@ULGROTHA You're right, but we have proof. Yusei is 18 when he gets checked into prison. He's later 19 when Illiaster looks up his information, so a year has passed between seasons. There are a lot of signs in neo domino city that say "2021", most notably one of the WRGP logos, meaning the arc takes place in 2021. He's timeline placement is fuzzier. It could take place immediately after dm, (which begins in the mid-90's and lasts for 3-4 years) or at the very latest, 2010. If it's 2010, we still have time for the reactor to blow. The biggest link is Trudge, who was a year or two older than Yugi in DM and is still fairly young on 5ds. It makes sense that about 20 years have passed.
@@babysinclairfan 2021 is likely a mistake. GX takes place from 2004ish to 2007ish and the Zero Reverse would have to happen around 2002 judging from Yusei's age, this contradicts Domino City being present in 2005. Also, there is no way technology developed that fast and Ushio could easily just be a decedent. It's more logical to assume that it takes place in 2059 or later, there was a date given in the Polar God Duel that implies that.
It's curious how accurate this is. The immortals are just worse Malefics in every way. Malefics at least have searchers, a way to protect field spells, and a way to bypass their own restrictions.

roar of the earthbound is such a useless card, i have no idea why they made it real, since in the anime while you cant attack an earthbound immortal monsters, you could still attack directly, and this dumb trap was made to counter that...and since thats impossible to do in TCG, this trap serves no purpose at all
In Duel Links, I usually have a Linewalker next to my Immortal so the opponent will try to destroy it by battle which Roar can prevent and its burn effect will usually drop their LP to zero (you only have 4000 LP in Duel Links) but it's definitely my least favorite card you can get from the skill Earthbound Charity (allows you to randomly set either Roar, Whirlwind or Wave from outside your deck once per duel if you have an Immortal on the field), I'd never waste an actual card slot in my deck for that thing.
I'm still 100% sure the monkey being so incredibly bad, even for Earhtbound Immortal standards, was an inside joke about how the character who used it appeared out of nowhere and was so irrelevant to the point where it's the only Dark Signer that doesn't reappear for the rest of the anime. Even in Tag Force they made jokes with that.
I doubt it was intentional; more realistically it's just Hikokubo's brain dribbling out of his skull again. It is, however, fitting. Because man, Demak sucked ass.
Demak didn't appear out of nowhere tho. He's the only Dark Signer who's actually foreshadowed in the Fortune Cup arc (the hand holding Ancient Fairy Dragon).

Well, this one might be because they weren't designed to be played together in the first place. No one in the 5Ds anime ever used more than one in their deck. With like 4 support cards dedicated to it, max.
Laughed out loud a bit with that end to the field spell part, “run three” while sighing, great comedy as usual. And wow, would’ve expected the modern support to do at least a little bit more to make a strategy like this viable, especially after how much effort seemingly went into the new Sacred Beast cards with how awful they were before.
All they needed for the field spell was "While you control [something relating to Earthbound Immortals] this card cannot be targeted. You can tribute summon Earthbound Immortal monsters without requiring tributes." Perfect for casual mondays, but somehow that was too tough for Konami.
@@haruhirogrimgar6047 Or, hell, if they wanted to do a Synchro thing, why not have "once per turn, while you control a Synchro monster, you can Special Summon an Earthbound Immortal from your hand"? Why not make the search effect hit Earthbound Immortal cards, rather than spells and traps? Like, one of the things I found while trying to playtest the given deck profile is that no matter what, an Earthbound Immortal Inca deck is always going to be short of something. Even with a great hand (Dawnwalker, Duskwalker, Geoglyph, Linewalker), you still can't do the full combo unless you get one of the Synchros into the Graveyard first somehow. And if one of the pieces is missing, you may as well just quit.

