- Episode #292 : Season 9 : The South Pacific
Hello friends,
On this episode I depart Makagai Island and make way for the Yasawa Group, also known as the Western Group. Leaving at midday for the 96NM passage so we are sure to reach the dangerous coral pass near Yasawa Island in the daylight.
Once we make landfall I head into shore to explore the legendary Yasawa limestone caves!

The expression on James face when he saw the inside of the cave was worth its weight in gold. Thanks for allowing your audience to participate in your journey.
That was a real moment, in fact I felt almost the same without being there. I'm telling ya, James has a superb way to bring emotion onto a screen!! Yeah really quite superb!! 😊👍
@@neilrush659 you are totally right.
Just bought me a 1969 Islander 37 leaving the pacific north west july 2024 ,im gonna follow most of your path. Cant wait to go. You helped inspire me
Can I come? Lol
Awesome!! I wanna do this. I so bad wanna do it i think i will
One of the most genuine and authentic sailing channels there is! Bravo James! Bravo 👏👏👏
I enjoyed the Captain Bligh passages 🤗 Have you heard this poem from Ella Wheeler Wilcox? Thought you may enjoy it.
"One ship sails East,
And another West,
By the self-same winds that blow,
'Tis the set of the sails
And not the gales,
That tells the way we go.
Like the winds of the sea,
Are the waves of time,
As we journey along through life,
'Tis the set of the soul,
That determines the goal,
And not the calm or the strife."
Incredible Chanel
James, I can’t wait for your adventures in the Caribbean!
James, you bring a degree of cinematic quality to your travel films that literally does not exist elsewhere here. The music and the long scenes and the general respect for both the locales and viewers is remarkable. Much respect and may you sail long and free.
James you found a way to explore the world. Having it mostly to yourself. And not relying on the commercialized way of doing it. Well done. I’m truly inspired…thank you sir!
Hi James. I enjoyed this film very much, and I look forward to future videos. As it happens, I'm a descendant of John Fryer, Sailing Master of the Bounty. When the famous mutiny occurred, on April 28th 1789, Fryer was one of the eighteen loyal crew set adrift with Captain William Bligh in a 23-foot open boat. Their 3,600 mile voyage to Timor is one of the most incredible stories of the sea. Bligh was (unfortunately) a very tactless man, which caused a host of problems; nevertheless, both Bligh and Fryer were excellent navigators, and without their skill and endurance, none would have survived. The grave of John Fryer can still be seen at Wells-next-the-Sea in Norfolk.
That is amazing! I looked up John Fryer's court testimony in the mutiny trial. I find this historical information so interesting. I sailed with my father for many years. Thank you.
Thanks for the reading from Capt. Bligh! Liked also how you notice the wind shifts. You paying attention to same "small" things I do. Yeah, it's survival.
James, I share in your wonderment at the exploits of the great seafarers such as Cook and Bligh and your even greater delight in following in their footsteps!
Unbelievable beauty. Here in North Missouri I’ve just finished mowing my yard and tilling my garden. I came into my garage to check the radar because it was supposed to rain. It broke up before it got this far. Watching your footage I’m just in awe and jealous like you wouldn’t believe. You are living my dream. Thanks again for sharing your adventures with us. DC
This time I do a garden Im going w/ No Till, is sposed to give you much bigger growth.
You were the textbook definition of wide eyed wonderment when you descended into the cave pools. Amazing. Thanks for sharing your continued adventure James!
Thank you so much for sharing this !!!.
😮😮😮😮wow James fecking wow and your filming bro spot on boooooom wonderful 👏 🙌 👌 I can only imagine what it like to have the place to yourself 👉💚👈
Another beautiful film. Much love
I lived in Fiji for 12 years and never got to that location. Our family friends Matagali is the owner of the island. When we get back with our boat, we will visit for sure.. Thank you for sharing.
Another wonderful film James, those caves were simply sublime man. You make my Monday evenings and every film brings me to that place. You have the knack for film making that's for sure and your choice of music is so superb and really lifts the atmosphere of your footage, incredible actually! Anyhow wishing you well, and safe travels.
I totally agree, the filming and pacing are excellent, likewise the music which is always well chosen and appropriate. It does feel like we're sharing this incredible experience. Many congratulations to James!
@@chrisgamble4939 Hey Chris, man I look forward to James's films every week. I've been following him from the very start of his journey way before he set sail. This is my favourite channel on YT!!
