    just to compliment about the learning songs and imrpov parts there are two important things.
    1) when learning a song active analyse it, where are the licks (which scale shapes they are using, in which tonality) this will help you expand your vocabulary for improv and composition. Also try to see if you can do this riffs/licks another way. And why these notes are there.
    2) play along with tracks, and mainly study/jam tracks for your scale study this is both good to help your improv, your rythmn and your movement on the scales

    I like the structure here. For someone picking up a guitar that has learnes basic open chords, bar chords and to play some songs but gets totally lost watching someone riff or solo do you suggest mastering scales and tying them to chords? Is there a structured way you lay out how to practice that in your course for beginners (or players that haven't looked into theory or really advanced past beginner)?

    • @Simenotnes
      @Simenotnes  2 місяці тому +1

      Good question. First I would learn the minor pentatonic scale around the neck. This is a great place to start and it's an incredible foundation. Then I would try to really understand the major scale. The major scale is the absolute most essential thing to understand, cause basically everything is built on that. So if you don't understand the major scale, theory will be really hard. But if you understand it, everything else will make more sense.
      On playwithaplan.com, I'm currently making a course on the major scale because it's so essential. When that's finished, I'm planning to create a structured path on how I recommend learning guitar 😊
      Back to your first question, really nailing the minor pentatonic scale is what I would look at to get comfortable with soloing. Understanding the relationship between scales and chords is also helpful. Hard to answer everything in a comment, but hope that is somewhat useful😊

    Thank you for the content! Very useful. I took a big page of notes :) This is what I'm missing: a plan - a roadmap of the journey.
    So now my question is: how do you know when you have mastered one step and can move to the next one? How would you approach that? Let's say I'm working on the first position of the pentatonic scale. When can I move to the 4 other positions? Thank you!

    • @Simenotnes
      @Simenotnes  2 місяці тому

      So happy to hear that, thanks for the comment! And that's a really damn good question. I actually think I have to reflect upon this to give a better answer, but I can tell what came to mind right now. If you feel like you understand step 1, I wouldn't really wait to long to go on to the next step. What I find is that as long as I feel like I understand it, then it's more about getting the reps in to be able to for example use it in a musical setting. And while you go to the next steps, you should still work on step 1 from time to time. So I guess it's not necessarily a linear step-by-step path. I still practice the pentatonic shapes a lot even though I know them in and out.
      If I feel like I don't understand the step yet, then I would probably spend some more time on it before moving on. On your example with the pentatonic shapes, I would move quite quickly as long you understand the shapes.
      So that's my answer right now, might change slightly😅 but hope it gave some clarity!

    • @Simenotnes

      I'd say learning the notes on the two lowest strings is especially useful. From those two strings, you can really figure out all the other notes by finding the octaves to those strings. Good question! And both approaches you suggest can work just fine! I've personally have months where I've heavily obsessed with one thing only. But for maximum results I highly recommend doing some technique every practice day (even if it's only five minutes). It's just so important for everything on guitar and since it relies so much on muscle memory, you'll get better results if you do it often. But for example ear training isn't as important to practice every day (unless this is your priority), cause it doesn't rely on muscle memory.
      I also wanna mention that if you're a beginner, you would have less main skills to focus on at first. Then you would gradually start to introduce more main skills. I'm working on a video similar to this where I talk about what to learn on guitar in order 😊

    As someone who wants to jam and improvise, is it necessary to memorize which chords are in every key? Would it help to understand the Circle of Fifths, or do I just need to sit down and memorize since I’ll need to remember things on the fly?

    • @Simenotnes
      @Simenotnes  2 місяці тому

      I think there's different levels to how advanced you want to make it. The simplest way to do it is to play the scale that belongs to the key. For example, if the songs is in A minor, you could improvise in A minor over the whole song and be fine. One step further would be to target some of the chords you're playing over (I'm actually posting a video about this tomorrow that explains it better than I'm able to do with just words 😊). Not sure if I understood your question correctly or not, but hope that gave some clarity.
      Instead of memorizing every chord in every key, I think it's much more helpful to understand the numbers system in the major scale (I talk about that in this video: ua-cam.com/video/C1WqeTEr32E/v-deo.html&ab_channel=SimenOtnes ). Personally, I have only used to circle of fifths to understand sheet music (useful for finding out which notes have a # or b in different keys), but I've never really used it for any guitar related😊

      @@averyfindsen3948 One simple way to do it is to first decide on a key. If you decide on for example C major, then you can play all the chords that belong to C major and it will work together. That's exactly what I talk about in the video I linked above. Another good way is to play a 12-bar blues! This is in my opinion one of the easiest way to get get started with jamming and it's very often that musicians play a 12-bar blues if they are having a jam.

    • @Simenotnes
      @Simenotnes  2 місяці тому +3

      Good question! With two hours daily, I would probably lean towards doing at least a few different main skills. Personally, I've never been a fan of doing everyone every day cause I feel like I don't get enough time to get really focused. BUT I really recommend doing at least some technique everyday, cause this is really the foundation for being able to play at all.
      The second thing is that it depends on what your focus areas are at the time. If you're for example trying to learn some new arpeggio shapes, then it would be nice for the muscle memory to practice it as often as possible. But something like aural skills/ear training wouldn't be 'as important' (unless this is your top priority) to do everyday cause it doesn't rely on muscle memory.
      That's also why I recommend doing technique daily, cause this is so much muscle memory. Kind of hard to answer in one comment, cause it depends on multiple factors, but hope this made at least some sense 😊

    • @Simenotnes

      They can all work perfectly fine. The point I tried to make is that you need to get the information from somewhere, cause you don't know what you don't know. Where you get the information can be many different places, but it's important to find good resources. If you have a bad guitar teacher for example, it won't really be very effective.

    • @Simenotnes
      @Simenotnes  2 місяці тому +1

      Good question. Some reasons they're useful (on the top of my head):
      - Better understanding of the guitar, especially chords and scales (arpeggios are basically chords played one note a time)
      - If you're improvising, you'll want to know the notes of the chord you're playing over (so you can target those notes)
      - Personally, I think mainly in arpeggios rather than scales when I'm improvising. I think it's easier to play fluently across the neck and play more musical phrases, when thinking in arpeggios.
      How important arpeggios are depends on what kind of guitar playing you're into. If you're for example playing jazz, then arpeggios is gonna be a really important part of your playing. But for someone who's just learning songs for fun (and are not really interested in improvising or understanding the guitar), it's not gonna be as important as it is in jazz.
      Hope this made some sense!
