Ahh, my hometown. You're right. I just don't understand why people flock to Georgetown. Terrible traffic DAILY. I avoid Georgetown whenever I can. But then, it's the street food scene at night, amazing food courts, like Red Garden. Kek Lok Si, largest Buddhist temple in Malaysia is worth a look and it's free. But then to get there, another traffic problem. LOL.

We can relate 100%! Could not describe it better! There's so many positive sides of George Town but then all the negatives come and you're just not feeling right in this city 😶 We still have a few days to enjoy here and actually our attitude is changing a bit in the better direction so to say haha, so time will show what feelings will remain with us at the end!

Well Penang is a very touristy place. 🫣🫣🫣That’s how they maintain it. Lots of the places you will have to pay to go in even for the locals. If I’m not mistaken kek lok si temple there is no entrance fee. Majority places with entrance fees.
Malaysia is not pedestrian friendly unfortunately. That’s what I realised too since I came to Canada. Most of them travel by car or bikes. Due to the heat, very rare people walk in the sun there. It gets very busy during school holidays too. I see most of my friends are in Penang right now, so it could be due to that. But we love Penang sooo much and I hope you guys will love it too. We travel at least 5 times a year to Penang and Langkawi. That’s our relaxing spot. 😍😍😍

Thank you for supporting Bindiya! We appreciate all your comments and DMs 😍 We met many Malaysians on the streets who confirmed your words that Penang is a beloved city where everyone likes to come back for a bit and eat local delicacies!!! George Town itself is charming, but we much prefer the idea of driving around the island and seeing what life is like here! We rented a scooter (as you probably saw behind the scenes on our instagram), so if we manage to post it tonight we will show a different side of Penang island 👀🏝️

Agree Penang is not as easily accessible or convenient as other places, but there is a lot of history and stories. If only the walls could talk you know. Costs a bit but we benefitted from a local tour guide on our last visit. Do NOT miss nasi Kandar, and nonya cuisine(both savory and kuehs). Also char koay teow, Hokkien mee (soup version), and fried chempedak.

Bare in mind Georgetown is a Unesco World Heritage site and so its not surprising to find it touristy. Its true, along the streets of old Georgetown, there are not many sidewalks for pedestrains bearing in mind that the city was built in the early 1900s when they have not taken into consideration the safety of pedestrians who walked on the streets of old Georgetown. Penang is a food paradise, so dont leave Penang without trying Nasi Kandar, Assam Laksa, Penang prawn noodles , Char Kueh Teow, curry Mee, Penang famous Cendol etc. A lot of expats and foreigners have made Penang their second home and tourists keep coming back so it cant be wrong. You will fall in love with Penang eventually. Have fun and Enjoy the rest of your stay.

Thank you for all these instructions! I don't know how it happened, but you predicted the future haha - definitely our first impression has changed, because the city of George Town itself carries years of history and we like the new solutions they introduce 🙏
We did not expect such traffic, but now we know that showing your hand helps and you just have to adapt to the road conditions.
In addition, we now know why people come here especially for the food... It's a paradise for everyone! We still have 2 days left, so we have to catch up on some things to try because you can't leave Penang without being stuffed with food 🤪🤪

  • @idzuanazam

Georgetown has more of an old colonial port city vibe with a multicultural identity.. it doesn’t really have the island vibe as it is a relatively large island. You will get the island vibe in other places like Perhentian and Langkawi. Another thing, Georgetown is an economic hub, 2nd to KL, thus with so much business happening it will be very busy during weekdays. Its amazing how they can still maintain the old heritage areas.

    • @JayandKarolina
      @JayandKarolina  Рік тому +1

We completely agree with what you write! It's really amazing how they can continue to maintain old heritage areas while creating new ones popular with young people, e.g. through modern cafes or murals!
Our first impression was not very positive due to the crowds of tourists and the weather, but we already know that we had wrong opinions - the fact that we did not like the city at first glance does not mean that it is not worth visiting! If we succeed, today we will upload a video that shows a different perspective of the island, which was definitely one of the best days we had the opportunity to experience in Malaysia 😍

Tourism in Penang, Bali and Phuket - three of the biggest resort islands in Asia are designed with the western tourists in mind. Can't blame the locals for capitalising on it as these locations are natural locations that naturally attract westerners. So the street art is part of Penang's effort to be different from other resorts in Asia. However nowadays, Phuket, Bali, Malacca and elsewhere have copied Penang's street art culture.

I would agree Penang laksa is mildly fishy. You should try Penang Hokkien noodle ( Penang style prawn noodle) , they are not fishy, if you can tolerate Kai see hor fun in Ipoh, I'm sure you will like this. Look for 888 Hokkien Mee.
Other foods to try, I would suggest Pasembur (be mindful to choose no more than 3 item, it's very pricey), Lor bak ( stuffed pork roll), Char Kway teow, white curry noodle, penang's apam balik is very fancy with their ingredients, nasi kandar( indian Muslim rice).
I've told you about the Red Prawn Durian, which is milder in smell, more sweet and custardy. It originated from Penang, hopefully you can find it slightly cheaper there.

When visiting Malaysia, especially the charming villages, you’ll encounter many locals who offer goods at remarkably low prices due to their genuine kindness. While these deals may seem inexpensive, especially considering foreign exchange rates, I encourage you not to take advantage of their generosity. If you can, consider paying a bit more than what they ask; your extra contribution is a small gesture that can make a big difference to the local sellers. Remember, supporting local businesses not only helps sustain their livelihoods but also reciprocates the warm hospitality they offer to all visitors. Let’s show your appreciation and ensure a positive impact during your travels!

The official pavement is the bit under covers at the shops. These are known as shophouses here (shophouses because the business is downstairs and the people lived upstairs). The British also included legislation that required fivefootways (in Malay kaki lima) - the area for pedestrians in front of the shops, traditionally five feet wide. (In areas in the region not administered by the British, the fivefootway might be missing.) The city centre in Georgetown is admittedly a bit chaotic. Try going to the beaches or going to Penang Hill with the funicular railway.

Oh wow! We did not expect that these 5 stop rules were introduced! In fact, it is possible to move on these covered sidewalks, but it is not always possible because they are blocked with cars - probably because people have their businesses, deliveries, or simply houses there.

But food in penang is the best way better than ipoh, and if you look past the touristy things you will find the authentic stuff. The British created Penang, so maybe not so bad there. Before they arrived it was jungle.

Heh! It's funny you can't stand fish as a British. I mean Fish and Chips is a staple there :)

@@JayandKarolina It was interesting because I just came from India then and didn't know the Malay Language and that was a 1-2 year transition to Malaysian education. Out of the 3: India, British and Malaysian, I probably would rate British as the best just because there was so little studies to do (unlike India..more mugging) and more emphasis on outdoor curriculum and sports. I found the British boarding school to be fantastic. I mean in our Home economics class we learned to cook Shepherds pie and stuff (because my parents were spending fantastic prices for the boarding too)

I saw one comment saying that you were complaining a lot, but as a Malaysian i rather you tell the truth instead of faking your reactions

That’s the approach indeed! We believe it’s always better to say what we really think rather than saying what “should” be said. What I find interesting is that I did not complain that much in my opinion 🤔 We still liked the George Town!

We somewhat agree! But after spending couple of days more in here we could have properly explored and Penang is not just the George Town - so there's definitely more to it! In today's video you'll be able to see what we love the island for!!! And a small hint: we're going to Langkawi in 2 days indeed 🤭