@@neilrush659 Hi Neil, I'm going to catch up with all of James's videos, hopefully in the right order! I don't know if you saw my post about my ancestor John Fryer, Sailing Master of the Bounty (posted 11 days ago). All the best, C
Take an small ear cleaner stick thingy and put some alcohol on it and use that to clean the inside of the charging port.
Hi James , as usual beautiful movie, with historical explanation ! Thk’s a lot, ………sometimes I show yours movies to my french children and they said: « Wao ! This guy is lucky ».’and i answer : « No chance , he search and share his destiny with us ». Thk’ see you next trip and enjoy it.
Whoa. That cave was incredible! The formation almost castle like. Then the loop around..the rocks along the edges..wow. I have never seen something quite like that so I appreciate the vitamins to the brain.
I love the Yasawa and Mamanuca Island groups. I have swam the caves a couple of times over the years and they are a special place! We have been to Fiji 6 times and one day hope to arrive by a sailboat.
I'm really really happy for you and what you live. May God protect and be with you.
Godspeed
Wow. That cave must be breathtaking, to experience in the flesh. Awesome.
No way!!! That's beautiful. That's great place for scuba diving
I read that book just becuase you mentioned it. I consider it one of my most favorite books and plan to read it yearly.
Wow! Beautiful !
Thank you, James, for sharing these precious moments with us.
(Hope you got the phone fixed.)
Wishing you fair winds and lots of joy.
Thanks for the video and sharing. I was in Fiji in 2000 delivering a boat to Brisbane Aus but didn't get to see the caves; now I have. Thanks again.
(Im) patiently and EAGERLY awaiting your NEXT video .. and the next & the next 😁👍✌️✊️👊☀️🌞🌬⛵️🛟⚓️
Happy birthday, young fella! Many happy returns!
Perfect place to have a sunrise coffee.
Hi James. Just wanted to say thank you. In an earlier live post you mentioned the books that inspired you. I Google searched and found a used copy of the Bounty trilogy, incorporating Mutiny/Men at sea/ Pitcairn books all in one 700 page book. Fantastic reading and I can well appreciate how you felt travelling in their wakes. I need another look at your bookshelf now for my next good read. Thanks again and Happy voyaging 👍
I love watching your vids on Sunday mornings, so chill and relaxing
Have you read The Boundless Sea by David Abulafia, James? A bit heavy on the academia, but shows what remarkable sailors the Pacific islanders were long before Europeans arrived with compass and guns. Enjoying following your own epic adventure
Yes I read it on passages, it’s incredible but very dense
Bula James... if you come again to Fiji, try the Lau islands group to the east of Fiji and Kadavu islands group in the south. Taveuni in the north close to Savusavu is an adventurous place you will also love. All are amazing places as well where you will find spectacular scenes of Fiji. Vinaka and God Bless. Best of wishes in your journey around the world!
It’s amazing how your senses are so sharp. You notice how important the wind is on your face and you can smell soil. You got skills!
You did James
Nice job and bliss
Fiji is super
On my pre bucket list
Cheers
Thanks James that was awesome mate the cave was spectacular fair winds mate !
If you have fresh water and lots of coffee beans all is good!
I am truly jealous, I can but dream of doo what your doing, may the wind be at your back and fair sea’s to you! Great content!
Hey - 100K subscribers! Good for you James. The cave made me think of a couple things. Journey to the center of the Earth. Like being inside the core of a tree that rotted from the inside and later the sea flowed into it. Notice the vertical flat spots that people wrote on look like a machined surface.
Sometimes I just cant believe how beautiful our Planet is.
What a gift we all have.
Maybe its possible that nothing in the Universe exists that is so amazing.
Brilllllliant James - thanks for sharing 👍
Wow, what a beautiful island/cave! Glad you missed the tourists! Thanks for exploring/sharing James! May fair winds be with you my friend! 🌬⛵
Wow! Huge score getting that cave all to yourself! Thanks for sharing that experience with the rest of us landlubbers.
Hi James
I like that you revive history all the best great video
Oh wow!! I think that you and the Earth recognise each other. Thank you so much. Happy Sails!
Not just the content, but the production quality is Wonderful, James...
Nice video. Looks like fun. Watching from Orlando, Florida. Thanks James.
I am so grateful to be able to follow you James. You inspire me.
The limestone erosion is so cool and the cave was incredible
Amazingly beautiful!
I tell ya...you are living the life James. I'd be doing the same but alas we have a boy who has autism. He will sail, but all we get is a few days and "home, home, home" comes up and he wants to go home. Just not in the cards to go for extended periods. Love you videos. I do have approval to take a solo excursion to Newfoundland this summer and the family will take the Suburban via ferry over. On my C&C 30 it's 440 nm direct from Halifax to my boyhood home town. Once there some family overnighters etc.,. beautiful there as well and loads of isolated anchorages. Until then, I'm tuned to your channel. Great stuff, keep on keeping on!
