I bought this camera on a whim 13 yrs ago. It’s my only digital slr. I bought the 1.8 lens. It has been all over the world with me. Captured my children growing up. Captured treasured life memories. I’m now going to buy a Panasonic GX85 for video. Thks for your great videos.
Does it produce film like images?
Nice video and unexpected at this late date. I bought my D-50 new in 2006: $575 w/18-55 kit lens. I had been a lifelong film shooter, darkroom and all and this was my first foray into digital. I just didn't enjoy digital the way I did film so after a year or so, the D-50 got packed away and I pretty much abandoned serious photography.
Flash forward to 2017 and a friend gave me his Nikon D5100 with a Tamron 18-200. This time, I got into digital, learned to edit and began having fun.
I dug out the old D-50, not expecting it to be functional but was pleasantly surprised when the battery took a charge and it fired right up. The sensor had a lot of mildew but was easily cleaned, surprisingly there was no mildew inside the lens.
I can't say why, but now, I actually enjoy shooting with the D50 more than the D5100. Maybe it's just the simplicity and the solid heft of it but as you pointed out, the colors are vivid and sharp and the image quality is amazing, even at just 6mp.
The D50 certainly would make a great starter camera for someone with only a little money to spend.
BTW, 2GB SD cards work more consistently if you format it in a computer using FAT-32. Formatting them in camera usually doesn't work.
Thanks again for posting this video highlighting this great camera.
Hey, Steven. This vid eventually prompted me to get another D50 and a newer VR kit lens (traded my old one back around 2009 for an M43 Panasonic). Yes, they're cheap. Yes, they're fun. And yes, focussing is quick. As you say, you can handhold down to stupidly slow shutter speeds. I'm also enjoying using some old manual AI lenses I had from film camera days. And I like the photos I'm taking as well. Thanks for doing these retrospective videos. Really a fun series. They're why I subbed. Keep up the good work.
Love your channel man. Just found it and instantly subscribed.
Thank you for the video and the praise for the D 50. I agree with you.
Have a silver one and the ccd sensor is awesome. It’s a beautiful piece and should be cherished in every way. 2 gig compact flash in mine.
Hey! What lens did you have on it for the example photos?
I got mine for 50 bucks and put on a f1.8G lens from my collection. The images are great. They have a soft/sharp look, if that makes sense. And has a really good colour style. The Camera feels good in the hand. No nonsense. And the images print real good. I wonder why I need to spend $1000 -$3000 for a modern camera, when this set-up produces great shots.... ?
great job! enjoyed your video
I have one of those ,already hit 40000 frames ,and still workindg..what i like is the color compared to my d7200 get warmer and nicer to me..is good old camera ..keep up with old good reviews
Hi All, Steve we have an extensive collection of cameras, one of the great features of the D50 is it has a built in screw drive for D TYPE lenses where the D40/40x and the D60 do not. Just picked up a D2Hs very happy to add this to the collection.
Definitely! I found that out the hard way back in 2009 when I bought a Nikon D5000 only to find that it didn’t have the built in focus motor so a handful of my older lenses were manual focus-only. Lol I bet the D2Hs is gonna be awesome! I love the look of Nikon cameras from that era.
Great video. Now I know what my camera not accepted SD XC. Thank you so much. Let’s see where I can find the SD Card first Generation.
Amazing.
Yeppers, that was my first dlsr and I still have it. Of course I bought it new at a camera store and paid full retail so it is a little sad to see its actual value, I had loaned it to someone because I had upgraded to the almighty d-7000 now worth $150? The good news is while the other person had it my house was robbed of all my lenses and gear so I have the body but no lens, since I made the brilliant switch to olympus🥴
Oh man, I’m sorry to hear that! And yeah, I feel the same way every week when I make these videos when I think of how much I paid versus how much they cost now. Lol
I have a D50 as well. Bought it new and never sold it. I have sd cards that i bought at that time and at a flea market. It also works with a 2GB SD card. Also the D90. The battery of the D90 works well with the D50.
You get sharp images at 1/15 handheld because the pixels are larger on a 6mp aps-c sensor. Notice how the D800 and later the D850 are notorious for microblur. The resolution is so fine, you see the small shakes! High-Res cameras require faster shutter speeds or IBIS.
I use it with a sigma 300-800 and a non original battery grip and the autofocus is quick and very accurate
D50 is still such a great camera. Older Nikon AF/AF-D lenses pair great with it. Non AF manual lenses also work really well with it too, if you use a hand held meter.
