  • Well Tally Bally Ho! Here it is!
    This is my review of the new Triumph Speed Triple R.
    You'll see pretty soon what I think of it, but Triumph really have managed to improve everything.
    I hope you enjoy.
    Any questions, feel free to ask in the comments...
    As ever, thank you so much to Herts Triumph for their support. It means an awful lot. Their link is:
    www.hertstriumph.co.uk
    Pip pip!
    * Amendment: In this video I say that it weights 114kgs. I mean 214kgs of course... Thank you to gizzmo84 for spotting this... !
    And that the lever IS adjustable... Whoops!
    Oh and if you get bored during the walk around, the fun start about 9 minutes in...

    A fantastic sport bike for the real world of public roads. So nice to see the engine that is not covered up with a plastic fairing. I'm only 5'-8 and 160 lbs so my Street Triple R is perfect for me, but a bigger guy might be happier with the Speed. Light motorcycles with 100+ hp are brutally fast on public roads and realistically speaking the horsepower wars are stupid considering that a race-track and sophisticated electronics are needed to keep the little rear tire contact patch on the pavement. The 3-cylinder engines also have a flat torque curve and a cool sound at high revs.

      +1 on the 100hp light bike for the road. I used to have a 1999 zx6r and even that old thing was wildly quick on the road. You'd go through a few gears gunning it out of a corner and look down expecting to see 100mph but it reads 130. I can't even imagine how quick the latest crop of super bikes are on the road.

      My 1st big bike was the triumph street triple R 2016 model, i am 5.7 150llb. I found the weight on the street triple mid to top heavy, test rode a 2015 speed triple 1050r , found it much easier to ride. Have now sold the street!!

    I started looking for bikes with my eyes on the Ducati monster 1200 but after months watching videos I got to know the Triumph Speed Triple and first thing I didn’t like was the headlights, second thing that got my attention on a bad way was the mufflers position right under the seat, the frame lines were a positive difference from the Monster in my opinion, as the months passed I started to like more and more the look of the Speed Triple but was never able to pass the headlights looking like a Transformer or praying mantis. So I finally decided to get the Speed Triple and later replace the 2 headlights for 1, in about two or three months I’ll have the money to get one. I always liked the videos that I saw even the bad ones because with them all I could decide which one to get so thanks to all of you youtubers who took the time to go out there and bring all this information.

      You're welcome! It's definitely an excellent bike and if you're able to customise it to your own tastes then every one is a winner!

    WELL worth the wait, Captain! I'm still dearly in love my 2013 R (I'll have had it a year this May) but, my goodness!!, I would be a happy man with this one. I like the fact you can seemingly toggle through all the modes (i.e. fuel range, etc) on the bar instead of having to use the buttons on the display. And the overall finish just looks superb. So much (usable!) power on tap, and as you note, it is SO surprisingly comfortable and easy to ride. And as always, your unbridled enthusiasm when you're having fun is infectious :-). Thanks for the great review, Sir. Cheers.

      Yes you can scroll through the info on the move, just not the settings... They can only be changed when stationary...

    I've got a mini windscreen on my old 955i that blocks off the wind on your body so I'm sure I'd have a piece of plexi cut and pop rivet it on the stock micro fairing. Def toss the stock levers and put the stubby levers on as I have on my 955i.

    Had my very own 2016 Speed Triple Rrrrrrr delivered to my house in Florida this past Saturday. I just wanted to let you know that I lost count of how many times I watched your video while trying to decide if the SpTR was the right bike for me. After 100+ miles the answer is a definite yes!!! Love your videos, keep it up :)

      Enjoy your bike, ride safely, but maybe not so responsibly considering it's a speed triple R! :-)

    Quick point of order captain, the brake lever is adjustable...the little black knob, front of lever pivot end. I've put 4500miles on a 2013 R and having owned 31 bikes over 35 years I thinks it's the best all round, most engaging and best ergos bike of the lot.

    • @CaptainRambunctious
      @CaptainRambunctious  7 років тому

      Yes, i have already made a few amendments in the description to this effect.. An excellent bike. If Triumph hadn't brought out the Thruxton R, I would have definitely got this bike...

  • @erwingerlachduque
    @erwingerlachduque 6 років тому +2

    Hello! Got a TTR, and today I was thinking on switching for this bike. Besides the obvious differences like style and engine, and thinking that you own a TTR, will you make the deal? I know the Thruxton is on a league on its own in terms of the look, sound and concept, but I'm wondering how the speed handles corners comparing with the TTR. I you may share your thoughts on this, it will be great. Regards!

