Webinar covers some basic fundamentals of coin grading, including reasons to grade coins, the elements of grading Mint State coins, and the elements of grading Circulated Coins. Hosted on September 20, 2013 in conjunction with the PCGS Collectors Education Program, which is held live at each Long Beach Expo.
Kudos to PCGS for offering expert information free of charge to the average collector.

What?

My dad has been collecting since 2016. I had no idea just how detailed grading was. Thanks for the educational video.
Amazing how you KINDLY took your time on each grade to learn us ENTHUSIASTS. MUCH APPRECIATED!❤
Nothing like knowledge right from a trusted source. Thanks for it
One of the best videos I've ever seen thus far on youtube. Very educational and of importance to me. In fact the methods used in describing grade types and coin observations were very enjoyable. Glad to say when it comes to eye appeal in grading, PCGS shares exactly/ very close to the same perceptions I have as a fairly new collector. It was encouraging and of great interest as to where to add and where to deduct on a grade based on toning and or luster. Please note as a viewer I would love to see a video on detecting cleaning and or polishing and how to spot them carefully and how (details) and maybe even damaged coins fit the scales and where do they stand etc Thank you very much
Fine lines throughout the coin is one indicator of cleaning and also if there is some blue thin goo that rubs off .
Are you supposed to clean your coins if you think there dirty? I was told not to bc it might be a important piece of the coin, is that right or wrong?
@@missy6597 correct, do not clean coins. There might be cases for acetone, or for ancients or other buried coins maybe distilled water can be useful, but not most other dips and solvents (stay away from the many products sold for coins), and wiping is always to be avoided completely.
Well.... you guys will really love my collection. Starting at 1887 etc. And in close to the best of condition. Been holding them since the 60's. So many different coins to auction off. So everyone have a great day.
Just getting into the hobby; I will listen and watch for now.
Thank you for taking the time to make such an informative video. One of the best I've seen and it taught me a lot.
Very helpful, right to the point. I was at a coin show years ago and this collector/dealer had one of the most beautiful Morgan dollar I asked to see it, it was graded MS 64 by PCGS, after looking at the coin I asked how do you get to an MS 65, he reached down and pulled out a PCGS MS 65 and there was a difference in the 2 coins the 65 was spectacular. Since then I started trying to learn more about grading UNC coins. Your presentation was very helpful to my education on this subject. Thanks for sharing this information. I would love to come to the school you mentioned but it's a long way from Pensacola Florida and I ain't no spring chicken anymore.
I agree completely, this was so very informative, but like you I’m N Fl, and am not a spring chicken 🐓 anymore myself, plus I can’t afford these stupid gas prices going on these days. Oh goodness Long Beach, that has to be in Cally, oh no, I could never make that trip. But to y’all that do, congratulations and best of luck, happy coin hunting/collecting
It's possible the other big grading company holds similar classes, and they are located in Florida. I'm nowhere near either, so must learn from videos and books.
PCGS, in my opinion, is the base value of knowledge in coin collecting. I only collect their graded coins. Thank you for the basic information on grading. worth while watching.
Thank you for doing this video! A great tool for me when I start determining what my dug coins might be worth!
June 18-2021, that was pretty damn good, thanks for sharing your knowledge with us
Thank you for sharing this valuable information! I’d love to learn more about grading coins!
First class I'm already a professional.
Thanks for putting up this video!
Thank-you Mike for the webinar. Very well presented. I look foward to the next one. Will you be doing one on mint state and proof coins? Also one about cleaned coins ? Duane Of Reno NV
How much does it cost to grade a coin please comment back thank you very much I'm always been wanting to have a few coins graded but I would like to know how much I'm looking at to have that done thank you very much please let me know

