There's a reason Spirited Away has held the crown as the best animated movie ever for almost 20 years now. IF you're one for emotionally moving movies though I'd suggest watching Your Name and A Silent Voice it's some of the few movies to hit the emotional level of Coco and Spirited Away.

About the plotholes in Inside Out: if the core memories were sent to HQ, the memories would have turned into anger, disgust or fear, so they had to go with Joy. The fact that they wanted to way her up, shows how much Joy wants her to be happy as soon as possible and a bit of distrust in the other emotions, and fits her personality perfectly.
That was only happening with sadness, and not the other emotions. There are plenty of moments where Joy holds sad memories and they stay sad. It was happening with sadness because the move was making her sad without realising, and as soon as sadness touched the emotions, it spread to them because she wanted to feel sad from them anyway.
Fun fact: the reason Rango looks as good as it does it's because apparently its release was delayed, and the animators just... Kept improving on it in the meanwhile
2 things: 1. I remember being absolutely horrified of Spirited Away as a kid. For some reason the parents turning into pigs at the beginning scared me half to death as well as a lot of the creatures. I recently re-visited the movie being a teenager, and oh my god I cant see how I didn’t love this movie. It is such a masterpiece in every way possible and I’m so glad my dad kept trying to get me to watch it. It overjoyed me to see Schaffrillas go in deep detail on why it’s a masterpiece. Truly one of the best movies in existence. 2. This is kind of random but I have been watching ratatouille since I was 3 years old and I remember watching the scene where remmy is climbing up the building before that really beautiful shot of Paris and looking at the lady putting on makeup in the window and my four year old brain thinking “Hey, I wonder if that’s Remmys mom?” Lol it’s really random.
Spirited away also scared me as a kid as well which is sad considering how good the movie is and the fact that the scene that scared me was when she was pulling out all that junk from the spirit
Fun fact: George Miller, the director of Happy Feet, revealed that if he had to choose between death and forcefully making Happy Feet 3, he just said "kill me"
Not quite correct. In the interview in Question, he was asked about forcing himself to write a movie, with Happy Feet 3 being used as the given example. As his reply, he said that inspiration has to strike about a movie and not being able to force out a plot outta thin air. So if someone put a gun to his head and told him to write Happy Feet 3, he'd rather they pulled the trigger. Which yes, means he did say that, but taken out of its context has a way different tone.
Why? He made the movie. He chose to have a sequel. He approved the script, the designs, the music, everything. He went through with it, and did all the same for the sequel (that I haven’t bothered watching because honestly who would)
@@yaboihuey5298 think he just meant that he had no idea what to do for a third movie or how to continue the story characters Plus the sequel underperformed and led to one of the studios that helped make it shut down, and like I mentioned in my last comment the deaths of Brittany Murphy and especially Robin Williams definitely don’t help
RATATOUILLE IS BEAUTIFUL. it took them seven years to make. they went to paris and studied the architecture INTENSELY. plus la vie is a beautiful song.
Oof one month later but yeah they even consulted chefs from everything there is. From chopping ingredients to the color of your pots and pans. It made the movie a masterpiece
Yeah I know right there's just something about it that makes it so beautiful whether it be from the coolest quotes to the delicious delicacies to the awesome ass hell antagonist ( talking about Anton Ego not the short stack chef which I think is the only bad thing about the movie ) that just makes the film so mesmerizing. Also I agree, Pixar is really good at music
What I also love is that they don't make the antagonist the main problem. They make themselves the problem. Their failures, pride, and lies complicate things for them, instead of the antagonist making their lives miserable.
This is arguably schaff's most timeless video. Also fun fact, the only two movies in this list he hasn't reviewed in any other ranking or full on analysis video is Happy Feet and Rango. EDIT: Schaffrillas released a new video where he ranked every George Miller video, and he talked about Happy Feet in that video. This comment honestly did not age very well.
honestly his analysis of happy feet is so confusing to me, especially the bit when he says that the story shifts away from mumble and 'suddenly' switches to religion and environmentalism. It feels like he wasnt really paying attention because the movie was always about those things. They were just in the background until they play a bigger role in mumbles story. the old penguins always thought mumble had no place in their society because they have very traditional views, which leads them to denying the existence of the humans that are causing the food shortage present throughout the movie. I wanna see him make a full review of it sometime just so i can see why he feels the way he does about it.
My opinion, but Happy Feet is a beautiful film, taking the beginning of the film, is just art! The dance sequences all were amazing using motion capture. It also teaches a great message! No wonder why people hate this film directed by GEORGE MILLER, THE SAME GUY FOR THE GREATEST ACTION FILM OF ALL TIME! Happy Feet deserves recognition and is awesome.
