I about cried after watching your video. Just bought a 01 150hp evinrude thats been sittn since 05. Got 30 hours on it. I cleaned the boat, turned the flywheel by hand. Put a batt in it and with the fuel disconnected, i turned over the engine not realizing the rings could be seized up. Praying i didnt do damage! Great video! Wish i watched it sooner😢
Great information Jeff that will help anyone. I done the same thing with the Mercury motor that was on my pontoon. I used Pb blaster in the cylinders. Thanks for sharing this great information.🇺🇸
I recently picked up a 10 ft Livingston that has a 1981 9.9 Evinrude. It hasn't been used for 14 years and was stored outside under tarps. Before I attempted to start it, I removed the plugs and sprayed penetrating oil into the cylinders. The next day, I slowly turned the flywheel. It turned freely, and I didn't feel any grinding sensation or sticking. Before I tested the compression, I turned it over by hand some and oiled the cylinders again. It has 90-92 psi in each cylinder, so I tried starting it. It didn't start. I've determined that the fuel pump is bad, and it's got a cork float in the carburetor. The float doesn't float anymore, so now it's a sink.😂 I ordered a Carburetor rebuild kit that comes with a plastic float and a fuel pump rebuild kit.Right now, I have the carburetor soaking in white gas camping fuel. I would've liked to use the big can of Berryman's, but evidently, we can't buy that here in the big metal can anymore. I'm hoping to have it running in a few days. I also cleaned up all the ground wires and applied dielectric grease. Spark is strong. After I get it up and running, I'll replace the water pump and thermostat. That looks pretty easy except for the lower bolt on the thermostat housing/plate. Idk how that's gonna come out. There's gotta be a trick that I'm not aware of? Otherwise, it looks like the whole power head has to come off, just to replace the thermostat. Does it have to come off?

3 weeks ago, a 1972 Ebbtide Lakemaster 15' Open Bow "Ski Boat", 1972 Mercury 500e OB and EZ Loader Trailer followed me HOME. This is my First Boat, and I am a 72 yo Auto (AMC/JEEP/RENAULT) & Motorcycle (H-D/Kawasaki/Honda) Dealship Mechanic, GM & finally Owner. I have saved 1,000's a Cars/Trucks, Heavy Trucks and Motorcycles from Harley M50 to Kawasaki KZ1300 Six Turbo. Is this an adjustment issue on the cables or could it be in the linkage or the carb??? Thanks brother and keep up the great work
Do you do the same thing for an engine that’s locked up? Considering buying a Johnson GT 150 from someone for my older Ranger, the owner said that the engine is locked up.
It probably won’t do much good but you never know. If it’s just a stuck ring it might. Most times if it’s truly locked up the rust has eat into the cylinder enough that it will need to be honed to get a good life out of it.
I'm fixing to be bringing back one that's been sitting for 6 years. 50hp mercury 2 stroke. Any other pointers or stuff that I should check before actually trying to fire it up? I'm so thankful I stumbled upon this video!

A guy gave me a 1978 Evinrude 35hp. He said it ran great, but the top crank seal was leaking and fouled out the electronics once running. He said he was told that it had a split block and the block had to be taken apart to replace the seal. I thought that was nonsense, but I took the motor to see what I could do with it. It had been sitting up about 7 years. It didn't appear to be seized. I put some motor oil in the two cylinders and spun it around by hand a few days periodically. I felt with my finger some compression coming from both cylinders, but it seemed weak. I dug the old seal out with a screwdriver being careful not to scratch the crankshaft and tapped in a new one. I borrowed a compression tester from AutoZone. Both cylinders showed about 32 to 35 lbs. So, do you think once this motor is running the rings will reseat so I get higher compression, or do you think this motor is shot? I knew this guy well so I doubt he would have told me that it ran great if it didn't. I know it will not run great on 35 pounds of compression.
I know you lost this video series but would you be able to list the other things you did. I have a motor that has been setting 15+years and would like to do all i can to not ruin it. Thanks.

On that boat I really haven’t heard any horror stories. Good solid hulls. That short a time I would just throw some good fuel stabilizer in it add fresh gas and do a abbreviated break in. You know half throttle for a little while then step all the way to full. Good luck with the new boat and thanks for watching and commenting
If there is bad gas in the bowls of the carbs should I remove the drain bolts first and flush out the carbs with fresh gas before working the cylinders free?

