That’s because Range Rover engineers worked on the F-Pace. Unlike Discovery, it’s a proper SUV.

Probs coz it got JLR's own AWD system unlike the Disco Sport that has a Haldex system, works well on tarmac not so in off road conditions
and they do have a mode for off road mine was able to tow a trailer while having a wheel In the air so id say im very impressed with. this street trimmed suv

The discovery sport is the lowest level car in their lineup so it’s understandable
@@timglascock5558 The two Land Rover's you see here are based on an older steel platform (which is a derivative of the Ford D8 platform), the F-Pace meanwhile shares the same all new almost fully aluminium ground up architecture with the Range Rover Velar called the D7a. The Range Rover Velar would be even better because the standard coil spring models feature additional front suspension travel, and the optional air suspension increases the ground clearance as well

Well, there are Q7 and Q8 in another video. They are much better. Watch it and you will see that Quattro is still good.
@@SUVBattle The new ultra system in their smaller cars doesn't hold up as well as I would have hoped, but their nicer models still have great systems! I wonder if the SQ5 has the same Ultra system, or one more akin to the Q8?
Not all Quattros are equal. Q5 has cheaper 4wd system unlike Q7, Q8 with Torsen system

Keep this series up, it's lot more interesting than many standard reviews, although some models are old but the technology is still the same in new SUVs so 👍, eagerly waiting for next shootout.

The Discovery Sport is an evolution of the Freelander. It’s not really a Discovery. So for me not a surprise there. The Freelander was not an proper off-roader as well. The C3 on the other hand was a nice surprise. My only complain is that the electronics are taking out all the fun from off-roading. 🤣🤣 I still off-road using my old Defender and a Discovery 1. At least is more challenging.

Not Discovery. D Sport is very different car but they look similar from a distance.
Bcuz is a 2.0 diesel and it weights a lot is a 7 seater too should be the 3.0 v6 with dat difference of weight behind discovery and other suv's
@@xhoeldaci9534, while the Disco Sport is indeed offered as 7-seater, it has never been offered with the 3.0 v6 diesel and weight is not such a problem. It's just the fact it is not a Discovery, totally different platform. Most component are shared with Evoque.
A bad discovery
The Jag performed best especially as it had no "Off-Road" mode to run on yet it navigated the course with ease.
The Jag does have an off-road mode. The BMW doesn't though.

As a Disco owner, that one stung a little bit.
The F-Pace did surprisingly well. I think arguably it might have the best overall package on and off-road, looks and price point.
Yeah but the electronics and Center stack are unreliable as heck I would not buy anything from Range Rover Jaguar. The X3 in contrast is a very reliable SUV at this point with the I drive and xDrive system along with the ZF 8-speed are Unbreakable.

Interesting how the F-Pace brother would do - the Velar has an air suspension and some engines (6-cyls) are offered with optional locking diff at the back. It also has the terrain response 2.
The Discovery Sport is NOT a Land Rover Discovery. It uses a different compact platform. The Discovery is offered with the the V6 diesel 306PS, which has a superb torque (700Nm) and is also offered with optional locking rear diff which makes night and day difference for climbing rough terrain.

IMO X3 impressed the most. Others failed. F Pace was also pretty good
The main difference in the performance between both the Evoque and Discovery Sport is due to the differences in Terrain Response. The DS, when placed in Grass, Gravel Snow still did well, however, that program is designed for very light off road work where the ground is firm but slippery. Perfect for wet roads, ice, wet but firm grass, gravel etc or on roads when it is pouring down with rain. It has a very long and cautions accelerator feel also which isn’t ideal for the terrain shown. Mud and Ruts would have been the preferred Terrain Response program for that terrain. MandR is perfect for more severe off road work, where long suspension travel is needed. The vehicle also starts off in the ultra low 1st gear rather than 2nd as it does in Grass, Gravel, Snow mode. Terrain Response 2, when set in Auto tends to configure itself automatically to Mud and Ruts mode by default when it senses it is off road, which could be the reason the Evoque and the DS performed differently as per the above explanations.