To this day, I wonder if the EBI would've been potentially okay if their effects were closer to the clause on the anime versions, where instead of needing a Field Spell to live, their effects on the field were simply negated if there was no face-up Field Spell. That way, they just become vanillas when the Field is popped, instead of fucking dying.
They probably still would've sucked since you still need 2 tributes to summon them and a field spell to make them actually worth summoning (and there weren't many good ways of putting them onto the board that couldn't have been used for, say, a Monarch like Raiza or Caius instead), and they still have no actual protection
@@selectivepontification8766 They were also immune to the opponent's Spell/Traps, an immensely useful protection at a time where monsters with removal effect were far from the norm.
These guys really need a tribute engine. Pity they never adapted Sergey's cards from Arc-V, they didn't really relate to the boss monsters but at least they'd have other Synchros and small monsters to sacrifice.
zeoxyman Earthbound servants was basically Arc V doing the right thing with the Earthbound Immortal Archetype. Sergei wasn’t even a Dark Signer and even he used Earthbounds effectively.
Burning Abyss was a good tribute engine if your field was empty. I never said the deck Iran years ago was good. it was an edgy mess. 1 of each Immortal, a Malefic Stardust, the random Gold rarity BA's i opened back then, and some random dark type support, with like 10 field spells jammed in to make sure I had something to activate. Geartown and Dragon were good tertiary won cons
And also make a series of cards showing Kathy from the Zexal anime finding out about the Dark Signers due to sneaking into the back of the Heartland City Museum and having her go mad after finding out Yuma chose to stay in the Astral World alongside Bronk and Tori. Resulting in say Anna dueling her. With Kathy vanishing after the duel never to be seen again.
I'm just waiting for Konami to release retrains from all the Synchros used by the Dark Signers which have effects to synergise with their respective Earthbound Immortals. Tragedy Dragon, Zeman the Ape King, Dragon Queen of Tragic Ends, Hundred-Eyes Dragon, etc. A small effective synchro engine could go along way, in this. I get this would be like gluing on 5 pairs of training wheels to a rusted unicycle but what else can they do?
Good thing most of the Earthbound Servant cards from Arc-V are finally going make it to the real life card game, and while they won't make the Immortals meta, at least you don't have to run the Incan deck if you don't want to use it
Yep. They weren't supposed to be played together at all (that is how they were originally designed) and the only few earthbound cards were meant as support for your SINGLE earthbound. Then after years later, Komoney decided "hey, let's make them an achetype where you can play multiple earthbounds at once". Like why. Why! Earthbounds monsters would be cool and decent (if you would run ONLY 1 on a fun casual deck) if it wasn't for the fact that the blow themselves up if there wasn't a field spell on the field. In the anime this never wasn't a problem because speed world was always there and well... You can't really GET RID of speed world. But irl this was just a disaster.
I remember watching 5Ds on and off as a kid so I was never really sure of what was going on. What I was sure of however, was that I was absolutely terrified of Ccapac Apu because I just so happened to tune in one morning when it’s debut episode was on and I didn’t know what the hell was going on aside from “protagonist bikes away for his life from giant dark figure covered in weird glowing lines”.
It still irks me that the Earthbound immortal archetype is still missing about half of the spell/trap lineup from the anime and the card from Duel Links, which is actually competent (if not a bit slow).
My main memory of Wiraqocha Rasca is the enemy AI in Duel Links having a weird tendency to shuffle back the field spell to activate its effect, immediately destroying itself.
To be fair, they were really immortal in the anime, as the speed duels had a Permenant Field Spell that was active from turn0. So, once you never needed to bother about field spells. Its like achilles replacing his legs with robotics so he has no heel.
@@carpedm9846 Furthermore, their spell/trap immunity in the show is honestly not half bad, really nice even. That too makes them actually quite threatening boss monsters in the show, specifically. Which is an even further shame that it was removed for the physical card game. (Also, please print Earthbound Servant's Konami!)
As clunky as this archetype is, it’ll always have a lot of appreciation from me for getting me interested in the Nazca Lines way back in Middle School and showing me the unique inspirations Yugioh takes with its card designs. Here’s hoping they’ll find a way to round out the deck in the future.
At least 4 of the 7 decks they were played in already had a field spell. Then recent support gave Rex one. Although, I was disappointed the new Infernity support didn't give them a Field Spell. It means there's still two decks without field spells for their EI to survive on.
@@ScionStorm1 Well, that's the anime specifically. Most of the Earthbounds don't really synergize with their respective Dark Signer Decks much, any more than any other large beater that shares their type or attribute. And, hell, most of the field spells involved don't really synergize with Earthbounds either, with the only real exception being that Future Visions can trigger Asilla Piscu.
I built an Earthbound Deck in the 2011 DS game by cheesing them with Mausoleum of the Emperor. A field spell that got around the tribute requirement was pretty great. I felt like a goddamn genius. Then when I tried it in YGO Pro, I got mushed into oblivion. Obviously.
Late to the part but fun to see this video! Thanks Rata! Konami looked back at Earthbounds and Meklords, laughed and created Timelords. Not any better but hey, they're OP-ish.
fun fact: the best earthbound immortal card is a non-infernity infernity staple synchro monster which is mostly if not exclusively used as a way to loop mirage
I have spent all this time trying to understand why geoglyph only searches earthbound immortal back row and I physically can’t find a reason. It can’t be so it can’t search itself. Because it could just specify it can’t search itself in its effect text, or not have earthbound in its name. The only other option would be to stop it from searching call of the earthbound. But there are so many other ways they could have gotten around that naming quirk without limiting the field spells usefulness that much. I guess the only remaining explanation is they didn’t want earthbounds to be meta so the crowd wouldn’t get their souls stolen during an event.

