Fun fact: There are no Level 5 and Level 7 LIGHT Insect monsters in the game.
Just play "Dark Magician" with "DNA Surgery" and "DNA Transplant". ;)

Another possible example: calling Chemicritter Carbo Crab an “elusive Fire Aqua monster” as we now get an archetype exclusively made of Fire attribute Aqua monsters in the form of Suships.

3 archtypes that went straight to duel links.
I think that somehow chemicritters is incomplete but so far the rest are very much alive in DL but aside from Triaminds the rest didn't have any competitive success as a rogue deck.

I'll give Triamids some credit. They certainly flip in and out of the Rogue Tier. You quickly lose count of the "KOG Rank with Triamids" posts on reddit.

I think a big way that would have helped Gemini, was that they are constantly treated as normal monsters even in the deck, that way they can work with cards like unexpected dai
That's a good idea actually. The strategy could be to use the (broken) normal monster support to get your plays started, then double summon for whichever specific monster effect you need at the moment. It would be like playing two different decks at the same time. Definitely would go a long way into making gemini not only playable, but also to stand out as unique.

You mean broken for several formats due to putting monsters that can swap between being immune to being destroyed and able to fuck the rampant amounts of battle traps, while having plenty of consistency and quickplay spot removal. Then yes, they are good.

Digital bugs + stumbling = decent turn 1 swarming if you have the proper hand. I made and gave that deck away, wanting to make it again

Chemicritters make me so sad because I absolutely LOVE the theming of the atoms Ionizing to form bigger, more complex and powerful compounds but making them Gemini's might have been the worst way to go about it

I honestly think if they were wind then wind would've been a lot better and not so trash. speaking of hatred and wind the fact that konami decided to let every harpie monster be a freaking tuner for the synchro instead of just making a dedicated tuner is beyond me and incredibly dumb. no archtype needs a compulse every single turn for free people especially on a literally overpowered xyz with synchro face on it. you literally always summon it with two level 4s, it would've been better and more balanced as an xyz monster not a damn synchro.

Actually it would have been better as a Contact/Tag Fusion monster instead. The reason being a lot of the new Harpie stuff requires you to have a High level Harpie. Which was not good due to the lack of good high level Harpies up till now with Slash and later the Harpie's Pet Dragon retrain.

@@ColetheFlame01 As of recently a lot of the better new spells and support has bonus effects of you control a level 5 or higher Harpie.
That stuff was released before Cyber Slash Harpie Lady was printed. And was a failed attempt to make Sisters and Pet Dragon useful.
Also the effect is fine. It's a hard once per turn.
I really wish Methydraco had the Superalloy Beast Raptinus effect of giving all your gemini monsters their gemini effects. It wouldn't make the deck good but it would make it a lot more worthwhile to summon.

I like to describe Chemicritters as the blatantly nerfed version of the concept.
You know, as though Bonding H2O wasn't a hard enough card to summon as it is.
They even have their own Level 8 WATER Dragon with a GX-era mechanic!
I always wondered why Bastion's "Bonding" Deck didn't have the boss monsters as Fusion Monsters. Instead it was made into a bricky NOMI monster for the main deck. You'd think it being GX and the idea of FUSING elements together to get compounds would be a no brainer but clearly Konami shows a negative intelligence in creating cards.

I really wish Gemini monsters were treated as normal monsters in the deck too. It'd make them way more interesting since they would have even stronger synergy with normal monster support.
UGH. Ever since seeing that Chemicritters were a thing, on top of the GX chemistry cards Bastion used, I really really wanted a biology themed archetype that incorporated older cards like DNA Surgery, virus cards, etc with new support
And seeing an awesome spell name like Dimer Synthesis wasted on something mediocre just hurts me deeply
The saddest thing about these three is that all of them have incredible aesthetics.

Well, Gravekeepers have been pretty great over the years, and... Hieratics were pretty okay? Nephthys has had its moments? I guess a lot of early good zombie support is Egyptian-themed? Oh, and Ra Sphere Mode is a good card from an Egyptian-themed archetype? Horus, Sphinxes, and Dark Scorpions, uh... they exist! Yeah.

@@clayxros576 If it was a Touhou gacha, it wasn’t official. Remember that Touhou is copyleft and Zun is unaffiliated with any fan works. The armpit thing really is just fandom degeneracy, there’s no attention brought to it in Zun’s works.
Think of it like how people lose their minds with characters like Corrin or Ramlethal that don’t wear shoes- a relatively innocuous detail that gets run into the ground by fetishists.
I feel like you could easily revitalize the Gemini mechanic by simply restructuring the mechanic so that Gemini’s aren’t normal monsters in their base state. Just make them good effect monsters that get even better on re-normal summoning them that actively gives you great card advantage for the commitment
Or, you could make them normal monsters while in your hand and deck, so that they can also rely on all the non-effect support that exists like Unexpected Dai...

They’re nowhere near good enough in their base state to warrant playing, and even giving them support like we’re talking about probably wouldn’t make them anywhere near busted
Triamids only received love because of Duel Links, Digital Bug was used for a week and then it fell into obscurity and the less we talk about Chemicritters the better.
That's what I like about Duel Links, it gives decks that spotlight they never got in the tcg, Toons? An actual top tier deck way back, Amazoness, Triamids, Witchcrafters? One of the best control decks at certain metas, Fur Hires? Literal tier 0 deck during its release
But then Duel Links decides to release Dark Scorpions support in the middle of the Zexal era. That should've been released in GX at latest.