I've owned BMW SAV's for years and was always impressed with their ability to travel even on pure ice roads where I live in the winter season. They have a very responsive traction system along with that 50-50 weight distribution which doesn't hurt either.
Exactly. And X-drive seems to be tuned equally good throughout the whole X model line, unlike JLR or VAG as this test shows.

I have a 2021 X3 30i and it impresses me more and more every day. The handling is superb, traction control is better than my RAM 1500, and that 4 cylinder engine blows me away with it's quirkiness and power. Usually I'd never get a 4 cylinder. I was hesitant on getting the M40i instead but I'll say 100% the 4 cylinder will be more than good for 90% of people out there looking to get into an X3. I'm on the highway and don't even realize I'm pushing 140.
The cabin is so quiet and comfy too, and I've got the 21" wheels and standard suspension. I enjoy the ride better than my girl's mercedes GLC

Velar shares F-Pace platform. Both are not in the same class as Urus, X6, Cayenne, etc. (RR Sport fits here). BMW X4, GLC, Stelvio and Macan are about the same size as Velar/F-Pace.
Cayenne turbo s, with pdcc, ptv+ air suspension and everything else xD
I doubt the Urus would make it on this test but could have a different outcome though. Bring the Sequoia, Navigator, Escalade,Yukon Denali, Infinity QX56 and test them out off road

Back in 2019 I just drove all these things and ended up buying x3. This is really a well-designed SUV all the way around but I was impressed on its off-road performance. BMW has done a lot with the xDrive system over the years.
Sadly the Discovery Sport was not the latest version with Terrain Response 2 like the Evoque

for real, so happy seeing this review. All the BMW enthusiasts are chirping me for getting the 30i instead of the M40i and I'm honestly just so impressed with that 4 cylinder engine. Half the time I forget it's even a 4 cylinder, I'm doing 140km/h on the road and I don't even feel the speed picking up

rad to see this comparison, have taken my 2005 x3 offroad on some gnarly mud hills and was stoked on how well it did!
BMW X3 is a real deal either as an urban family car or as an adventurous off road car. I test drive one of them and it really left me in awe. Love it.

I was surprised by the Porsche, given the Cayenne did so well... I was wondering whether the Macan failed because it was the GTS version (made more for racing), and how a standard version would perform... Although, it probably would be the same.
It also surprised me, that the mid-sized models (Q5, Macan, etc) did worse than the flagship ones. (Q7, Cayenne) Thank you for the video, and keep up the good work!
The awd system in the macan is completely different than the cayanne. The macan system Essentially comes from the 911.
Thats strange what Q5 and Macan surprised you with bad results comparing to flaships, having in mind that besides the Quattro badge there is nothing similar in the all-wheel-drive systems between them.
@Ethan Pae i almost bought Macan, so I really like the vehicle. However the awd system is basically the one from yhe 911. It is tuned for on road stability and dynamicsm
The Macan may do well against AR Stelvio or Maserati Levante. I';m surprised by the F-Pace though, it's also a rival car and it had no problems climbing.

F Pace doesn’t have off road mode?? That’s odd both mine have it!! It’s not called off road but rain ice snow or Jaguar adaptive surface control on the new one. Absolutely brilliant car. Out of the 50 or so cars I’ve owned the F Pace is fabulous

The disco sport was interesting. I wonder if they have tuned the TCS and AWD for the refresh like the face lifted Evoque has. I thought they would have performed similarly it clearly that wasn't the case
Totally agree with you. This test was clearly showed the difference between LRDS & Evoque. What do you think about BMW performance in this test?
May be the Evoque is lighter. I'm unsure whether the Disco Sport had updated software and the Terrain Response, struggling so much when it's essentially a beefed up Evoque, it's weird.

