Bodycam Shows Police Shoot Man Who Pointed a Cane at Officers, Mistaken For a Gun

- The Harford County Sheriff's Department in Maryland released bodycam footage showing officers shooting a man who allegedly pointed a long object at them, which was later determined to be a cane, on April 23, 2022 in Forest Hill. Officers responded to a call about an allegedly armed suicidal man in a shopping center parking lot. When officers confronted the man, he attempted to flee so they shot out his tires. After a long standoff, the man allegedly pointed the long object at the officers, prompting them to shoot. One officer can be heard shouting, "it's a cane, it's a cane," before officers opened fire. The suspect succumbed to his injuries shortly after the incident.

This lead officer was well aware of his surroundings and strategic with his plans. Not sure how he knew it was a cane but others didn't. Sad.
You're talking about the guy with the shotgun who's perspective we're watching right? I thought it was strange how he's the one who was calling out that it was a cane and then you can clearly hear him shooting and then racking his shotgun twice AFTER saying it was a cane lol. So that means even the dude who said it was a cane was shooting so i think it was more of a "if one shoots, then everybody's shooting" scenario than a "mistake", which is just a trash thing to train officers to do tbh.
@@thekamotodragon yeah or since he can’t see he assumed that another officer saw a gun
@@thekamotodragon ye i thought that top, he does it twice saying about the cane, then pumps the guy with at least 2 slugs.

@@thekamotodragon Yes but there are such things as "Cane Guns" so he is still possibly a threat by pointing it at the officers. Although I doubt that thought even went through the cop's mind and he just wanted in on the action so he can get his paid leave while they investigate the shooting. In my opinion that was a bad shoot on his part and he should be charged for it. The others may or may not have known it was a cane.

What is unsafe is the man going on a high speed chase at least by the chase starts the tires well be going flat he will not go to far and if you hit the radiator silver Good times it will kill the truck.
This guy was on a mission. He felt he had absolutely nothing to lose. When you are at that point in your head, nothing is going to stop your determination.
It's kinda sad really.
It's very sad. For everyone. People think the police are corrupt and looking for a fight and want to kill somebody everyday when just the opposite is true. I don't hide the fact that I'm an ex cop. Sometimes you're forced into a situation where you have to do what you don't want to do. He set in motion what happened once he slammed into the patrol car and went straight at the deputy. I'm disabled now and I walk with a cane. A cane can look like a rifle or shotgun quite easily. It didn't have to be this way.
He wasn’t necessarily on a mission. Maybe he just skipped his meds.
Is that Sushi place any good?
@@jsmith1561 nope
This cop were watching POV from did an amazing job. He was almost run over and still kept calm enough to identify the cane and tell the other officers who had tunnel vision.

@Joel Alaman Jr Yes, really. He did his job. The others had tunnel vision and once one cop shoots they all shoot. But he did try to stop them.
@@PokeMyBalls it's a very difficult situation, while the cops who shot could do better, you also can't completely blame them. tension runs high. The fact they were even able to handle themselves in that situation to the degree that they did is commendable, but in a standoff like that, one cop may see the cane, but there is no guarantee that the other cops can. By the time he says he sees a cane, the guy could have pulled a gun and opened fire, possibly someone else could have been killed. So each cop there had to make a split second decision, risk the man's life? risk their colleague's life? They're all in danger and there is a very real chance no one is coming out on top. The cops that shot made the wrong call, but it wasn't a bad call. and while I wouldn't go as far as to say that they were "in the wrong" given the circumstances. The torment they will feel for taking another man's life in pursuance of "protect and serve" will likely last the rest of their lives. I feel for not just the man who was clearly hurting and lost his life, but I feel for the cops involved as well.