Fun Fact: In the spiderverse Miles is running at 12fps while Peter is at 24fps and as the movie progresses Miles fps slowly builds up into 24 frames by the end. Even in the animation he made a progressive journey
Fantastic Mr. Fox has charming writing and amazing character development. The whole joke of the movie is that the animals behave like sophisticated humans.
I still think Wall-E is under appreciated - the music, the emotion created from characters that don’t talk, the green message, the laziness message, the artificial intelligence sentience message, the love story, the incredible animation, the amazing story telling, I could go on... it’s such a unique movie compared to most other animated Pixar films. The villain is a machine which doesn’t make it evil, right, or wrong - it’s just following orders. It’s literally an embodiment of “show, don’t tell”. For me, it’s on par with the incredibles.
That's why Wall e is my 3rd favorite movie of all time. I ranked kikis Delivery service first and spirited away second. I now am ded because 99% of the world just killed me
I remember my Mom told me that we saw Wall-E in theaters when I was a baby, and I had just learned how to speak. We had gotten to the Wall-E amnesia scene and everyone was getting really teary. Then, out of nowhere, when I saw Eva with a sad face, I apparently spoke “She’s so sad” in the softest voice ever and made everyone cry. So that happened
...''We didn't watched any of the movies so let's give the award to Pixar.'' award. My favorite statement of this year. Edit: I just watched Ratatouille for the first time, IT WAS FREAKİNG AMAZİNG. I can't believe i didn't watched it before.
The problem is not Disney. The problem is the juries are always favoring Disney movies while ignoring stop motion and foreign movies. They either need to change the award to the best American movie and stop pretending they are diverse or get more foreign candidates and do their job properly, especially when it comes to animation. Yes, some Disney and Pixar movies absolutely deserved winning it but the way the Academy Award sees animation lesser is disrespectful to the art form of film. Animation is a medium, not a genre.
For some reason I didn't know people disliked Brave. I loved that movie as a kid and it's dear to my heart and she's my second favorite Disney princess after Mulan
Fr I love brave. Maybe it’s just me seeing myself in a character for having a mixed relationship with my mum, but I relate to this movie so much and I enjoyed its story
i remember adoring the movie as a child. and also adoring brother bear. and also adoring the tom and jerry movie. I was so so surprised when i learned that they were hated movies!
My favorite detail from Incredibles that I've never seen anyone point out- The scene were Violet and Dash are in the jungle being hunted down. Violet was hiding in the water and the gunmen spotter her, about to shoot, and Dash rushes in and beats him up. The gunmen manages to punch him, and is going to shoot Dash as he's recovering from the pain when, in a panic, Violet jumps in front of him and creates a force field just in time to protect her and her brother from the onslaught of bullets. "How are you doing that?!" "I don't know!" Violet didn't know that force field would appear. She didn't know her powers were capable of protecting her brother, but she went to protect him anyways. She jumped in front of Dash thinking she would get hit by the bullets so her baby brother could run to safety. I cry every time I watch that scene.
The lego movie is not here because this is a list about movies that one best animated film of the year the lego movie didnt win it WHICH IS STUPID BECAUSE THE LEGO MOVIE SHOULD HAVE ON BEST ANIMATED FILM THAT YEAR P
That’s what auto was meant to be. He just follows his programming. The humans on the Axiom just follow their programming. They all just do what they’ve always done. No curiosity, no love. Just existence and cold logic. That’s what makes him such an incredible contrast to WALL-E.
What I also love about Ratatouille: They are the main problem, not the antagonist. Not having a huge antagonist allowed the audience to see more personal problems that the character created for himself. It also let us see personal growth through new experiences and passion for something the character loves instead of the whole "we must fight evil" or "this guy's trying to make my life hard" cliche.
yup! same goes for spirited away. sure, yubaba (the witch) is kinda the antagonist, but the real problem is chihiro being scared, and her overcoming that. while yubaba does some evil things, in the end she is more like an actual person that just happens to be a bit mean, other than a "villain". that is great since, just like ratatouille, it let's us focus on the main character, and is also more realistic
Hear me out: Zootopia is a fable. It's a story about animals that has a theme that applies to the real world and teaches people how to behave in society.
Speaking of attention to detail in Spiderverse, the creators even went as far as to make Peter B’s frame rate different from Miles’. Throughout the movie the spider heroes are animated at 24 frames a second while Miles is animated at *12* frames a second, why is that? Well, because Miles isn’t a real Spider-Man until the climax of the movie where he gets his own suit and realizes who he is. He progresses to got from 12 all the way back up to 24 like his fellow spider companions.
i can’t believe you mentioned zootopia here without mentioning how it was completely robbed from kubo and the two strings, which is an absolute masterpiece and one of the greatest animated films ever created
i would like to think some random comment for reminding me what kubo and the two strings was called i have been meaning to watch that again for ages but could never find the name

