina series..... I would love to add Low B and Low A to my abilities but the last video you made on that was the high notes. You are the reason I bought a 12 hole in the first place! Please continue teaching me (and all the others I noticed who posted "where's the next video?")
I had a dream I made one of these instruments, and didn't even know what it was called at the time. Since then I have printed 6 or seven different ocarina's on my 3d printer. most of them struggle with high notes, and the alto one I printed makes too much noise at just the slightest breath in it. I love the sound of the tenor ocarinas, and just need to decide which one to buy! :-) Thanks for the great content!
This was so helpful! Thank you. I just started my adventure into playing the ocarina 3 days ago and I have been struggling to play these notes. Hopefully this will improve my sound. ❤️
It works due to resonance off your chest and also that bending over makes it harder to exhale at the same rate while still making it *feel* like you are doing as much work (if not more) than if you were upright. You aren't increasing the distance by any appreciable amount. While the trachea is a bit elastic, not going to grow by a few inches when bending your neck. You can test the decreased airflow by simply inhaling and breathing out as quick as possible, then doing an acute bend and doing the same. It should take about 1.5-2x as long, even though you'll be straining to exhale.
here before 100 views :) I love your videos btw! I got my ocarina in November 2018 so I'm about 6 months of playing the ocarina :) keep up the great work
Very nice advice! I wonder about the shape and edge of the sound-hole ... I'm going to 3d-print one (or few) on a resin 3d printer and I'd like to find a good 3d model first. I'm currently looking at a 2chamberOcarina (on printables by Bathompson) and it has two sound-holes of course (being 2-chambers one), and I found that the heart-shape should help produce sound in a wider range, but I also noticed on the 3d model that the edge isn't very sharp ... actually the narrowest of it is ~0.5mm, and also the angle towards the thicker wall of the body has these channels, which seems to be an artifact of the 3d software used to models it ... I guess So especially given the trick just shown (that other object close to the sound-holes can affect the sound) I wonder about these artifacts, and about optimal sound-hole specs like size, shape, sharpness of the edge, smoothness and angle ... Any info will be greatly appreciated! :) P.S. that made me wonder isn't it possible to make the sound-holes modular - like having the edge itself be a part of a small module that has a common socket and can be switched with different shape of sound-hole?
Hi David, Thanks for all of the tips you offer in your videos. They’ve helped me get more comfortable with my Ocarina playing. I was wondering, what is the brand of/where did you purchase the red Ocarina? Do you attribute not having to use the acute bend technique to that make/model, or is it kind of hit or miss even with brands/makers when it comes to finding an Ocarina where you don’t have to use the acute bend technique?
Glad the videos have been helpful! The red ocarina is a special edition Zfan model by OcarinaMusic, available from Thomann.de. The acute bend technique generally depends on the maker/brand. Pretty much anything from OcarinaMusic and Focalink will not need the acute bend. From Songbird and STL, it really depends on the model/shape of the ocarina. If there’s a particular one you have a question about, shoot me a DM on IG, and I may be able to help.
Thanks for making this; I’ve used the acute bend technique before, but I never really knew how it worked until now. Could you do a video on how to play high notes above f? I eventually figured out how to do a high G by watching Milt, but I couldn’t find any tutorials anywhere and I’d love to learn how to do it properly
Yep, it's a very difficult technique, but I can try to cover it in a future video. I actually made a quick tutorial about it on my Patreon already: www.patreon.com/posts/tutorial-tuesday-7543050
@@DavidErickRamos Can you recommend a good quality ocarina to buy..and what if im.blowing harder on the high note and it still doesn't aound as good or as loud and resonant even on the low notes..i have a white Woodnote brand..not sure what it's made of...Hope you can respond..thanks very much..
Hi David - Have you tried the new EDC Flute form Mountain Ocarinas? How does one sign up for the newsletter? I'd love to have a physical copy of the book! What were the ocarinas used in you demonstrations? Thanks.
THANKS a lot David! I'm a totally new beginner and I didn't know if it was me or the ocarina that did sound weird , playing notes on the left hand. Well even with this technique, it doesn't sound very well... :( My ocarina is from a good company btw, but yeah.. I guess I would have to try another one.
HI DAVID! I ordered the dolce double AC and he Osawa soprano c in red from songbird ocarina. I have one question. With the subhole for the f# (I think) on the 2nd chamber do you have to cover this hole at all times to play the f? Or just when you need to play the f# (or whatever that note is). Thanks! P.S. if anyone else has an answer feel free to comment (david is probably busy making great videos for us!)
What brand of ocarina do you suggest? I currently use STL brand, but I'm finding that more often than not I'm having to use the acute bend technique to get a clearer high note and would like to avoid that if possible.
Hi I have a c3 ocarina 10 holes very old. I don’t manage to play high F (all holes opened). I tried this technic but I had very poor results. Which Italian brand can be played easily? Is Clacol c3 12 holes easy to play high F without specific technique?
Anyone else have an Awef ocarina? It's my first one, so I can't tell if it's the design or my breath control leaving my notes so airy. I'm a flautist so I'm pretty used to having to balance how much air to produce a high note.
I'm having a huge issue with my ocarina where despite all the advice you gave, I'm unable to play high notes. I can only elicit 3 or 4 notes, the rest is just air. Why does this keep happening?
Hello! This was very helpful! But I have a question: I used the acute bend technique, and my ocarina still sounded airy. I did it right and my ocarina is not cheap(it’s actually high quality) I also washed it carefully and dried it and it still sounded airy. How could I fix this?
Hello David, in the last video you made, you used a really nice looking ocarina and I think its the same one you used in the dire dire docks video, can you please tell me the name of that ocarina and where I can get one?

The problem for me is that sometimes I have to blow the high notes and really hit that note, because it was all whispery, and after doing thst I can play the high notes easily for a couple of minutes

Yes, you have to cover both of those holes for 'F'. It's what's known as a "split hole".
Ok thanks!
Thank you!! 😄

Stein
Does the stl ocarina of time replica haves this kind of "problem" or it can reach the High notes without this tecnique?

Hello David, in the last video you made, you used a really nice looking ocarina and I think its the same one you used in the dire dire docks video, can you please tell me the name of that ocarina and where I can get one?
In my recent collab? That was an Alto G from Noble Ocarina. In the Dire Dire docks video is my Maparam Alto C.
@@DavidErickRamos Thank you so much. 👍
Cool video 😁
So that’s why you keep bending down when you play high notes!
Plays D sound: is perfect clear very nice
Plays f sound:FFFFFFfffffff f f ff f💨

0:12, why do you have so many? Do different ocarina sound better for specific music pieces
Very good question. Yes, each ocarina I own has a unique timbre and dynamic qualities. So I pick the ocarina I’m going to play based on the situation
