i love this review!! i hate that people say saltburn isn't original... i found it SUPER original as far as its presentation, aesthetic and overall approach... it's a lot like the Barbie movie. It very obviously had a TON of very well known influences, but when you put all of the influences in a blender and top it with a layer of the director's favorite frosting... it becomes its own thing entirely. i expect we'll see a ton of saltburn-inspired aesthetic movies coming out in the next couple of years bc it's undeniably iconic.

It is a shame a bit that they went for recent fashion pieces, they could have picked from the collections round the time when the movie was set, however I still do enjoy the looks and storyline of the movie.

Yeah totally! One of the challenges they faced was finding pieces from 2006/2007. The costume designer mentioned that most of those pieces are still in people’s closets and are fairly hard to find right now since it’s not true “vintage” yet.
Another piece of an incorrect time period item that I found was a copy of the movie “10,000 BC” next to the tv while they were watching Superbad. 10,000 BC came out in 2008 lol. But that’s really nitpicking haha!

This was such a well made video!! You deserve so many more subscribers and I’m sure if you keep putting out this high of quality content you will!
I loved your breakdown of the visual aspects since this movie was just overwhelmingly pretty to look at. Also I think the concept of him convincing himself of his own genius at the end is a great analysis and makes a ton of sense for his character! I’ve heard people criticize that scene as underestimating the audience’s intelligence and spoon feeding the movie but I think seeing it as him still being an unreliable narrator is much more interesting than taking it at face value! My only criticism is that while the directors intention may not have been to make a class commentary, by having the dynamics of class be a main point of the plot, it in unavoidable. No matter what her intention, given the imbalance of wealth, this movie will have something to do with class. And so given that, the lack of acknowledgment towards class issues was disappointing since that’s kinda what the movie hinges on. For me I saw this movie as a fun drama thriller and I think that would’ve come across more if she made Oliver come from another affluent family that maybe is much less wealthy and still have him pretend to be poor rather than make them middle class. That way it would be less of a class commentary if that wasn’t her intention. Great video overall!!

Hey thanks for the great critique of my critique. Love when my videos generates good discussion.
Appreciate the love and also the criticism. I think so many reviewers were focusing on the aspect of class, it turned me off to talking about it at all since that wasn’t the director’s intent. But I agree with you that it doesn’t necessarily matter what her intent was when she presented us with such out of touch wealth. I thought the wealth displayed was rather satirical, with James Catton’s trivialization of his historic suit of armor as just a funny costume, and also Elspeth’s “where’s Liverpool?” question(which I didn’t talk about).
Totally agree that it would’ve been good to make Oliver rich as well if class wasn’t really a part of it, but him being middle class inherently created that commentary on class. I cut out a portion of the video where I talk about how I could see this as a commentary on how difficult it is to move up in social class. No matter how hard you work towards becoming rich, there are systems in place to keep you from moving up. I joke about how it turns an innocuous comment like “oh I would kill for that job, or life, or whatever” and actually plays it out in a satirical way, in a “what if you actually did it?” Kind of way. If that makes sense.

@@jansengarside that’s fair the rich people are played for laughs for how out of touch they are. And the “I’d kill for that” taken seriously is a fun way to look at it!