He needs to see and talk about Princess Mononoke. It's my favorite movie beating out Godzilla vs Destroyah. I like Godzilla for personal reasons and think it's entertaining and it's ending is one of my favorites as a Godzilla fan but Princess Mononoke is probably the best movie I have ever seen.
@@razkable Wind Rises is amazing. This might be controversial but I like it more than Grave of The Fire Flies. Prolly cuz that movie makes me want to die of sadness.
Fun fact! The reason why in Happy Feet there's this "aliens" stuff and the movie switches his theme so much is because there was going to be a subplot of an incoming alien invasion that was going to happen in the second half, and the main character was going to save the world by dancing. I'm not kidding. The movie was going to end with a penguin saving the world with his sick moves, impressing the aliens so much that they spare the planet. It was cut midway via production, forcing the writers to remake the entire second half of the movie, when the director and everyone else realized how dumb it was. Interestingly, some elements of this version remained, like the ending credits set in space.
@@RYMAN1321 keep the metaphor make the aliens be intentionally be pushing the trash towards the South Pole because the aliens value sentient life more than nonsentient life and they get impressed by the penguins dance lol
I have to say, I really like Elsa. I was about 10 when that film came out and I had pretty big behaviour issues because of undiagnosed mental disabilities and depression/anxiety. I really saw myself in her. She was an oldest daughter who was left to hold everything together in the wake of tragedy, despite not being emotionally able to, and ended up developing harmful and uncomfortable coping mechanisms that isolated her from her peers, JUST LIKE ME. It was the kind of representation I really needed at that point, and seeing her get help in the film encouraged me to reach out to my teachers, and later a therapist.
Hard to believe it’s a decade old this year. I was in my Sophomore year of High School when it came out, now I just got my Associates Degree. LOL Man how time flies!
The criticisms of Inside Out’s plot holes kind of remind me of the “plot holes” in The Journey to the West. Yes, Sun-Wukong could have flown Xuanzang to the West, but the whole thing is an allegory for life and achieving enlightenment. Inside Out is an allegory for accepting emotions other than happiness and maturing and growing as a person. I love that film so much.
Toy Story 2 Woody to Buzz: "We will be together for Infinity and Beyond". Toy Story 3 Buzz to Woody: "We will be together for Infinity and Beyond". Toy Story 4: *OOF*
you perfectly encapsulated my feelings on Spirited Away - its my favourite movie of all time and I've never quite been able to put it into words how much I adore it
He rewatched Happy Feet for his upcoming George Miller ranking and lowered his score from a 3/10 to a 2/10. He updated his letterboxd ranking and also stated on Twitter that he regrets putting it above Brave in this video. Give us "Why Happy Feet Is A Cinematic Disaster" already!