Looking at the cards proper, alongside their use in the 5D's anime, I fully feel like the Earthbound Immortals are meant to be a "Splash In" kind of deal. Like, you don't build a dedicated Earthbound Immortal deck. You build a different, separate deck, and if the deck strategy and synergy has an accompanying Earthbound Immortal with an effect that works well, you could add it in for an additional boost. Especially in an era where being able to pull out Tribute Fodder is as easy as breathing. Also, seems like modern Yu-Gi-Oh has more of a reliance on Field Spells, so in theory, one "Earthbound Immortal" presents a bit of a potential play. Since the cards check if *Any* Field Spell is present, and recent Master Rules permit Field Spells on both sides of the field, it presents your opponent with another problem if they can't deal with the Boss directly: Lose their own Field Spell and yours to quickly pop the Immortal, or try to eat through the Immortal's attacks. However, this is still a massively lessened strategy due to easier field control. Like using Ra-Sphere Mode and Kaijus (From what I hear). For instance, I've experimented with a Fortune Lady deck, and Aslla Piscu works well because the Fortune Lady's Field Spell "Future Visions" is one easy way to trip Piscu's floating Front Row Destruction/Burn effect easy. Also, her last effect is a dangerous effect your opponent doesn't want (unless their front row is empty anyways) as it triggers when Piscu leaves the field. And considering a Fortune Lady deck is most likely running "Interdimentional Matter Transporter" and even "Compulsory Evacuation Device" to combo with Lady Light, they can also act as on-demand triggers for Piscu's "Destroy as many face-up monsters your opponent controls and inflict 800 damage for each monster destroyed." effect easy. Also, in an arguable sense, you could include Hardened Armed Dragon as a tribute to make Earthbound Immortals more difficult to deal with while also giving Self-Protection (When Hardened Armed Dragon is used in a Trubute Summon to summon a Lv. 7+ Monster, that monster cannot be destroyed by Card Effects. Including its own effect),
FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, konami please make spiders and sharks an archetype already We've had these two being an actual thing in the manga and anime since Duel Monster and became a big deal in Zexal
What if they still had their anime effects: They are unaffected by spell/trap cards (not monster effects though) and without a field spell their effects are negated but they stay on the field.
I don't understand why Konami thought it was smart to give these monsters multiple restrictions. Even for '09 standards, requiring 2 tributes and a field spell for a beater with a battle oriented effect was not a fair trade of input for output. They probably only made these to be villainess boss monsters for which our protags could struggle to beat over until something something Synchro Summon. It strikes as more marketing the new hot mechanic and restricting it for only the good guys, for this reason. Its why all the effects are based on burn or whatever so the protag can have that 100LP comeback, we've seen a million times.
to be fair, they were legitimately better in the context of the anime, where costs matter less, and specifically 5ds with it's weird series-specific rules that the immortals took advantage of. though, yeah, they were designed to be anime boss monsters first and foremost.
I remember trying make them work in tag Force 5 in 2012, i was really good in these days with deck building.. Man they sucks, like really hard, every single engine felt just better without them, even an engine with no win condition were better lmao

Like, one of the things I found while trying to playtest the given deck profile is that no matter what, an Earthbound Immortal Inca deck is always going to be short of something. fun fact: the best earthbound immortal card is a non-infernity infernity staple synchro monster which is mostly if not exclusively used as a way to loop mirage

At least Supay Duskwalker is cute.