I actually played chemicritter for some time non competitively. It would brick sometimes if I didn’t get Catalyst field or Supervise, but when I got what I needed it was honestly kinda fun
Also, not that it matters, but I found that it’s better to use Blazewing butterfly over hydron hawk

I feel like i should inform everyone that, as of writing this comment, Beetroopers are an archetype with extra deck instect monsters worth summoning and Kwagar Hercules is the most expansive insect card in their deck at 100-200$ each because it's an extender with a new Instant fusion-esque spell.
Dude, you're like a Cassandra that everyone loves but nobody takes seriously until ...well, you know.
To go into more detail on this, Ready Fusion is an Instant Fusion variant that can can only summon Level 6 or lower monsters with no effect.
Kwagar Hercules is the only Insect Fusion monster that meets these conditions (actually, it's the only Insect Fusion monster period) so decks that really want insect materials are using it as a tech play.
Because the card is so old and so bad, copies are hard to come by, so Kwagar Hercules is currently marketing for $100 a pop.
What a fucking time to be alive.

My favorite thing about Gemini support is how so much of it is just them trying to ignore the entire gimmick of Gemini and just let you treat them like normal effect monsters. How hysterical is it that an entire class of card revolves around people trying to circumvent their gimmick as often as possible.
It's the unfortunate side effect of a game that has sped up to the point of making the initial gimmick entirely pointless. Back in the day, I could see the point of monsters like Gigaplant being kind of "keystone" monsters that enable you to play much faster at the cost of taking time and resources to summon them. But now... they just don't fit in the kind of game YGO is. Either they make an archetype of geminis loaded with floodgates that slow your opponent down to their level, or you have to basically make them regular pringles in all but name.
The year is 2034. All Gemini monsters share an effect of “you can reveal this card in the hand to play 1 catalyst field from the deck, graveyard, banish zone. This can’t be negated.” And the best part? You don’t have to double summon to get this effect
This might be too little too late, but I thought of a way they could've made Chemicritters good. Basically, my idea is, if we're forced to normal summon our monsters multiple times, then reward us for each and every time we normal summon.
Tribute summoning is an inherently flawed mechanic that got outdated as soon as we were given the option to do anything else, but because it's so awful, that gave Konami the freedom to make some of the most unbalanced cards in history to support them. Monarch, True Draco, and Flundareez are all archetypes that work tribute summoning into their game plan and give you massive benefits for doing so, and even though people hated how suffocating those decks could be, there's no denying that they were inherently balanced by their restrictive mechanic. So, why couldn't Konami do the same with Gemini?
Give Chemicritters backrow that give us card advantage or interaction each time we normal summon Gemini Monsters. If the Gemini mechanic is the worst thing about the deck, then make the focus around rewarding us at every step of the process. After the Chemicritters have been normal summoned twice, use their effects to get more Chemicritters so we can continue to process, and for that matter give us a Chemicritter that searches backrow. This way, rather than rushing to normal summon twice so we can ignore the Gemini mechanic, we would be rushing to normal summon as many times as possible to keep the chemical chain reaction going.
It gives us a clear win condition once we have enough XYZ material, it would be a lot more fun to play, it works the Gemini mechanic organically into the strategy, and most of all it still wouldn't be broken. This strategy would still have massive problems with disruption, and the Gemini mechanic would still be flawed no matter how many rewards we get for it. However, at least our opponents would have an incentive to stop us quickly before our engine becomes a snowball rolling downhill.

I missed you so much, Rata. And I guess I'll say so as a DL player, that Digital Bugs is actually one of two XYZ decks that I play.
The other is Bujin.
My dream world has Konami pumping out tons of support for old random archetypes, making lots of them actually relevant, and resulting in a meta where there's legitimately a massive number of relevant and playable decks. Like, just give us a couple sets exclusively full of giving like 5~10 cards apiece to old random archetypes like the ones here or that were on the good old legacy of the worthless - I want to see Chemicritters vs Aromages and Earthbound Immortals vs Cyberdark as the semifinals in a tournament one day. And now A Digital Bug card is part of a Tier 0 deck, and had to be semi limited.
And for the usual "they were good in Duel Links", Triamids were a surprisingly decent rogue deck in an environment where 4000LP made Dancer and the Field Spell's boosts relevant with Hunter and Master's acceptable attack, Hunter's double summon was a good playmaker, one of the best counterplays/floodgates was Paleozoic Canadia which worked with Master's pop effect, and smaller deck sizes meant that running 2-3 copies of all the cards plus a couple support cards actually filled out a deck on its own.
Add in the Balance skill to guarantee a Monster, Field Spell and Trap Card in the opening hand, and the deck functioned quite well, even in the complete absence of their boss monster, which people may not have even run if it was there? Haven't played in years, so I only know what I remember.
They have Sphinx now, and I run it with Dino DNA as a skill to avoid absolute decimation at the hands of the Blue Eyes armageddon
Honestly, if you ask me, the only way to fix the Gemini Mechanic is by going with the White Spirit Dragon route. Always has access to its effects while also benefiting from the normal monster support while in grave. Make it so it says "This card is always treated as a normal monster" and BAM!!! That's why Geminis should be. Fuck the double normal summon need.

Rata, I'm posting from the future, you were right, they made the Field Spell fusion card, but it wasn't for Triamid, it was for Ursarctics and Drytrons, URSARCTICS AND DRYTRONS!