One of my favorite details about Coco is Miguel's pregnant mom who gives birth by the end of the movie. Babies are a symbol of new beginnings, and its like a new beginning for the Riviera family
There’s a difference between most powerful and most iconic. Iconic quotes are measured in popularity, and the super suit is definitely more popular. I, however, agree that this quote is the most impactful and meaningful.
"It's only fitting that he gets this movie's most iconic line: 'And when everyone's super...no one will be." Excuse me? I think you're forgetting something. *H O N E Y ?* *_WHERE'S MY SUPERSUIT?_*
Honestly i think the promise he made to Ellie and the promise to save the bird aren't the same in his head. I think the moment is more him knowing who he wife was and knowing that she would have chosen to save the bird, and him honoring that knowledge by letting go of trying to get to Paradise falls and instead saving Kevin, because he knows Ellie would have done the same and it's a better way to honor her in his mind. Idk if that makes sense but that's the feeling I get
I love Up, and while I think that the opening overshadows the rest of the movie, it’s still really good. The jokes are funny, I love the connection between Carl and Russell and every scene with them. Charles Muntz isn’t an amazing villain, but I don’t view him as the actual villain, he’s just there to have a conflict in the third act, the real conflict is Carl and him having to let go of his and Ellie’s dream, and that’s why the movie is so good, yes most of it is a mediocre kids movie, but the ongoing conflict with Carl and him wanting to fulfill his and Ellie’s dream is what drives this movie home.
The opening is the high point but the rest of the movie does have some really powerful and funny moments. I'm pretty sure Schaff skimmed through the movie and was nitpicking it. It's not the best Pixar movie (in my opinion) but it's better than Curse of the Were Rabbit, Shrek, Inside Out, and a lot of other movies he puts ahead of it.
CAT DURGS I’m about commit Destruction 100 on this 2 year old who doesn’t know what good movies are. You’re the type of person to say the Emoji Movie was a masterpiece. “wHy. It SUcKs.” Either your name is CAT DRUGS or your on them.
I never watched spirited away before and I watched and I was blown away. It is so wonderful, that as you said it's hard to do it justice with only words. It really is just an immersive, lovely experience with fluid animations and an incredible, ethereal story.
As someone that grew up on veggitales, ratatouille, Bee movie, and Kung Fu Panda due to those being my only dvds, I love you put Remy up with the big boys
I only grew up with 2/4s of the things you speak of (Ratatouille and The Bee Movie) but then the other two I was obsessed with are extremely obscure live-action movies. Fly Away Home (idk if that’s spelled right or if it’s even the right title) and Milo and Otis. Well, I assume they’re obscure, because I’ve literally never met anyone that had heard of either one, and I’ve never, not once in my lifetime, seen any sort of reference to either in the media.
On second thought, maybe they only exist in my mind and my mom just plays along when I mention them, because I haven’t seen either since I was like 8 (eh I have no idea what age but very long time). I would look it up but I’m terrified of the idea that they’re actually terrible movies, and that my 4 year old (or 5-9 year old) Brain was just enamored with shit that looks decent to a small child.
Your Name is overrated lol, sure it looks great, but if you saw lot's of anime the story isn't something special. Makoto Shinkai just makes his movies with the same scheme (Tenki no Ko). A Silent Voice grabbed me more emotionally (especially when I struggled with high depression back then) and I think this one needs more attention.
@@kaziq1x Whilst I agree with what you're saying about the Your Name's story, the animation is so SOO impressive. Especially for a traditionally animated film. The only reason I ended up watching the film was because I had seen clips of it online and seen the gorgeous animation. After which point, at least for me personally, story was secondary. So I wouldn't really call "Your name", over-rated, but I'd definitely say it was great but flawed
Fun Fact: Happy Feet was originally intented to be for mature audiences, in the first draft of the script there was swearing, death scenes, the emperor penguins' religion would be more like a sect, and at the end there would be penguin-aliens who intended to destroy the Earth due to the damage the humans cause to the ecosystem but they change their minds after they start to help the penguins. But of course, the studio decided they wanted a family film and they scrapped all these ideas
that movie still sounds awful, but like, the funny kind of awful. LIKE HOW DO YOU MAKE SENSE OF AN EMPEROR PENGUIN CULT, PENGUIN ALIENS, AND THEN A WAR BETWEEN PENGUINS AND HUMANS OVER THE ENVIRONMENT?! HOW DOES THAT EVEN HAPPEN?!
That scene scared the fucking shit out of me when I was young. I was terrified of monkeys as a child for some reason, and the screaming, the bared teeth, the bulging eyes and the clashing cymbals made it way worse. I vividly remember a nightmare I had that made me cry in my sleep out of fear where I was paralysed and my vision was blurred to the point of everything being unintelligible, which followed the monkey from Toy Story 3 touching and stroking my face while a pair of flashy feather sunglasses squeezed my face. I cried so hard I gave myself a fever and couldn’t go to school.
When I was a kid, I never understood the "when everyone's super no one will be" but now, after leaving a gifted class for a normal highschool, I finally understood... And it's beautiful
i hate the villain, since he worked for his power and is still an anatagonist while all the good guys were born with their power. but it's still a good movie.
@@tvangelistIts not how he got the powers that makes him a villain, its what he does with them. He sent a robot to destroy and potentially kill so he could swoop in and pretend to be a hero
15:21 Bro, the frog saying "I'LL LET YOU SLEEP WITH MY SISTER!" to try and convince Rango to help him was hilarious. Same for the one bird who literally wanted Rango to die lol
Something about a Spirited away feels like coming home. Everything is so familiar and comfortable yet engaging and lively. Easily one of the greatest films ever made
I am in love with spirited away, but I never really thought about why. Nothing really fits in to a plot, and it’s so strange. I can’t really put my finger on what makes it a good movie, but it just is
@Mustiboi Salman that's the point of the story, she drowns as a person, she used to be an annoying little kid, but the spirit world changed her, an in the end, she leaves as a new person. she is supposed to be annoying in the beginning
I have such a connection with Spirited Away because not only is it a beautiful movie, but it’s a movie me, my sister, and my brother all share a connection with. My sister showed it to me, and I showed it to my brother. I remember when I first showed him, I was deathly scared of what his reaction would be. Because he’s autistic, and doesn’t really like or connect with a lot of movies. But with this one, he loved it. He loved every minute, and tuned in to every line. It’s a beautiful movie that I still watch with him regularly. And a movie that when I first watched it, I didn’t expect much. But was pleasantly surprised by not only the story, but the charm of ghibli in general. It opened my eyes to the whole company, and showed the magic that they have. It’s an amazing movie that deserves every thing it got.