Your right, from the title, I expected it to be a bad shoot. I don't think it is.
“Framing”
Something honest non-bias creators should avoid.
It is bad to shoot someone after someone tells you it's a cane. It's worse to still be shooting them more after they have told you it's a cane 3 or 4 times.
Secondly it’s illegal to shoot at a fleeing suspect even if it’s to disable his vehicle he shot at that tire before the vehicle is in motion towards him so it’s not self-defense.
This title is a bit misleading, though not untrue. Made it seem like the police were at fault and clearly this guy was going out that day. I would have felt bad for him if he didn't almost run over the officer. Once that happened I didn't care anymore. I hate that he forced this upon someone else too

Tried??? This was a weak attempt at best. I'm a Marine Gulf War Vet and I can't count the number of times I have been in this exact situation and we DIDN"T kill the target. Cops are poorly trained when It comes to weapons and confrontations. This guy did not have to get shot. Even if he had a gun, which he didn't, he could still have been taken into custody. I have done it dozens of times against armed suspects. The difference was my training! Most cops are scared so they shoot to kill, in almost all cases. This alone is the biggest reason most of them should have never become police officers!

@@RMcCoy-fb4rs I am specifically speaking about the moments right before they shot this guy. The officers had the luxury of 100% cover. They were in no real danger of being shot by this guy, even if he had a gun in his hand, (which he didn't). If properly trained, from a position of cover, you can shoot to disarm, which Is what I would have chosen but only after a weapon was pointed in my direction. This is obviously either not taught at the police academy or pretty much every cop has chosen to ignore it. I would bet my last $$$ that the first rounds to hit this guy were center mass or head shots.
@@dcg590 First of all, you're not in danger, standing behind a police cruiser with 10 of your buddy's also standing behind theirs, weapons locked in on 1 target. Police are trained by a doctrine that is comprised of the beliefs and techniques of one individual. It is this individuals belief that threats should be eliminated with shots to center mass and or the head. And that is what the police do. @@carriematthews7991 Social media makes people say things huh?!
Honestly can't fault the officers for this one in my opinion, the information they were told is that there was an armed mentally unstable man, he tried to run officers over, crashed into a vehicle intentional and then threatened the officers pretending his cane was a firearm. The police did pretty much everything they could to stop him, even tried disabling the vehicle and talking him down for 7 minutes before he decided to point the cane around like a rifle
Yes, you absolutely can because they messed up. It was a cane. If you can’t tell the difference between a gun and a cane you shouldn’t be a cop. Too many are trigger happy cowards. ACAB
Agreed.
These cops walk away free of any charges after murdering someone
HE TRIED TO RUN THE FIRST DUDE OVER!
I'm not sure who needs to hear this but it is NEVER a good idea to point anything a cop when guns are pointed at you...
Agree 100%
Unless you're suicidal like the guy in the video and you want to die so yeah it can be a good idea
As simple as that.
I don't think it mattered to that guy, I think he wanted to go out like that.
You would think that would be common sense but I guess having sense is rare these days with some people.
How many times do you need to be told to put your hands up
Me probably 8 I'm hard of hearing
Same number of times they have to tell "stop shooting"
"Its a cane. Its a cane. Its a cane."
In all fairness, the man was suicidal. And in the US, calling 911 for a mental health crisis has become the Door Dash of homocide.
How many times do you need to be told it's a cane?
@@thenightingale7405 none, if you think it's a cane, but I think it's a gun, I'm taking the shot. I trust my eyes more than yours.
That cop sounds like a psychopath shouting hands up
His initial actions and language sealed this. He got what he wanted , a show for his cellphone/ significant other--and death.
The title of this video gives the impression that a man was shot for simply "pointing a cane" at someone. Unfortunately this is how the news portrays these events.
Um, he did and he was. Did you watch a different video?
Sure one officer realized it -- but at least three others including what sounded like a rifle opened up.
That’s literally what happened?