WOW! The only way to describe your cave visit. Thanks for bringing me along. From a landlocked follower of your epic journey residing in the North West of England.
Oh James that was so pleasing to watch you in that cave swimming peacefully!
Hey James love love your videos. I had same issue with iPad. Would not charge underway. Got back to harbor then plugged into wall power not boat battery or solar and iPad charged to 100 percent. When you get to shore power next try that. Safe travels 😊
Beautiful stuff James thanks
Spectacular footage.
Makes me plan a voyage. I might arrive there in 2 to 3 years from the Med. Ciao from Italy
Bummer! you have to get that IPad up and running, I mean I’m a land lubber and I could hardly be without mine for a day . Great video again thanks again !
Great video!
James an awesome video thanks for sharing it
One of your best
So awesome.
That cave was absolutely magical !!!
wow, just wow, those caves are incredible. Love your videos, thanks.
Gnarly... Cant imagine how you felt walking down into that... thx for sharing such great video and experiences.
Outstanding
Living the Dream 🎉
Idk what I expected for those caves but I had the same reaction you did while watching it lol~ wowwww. Thanks for sharing!
I started watching your videos from Hawaii towards Fiji and it is content and styling like what used to be on UA-cam back in the day. It's so enjoyable and it makes me want to learn sailing and leave the land and discover the wonders of traveling. Definitely been more of an aviation person but I think I need to add sail around the world as a life goal now haha Thanks for the great content and keep enjoying every moment life is offering you
Really cool!
Another Awesome episode James! Magical caves, so glad you got them to yourself! Thanks brother!💪❤️⛵
A natural cathedral 🤩 Stunning!
Man, you sure take us on a journey. In 3 years when I set off, I aspire for my channel to be half as good as yours. Thank you.
Regarding the slow charge on tablet. Take a sewing needle and scrape/ clean around the plug in port. Just stick it in there and keep scraping around in a circle and you may find lint etc come out. Do that until you don't get any more dirt and try charging again. It fixes most of slow charging issues. Hope that helps.
Yes I have done that many times
Went to Catalina a few weeks back. Totally green and looks like Costa Rica with all our rain we’ve gotten.
Chances are the connectors are just gummed up. A cotton ear bud with some alcohol will hopefully do the trick. If they're rusty then a more aggressive cleaning will be needed but the device will die eventually.
It might be worth finding some rubber weatherproofing plugs for the connector if that means you can avoid salt air exposure most of the time
It was the cord
The caves are spectacular with amazing colors, shapes and a beautiful serene place. Great to see you could enjoy it all by yourself. Thanks James for another breathtaking video.
This channel is just getting better. great film...loved Brooke Shields
Very cool!
I love the history same as you; safe travels my friend
What an incredible moment to have in that cave, and wonderful of you to share it. A lived out fantasy. Thank you
I say this a lot on your channel but simply amazing and just stunning views. That cave was just other worldly and I bet having it all to yourself was just surreal.
Thank you for sharing it with us and I really wish I could do more than like and comment but unless you want a fat old man who can barely walk and breath as crew I'm afraid it's all I can do.
Fair winds, following seas, safe travels and God Bless...
Legendary; as usual. Thanks for the quality content! Head on a swivel out there!
That video made my day. Keep it up James, we need more!!
Wow James - incredible footage of the 'Blue Lagoon' site plaus the passage....
I bet it's stressful near land with reefs and such I hope to do it where I sail in Chesapeake Bay you hit bottom your good and I'm into the history last year I sailed up to Jamestown just to try to imagine what they felt
Fantastic man ! You captured the shimmer, good on ya mate
Cheers to another great adventure 🍻 Thanks always for all the effort to film, edit. and share James !! I wondered if the water in the cave was fresh, salt, or brackish? Glad you beat the mobs in to have a swim and a video op too !!
Alright, alright, alright,...another good video! ✔️
Amazing
Very nice incredible place very nice James👍
That was awesome.
Your channel is excellent, man. I really enjoy following your journey. Fair winds, and I wish you much success.
That was sick! Cool stuff.
Dude I’m so envious
Awesome bro
Just to the right of that rock you were sitting on, there is an opening where you need to dive under for about 2 metres, and it then opens up, but there is minimal light.
Yep
This was absolutely fantastic footage!!! Thanks James!!!
Wow! What an adventure. Thanks for sharing with us!