Asmosis Jones Okay I get the cgi bit, but normal animated American films are worse than Japanese films? While I agree that Japanese animated films are absolutly fantastic, and most American animated films can’t really compete, saying that throws a ton of fantastic movies, such as Spider-Man into the spider verse, out the window.

2 things:
2. This is kind of random but I have been watching ratatouille since I was 3 years old and I remember watching the scene where remmy is climbing up the building before that really beautiful shot of Paris and looking at the lady putting on makeup in the window and my four year old brain thinking “Hey, I wonder if that’s Remmys mom?” Lol it’s really random.
bro same spirited away scared the shit out of me as a kid for some reason
Young me ran away when the characters began to get eaten
That pig sence still gives me shivers to this day
Spirited away also scared me as a kid as well which is sad considering how good the movie is and the fact that the scene that scared me was when she was pulling out all that junk from the spirit
I’m with you ghibli go kinda psycho with things in movies XD
He went through with it, and did all the same for the sequel (that I haven’t bothered watching because honestly who would)
@@lappskaus doesn’t help that Robin Williams died. It sucks enough that they had to recast Brittany Murphy having to recast him would be too much

Also as crab Guy said it is very sophisticated
And sophisticated yet also funny are my personal favorite
Best Movie all time
What I also love is that they don't make the antagonist the main problem.
Good point. I haven't seen the movie in a while though so I wouldn't be able to tell

Spiderverse and Spirited Away are some of the most beautiful, emotional movies ever made. They are amazing works of art.
Honestly, I think it's even better than Incredibles!
Why are you booing him? He's right! 🙌🙌
Hence why a lot of people hate Pixar. For a reason that they have no control over....
Reckno64 It's more Pixar and Disney who are the target
@@One-pz3zk yeah pretty much...

