Messmer really portrays a melancholic acceptance. He's not like margit who was deeply ashamed of himself or mogh who embraced it. He sounds confused at first questioning the contradiction of a tarnished being chosen for lord but, then he repeats the same mantra that has turned his knights into zealots. He recenters himself and focuses on his purpose. He's probably had a lot pent up emotions about the whole situation and burying them in his "work". The bitterness he felt only comes out at the end when he curses his mother with his dying breath. He's more angry at her than the person who just killed him.
I find it interesting that he's initial reaction to meeting us is just him questioning why marika is tasking Tarnished to become lords why his (mesmer's) literal job is killing people who can't see the light/grace.
Also, he wasn't even participating in Shattering and probably would have rolled with any other lord anyway (sans Rykard). But Marika forced him to stay there because he is 'lightless' and then she allowed the Tarnished to make a bid for lordship. Really, that must be quite a burn
@JMAization that's not deathblight. Deathblight is consist of deepdark branch twisted and sproud fly and maggot from the flesh of its victim. Messmer eye hole contain something diffirent from deathblight. If you watch the video from BonfireVN, you will see that it is snake, twisted and tangle. Probadly Messmer's body is being replace or grow or being eaten alive by the very snake that growing in his body, it like a den of snake. In his phase 2 we see that his body have many open wound, in there it's not flesh, but something tangle as if many snake stay in there. Messmer probadly always in constant agony because the snake is eating him away.
Man just wants to be better than the monster people see him as, maybe even retire. But fate keeps saying, "Look, Messmer, there's more people stripped of the grace of gold over there. Go kill them, as your mother ordered."
@ TheEnergizingbunny He is one of the people stripped of the grace of gold. In his phase 2 cutscene dialogue, I’m pretty sure the “lord devoid of light” is him. Marika removed one of his eyes and gave him the golden one to seal away the abyssal serpent as per the remembrance text. His phase 2 transition is him rejecting the grace of gold and embracing who he actually is. He even goes as far as to curse Marika upon dying. The only confusing thing to me is why he’s in the Land of Shadow. His remembrance says he was put there by Marika to keep him secret due to being bereft of gold, but everything else says he went there to wage war with Miquella who had fully defected from the Golden Order to try and ascend to godhood.
@@ДмитрийТарасов-и8фexactly why he said one of the best and idk it kinda rivals it. I love ludwig so much snd his second phase cutscene is definitely better even tho messmers is great
I think this one fits better his actual mood, given hes been abandoned by Merika in the land of shadow. He was also bereft of light and obliged to stay there. While on the trailer the delivery was more dramatic because you know, its a trailer xd
@@boid9761honestly when you really look at his whole character and what his role is, it makes sense that the take they went with ingame sounds more tired
Having watched this scene several times now, I enjoy this delivery quite a lot. But the jarring difference between the tone in the trailer vs the actual game definitely took me out of the moment the first time
i think it fits better in the game because of the heartbreak and frustration that you can hear in his voice. he is sad that he has been hoping for his mother, queen marika, to return but his pleas fall on deaf ears. he is just so tired... both physically and mentally tired of his constant suffering. he is but another victim of queen marika and her schemes, another child who was abandoned, another pawn in marika's sick, self-motivated schemes. it illustrates a whole other side of messmer being introduced. in the trailers, he is seen as this evil and formidable opponent. word in the land of shadow says he is a dastard. but his descriptions on his armor and his remembrances in the game? everything he did was on behalf of queen marika, messmer taking all of the hits for her. "direct thy maledictions, thine ire, and thy grief towards me alone." these lines basically encapsulate all of that pain, in my personal opinion.
Depends really on how old he is, if he is from before Godfrey Became Elden lord, then he would need some way to find things out, but if he is another Radagon/Marika spawn like Malenia and Miquella, then he would be aware of tarnished considering they started existing as soon as Marika kicked Godfrey out of the lands between.
@@Akrilloth One item connected to commander Gaius tells us that he and Messmer were like big brothers to Radahn. Which means he was alive when the Tarnished were already banished, but was older than Radagon's children with Rennala. Seeing that one Item seems to insinuate that Melina's his younger sister, and Melina is probably the Gloam eyed queen, AND Messmer has a cursed serpent sealed inside him... *sigh* aaaaaaand serpents were already reviled in Godfrey's era, hence the Gladiator helmet, my theory is that he alongside Melina were Marika's first children. hes honestly closer to a straight up satan figure on purpose in-world, like if you read his armor hes basically supposed to be someone for the hornsent to focus their hatred and fear on so they arent a problem for marika
1:33 When he transforms you can hear the betrayal in his voice. Marika has basically abandoned him at this point, he stayed loyal but it was all for nothing. His purpose now meaningless.
I like how he sounds genuinely confused about us being a Tarnished He expected some powerful foe, maybe one of his brethren, given the fact the "intruder" is a Lord from his POV, only to meet a "lowly" Tarnished lmao
i love that because of his expression and camera distance it just looks like a dragon eye until you get the close up shot and see the arch and realize the pupil is marika's symbol