Awesome realistic test. I am surprised by how the F-Pace preformed. But I'm not surprised how the Discovery Sport preformed. ( I'm a Landrover owner and fan, but in my opinion, it never deserved the Land Rover badge )

@@SUVBattle I would like to see the not so glossy 4x4 workhorses like the Volkswagen Amarok, Toyota Hi-Lux, Nissan Navara, Volkswagen transporter or Crafter 4x4, Iveco 4x4. Mercedes Vito and sprinter 4x4.
Or in general, the more heavy-duty utilitarian trucks and van's which are not used to bring the children to school in a glossy and save environment close to home :)
And what I also would like to see is a test with how these 4x4 going to deal with a decent payload or with a loaded trailer attached. People like me don't buy a 4x4 for fun or show but for a purpose and utility.

Can you please show the difference in the previous generation Q5 quattro and the latest Q5 quattro?
I think the permanent quattro is better than the new ultra quattro, thats why the Q8 perform better than the Q5

A well designed test, especially the X3 retest. Overall I am impressed with most of them; 4WD has come a long way. I am not surprised the Macan did not succeed - its not designed for that kind of off road driving, and its better suited to optimising grip on road at speed or "soft road" surfaces.
The paradoxical thing is that Volkswagens themselves did pretty good job on this climb. Tiguan, Touareg, Amarok were tested here, videos to come soon hopefully.

The Discovery Sport is the same platform as the Range Rover Evoque. The Disco is heavier but assuming the same electronics & differentials, the noticeable performance difference between the two indicates something else going on - tyres, incorrect terrain mode engaged or just bad driving.

And to answer to your question, the point is that the obstacle for X5 was more difficult than for X3. If the X5 covered the same track as the X3, it would have shown a good result.

Can you do a video comparing purpose built offroaders (Custom land cruiser, jeep wrangler, Suzuki Jimny)? To show people how a vehicle should perform.

Truth is not so many people care that much about them. If you are doing that kind of off-road, you would get a car build for that, it's obvious. Comparing them to most of the cars in the last videos (erm, SUVs) would be like putting the Wrangler, Jimny and Land Cruiser on a race track, or a twisty road, or even on the Autobahn doing 200+. They would be so out of their depth there that you can't compare it with the occasional light off-road the tested SUVs usually do. In my country we call the class "parquet lions" for a reason :)
@@NikolaiTsekov there are a lot of people who want to see custom done offroad vehicles but nobody is uploading those types of videos to youtube at watchable quality.
There is one dude in India who uploads that kind of stuff and he has around 500k subs with not so good video production skills. That guy uploads in Hindi language so his audience is limited to India.
If someone starts to do that in english, they can grow exponentially. This channel (SUV Battle) has great production quality and knowledge of vehicles so there is high probablity that this can grow.

If you speak Russian, you can find plenty of off-road battles, BTW. They do them a lot because.. idk, I doubt they really need to show off expensive SUVs doing it, but there are plenty of mobsters with nothing to do... :)
As for real offroaders, sure, if they manage to collect some at the same time. I guess every country has a dedicated form with people that would agree to help.

It’s complicated, the problem as well with Land Rover, they don’t maintain standards. The q5 is made in Mexico and is tbh seems cheap, the q7 i think Is still made in Ingolstadt and the Quattro system is far superior. I promise.
This Q5 doesn't have original quattro system based on torsen. Quattro Ultra is based on Haldex tracation like many other SUVs.

I am also surprised that the Evoques attemp was so much better than the Discoverys attemp.
Especially considering the evoque and disco sport have an IDENTICAL suspension geometry, engine, gearbox, and system and programming
The Evoque is lighter and shorter and the tyres are touching the ground better. All of this things are better for off-road. The Disco is different and should be drived differently, and for sure is not about traction system, is about weight, suspention and torque and a lot of things that are making the diffrence. They didn't tell us nothing about ESP, on or off. Great job BMW!
The Auto mode in Evoque would have picked Mud and Ruts mode. Which will be why it done better than the Discovery in Grass Gravel Snow mode. Most likely ESP was on, which is very bad for off roading in any 4x4.
@@kyleb5518 I would point out that the Disco Sport in the video shares the same platform with the last generation Evoque. The current generation Evoque in the video (2019 and after) rides on a new platform that has upgraded terrain response 2 system.