My favorite detail from Incredibles that I've never seen anyone point out-
The scene were Violet and Dash are in the jungle being hunted down.
"How are you doing that?!"
"I don't know!"
Violet didn't know that force field would appear. She didn't know her powers were capable of protecting her brother, but she went to protect him anyways. She jumped in front of Dash thinking she would get hit by the bullets so her baby brother could run to safety. I cry every time I watch that scene.

What I also love about Ratatouille:
They are the main problem, not the antagonist.

Paranorman should've won because stop motion needs more recognition.
Idk if that makes sense but that's the feeling I get
“Brave is bad”: I sleep
“Up is overrated. The opening is really good but the rest of the movie is fluff”: I wake and respectfully cock shotgun.
I was hoping to find a comment like this, Up is just so wholesome
I mean... he kinda right doe
He’s got a point
The opening is the high point but the rest of the movie does have some really powerful and funny moments.
I'm pretty sure Schaff skimmed through the movie and was nitpicking it.
It's not the best Pixar movie (in my opinion) but it's better than Curse of the Were Rabbit, Shrek, Inside Out, and a lot of other movies he puts ahead of it.

The fact that "Your Name" and "A Silent Voice" weren't even nominated is genuinely depressing.
@@kaziq1x its better than the boss baby
What'd you expect, the Oscars are politically biased
both are incredibly overrated. even though silent voice is overrated it's good. your name on the other hand..
That movie would've been 10x more interesting
that movie still sounds awful, but like, the funny kind of awful.
LIKE HOW DO YOU MAKE SENSE OF AN EMPEROR PENGUIN CULT, PENGUIN ALIENS, AND THEN A WAR BETWEEN PENGUINS AND HUMANS OVER THE ENVIRONMENT?! HOW DOES THAT EVEN HAPPEN?!
That sounds so unhinged and way better than the final result.
What the hell? Really? That is insane to believe.
The we got is way more superior.

who else thought that the monkey in toy story 3 was terrifying
That scene scared the fucking shit out of me when I was young. I was terrified of monkeys as a child for some reason, and the screaming, the bared teeth, the bulging eyes and the clashing cymbals made it way worse. I vividly remember a nightmare I had that made me cry in my sleep out of fear where I was paralysed and my vision was blurred to the point of everything being unintelligible, which followed the monkey from Toy Story 3 touching and stroking my face while a pair of flashy feather sunglasses squeezed my face. I cried so hard I gave myself a fever and couldn’t go to school.

Something about a Spirited away feels like coming home. Everything is so familiar and comfortable yet engaging and lively. Easily one of the greatest films ever made
Its definitely my third favorite movie of all time
Wow... the way u said it made me realise thats why i love ghibi studio
@Mustiboi Salman no, you just dont understand the movie
I am in love with spirited away, but I never really thought about why. Nothing really fits in to a plot, and it’s so strange. I can’t really put my finger on what makes it a good movie, but it just is
@Mustiboi Salman that's the point of the story, she drowns as a person, she used to be an annoying little kid, but the spirit world changed her, an in the end, she leaves as a new person. she is supposed to be annoying in the beginning
I’m pretty sure spirited away was listed as a “coming of age” film
That is what it's about. She had to grow heavily in a short amount of time to overcome her extreme situation
My english teacher taught us that a coming of age story is called a Bildungsroman. Just thought that was interesting lol
Like shafrillis's shrek teacher said, "It all comes together like a big beautiful tapestry."
