    What was once the greediest way to consume clothing, not couture is one of the least. It gives back to artisans, helps continue an art form and it keeps techniques, crafts and fabrics alive. I find this juxtaposition of how couture began and how it is now rather interesting

    Haute couture used to be very beautiful. Now much of it is truly hideous. Whoever creates it doesn't adore the female form any longer, they hate it. Apart from the monstrous creations, they are still using emaciated women as models. In my opinion, it's tragic.

  • @themarquis336
    @themarquis336 Місяць тому

    You have the typical first-year fashion student superficial and completely wrong idea of what couture is. You're smitten by ballgowns and high-concept and you forget (or, more likely, entirely ignore) that real Haute Couture clients, even today, wear couture pyjamas and even work-clothes and loungewear. If you think Haute Couture is "the purest representation or artistic expression in fashion", you've clearly never seen Rachel Mellon's Balenciaga gardening clothes - there's no 'artistic expression' whatsoever, they're just perfectly crafted pants and camisoles an Haute Couture master designed for a client to wear while kneeling on the grass planting her flowers. And yet, those gardening clothes are more authentic Haute Couture than any absurd Like-bait Daniel Roseberry has designed for Schiapparelli, but, of course, you wouldn't understand that, because you ignorantly believe that couture is art and "expression". You may know some things, but you're very far from understanding what Haute Couture is. You should read more books and watch less fashion shows.

    Love this! However cheap clothes are just cheap…most are not at all practical.

    • @jansengarside
      @jansengarside Місяць тому

      Haha yes you’re correct. I was speaking more to practicality for the wallet in any given moment lol. Investing in higher quality clothing will save money in the long run of course, but I think the population has been brainwashed into thinking that fast fashion is the best “bang for your buck”. And if I’m comparing fast fashion to couture, fast fashion is much more practical😂

  • @ohthankg-dforthebourgeoisi9800
    @ohthankg-dforthebourgeoisi9800 Місяць тому

    Well presented. I hear your passion and your admiration of these creative people. I do want to remind you that all art is created to be sold, including, and perhaps even especially, anything involving clothes. I guess I don’t think couture has maintained its relevance. The disparity between what is considered couture and what is street wear, today, is so vastly different than when many of the designers you highlighted got started, in the post war period. There was a hunger to reestablish the genteel idea of European culture. This stands in contrast to the designers’ motivations of today to deconstruct European ideas of beauty or to declare them racist at their core. The result is that we’re left with ugly couture. Or in someways even worse, irrelevant couture. Couture that seems a wasteful expression of corporate branding. This lack of relevance between how people express formality and beauty in their personal style and the couturier’s art has resulted in people dressing in a variety of styles, mostly fast fashion, and buying only a purse from these fashion houses. And after these price increases, that will be even increasingly rare. A person now has to be either a billionaire or be sponsored by a corporate entity to be able to wear these productions. Even the average woman could sew or had access to a dressmaker even 30 years ago. Not so today. Our clothes are produced with fabrics that are high-tech like Gore-Tex that require special techniques. My point is haute couture is becoming like the quill pen is to writing.

    • @jansengarside
      @jansengarside Місяць тому

      Good points. Of course clothing is meant to be sold however I don’t think “all art” is meant to be sold, as many amazing artists never sold their work and lived in relative poverty or their work was only sold after they had passed away. However, yes I do think there has largely been a push to monetize everything we do today and there is less art for the genuine artistry of it. And couture is really where a designer can imagine and create garments without the underlying concerns of production feasibility, marketing, sales numbers, meeting cost, etc. A couture designer has free rein to be creative, because then the RTW lines will be corporate distillations of those ideas. Couture will sometimes be sold but will also often be donated or styled on a celebrity for brand awareness of course, but couture is not a leading profit/revenue source for any fashion house. And like I said in the video, couture reflects the zeitgeist and helps shape it. Couture in the past may have been “beautiful” in the case of someone like Dior, but he was also creating constructing and uncomfortable garments that perpetuated Edwardian standards of beauty with garments that looked nice but were very uncomfortable to wear (corsets, highly structured sleeves limiting movement, etc). Today couture designers are of course deconstructing European beauty standards and they might be “ugly” to some but they are a reflection of the social and political context they are born into, as interpreted by the designer and artists who create the couture of today. I would rather have the diverse, creative and performative couture of today than the highly limiting and strict couture of the pre and post-war era. (Even though I do miss Cristobal Balenciaga!) haha but good points and discussion, the evolution of couture is an interesting topic

    As an Indigenous person I find your commentary insightful. I'm an Indigenous Studies major and our thoughts on this collection are largely aligned. Well done! I sometimes find it challenging to avoid adopting paternalistic attitudes toward Indigenous people who have had less fortunate experiences than me. It is important to remember that Indigenous people can enter into business without people needing to worry about them. It can lead to bias, that could lead to fewer commercial loans, and thus fewer opportunities for Indigenous peoples.

      Totally agree. Approaching this topic was challenging and I definitely didn’t do it perfectly. And of course there will be so many different opinions on this collaboration from within the tribes/communities that were involved. There’s no right or wrong answer but transparency and education I think are the most important thing so people can form their own opinions. I really have no relation to the involved tribes so I was trying to approach it from a non-paternalistic view while also discussing the topic effectively. Thank you for your insight!
