    Picked up a Night by Noble after watching your videos about six months ago. Joined a Ukrainian folk music band and played at the EU committee in Thailand two months ago. Made a video recording of the whole show too and ate some of the most amazing hors d’œuvres I’ve ever tried. Never imagined my first show on the ocarina would be in front of hundreds of politicians and influencers. Now I’m waiting for a Night by Noble soprano C.

      Thank you for sharing this! Not only is this amazing but it's so encouraging to see someone go "Yeah so I got an Ocarina, learned it and did all these amazing things in just 6 months". It's nice to see someone who actually went from 0 to advanced.
      All I wanted for a while now is to see a comment like this. Hearing professionals talk about getting good at an instrument is not as impactful as reading or hearing about someone who had started from the bottom and got the results.
      Now I have it confirmed. I can learn this instrument and get good at it. Practice every day!

    I've owned an ocarina for many years now, but I'm only just now buckling down again and truly learning it. I'm relearning how to read sheet music (I learned in elementary school playing clarinet, and again in junior high in a music exploration class, but forgot it both times) and I'm practicing daily. I think my biggest goal is to be able to sight read music, and be able to play songs by ear. Thank you for your videos! I love watching them!

    I just got my first ocarina two weeks ago. A nice ceramic one from STl. End of last week, found out about plastic ocarinas and ended up ordering 3 plastic ones. 2 tenor 1 soprano. My daughter heard me practicing the other day and wanted to learn too. (she is 8). So now we will be practicing together and enjoying our musical journey together!
    Night by noble soprano and 2 C tenor from STL. I always loved wind instruments (played flute, trombone and oboe in band in school) but always wanted to learn ocarina. not having funding or time while younger, i am now embarking on this journey, in part, thanks to your video that popped up two months ago! So, thanks for the push, input and advice through your videos.
    I hope to ensemble with you some day, maybe even with my daughter beside.

    I finally started playing the ocarina back in August. I never got the chance to really play a whole lot at one time but right now, I'd say I'm between a level 1 and level 2 but closer to a level 2. I essentially had no musical background whatsoever, so I taught myself everything I know so far. But I did things a bit backwards because I was so excited to start playing that I just found some tabs and started playing some Zelda songs using the tabs since I knew what they sounded like. But then I decided to learn the scale since I had no idea what notes I was even playing and now I can play the scale and even some songs just by the letter of the note I need to play. So, I'm not up to sheet music level yet but I can play some songs from memory and generally speaking, as long as I've heard the song before and I know what note I need to play, I can play it that way without the actual tabs. Oh, and I'm playing on a pendant as well! The Kokiri Edition to be exact. :)

      @@AndyCormierYT agreed! I do practice everyday, and I teach some people on the side. I wouldn’t call myself a professional. I remember taking saxophone lessons and having to practice everyday because my mom said so. I had to practice so much stuff I didn’t actually like that I was so fed up at a point that I didn’t play any music for 3-4 years. That’s why I stick to things I like. Some stuff is difficult, some stuff is easy. :)

    Spending like idk an hour or 2 a day for a week i managed to be fairly proficient playing Lullaby of Woe from the Witcher 3, Toss a Coin to your Witcher, Ballad of the Windfish from Link's Awakening, just from the ocarina tab website you linked simply because i was bored of playing happy birthday or other basic starting songs.
    Aside from that, I managed to figure out by ear most of Halsey's Gasoline and the final fantasy main theme because i knew how to basically do it on an acoustic guitar already.

    Thanks, I have been thinking about buying a method book and this video has convinced me now to get one. I got my ocarina a week before xmas (5 weeks ago) and with it I've had 80hrs practice, its one of those cheap do not buy ocarinas (it's actually fairly good, I can play almost 50 songs well now using sheet music but are also learning to play by ear) and have a professional ocarina from songbird on its way to me. I'm wanting to some time put my piano playing together with some ocarina playing and make some youtube music videos.