Why would 3 Replies be missing unless perhaps they were removed by the authors.
Thank you for the information. Could you possibly do a more indepth on each coin ? I'm currently learning how to grade from what the red book offers.
i have a 1903 2.50 gold coin and it looks great- prices are all over the chart should it be graded
I have a Non Mint 1943 steel wheat penny and was wondering what can I do to see the grade of it and how much it is worth in order to sell it.
I am a beginner and started on coins in my closet. It seems I have more than enough to infact sell some of them. Now I am a bit loss, I don't know how to start. Maybe I have to get some ideas from you guys. I have an old coins. Thanks for the information you gave us. I try to understand it.
I'm new to the hobby, but I primarily search Pennies. I have set aside 3 to 5 EXCELLENT ( IMO ) examples of " deep" die caps. Especially a 1963 and a 1968 penny. Under a mag. Glass and coin scope I see VERY LITTLE ( if ANY ) " Circulation interference marks!" I just want to know if it's worth the cost of grading to send them in?
As a person very new at trying to sell old coins, the grading co. Takes months to grade and return coins, which could change its value. Thank for the info.
Very well done most of the coins you showed I had in my collection and most were the same grade I hope to see another webnar
Just submitted 8 coins to pcgs and Hopefully they come back with high marks.😊
hello, I have some coins to evaluate. what address did you ship to? Thanks
I appreciate you for this lovely course.
Thank you for your information and your time.
PCGS is good company.
I'm new to collecting within a year . And have yet to have a coin professionally graded . Initially I was going to go with NGC because their website, which is much better tbh . But after listening to the coinhelpu guy on UA-cam I may be sending my collection to you for both restoration and grading. So two points, get a better website haha and show some love to the coinhelpu guy . He got you at least one customer
Thanks for the free education ,it's much appreciated . As for toning ,I only like the the circular toning that looks like a rainbow .
WOW! Excellent, excellent, excellent! Nothing else to say but, Thank You PCGS!
I have a set of 1943 pennies anish in a plastic case and they are pressed in cardboard and on the cardboard it says war sense 4 cents 1943 and I have them from each mint what would something like that go for and they are are a shiny luster please comment back Thank you very much for this video
Thank you, I have learned quite a bit from this video, very well presented.
Excellent presentation been wanting a series like th;is. for a long time.learned quite a lot .. Thanks
Thank you for this information!!
So, my PCGS MS70 First Day of Issue 2021 Silver Eagle, is allowed to have 3 scuffs on it? I have other Silver Eagles with maybe 3 scuffs, but not even graded. I don't remember hearing you mention the MS69 here.
He didn’t mention MS79 because it doesn’t exist
@@soxtalkstudiosautomatedcha9183 yeah, I know. I can't type like I used to, since my thumb surgery. I meant MS69. I'll fix it.
There, I fixed it.
But really, most people would have understood what I meant.
Hey Alex I need your help. From watching your channel and a few others. I recently got into this coin collecting and found a couple very rare coins. (1975 Roosevelt Dime no s Mark in great condition and a 1944 Abraham Lincoln penny) Is there any advice you can give me to start this journey of trying to sale these rare coins ?
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Ps keep up the good work either way.💯✌️
What happens if part of a coin (say 10% of its face in one spot) is worn, but the other coin is of excellent condition. How are such coins graded?
I suppose the most asked question is if someone finds a rare coin like a 43D copper how does that individual safely get it authenticated and graded and not be told " it didn't arrive in the mail. "
Awesome presntation! The new collector like myself, this is a must see vidio...
I would like to attend one of your seminars unfortunately I live on SSI at the time being within the next two months I will save up so I can come least two back-to-back one every month for the next 2 months
Very interesting. Very useful. Thank you. Please do more. Any topic works for us out here.
So, in regards to luster, proofs or proof-like strikes, will often be absent great shows of luster, flow lines, and cartwheeling, whereas in these cases we opt to prefer for cameo? Is this correct? (There's a gag in here somewhere about two sides of the same coin... but of course it wouldn't be the same one, maybe only high end ms business strike and its proof counterpart).
Thank the. P. C. G. S,,,for all the information for giving us an opportunity to take advantage,
I. Went to the. Convention. Center,,here in. Orlando. Florida,,it was a coin show whit the most beautiful peaces__ antique too but I was looking to have a few coins check for an opinion,,. I did enjoy even if I didn't haved degration on mine, but I. Thankful for the experience,
Also I'm looking to professional clean and grade a 1943 steel penny. You tell me.
Hi Mario, you can learn more about restoration services here www.pcgs.com/restoration
Idk if it went through but I accidentally hit the👎symbol. I do enjoy the show. Sincerely, G
Thank you so much for putting out this video.
a properly graded AU58 is a nicer looking coin than MS60 or 61. AU58 is a high end AU coin.
MS60 or 61 is a seriously flawed bottom of the bag coin.
Interesting set of words -bottom of the bag - like that ! I think I will use it ! Thanks !
Appreciate this webinar, so much
If you buy a graded coin from an auction do you have to get it graded again?
No, some people choose to have reholders done for imaging, but it is not necessary to submit the coin again after purchase.
Informative.
I share this with my students.
Cheers Y'all.
So I’m curious if die cracks or other mint errors effect the grade?
Which is the best place to auction a coin to get highest value.
Ok so that is all for circulated coins. What about bullions that you buy from Kitco or Apmex? How would you grade those, and can it make a difference? I am guessing all these coins are in perfect condition when you buy them, but they are not considered numismatic coins... can you give me some pointers on that?
Hi thank you so much for your perfect description. After I watched this video I made up my mind to grade couple of my coins that I had for years.
So after trying to order the system kinda bided me with a contact because I didn’t know that I could grade my coins with signing up to pay for account. I don’t have any other use only to grade couple of my coins.
But now after I signed up and try to order the service I am kinda being charged full price……
Am confused and your system is very confusing.
When I signed up I paid for 4 coins to be graded.
But now I can grade 1 of them yet it’s like the money I paid was just some kinda free money.
???????
I'd like to see the additional videos of this saga.
What about LED lighting ? For verities is what I have been using right to see my verities and I really don’t see as good as used to . What wattage are you guys so that I’m not making the mistakes that may occur while I’m trying put together something to send in.?