    • @CaptainRambunctious
      @CaptainRambunctious  6 років тому

      No worries Erwin. As you might be aware from previous videos, I was torn between the Thruxton R and the Speed Triple R. The speed is definitely the best motorcycle but not really my style. Also, I value my licence and I couldn't honestly trust myself with that extra performance... I'd be above 80mph far too often. But common sense would dictate that this might not be the same for you, as we all possess different personalities...
      The speed feels lighter in the corners. not Street triple light, but lighter. The body position is different too. More upright, but extremely comfortable even with the standard seat. The sound is very different too. If you haven't owned a triple before, the induction whistle is something you either love or hate but you can grow to love. It took me a while to like it on my street triple, but once you like it, the triple really is an intoxicating engine. Also, there is obviously more top end, only 2000 rpm, but it certainly adds to the experience. The triple is a lovely blend of torque and power. Not as torquey as an equivalent displacement twin, but has more pull than the equivalent 4 cylinder engine...
      My one concern about the speed triple is that initially is was intimidating, then it was just pure fun. That may not sound like a concern, but it may lead me towards the dangerous riding where my talent, for what it is, runs out... Not that I can't have too much fun on my Thruxton, just a different beast...
      So besides the position, and the performance and the looks, not much to differentiate. Both excellent bikes. Maybe the speed is more weather proof? Not sure...
      For me it came down to looks and riding position. For a naked bike, I like to be leant forwards a little bit against the wind so that my position helps with the wind, otherwise I feel a bit like I am holding on to the bars... For town riding, the upright position is better for your wrists and lower back though...
      I hope that this waffle helps in some small way and that I might have at least answered your question in part.
      Thanks for watching and Happy New Year! TBH!

    • @erwingerlachduque
      @erwingerlachduque 6 років тому +1

      Captain Rambunctious Tons of thank's to you Captain. Very detailed arguments. They helped me understanding more about what to expect, when I test the Speed. The reason why I'm considering the switch, is because the TTR whoobles too much when I give full throttle when exiting a curve. Been olaying for a year with the whole suspension, tension, compresion, rebound, etc. But it still there, the feeling of a super light front end, it just doesn't give me confidence. Perhaps I'm riding it a bit far for what was designed for, but it is what it is.
      I own a Tiger too, so besides, at first, hating the engine sound (now in ignoring stage mode), liked far more how I feel into curve on it, rather than in the TTR. It feels much more ready to take the exit of any curve than the TTR. And that Captain, is just something I shouldn't be even writing about it. The TTR is meant to be a better animal for the twisties. To be fair, I blame it on my riding style, it may be the case it just doesn't mix with the geometry / design of the bike. I'm really sad that I'm considering to give it away.
      Anyway, thank's again for your wise comments. Cheers and a Happy nee year to you too!

    • @CaptainRambunctious
      @CaptainRambunctious  6 років тому

      No problem Erwin! It doesn't matter if it's your riding style or not, it doesn't seem like it's working for you!

    I appreciate the review. Fun and informative. This bike goes on my short list of bikes to consider. I especially liked your comment on seating position which is a key factor when I choose a bike. Last bike was a Sprint ST which suited me fine, but I'm keen on a naked this time.

    • @CaptainRambunctious
      @CaptainRambunctious  8 років тому

    Capt you can adjust the brake lever, there is a small black knob fnar fnar, on the outside of the lever blade. If you turn it think there's about 3 settings. It's a little odd that it's not the same adjustment method as the clutch.

    • @CaptainRambunctious
      @CaptainRambunctious  7 років тому +1

      Thank you. Yes, I have already been corrected, and I found it out on my Thruxton too (was the same lever), so have added a comment in the description. But I can't expect people to look there... :-)
      Thanks for the tip though! Feel free to let me know of anything else so I can try to amend it?! :-)

    Excellent and informative review--really enjoyed. I test rode one just before seeing this and agree completely with your impressions about poise, grunt, finish, and comfort-its a great looking and comfy machine. Do wonder why quick shifter and heated grips weren't included for the price (R model) they are asking especially since its main competitor (s1000r) has all of this for similar money and its made in Germany. Bars felt a little buzzy surprisingly and fairly straight out rather than bent back some which I prefer. At least my impression. Oh, and the standard exhaust was fairly quiet which I actually prefer on this type of bigger sport standard. Really liked it though. Relaxing and to my way of thinking a good competitor to the R1200R LC actually since that is another I am considering.