    For multichamber ocarina I studied with The Art of Ocarina, volumen two, from STL. A very good method, with a CD to hear the lessons. The difficulty of the lessons increase in a progressive way. It’s a good option to practice double ocarina. Of course it’s important to begin with a 12 hole ocarina and then continue with a double one.

    I keep on rewatching this video to see where I am, and I feel like it's been half a year and I'm still at level 3, just interpreting it differently every time 😂. I've been practicing every day 30 minutes each. Hope i can get better at my ico double ac fast soon. It took a lot of time for me to get used to the new extremely-breath-sensitive. It's a little harder for me on many common ocarinas because ocarinas are mostly tuned to 20 degrees by default but my country's average temperature is around 27 degrees. So many techniques have to be slightly tweaked as the overall breath pressure required is very low.

    Weird, by this scale I guess I'd be level 4, but I don't know if that's how I would have classified myself. I had a cheat code, I play saxophone, not just used to but still currently do. I waffle between which one I'd consider my main, right now I think it's sax because I recently picked up a baritone and I'm having a blast exploring the low range. Then again I do wander cons with my ocarina and play for people and even garner some small applause sometimes so maybe that's accurate. Hard to wander around a convention floor with even a soprano saxophone so I've never tried that lol. *edit* Just wanted to add I've been playing ocarina for about 3 years now, starting with one I 3d printed for myself at the start of the pandemic, so even with the "cheat code" I had, it wasn't instant.

    • @AndyCormierYT
      @AndyCormierYT  Рік тому +1

      having a musical background is the best cheat code for getting good at the ocarina quickly!
      since the instrument is comparably easy to get proficient with, the thing most new players struggle with when improving is the musicianship and music theory side. if you have that taken care of and practice consistently, you only really need to work on furthering the specific instrument skill rather than total musical proficiency. I’d definitely believe you’re level 4!

    Thank you for this breakdown! I'd say I'm a mid 3 (there's still a few things in level 3 that need work, but I'm pretty confident). I'd like to get to level 4 eventually and that'll be good enough for me.

    Id say I was almost at level 3 when i played Ocarina regularly, but I lost it so i havent played in a while. I was upper level 2 with aspects of level 3. I have about a decade on trumpet from middle school to college Marching band so I think that helped a lot. I want to buy a new one to pick it back up and take it more seriously this time, but I kinda wanna buy something to challenge myself. So i was thinking of getting the songbird triple harmony if/when it comes back in stock.

    I think I'm somewhere between a 2 and a 3. I have a musical instrument background so it was easy for me to pick up learning the ocarina. Been looking into getting one but money is currently a little tight.

    I also chose the worst time to pick one up, as I bought my Noble at 7 months pregnant, and am currently due tomorrow... So my breath control is very bad right now with a baby on my lungs lol.

I still struggle with higher notes (probably too worried about my neighbors to fully blow into the Ocarina) and I'm absolutely hopeless with the 12-hole Ocarina system, but I can play reasonably well on the English-style Pendants. I would disagree with the ocarina being easier than the recorder but that may just be because I started with a tin whistle before I got an ocarina. And I know, the tin whistle and recorder are different but I could play the recorder perfectly fine after learning the tin whistle. In my mind though, the recorder style instrument is easier than the ocarina.

    • @AndyCormierYT
      @AndyCormierYT  8 місяців тому +1

      I’d argue that because a recorder can do octave jumps on the same fingering, it’s harder for beginners without precise enough breath control to stay in the proper octave. ocarinas, on the other hand, will generally only get a bit sharp or flat if you have improper airflow on a given fingering
      that said, I have nearly 13 years of ocarina experience and only played recorder in elementary school, so like you said, it may be a question of what type of instrument you’re more comfortable with

    • @amckay003
      @amckay003 8 місяців тому

      @@AndyCormierYT That is a good point about breath support. So little air is needed for the tin whistle or recorder and when I got an ocarina it sounded flat at first because I was so used to a tin whistle.