It was the first DSLR used in my family, and most of my childhood was captured through the D50 but eh: twenty years later I still insist on keeping it for it's vintage and still good for shooting. Now we get away with the D7500 that accomplishes far more but it's nice once in a while to go back to a simpler camera.
Film like images it produces?
Slapped a 500mb microsd with adapter on it and it worked!
you should mention abt the flash-sync shutter speed :1/500
I have a D 40 40X 50 70 80 90 3200 and a Z 50 and love them all.
Maybe a review of the canon 300d or the digital rebel would be nice..... amazing videos though 👍
Still got my D50, it lives in my camera bag with my D7000, and still gets regular use.
My D50 out shot my 24 megapixel D5300 on vacation. I'm sold on the CCD sensors. The 5300 has the CMOS sensor. Which give you the same look at most Nikon DLSR's . The D50 is only great in bright light tho because of its limited ISO range
How many cameras are built like a tank with beefy grips. Have both the Sony CCD ICX-453-AQ sensor and an autofocus motor? The answer is 2. The D50 and D70/70's Nikon put this specific sensor in 4 cameras. The D50 D40, D70, D70s. This is the classic CCD vs CMOS argument. There is a processing difference. Hasselblad still uses the CCD sensors today. Historically CCD's are less sensitive to noise and are more light sensitive. The CMOS are cheaper and require less power to operate. This explains how you can get sharp photos with just a 6 megapixel camera with a limited ISO range (less processor noise) There are some drawbacks. This camera requires great light to maximize it's potential. You have to feed this beast good light. Bright sunny days 👍. Overcast ☁️ daylight it falls back into the pack. My combo D50 with an older AF 50mm 1.8 D lens. That's money at the beach all day. Less is more with the 5 focal points. It nails the autofocus everytime. I tend to dial down my modern camera AF points anyways. It has a DX sensor so this 50mm is closer to a 75mm view. That makes it great for portraits too. Use the vintage lenses. This camera doesn't know what year it is. Take yourself back into the early 2000's. I never understood why someone would use a modern lens on a vintage camera? Just use a modern body if you're using modern lenses. What an opportunity to take pictures of your family now with 2005 gear and get a vintage feel. Embrace the time machine do now what they we're doing then.
Got mine in 2005, my daughter now uses it 🤓
Hi, everything he says is true, I bought 2 of these off eBay, $34 and $37 with low shutter counts. I have a D200 so could use the lens I have for that camera, the only problem you might have is stickiness on the camera grip, plenty of solutions for fixing this on UA-cam. Get one and enjoy it.
thanks amazing. could you recommend some lens of this?
what lens do you use and did you shoot raw or jpeg?
You should put amazon links to all the gear you shot each episode with.
I really do need to start doing that. I joined the Amazon Affiliate Program a while back but I always forget to use it. Oh by the way, this was filmed on a Canon 70d with the 17-55mm f2.8 lens. B-Roll was filmed with Panasonic GX85 with the 14mm f2.5 lens.
As long as you know how yo compse your shot this will be great . If you just shoot everything, ie: a palm tree and zoom in on the furthest palm franchise you're gonna have a problem with noise
Which cam u used to shoot video
which lens are you using?
When I use $130 bought d300s seller free d50 to me in 2022
Dang I see you have 6.66k followers 😢
It's a great camera for someone like me who's trying to learn about photography. It with a sticker price of $42 for the camera and the lens, it's also great for someone like me who wants to keep his marriage intact... 😂
I have a 3400 and need a side cam for an emergency shot, should I get it?
Hi, if all you need is photos then yes, the D50 is definitely worth considering at $30. All buttons and menus should be relatively familiar, though admittedly a bit dated.
Steven Heise I’m gonna sell my old point and shoot and a few other things and buy one, pretty cheep and the picture quality looks decent for what I’m doing
which dollar use US dollar or American dollar
US is the United States of America so they’re the same dollar
That's weird.. my D40X takes my SDSC with no problems at all
Yeah, the D40X is two years newer plus it has upgrades like a 10 megapixel sensor whereas the D50 only has a 6.1 megapixel sensor. The nomenclature is a bit confusing since the “40” in the “D40X” makes it sound older than the D50. Lol
Do a D300S....
Everthing is low in USA 🤷🏾♂️
Bro i nied thaisa camara bro