    • @CaptainRambunctious
      @CaptainRambunctious  8 років тому

      +Windy Run Ah, excellent, glad that you agree! The straighter bars are the street fighter stance and are the same on all Speed Triples really, and yes, I agree with you on the quick shifter, but a lot of people don't like them and the only Triumph that they come standard on is the Daytona 675 R which is seen as their sports bike...
      Thanks for watching and for the comment! Really interesting...

    If you only had 1 x choice of an all-rounder between the Street Triple R and the Speed Triple R what would it be & why?

    • @CaptainRambunctious
      @CaptainRambunctious  8 років тому +1

      Speed Triple R. To me it feels more planted. It has a lot more power. It feels to me like a more grown up bike... I loved the yellow one that I had for a week, and this new one is another step up. I also find the Speed more comfortable and the seat doesn't push me into the tank so much, and I have more leg room too...
      Easy for me to answer really... :-)
      Hope that this has helped.

      +Smo It's just so much fun! :-) Obviously not quite as light as the Street or as quick to rev, but you don't need that. All the torque easily makes up for it. You ride it slightly differently, and almost change gear early just to ride that torque...
      Anyway, yes, you do. I would love to see your verdict! After all, I just get seduced by the Triumph badge and single sided swing arm... :-)

      sql-lover In the fact that you almost short shift to get the best acceleration out of it, rather than redline it like I do on the Street Triple. It is also smoother to turn in, so you need to muscle it a bit more than the Street, but then to me it feels safer and more planted than the street triple...
      Does that help?

    Capt As always a cracking review again Sir. It's a damn shame the rider aids and modes weren't available on my 2015 speed triple R. :( Has the new model got a lighter clutch action? I did find the gearbox and clutch were a massive improvement over my 2011 speed triple, on the 2015 I think they added extra dogs or something in the gearbox for better shifting. With over 104 changes in the engine alone on this new model I would expect the gearbox and clutch to be flawless now. No free Arrow cans this year then!

    • @CaptainRambunctious
      @CaptainRambunctious  7 років тому +1

      No, no free arrow cans, but they still sound tremendous with them on... I'd still get the low boy I think... But I do like the look of the rear wheel with the high cans which do not obstruct the view!
      The clutch is a lot lighter and the gears just snick into position like butter... A really lovely machine...
      Thanks for watching and for the kind words and for the excellent comment.

    • @Pocahonkers
      @Pocahonkers 8 років тому +1

      Captain Rambunctious Well that sounds logical, they are really hanging onto their classics. To each his own I guess, but I reckon something like that from Triumph would be rather interesting, like the F3 800 from MV Agusta.

      @CaptainRambunctious  8 років тому

      13i0Hazard666 Oh I'm sure it would be spectacular, but maybe they feel that it wouldn't cut the mustard when there are BMWs with close to 200 bhp in that bracket.

    • @Pocahonkers
      @Pocahonkers 8 років тому +1

      Captain Rambunctious Yeah the Speed Triples engine is amazing, but it would definitely need a redesign to compete with an S1000RR. The S1000R already has 160hp compared to "only" 140hp on the Speed Triple. I'm more than positive that theres room for improvement, I mean ducati managed to get insane amounts of torque out of the 1299 but it's way too expensive. These crazy italians right? ;)

    • @CaptainRambunctious
      @CaptainRambunctious  8 років тому

      13i0Hazard666 It's also the balance of weight with inertia, power and torque with reliability! I'm sure that Triumph could squeeze a LOT more out of the engine, but it would toss itself after 20,000 miles, and that's the reputation that they are still trying to get away from from over 30 years ago!
      Best to stick to grunty reliable and fun machines I reckon is their way of thinking...

    What's your opinion on the red S model? looking to pick one up in the united states with the r spec but the red is just more me. is it a huge downgrade? can I get the cool wheels, belly pan, and ohlins on the S somehow? What do you think of the arrow full exhaust? Thanks for the excellent review!

    • @CaptainRambunctious
      @CaptainRambunctious  8 років тому

      I think that if you can afford the R model, then the upgrades are worth more than the difference in price. You can get the wheels and belly pan on the S, but you would have to 'fork' out for the ohlins separately which in my opinion would be worth getting the R anyway. If the Red is more your thing, see if your dealer can order an R in red, and if not, wait a bit, as every year they bring out new colours...

