Have a Mercury 40 two stroke it had cooling problems and I cooked it. Have since replaced pistons and rings now it starts OK but won't rev out past about 1500 revs. Any idea what I've done wrong?
May be a dumb question but I just purchased 2005 mercury 40hp 2 stroke. Runs very well but have trouble at times getting it to start and continue running. Tried several different choking and throttling sequences to try and figure out the motors "nack". Many times it will turn over fire then shuts right off after firing. I have figured out that if I cover up two of the three carberator intakes it fires right up and runs well. Does the mean the choke isn't working at all? I figured it was something minor being the motor runs so well once it does get warmed up.

hi mate!!I have same model but 30 hp!!! They say by puting 40 hp carb on my 30 will make it like a 40 hp?!
That's possible because you can turn a 3.5 hp to 5 hp by upgrading the carb
My motor isn't starting only cranking, changed new plugs but not starting pls advise ASAP
check for spark first ,then any loose wires ,and possible coil

yes does sound like choke mine is electronic off the key

Maybe floats stuck in the carbs
Clean carbs and you'll be amazed at how much better it runs
I would remove the oil injection I toasted a motor with that
How big is your boat? I have 17ft bayliner want to put in 40hp in it
14.5 feet/ 17 bayliner 70 hp no problem
