Tbf it would be quite mean/harmful to hire someone specifically for being immensely ugly. Than bc he is supposed to be someone with dwarfism the character would becomes even more just a spectacle and the actor would likely be made to suffer due to the huge attention the role got.
The number of actors who are ok with being cast specially for not looking good is also quite small I think.
Some ppl would also say that the attention is also a reason why the actor for that role becomes kind of a representation for all real ppl with dwarfism - especially since there hasn't been such a big role explicitly for someone so small in the longest time.
(Harry Potter goblins are smaller roles and don't count with all the prosthetics in their faces and the Willow reboot came later)
So if you cast someone hideous in that role the point for which he is called a monster in the books - being a dwarf AND ugly - may become in some viewers and other ppls minds get lost and instead it might seem that he is ugly BECAUSE he is a dwarf, like that is what all of them look like.
Or you run the risk of the viewers either agreeing that he must be a monster or just pitying him for his looks. Both would have been fun to see refuted by the way the character is actually written but I can also see how that might have limited the role in the series.
The whole thing was highly discussed beforehand and during casting and honestly I don't think there is one easy answer.

    • @Chiisainyo
      @Chiisainyo Місяць тому +15

It was the only 'but" I had with the casting of Peter Dinklage. He was too handsome to be Tyrion.
And in the characterization they could have at least given him the heterochromia and the too blond almost white hair that made his father suspect he was not a lion, but a dragon.
The books are so full of details that plenty get lost on the tv show.

[a long rant has been written by a die-hard Sansa defender in light of comments on this video either saying she is vain for rejecting Tyrion or that Tyrion is an angel in this scene and such a great guy. Don’t read if you are easily butthurt]
Maybe everyone here only saw the show. The show made Tyrion A LOT nicer and this section of the book is not the full scene. Tyrion climbs off of Sansa after already ordering her to undress, climbing on top of her, groping her, and being moments away from consummating their marriage. For everyone saying how kind and sympathetic Tyrion is to Sansa’s situation let me spell out what his POV narration in the full scene is saying: He sees how frightened she is and does not feel pity for her, he feels disgusted with himself. And not disgusted with himself that he almost r*ped a child, but disgusted with himself that he is ugly.
That’s why he backs off. Sansa is also twelve in this scene, not 14 like in the show (which is seriously no better). He is not so disgusted with having a child bride in the books, even though she is disgusted by him. And why wouldn’t she be? His family killed her family, Tyrion himself led his family’s soldiers that they had in King’s Landing against Stannis /for/ his family, he is missing his nose and half of his face is peeled off or covered in a gnarly scar (it is much worse in the books than in the show) - he looks terrifying and as far as Sansa knows he IS terrifying. He is a Lannister and has fought for the Lannisters. Just because he doesn’t enjoy beating her in full court does not mean he might not still be awful.
She has every right to despise members of that family and be afraid and terrified of her situation. Let alone she’s a twelve year old girl under the full impression she’s about to be r*ped. Yes, being in your mid to late 20s and then bedding your child bride is r*pe. Yes, what Tyrion did to Sansa, even though he backed off at the end and didn’t go through with it, was in fact still SA. It’s not just about what he did or didn’t do, it’s about the fear inflicted upon Sansa by what he might’ve done. Almost being r*ped is still a trauma.
The hate that Sansa gets for rejecting Tyrion while she is a twelve year old girl rejecting this 20-something year old man who wants to sleep with her (and we know that by his vividly detailed erection) or the comments talking about “I hope they end up together in the end because it would show she’s grown and not as vain anymore” HER REJECTING TYRION IS NOT ABOUT VANITY. “But what about her trying to find his beauty?” Trying to find the beauty in the beast who is currently on top of her trying to force this child to do s*xual acts is her attempting to COPE it is a SURVIVAL INSTINCT she is trying to do what a lot of r*pe victims do and alter the meaning of the moment in her mind because the reality is so painful that if she doesn’t change something about the situation or focus on something else it will break her young mind. This is a real human survival instinct that particularly children do in reaction to SA and is the cause of them developing Dissociative Identity Disorder or multiple personality disorder later in life - oh hello Alayne, the made up alter ego she takes on in the next book 👀 that’s not intentional by the author at all. Sansa is literally constantly disassociating after the trauma of King’s Landing and trying to make a new persona to protect herself after she gets out.
And in case I haven’t made it clear enough regarding any of the hate she’s been receiving, SHE’S A DAMN TWELVE YEAR OLD. BEING SA’D IN THIS SCENE. TWWWWEEEEEEELLLLLLVE. TWELVE.

This so much! I cannot understand why in the TV show they opted to make scenes like Dany and Drogo's wedding night way LESS consensual and still have them fall in love the same way, and then with Sansa's story they took this trauma with Tyrion out but then went WAY harder with the horrible abusive marriage to Ramsey Bolton. Its like they went from "Nah we can't show a kid get SAed on screen" to "Okay shes just old enough that we can go SUPER dark with it to prove this guy is properly evil" even though raping Dany repeatedly doesn't make Drogo evil apparently? That show was so all over the place sometimes, even when it was good.

I mean from what I read he has done some terrible things. But then we also have to add that a person can change as they get older. By medieval standards of which this character and everything else should be judged, he is redeemed from much of it. He is one of very few that can be somewhat considered good in the period that the show and books are set. He shows respect, he respects those in mourning and isn't unnecessarily cruel, he doesn't kill without reason and if push comes to shove he steps up to the cause. He has also learned how to love.

The way Tyrion is after ASOS takes a turn for the worse, in that he says and does certain atrocities, and even though these are in no way justifiable or to be forgotten, it's a real testament to how good his writing is; despite being treated horribly his entire life, Tyrion manages to still be a somewhat compassionate character who commits neccesary evils in the first three books. We see him slip a few times because deep down he is a intensely angry person who is disgusted by the people around him and how they treat him. It's only after finding out about Tysha, killing Shae and Tywin that he finally snaps. His actions aren't excusable, but you can understand why his life leads him to the point he gets to.

Ain't no damn way, I'm not playing with Tyrion's mess today. Sansa has always been a character that I've just tried to like. I can't stand her, she hits a nerve but I don't want her to be hurt. Season 8 has my heart bitter but that's not the canon. I'm happy as hell that this wasn't in the show. This change was a moment that I saw Tyrion as a better man. He didn't take advantage of Ned's child, her being Cat's daughter. I took the scene as him being able to respect his wife. Tyrion won me with that.
That book knowledge will mess up your POV almost every time. I'm so happy this wasn't how I first received that moment. Ooooowweweeee. I'm learning that Tyrion is a different character in the books. Sansa scored a win that day.

At the end of the book, Trion gets his older personality back, but hes still a creature of rage and spite, wanting to ruin Westeros at large. He has become the foil of his father, as Tywin put himself first, his family second, and Westeros at large a very close third.
As bad as Tywin was when it came to petty issues, he largely did what he could to keep Westeros at large cohesive and in peace until he had to drop the hammer.