Awesome video. Very informative and helpful.
I have a Buffalo Indian Head Nickel 1919 1926 and nickel with no date on them where do I go to see if they are worth anything
Cool little class. Thanks pcgs. I appreciate it.
If I send you a picture of a coin can you tell me what it is. All I can tell it looks as it has the 13 US stripes and can somewhat can read united States.
To Richard below; I just attended a grading class put on by NGC at the Whitman Coin Expo in Philadelphia.
I am really confused. I have some circulated coins that, compared with the examples shown, could be graded as MSXX, but you say that MS... is only for uncirculated? Did I understand well? There are coins well conserved and seem as if uncirculated, how to distinguish circulated from uncirculated if you also say in some slide that scratches don't necessarily preclude circulation? I will share with you some pics in the next lines, please, help me to understand this. Because in the middle of all this there are variants and coinage mistakes. And, if I get a coin from the minting house I know immediately that has to be graded around MSs, but, if Ia get a coin from the bank and it has some quality close to MS but is in circulation, what can I do? I think there is no clear international parameter to distinguish and guide about the decision of which criterion take.
I have some coins (circulated) that obverse could be graded in one category and the reverse with another, which is the criterion to grade the full coin? Because it is natural that wear is not even. Is there some sort of average approach?
About the Eye appearance... the concept is too vague, I think, and very subjective. Maybe not at the moment to grade a coin, but to value it. I know some collectors prefer and value more those coins which "poor appeal" gives them character, personality if we could say that and tells not only the history of its coinage but also the circumstances in which was used, found, etc., making it attractive not only to eyes but to mind. And what about singularities caused by coinage failures?
I think this confusing way to graduate is partly the cause and effect of many collectors chasing "the perfect currency" and resorting awkwardly to cleaning or polishing the pieces. I clean my coins because I dislike seeing them dirty, but I do it in a way that does not affect the patina, the brightness and, instead, the part of dirt that can reduce visibility to areas of the engraving is detached. I never look to polish them or use aggressive methods for metal and printed art. In addition, since coins, with new diseases, can become the focus of infection, I prefer to prevent rather than regret. And then here and in this, I find a serious contradiction of collecting that, on the one hand, invites to keep the pieces as they have been acquired, with all the imperfections; and, on the other, those that seem unpolluted are valued more. The circulated coins should not be the norm, but the circulated ones should establish the norm at least meanwhile effective money is the rule. Well, the same thing happens with bills and stamps. The latter, from a few decades to the present, are worth more if they are new than if they are used and, in times when the email has cleared the traditional mail, the used stamps are more rare than the unused ones.
Just take a look at this and help me to understand:

Can you send one coin at a time ? To get graded?
Hi Sue, yes, you can send in as many or as few coins as you would like.
But the coins that were being graded on Eye appeal Look like they have been cleaned. Is that possible? And Wood graders know for sure if they’ve been cleaned? Does anyone know?
