I’ve heard before that racists and other bigots can be the nicest people you’d ever meet, as long as you aren’t part of the groups they hate. This seems to support that notion. Bigots can be kind and sweet people, but only if you aren’t black or trans or gay or asian or any other myriad of things.

They can be polite and nice in person and as long as you don't challenge their views, but they are not *kind*, kindness is something else and they don't usually meet that definition.
In my experience this is true. I have family members that are super nice unless you're LGBT, not white, not a Christian, or left wing. They can be total jerks when it comes to groups they hate especially in private lol

Unfortunately I’m sure a lot of these guys definitely hold their beliefs back. I had an ex bf who was ultra conservative but I had no idea until like four months into the relationship. He gave me no signs that he thought that way and he knew full well that I am the complete opposite. They keep their cards close to their chest until you’re far enough in that they can slowly reveal them and get you progressively used to it. Like the frog in a pot of boiling water. It honestly just shows how manipulative they really are.
This bit, especially when they’re 30+, they’ve learned that women have learned how dangerous they can be/how people with those beliefs tend to dehumanize non-men and devalue those beliefs over time

TBH, a lot of people scream on social media loudly. I'm liberal, but I grew up conservative. And, I've dated a conservative man in the past when living in Wyoming. I've noticed, growing up and in dating in college in Wyoming, a lot of people aren't strong in their beliefs. The loudest groups, on both left and right, aren't typically the norm for the rest of the group in their day to day life. As well, a LOT of people are willing to shout extreme group think things online for clout but rarely are brave enough to hold to them IRL.
Though, personally, it is helpful when people get toxic cuz then I know who to block on those social apps cuz even if they don't hold to their comment IRL they still felt them on some level and that is enough for me to step back.
I think they say whatever will get them group points on twitter and whatever will get them laid on dating apps

Men do this all the time as well, but you don't see women using the report button (something reserved for rule breaking and harassment). It's not harassment that someone doesn't like you after further review, just unmatch.
I dated a "Southern Gentlemen" ultra conservative Christian man when I was in undergrad. They 100% were doing what they had to do to get into your pants. My ex didn't let on about his "views" until we had been dating for a while, knowing full and well how proud I was to be going to college. First he started with the subtle shaming of my body (despite me being 150 lb lighter than him...). Then he started telling me things like I didn't need my degree because I'd be a mom. He knew when we started our relationship I didn't want kids. When guilting me and shaming me to quit school and get pregnant didn't work he became physically abusive with me.

I'm not surprised actually. They are absolutely capable of acting normal and like a typical 21st century American when needed. Many have jobs and are very nice, very friendly and seem pretty darn cool moving about in the world. But where we differ is they then go home and become very different people. It's bizarre. Most live this strange double existence. I've ended friendships because of this tendency: smile in my face, hug me, act like you're there for me, then go home and be a fascist and post online and give their vote to my people's "mass deportation" or some nonsense. Human insecurity is wild.

I also once had a long chat with a right wing voter from my country.
The guy was actually... pretty chill. Like, environmentally concious, LGBT friendly, he did use the term Ladyboy once but otherwise there were no red flags.
We chatted about how politics could affect the environment, like more public transportation makes sense in the city, but on the countryside it could probably be more damaging to the environment as there aren't that many people in need of it, transportation should be more flexible there.
We also talked about hypocricy on both sides, it was a genuinely interesting and civil chat.
It did feel a bit weird to learn that there were genuinely reasonable people on the other side.

I dont know, at 42 years old currently, having grown up in a conservative household, and only realizing how bad that brain rot is in my mid 20s, I can't hold out too much compassion for these people. So many of them are just awful, hateful, spiteful beings. I'm a very empathetic person, but how do you feel for those who don't feel anything but hate?

As a queer christian I know not all christian guys do that or care, but yes, it is a thing in more extreme circles

The quick push to move to another platform or meet up to me suggests the app is unreliable. I'll admit I am often like that if I enjoy talking to someone on some apps because accounts get deactivated or the system just acts up.
Could also be that notifications just suck or they do all their socializing elsewhere.
It makes me so sad how capable of being nice they are. When they either don't know that the other person has a trait that they'd dislike or when they do know but are too down bad to care, they can be so sweet and perfectly wonderful to talk to. They have the ability to be nice, and some perhaps are truly pleasant at heart, but when faced with someone just a little bit too different from themselves, they choose not to be. They choose hate. And that's just so sad to me.

I‘m only a casual dating apps user but I honestly thought the same thing🙈 I wonder if the reason for that could have less to do with their political views and more with how attracted they are to the person they are messaging. this was such a cute and fun video to watch!! i'm a leftist that also deeply believes in empathy and education, and the more i interact with the left the more i find that it's a take that not many others share. i come from a conservative family so i see up close that conservatives are people too and often they think that way because of past wounds (my family is polish and grew up under a really damaging communist regime whilst still suffering the consequences of the previous nazi occupation... so i get them to an extent). sometimes all they need is a bit of education to de-radicalize them (although yes i agree that there are people who absolutely need to be stopped lol). i think it's super refreshing to see other leftists treat regular conservatives as human beings.

I'm not saying to just let bigoted opinions fly, but when you start attacking people's opinions they only double down. It's only by trying to understand the other person's opinion, however much you disagree with them or however ridiculous it is, that you can find any common ground or stand any chance of changing their mind. Only when you can present a perfect steelman argument back to someone of what they think, can you point out flaws with it, if you don't fully understand what they think they'll never listen to what you have to say about it. Never let someone know if you think what they think is ridiculous, abhorrent, whatever, because if you do they'll never listen to you. If you want an even slightly productive or pleasant conversation, you've got to at least pretend to respect their opinions and understand where they're coming from. I’m kind of not surprised at the guys you met. Certain things in my life have put me in contact with more conservative straight men than I wish, and they have a real “I think people just need to get over their differences and get along!” thing a lot of the time because otherwise they would never date. The getting over and getting along is always the work of the woman, of course. These are people who would say “going out to be with your drag queen clients babe? Well I’ll miss you when I’m in heaven and you’re in hell!” and then think that’s a perfectly hilarious joke, why don’t you have a sense of humor? being from kentucky (born and raised 😌✨) i'm not at all surprised by these interactions you had. i think it's why i'm so interested in conversation-based activism and making connections "across the aisle" (think: parents circle families forum, that sort of thing), bc i've had so many genuinely good friendships with conservatives in my time. i've been changed by those relationships (for instance my friend from a cop family taught me a lot about problems small town cops go through, like a lack of mental health support and the fact that many are pushed into police work bc they're veterans who are having trouble assimilating, or they're just in a town that doesn't have many other steady jobs) and i've changed people through those relationships too (shoutout to the friend i had who was a neo nazi when we met, and last time we talked now they're a nonbinary polypan anarchist). seeing the humanity in those around us is so important to me
