This is great to hear. I inherited a D50 from my uncle when he passed and it came with a strobe flash, lenses, all the great stuff that I would not be able to afford for ages right now if not for this.
The D50 has a Sony CCD ICX-453-AQ sensor and autofocus motor. This sensor was only used in the D50, D40, D70 and D70s. The D50 is the only model with this specific sensor batch and AF motor. 5 points AF works fast and nails the autofocus everytime. CCD vs CMOS? you decide. Hasselblad still uses CCD sensors. Let that sink in.
D50 has been my main camera since I purchased it back in the aughts. I bought it to upgrade from my N65 setup to digital it’s worked great for just about everything I’ve needed it for (events, light painting, birds, landscapes, etc.). I do have a speed flash, remote, and a few different lenses. As a long term amateur, I feel it’s time for an upgrade. Personally, using the SD card (low capacity) is becoming burdensome, especially with Bluetooth/wireless connectivity available now.
I still shoot with a N65. And occasionally shoot with my D50. Both are great cameras. I love the small 6MP raw files from the D50, which you can easily transfer to a phone with a SD card adapter. I also have nice full frame cameras. But I really wouldn’t be at a loss if I only used my D50 for digital photos.
My D50 is one camera I would hang on to above all others, it takes superb photos. Don't get caught with the 6.1 mega pixel believe me when you see the results you wont believe it's just 6mp, the colours are just right it's so easy to use and the internal motor is a bonus. I have a D800 with 36mp but for normal sized photos I think the D50 has a better straight out of the camera photo, the more mega pixels you have the better your lenses have to be. If you see a cheap one in good working condition it's a bargain of a lifetime.
Yes, I currently have a Nikon d50 and I find it difficult to take pictures indoors with it. I usually do nature and landscape photography anyway so it's perfect for that.
I was in Hawaii with my Nikon D 50 and I was able to take some very nice photos that I took at Volcanoes National Park. Looking at the floor of a deflated Halemaumau Crater I was able to get details that were very nice. I also was able to capture the inside of Thurston Lava Tube.
Hi Nick Good video! The D50 had some good and not so good features. The focusing motor was one reason I purchased it. But the small monitor turned me off. I'm glad it found a good home!! Best wishes Duane
You would not last long in the film era. IMHO you shouldn't be using your monitor much anyways. I snap a shot and look at my exposure real quick all I want to know is if its too light or dark. Then I keep shooting. I might pause after a cluster of shots just to quickly acroll to make sure my auto focus is on point. even with todays modern cameras. I don't use the screen much when I'm taking photos.
Have you ever shot a Nikon D100? Also 6.1 MP with a CCD sensor. I know you enjoy the Nikon D50, would love to see you do a comparison between the two. I have a Nikon D100 and enjoy using it for street photography. Great content, liked and subscribed.
I still have my trusty N50 along with a telephoto and macro lense plus the one it came with. Next year I will be taking my trip of a lifetime to Antarctica and wonder if this setup is going to be adequate. On the one hand, I'm already spending so much on the trip I don't want to fork over more money for a new camera, but on the other hand I'm spending so much money on this trip I don't want to be disappointed with my pictures, either. What's your advice?
Oh that's such a hard one! The d50 is a fantastic camera, personally I would get a d3*** or d5*** series as a backup just in case. Your lenses sound perfect though
Thank you for the very good review , I'm just a little confused insofar as all my Nikon D50's will only accept a 2GB SD card , .they will not accept a 4GB sd card , I have X 4 , D50's , I have converted 3 of them to full spectrum photography . I had foolishly purchased X 2, 4GB cards on Ebay , however they where cheap & I guess I can use the cards for other purposes .
@@PinkhatPhotography thank you! Do you have online consultations.. I have a few listing’s scheduled for next week. I will be using this camera kind of nervous. I also have the iPhone 14 pro max
Nice video. 😁 Please can I ask a question. Just been given a Nikon D50 with 3 lenses. I need a SD card upto 2Gb to store photos BUT does the shutter work ( to test camera is okay ) and make a noise without a card inside ? The display says -E- which according to the user guide means NO CARD. Any help would be very appreciated. Thank you, David.
-E- means no readable card. Try a 1GB then a 2GB. BTW you can pick these up dirt cheap because people think its broken because of the -E- code. I got a D100 for $20 all I did was put a card in it. Another guy sold me a D5000 like new with less than 4k click for $25 for the same reason. He thought it was broken for parts only.
I have a chance to get one in almost new condition and listed as a camera in a box. It looks like a complete package that Nikon offered that's a whole bunch of small boxes in a big box and comes with an extra tameron lense that looks like it may be a zoom. All for $150.00 and I'm wondering if you think it's worth it?
@@PinkhatPhotography yes it comes with the original lense which they said is a wide angle and a zoom. Also checked out a Samsung a10 I think is the model which seemed to have good reviews for the time. Both on FB marketplace.
@@PinkhatPhotography Thanks, I was going to buy the D70 or D50 but I found a great deal on the Sony A100 + Minolta AF 75-300mm lens. Got them plus all the accessories needed for 130 euros. Can't wait for the rest to arrive, only the lens arrived as of a few hours ago.
The D80 I would put in the same boat as the 7000 series Nikons a prosumer camera, where as the D50 is a consumer grade camera, It might have been difficult since I didn't say grade in the video but that is what I meant. The D50 was 799 when released where as the D80 cost about a grand on release a year later

Sorry for your loss, but happy shooting!!
2022 and I STILL Love my Nikon D50 that I told you about when we spoke! For the price its a LOT of Camera! Clean images and true colors for its time!
Oh absolutely! Such a fantastic camera, one of the few cameras I'd never let go of!

There are still a ton out there too! I still love my d50!
100% agree. I own two. Needed a back up.

Yeah it is not great in low light
It works only with 2 GB SD-cards maximum
that is what I have run into too

The d50 is such an amazing camera!!!
Those early Nikon had a CCD sensor who gives superb colors rendition
Right??? They are amazing!!!!

What camera do you recommend that can take videos and pictures, and is great for portrait and landscape images? Budget is around $200. Thanks !
I heard someone say a nikon d300 was around 200
I like the d5300 at that price point personally

My luck with the d50 has been with 2gb cards as well.
Bravo 👏
Thank you!
Would this camera be good for real estate photography
I've used it for real estate, it's not great in lower light, so you would want lights
Just got offered this camera for 80$

Not a terrible price!
You lost me when you said "I upgraded to SONY"
Lol at this point I shoot Nikon, Sony, Fuji and canon. The Sony was a huge improvement on my d5300, but I love them all lol

Lol tbh I think I was experimenting with this series and ended up never attempting it again

For 225$ you can almost get a used gx80 lol