    I've got one question about those Arrow silencers. I've received mines last week (the EU version I'm afraid...) and even though on the official website they say that the db killers are removable, the dealership told me that they aren't. So how did you managed to take it off? Did you had to remove the CF cover beforehand or there's an easier way? Can you put it back again?
    Thank you in advance and keep up the good work!

    • @CaptainRambunctious
      @CaptainRambunctious  8 років тому +1

      The thruxton's looks suit me and my personality better. I can ride it in the Distinguished Gentleman's ride. I preferred the position.
      I preferred the sound and acceleration of the Speed Triple but felt that it was unnecessary on the roads. I would LOVE both of course, but only allowed one bike at the moment...
      If I wanted to be modern looking and someone who didn't like tradition and the past, then the speed Triple R. But as I love older stuff, but this is with modern bits and pieces, the Thruxton R suits me perfectly. It's the one that stole my heart more than my head...

Also has cruise control and the option to add the touring pack, whilst still keeping the lightweight super-naked feel. Very versatile bike. Yes, I first rode it when it didn't have arrows, then again as I had forgotten a few things when it DID have Arrows on... Hence the editing... :-)

    The one thing and only ONE thing I hate about these triples, is that whistling sound making its way out every time you throttle the beast! It takes away from its badass demeanor in my opinion. It's like that commercial with this in great muscular shape dude approaching these 2 girls on the beach then opens his mouth to holla at them and his voice sounds like that of a 10 year old boy almost reaching puberty. Get what I'm saying? Alrighty thaaaan!!

      @jessesilver 8 років тому

      +Vladimator Totally understand that POV. FYI, I have a street triple and LOVE the sound... the whistle is on top of a throaty grunt (if you push it) and it's pretty intoxicating.

      @CaptainRambunctious  8 років тому

      +Vladimator I see your point of view, and I thought the same until I owned a Street Triple. After a while, that induction noise adds to it and it becomes a secondary roar to the pipes that just seems to harmonise now in my head... I must have got used to it because now I love it!
      But yes, I remember not liking that as well... When I got my Tiger, I finally thought, ah, a triple again, excellent, I get that induction howl back! :-)

    Great review as always, but if you have an inside leg any less than 32" don't bother.

    • @CaptainRambunctious
      @CaptainRambunctious  8 років тому

      Really? Why not? A friend of mine just bought one and has an inside leg of 29"... I don't see the issue?

      @aliservan7188 8 років тому +1

      Captain Rambunctious Maybe I was a little unfair and, well, bitter. I have a 28" inside leg and really struggled to keep it upright when stopped. I was informed that it couldn't be lowered any more so my only real option then became the Ducati 821 which is still an amazing bike but not a Triumph. I'm almost 50 so I demand to be bitter dammit!

    • @CaptainRambunctious
      @CaptainRambunctious  8 років тому +1

      ali Servan Ah, I see. I wasn't sure if you were talking about seat height or the position of the pegs...
      You can lower it another 5cms with a different dogbone link in the lower of the rear suspension and then lower the forks slightly. Also, they now do a lower seat too...
      It's worth waiting for when all the after market stuff comes out about 6 months after the launch to see what other design houses are doing for the bikes... I myself am really looking forward to what other companies are doing for my new Thruxton R... It's always worth waiting a few months...

      +Captain Rambunctious is 6'6 and 37 inch inseam a big stretch for it?

    • @CaptainRambunctious
      @CaptainRambunctious  8 років тому

      Andrew M I think that as long as you have no outstanding leg injuries, you should be fine. It isn't cramped, and I suppose to you it would just feel more like a sports bike?

    can i take the scoop and headlights off and slap on a circular one?

    • @CaptainRambunctious
      @CaptainRambunctious  8 років тому

      You could on the old ones but not sure about this one because the ecu and electrics are contained in the clocks... I'm afraid it would be something to ask Triumph... I doubt a dealer would know either...

    • @Goshujinsama01

      +Biggest Dickus ah, well looks are such a subjective thing... Personally, these looks have grown on me over the last few years and this newer rounded version really appeals, so maybe give it time? But for a bike like this, and as costly as this, I'd have thought that you would need to like all of it... If you owned it would you come to love it?
