  • This is how Pullo and Vorenus really met and how their journey together has begun.
I am fond of history and particularly in the history of Rome and I share videos about it. Rome (2005) was one the best tv show and also some kind of documentary. I claim no rights of the videos I share

Lots of people like to compare the centurion to the modern day NCO. But the reality is that a centurion is more on the lines of a Lieutenant and even Captain. So, imagine assaulting your own executive officer. You would likely get shot.

Centirion commanded various tactical units. These were centuriae, maniples and cohorts. There are 100-120 people in the centuria, more than 600 people in the cohort. Therefore, yes, the centurion was equivalent to a lieutenant and even a major, so 600 people is a whole battalion. A battalion is usually commanded by a captain or major. No comparison to a non-commissioned officer.

@@iratepirate3896 I wouldn't agree with this statement. Just like any officer, they are not always loved, but Julius Caesar promoted most of his Centurions from the Legionnaire ranks for Valor and Bravery. Unlike modern day Officers, Centurions always fought at the front.

This scene makes me laugh everytime i see it because in Poland there was this once popular anegdote (it did really happen though) about this huge brawl between hooligan firms from two major cities, lets say it was 50vs50 (organised beforehand to be done in a forrest hidden from public as to not disturb anyone), and one firm basically implemented this exact tactic, leaving some men to avoid fighting at first, and then by the end when after 7 or 10 minutes both sides were terribly tired and their group was losing badly, switch the most tired ones for the fresh ones, completely changing the tide of the brawl and ultimately wiping the floor with the other firm.
I can just imagine half braindead hooligans yelling CEASAR! CEASAR! Once they won

He did get a raw deal. Caesar had four Triumphs with his being first. They strangled Vercingetorix with no problem. But after him was Cleopatra's sister and the Romans got upset at the idea of strangling her and got feisty so he spared her. No one really knows much about the triumph he had for his Asia Minor campaign as the whole thing was underwhelming (the campaign and the triumph for it). Then was some little kid who was only there because his father, the king, died. The Romans didn't like the idea of killing the boy and they almost rioted on Caesar, so he let him go and enrolled him in school.

Vercingetorix's army was not like this at all. It was much more on par with the Roman one and after 8 years of fighting the soldiers would not be running at the Roman army screaming. They were highly disciplined and Roman battle tactics were no secret to them. The Romans were afraid that the tribal peoples' would learn from the Roman system and create rival states which is one of Caesar's justifications for his conquest. Eventually that exact thing happened so the Romans were not wrong to fear them.

I think there are two things at play here. First, they likely wanted to contrast the two armies, with Romans being highly organized and well equipped, and Gauls having less armour and having a looser structure, but they went too far. Second, I think what we're seeing here is the very end of the Gallic Wars, probably 50 BC, when the Gauls were thoroughly beaten, and their military only a shadow of its former self. This doesn't match Vercingetorix' surrender, which happened 2 years earlier, but the showrunners probably thought they could get away with a little shift for the sake of narrative.