I see two failts: 1, you now have demolished the impeller. Always put water on the tail end before tuning the engine. 2, you are assuming the you tuned the motor over 180 deg. by turning the prop 180 deg. But you forgot the reduction in de tail end

Once I knew the motor was good I’d do a full service. Top to bottom and start new. Good luck
@@bowl830 it is a Johnson J40ELESR that has two tanks, one for fuel one for oil. It looks like new but am concerned of how it is in the inside. Anything I should be concerned with about that model that you know of. Thanks again for being so helpful.
Can you spray it with carb cleaner?
Carb cleaner is ok for just cleaning a surface. It dries so quickly it don’t break it down. A good penetrating oil soaks in breaks down the rust and carbon. Sea foam is about the best I’ve used but WD40 does a great job as well. I appreciate you watching and commenting thank you
New subscriber here! Looking forward to part 2!
Awesome. Thanks for the sub. I appreciate it.
same procedure can be used for 2 stroke lawn equipment that has been sitting for years
Alright Jeff great video I will be looking foreword to the next part
I see two failts:
1, you now have demolished the impeller. Always put water on the tail end before tuning the engine.
2, you are assuming the you tuned the motor over 180 deg. by turning the prop 180 deg. But you forgot the reduction in de tail end
Reply ?
Great video and great information my friend.
Thanks, great info!
Thank you again for a great video.
Hi Jeff…great video !!!!….I have inherited a 2005 150 hp Mercury two stroke…Haines Signature 575f….been sitting out in east coast Australian seaside for 6 years…
Can you or your subscribers Point me in direction of step by step checks from start …to check if it’s worth putting $$$$ getting it sea worthy…sentimental attachment.
Thank you in advance 🧜🏼♀🧜🏼♀🧜🏼♀
Thanks for the kind words. Best thing to do is compression check. And open the lower drain plug in the lower unit. If compression is good and equal.and the lower unit isn’t full of water and locked up it’s probably a good motor or at least a good motor to put money in.
Again thanks for watching and commenting, I appreciate it
Thanks so much for the advice…just subscribed to follow your other videos..will find out where to buy the cans of “gunk” to spray into cylinders as well. Much appreciated. Will let you know how it goes …” cheers mate “ Aussie.
How do I find the follow up videos for saving this motor?
Thanks for watching. I’m sorry to say I lost 4 videos due to a computer issue and didn’t get them loaded to UA-cam. But on a good note the motor is still running like brand new.
when replacing upper shift linkage 1973 merc how do you remove upper shift mechanism that has 1in gear on end
You should show the hole boat project
That is kind of the plan. But with time short. I’m gonna do stages. Motor. Trailer. Then boat. Thanks for watching and commenting I appreciate it.
Great information.
Wow.... thanks men...
This is another great video. Did you edit this and add music and slo-mo or did Michael do this one? 😆😂🤣🤣. Seriously, great video and information!!
I’m getting better. It’s a process lol
Thanks buddy
So glad I found your video. Thank you!
Thank you. I appreciate you taking time to watch and comment
Is the boat named Christine
Haha.
Hey I can't find part two, dd it ever get made?
Sorry I had a hard drive crash and lost about a dozen videos. The motor is still running great. Thanks for watching and commenting I appreciate it
No part 2?
I was looking forward to Part II, too. You are a great communicator!
Thank you. I hate I lost those videos. I’m about to start on another project this fall. Thanks for watching and commenting I appreciate it
Thanks
Thank you sir. You are the first person to ever do that. I didn’t know it was a thing lol. I do appreciate you watching and commenting. It does mean a lot.
Time is a good thing to save... haha
About to buy some Seafoam my friend
what if my prop spin very easily like wind spins it
Sounds like the seals may be worn. They usually grip the prop shaft just enough to create drag. I’d check the lower unit oil level. If the levels are good it’s nothing to worry about. Just keep an eye on it. Thanks for watching and taking time to comment
Toons! Business in the back, party in the front!
Lol. Facts
That seafoam is ok on a older 2 stroke?
Oh yea. It’s great for knocking the carbon out of motor. After you use it. It will look like tar running out of lower unit.
@@bowl830 Do you do that buy spraying it inside the plugs like you did or put a can in your gas tank?
I fog the cylinders through plug holes
@@bowl830 q
Seafoam fixes everything!
Pitted bearing rollers need relacement
I have a 1978 Even rude..same thing
DON'T turn that bloody propeller backwards, if that motor was really sitting for that long you WILL damage the water pump impeller. Use the correct sized socket and Tee handle on the flywheel nut, if you must do this.
Bearing rust
I am not able to get the hood off? I am like why is it sticking? Maybe I will spray it with WD-40
I found the good lever Sir!!!
Lol been there. I spent 30 minutes trying to find the lock to open a old mercury once. It wasn’t locked just stuck 😂
Apple tree in the background
Alright alright alright
I want that boat lol
You don’t want to know what I gave for it. Lol
It's the power head rollers that rust.
that boats cursed lol
😂
You bought a cursed boat!? jk
That’s a jinxed boat……sell it.
lol
taking too much time . if it turns over gas it and send it !
Yea that will work too. Got a little while anyway. Lol 😂
excellent until you mentioned that sea foam shite
lol I’ve heard that before. I’ve never had a problem with Sea foam /deep creep. I only use it for stuff like that where I need to break down carbon or rust. Thanks for watching and commenting I appreciate it
