  • On March 13th, 2024 I flew the Bonanza from Auburn, California to San Carlos, California. This video is meant to help nervous fliers overcome their fear of flying by understanding how pilots handle threats, both expected and unexpected.
    During this flight, my vacuum pump failed en route to SQL (San Carlos). No big deal, we took a look at the pilots operating handbook (POH), actioned the procedures, and continued to San Carlos.

    Thank you for sharing, very nostalgic as I received my private pilot license from a San Carlos FBO in 1970. Flew to Auburn and Alta Sierra often, always VFR and upon return used Mount Diablo as guide along with a paper sectional. GPS technology has sure changed navigating. Thanks again for your professional and detailed flight information.

    • @shaneboulds5240
      @shaneboulds5240 4 місяці тому

      Personal opinion only. I feel like it's almost a bad thing to check and verbalize this many times. I've seen a guy look and touch the gear lever and say "gear down three green" when the gear was indeed up and there were no green lights.
      If the act of saying it over and over again makes it a mantra instead of a check, you're doing it too much.
      Me personally, I have "trigger" points at different phases. In the pattern, the gear gets checked when I put it down and again on final. On an instrument approach, it's when I put it down, and at 500agl.

    • @DialAPilot
      @DialAPilot  4 місяці тому

    • @DialAPilot
      @DialAPilot  4 місяці тому +2

      @@shaneboulds5240 totally agree if there isn't an actual check going on. I definitely don't mean this next statement to say that I am doing it right- but every time I do it is a very conscious verification that I am actually seeing three green lights and a landing gear lever being in the down position. During my CFI days, I saw the same thing you did- going through the motions but no actual verification of what they're supposedly "checking".
      The only reason I use this personal technique is due to the fact that most of the flying I do in small airplanes is in VFR conditions, and therefore a variety of approach conditions exist. Sometimes it is a short approach, sometimes it is straight in, etc. So I just force it into my scan as much as possible.
      Again, this is exclusively personal technique only- I don't think it is the right approach for everybody. But it does seem to work for me!

    I remember my first required solo took me from San Jose (Reed Hillview) north to Ukiah then to Auburn and back to San Jose. For me the most challenging parts were climbing out of Ukiah to get altitude to head east to Auburn. Then I had a little trouble actually spotting the Auburn airport (the location I flew to in 1979 seemed different) . I was chasing the runway downhill that day due to the prevailing winds. Other that than it was smooth 'sailing'.

    • @DialAPilot
      @DialAPilot  4 місяці тому

      That is correct! It’s a nice way to get down to SFO. If your building is right next to San Carlos Airport, the commute would be great for you. TRK is a great airport, especially with an airplane that has the equipment to reliably fly out of the airport during the heat of summer (turbo). I’d be happy to chat with you about it.

    The checklist is so good to see in action. Is there a standard checklist per aircraft or are you responsible for creating one?

    • @DialAPilot
      @DialAPilot  4 місяці тому +1

      Great question! The checklists are all part of a Pilots Operating Handbook (POH) that is written by the aircraft manufacturer and approved by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). So the checklist is standardized. A lot of pilots will create a shortened checklist to use for their own purposes though for the "normal procedures", but still use the full checklist for the "non-normal". This is exclusively referring to the small airplane world. In the airline world, it is standardized from the airline, the aircraft manufacturer, and the FAA.

  • @rnrnrkrk994
    @rnrnrkrk994 4 місяці тому

    I've always wondered why communication from air traffic control has to be verbal? Is it simply because they want your eyes outward, like in cars? Depending on the radio quality, it's difficult to hear and I feel control tower has to be the bottleneck when there's a lot of traffic in the air..

    • @DialAPilot
      @DialAPilot  4 місяці тому +1

      Great question. Some air traffic control facilities do have the ability to communicate with aircraft via a system similar to text messaging- it’s called CPDLC (controller pilot data link connection). Both the aircraft and the facility have to be equipped for it. On the 777 we have it, but mostly use it during cruise, and then use voice procedures during taxi, takeoff, and landing.

    So what's yer story, did I hear yousay you were heading to Bejing? News flash...that A36 aint gonna make it!
    Suggestion...Maybe do a voice over talkng about what the failed vaccum pump means. Which systems are affected etc...Why its cool on a VFR day vs in actual IMC I think even the novice viewers would understand the major differences. Also would explain why you were so relaxed. Not a big deal this time!
    Good stuff. Do you have an airline channel for you other job?

    • @DialAPilot
      @DialAPilot  4 місяці тому +1

      Yep, I fly the Boeing 777 for my real job (best job in the world) and was headed to Beijing that day out of SFO. Vacuum driven anything, and mixture control belong in history, not aircraft. Magnetos too. They were fine for the 1940s, but now they should only be on small power tools, like weed eaters and chainsaws. Their weak spark and lack of reliability is why you have to have two of them. Fuel injection, which is cheap in other markets, along with modern spark plugs mean that most people never experienced a fouled spark plug in their entire life. Because most people don't fly.
