Caesar: from Dictator to God

  • Though Julius Caesar was born into an established and respected family, few--other than, perhaps, the man himself--could have imagined his meteoric rise to fame and power.
He handily rose through the cursus honorum, the standard series of jobs traditionally taken by ambitious young Roman men. He proved himself a capable and resilient military commander. He was elected consul of Rome, and, in time, was so beloved by the Roman people that he was elected Dictator for Life.
Caesar's reactionary conservative enemies in the Senate felt that Caesar had garnered more power than one man should ever have--plus, Caesar's promises of wealth redistribution threatened their fortunes. They decided something had to be done about him, and the rest is very well-known history.
But remarkably, Caesar's ascent didn't end with his death. The Roman people still had one more position in mind for him: that of a god.
What did it mean for the Romans to declare a person a god? Did they really believe in the person's divinity, or was it just an honor? Did they pray to Julius Caesar? Was Caesar on par with Jupiter himself, king of the Roman pantheon?
We answer these questions (and more) in today's video.

Caesar's ascension to godhood was the origin of the imperial cult, an honor that was limited to members of the royal house - which non-royal Roman do you believe most deserved to be recognized as a god?

A better example of this would be the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC, which places Lincoln in the place of a god in a structure that is modeled after Greek temples like the Parthenon.

it's always been strange to me to imagine the deification of caesar. it's probably the more modern cultural differentiation between human and divine, but i have to imagine it would be hard to see caesar as anything other than just.... a guy, especially to those who actually knew him. i can't imagine voting to deify the president, or my coworker dave, or something. and i'm surprised at how romans didn't seem to think it was strange considering it had never happened before during the republic - maybe they did, and that perspective just hasn't survived though. maybe things had been so strange for so long cause of the civil wars that they just accepted it with the rest. idk it's such an interesting episode

The growing popularity of eastern mystery cults helped pave the way for Romans to begin gradually erasing the boundaries between humans and the divine. That being said, I do wonder how many senators voted for it out of real theological conviction and how many were simply cowed into it by political pressure.

Caesar was a man of his time but if you want to call him tyrant, I would call him the very first of the competent tyrants, overshadowed only by the nephew and heir Octavian, Caesar August,

For a man that was so concerned with his place in history, it might be a little silver lining to know that his assassination is the most famous murder of all time

@@tribunateSPQR Interesting way to put it, which got me thinking. I was trying to think of any murder more "famous", and the only I might argue would be Jesus Christ.

I must confess as an amateur Romaboo I have been getting hooked to your content! Though, I have peaked into the channel’s twitter and so knowing this is a channel considered as ‘a leftist take on classical history’ I am prepared for what is to come. I am not a leftist personally (I’m more of a center-right guy at the moment), but I enjoy the fresh perspective and I am eager for your future vids.

Glad to hear you're enjoying the videos! We're a two-man team -- Gaius is definitely to the left of me, while I'm a vacillating, fence-sitting moderate. Individual politics aside, we always try to ensure that we're making a sound, factually accurate argument.

3:00 The star above the head of the ascending Julius Caesar is in the form of a cross. The artist knew the cross was the emblem of the Imperial Cult before it became the symbol of Christ's Crucifiction. (Justin Martyr, 1 Apology 55) This is because at Julius Caesar's funeral, his wax image was mounted upon a cruciform tropaeum that was raised when the crowd was at fever pitch and Marc Anthony spun it round and round so everyone could see every one of Caesar's 23 stab wounds replicated in the image. Then two men wearing swords and bearing spears and torches show up and initially light up Caesar's bier. (Francesco Carotta, _Was Jesus Caesar?_ and _The Gospel of Caesar_ (video).

We have future content planned on how the concepts of divinity differed among Hellenic pagans and the Hebrew monotheists. The first Christians intentionally channeled many aspects of prevailing popular religion in the terminology they used to describe Jesus but the words themselves were often used to mean very different things

Ah, excellent distinction -- as I understand it, the former being more of a generally immortal entity, and the latter being a proper capital-G god. Thanks for this!