Even if he simply pointed a cane, I mean thats a pretty understandable reason to light him up if you cant tell what it is and youre in an armed standoff with him.
@@nspring06 well, that reasoning wouldn't fly for any private citizen. It shouldn't fly for public officials who are trained and held to a higher standard.
@Thecarkid 11 I hope you don't carry and if you do I hope nothing like the above takes place. They'll eat you alive friend. It's pretty crazy what innocent, law abiding men and women have been convicted for while just defending themselves and their families.
(I'm not being a peckerhead either about the "I hope" stuff. I really do mean it.)
All I can say is that was a really difficult situation to manage.
or maybe ur gut knows cops do this too easy and too often to pretend "these are reallly difficult situations to manage"
modern adrenaline junkie cops specialize in creating these situations in the first place
no youre right, they did the right thing
I know man I had to wait forever to see the kill shot. I don't know how I managed to sit through the whole video because the other part was boring 😆
@@SuperCrazyPsycho731 maybe when its your turn, they'll get around to it a little faster, eh
At the very beginning of this video the officer fired his weapon. WHY? What a good training video on what not to do.
To disable the vehicle to avoid another 2 hour pursuit with an armed man. I'm not saying it is the best idea but he did disable the tire at least.
"hmm this man holding a stick too thin to be firearm didn't fire any shots at all. Whats that? it *is* in fact a cane and not a weapon? Welp boys, better turn him to swiss cheese" absolutely pathetic
This man was done living for whatever reason. Sad reality, but he knew the outcome.
Relax
@@mrpoopybutthole6202 am relaxed thanks
Yeah, because the cops were sadistic. With cops like this in your neighborhood better turn into a vigilante.
He knew the outcome alright. He knew the cops would just love to get out their guns and escalate. Video is proving this time and again now-a-days.
This is the first time in a long time I've seen an officer shoot at tires
These robocops are out of control. They couldn't wait to shoot somebody.
“Help”🙄
The whole time they are waiting on "someone with less lethal", I'm just wondering why doesn't every single unit that's out on the roads, have less lethal in the car? So many videos I've seen where the officers are trying to find someone with less lethal, and the person ends up dead. If they can hand every cop a pistol to carry at all times, which is fine it can absolutely be necessary, they can absolutely carry less lethal options as well.
why else, because they enjoy murdering anyone they have a chance to open fire on, look at the POS who was giving him the verbal commands. You can tell by his voice he thinks he is entitled and is annoyed he has to do his job. That being said, there should be several officers being charged with murder for killing this innocent man.
Technically they were waiting for long range less lethal but I agree.
@@Negotiator007 that’s not even close he had control of the situation they knew the guy they didn’t want to kill him they wanted him to comply he was angry that the man wouldn’t just listen. you are entitled and ignorant if anything, thinking this man wasn’t doing his job correctly if his team listened they wouldn’t have killed the man
Money. It cost a lot of money for armaments, training with them, ammo and upkeep. Especially with the whole "Defunding" movement thing that happened. They were already underfunded, which was/is why there are so many training and armament issues as it is.
@@yungswimmer9554 no sense arguing with someone who is only watching the video for confirmation bias instead of having an open mind and thinking for themselves.
The guy who shouted cane right before the officers opened fire also appeared to discharge his shotgun a number of times. Why would he do that knowing it was a cane?
I said the same thing
Perhaps a moment of self-doubt? Shots were heard from his comrades, and in turn, he fired to with the idea being that maybe he made a mistake and the other officers identified the so called "cane" as an actual gun and so they shot first and he followed up in response. Just my guess.
he stated their is guns in the car it was known but he knew that at that moment it was a cane
It's a cult. And their lives are more valuable than the citizens life. So taking every measure to make sure this ends peacefully isn't something their gunna do.

Shooting an unarmed man is part of the american dream
This is probably the lightest use of force ever, instead of shooting the driver he shot the tyres to attempt to disable the vehicle, he really didn't want to shoot him.

The main cop did everything 100% by the book. The others, however, did not. He even yelled to them before the shots rang out "it's a cane, it's a cane!" boom boom

If it’s a phone, “it’s a gun”, if it’s a cane, “it’s a gun”, if it’s a set of keys, “it’s a gun”, if it’s a wallet, “it’s a gun”, it’s always a gun because these police officers are so afraid even though they have body armor, guns, pepper spray and a taser.

He was really saying, "this guy deserves to die" in code.
Goof balls always lie, exaggeration & incite a situation.
It gets so annoying when you watch videos where they claim the guy tried running them over and it’s not even close. There was a video where literally 2 out of the 3 body cams showed the man was just trying to flee and the guys turned him into Swiss cheese and claimed he was trying to run them over. It’s just ridiculous
If u watch the video you will see the cop was an inch away from the truck, so yes. The suspect did indeed try to run over the cop

Cops are assassins for the state.
I think some of those officers just wanted to kill someone that day
You are obviously missing alot. In this situation, they knew he had guns and officers get killedc every day because they hesitate.
The guy should've just put his hands up and not reach something because cops can get killed because of people deceiving them 😬
So, for a cop, if one of your officers is firing at a suspect and you don’t have a clear perfect visual of their hands then you can assume one of the other cops saw a gun or saw a direct threat to human life. You have to trust in your fellow officers, even though it can sometimes lead to human error.
Hats off to the lead officer. Such a tragic outcome but we really need more people like him to prevent these terrible situations in America
Are you kidding? In a place where everyone has guns, a cane gun is a real possibility. Shooting him dead was a good call for the safety of everybody else
You mean the lead officer who unloaded is gun at a person... in a vehicle... in a retail area.
Uh....huh.
Couldnt agree more with Tyler
@@darc8221 He also shouted cane, then fired off 2 shots because everyone else fired.
Why does a bodycam always make the scene rougher look than it is.
Cover, concealment, suppression, teamwork. That is what we were trained in the army. Cops have got to stop standing out in the open and then feeling the need to shoot when they think they see a threat. If you are behind cover, you have time to assess what is really going on.
Didnt y'all also shoot a van full of injured, almost killing or disabling 2 toddlers with an apache because a camera looked like a gun from a hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of camera equipment? Didnt seem like they where a threat, picking up there own deceased and injured and that apache shot them with the auto canon, and they didnt even care, quote one of the Apache crew "shouldn't have let kids in the warzone"
Also to add to this, the people outside the van including the children father all died to that heartless apache pilot
Yeah, they’re focused on nothing but getting cuffs on and preventing chance of escape. The only time they really consider good cover is during barricaded standoffs. And then a tactical team usually takes over anyway.
@@fubodubo2178 isolated incident.
If you are in the military you also know that a car door is not a cover to be protected from bullets of any gun. So the police didnt really have a "cover!. Best regards a Cpt...
We need to see the full video like the minutes before the beginning of this video. From what I saw, the guy was using his phone but ran from the cop?
After smashing a cop car behind him. He showed aggression. He wanted suic/by cop. He got what he wanted in the end.
Read the description. It tells you everything.
This is what information you got off the video? lol geesh.
3:00 everyone is forced to be hyperfocused, and its a real skill: this officer has to yell (& they yell efficiently because they have to be hyperfocused on so much information at once) which also helps surveillance be even more accurate and hes also securing everyone else with dispatch
so amazing how including dispatch they are all holding so much information relating to the moment in their minds
And yes how he lets the other officers know about the cane
The fact that this officer did everything to give the suspect another chance and not end his life, he even almost got ran over trying to shoot the suspects tires and not the suspect himself.
He did a terrible job. But by US standards, that's considered outstanding.

Can’t they use a loud speaker and calmly give directives? BSo many of these videos show cops hysterically screaming and losing their voice.
Screaming or yelling at someone is supposed to show authority. Much like the way a drill sergeant screams at recruits. It might be just me, but even if I was trying to commit suic. (which he was) I'd be scared frozen when they're yelling I'd just do what they ask.
