My 66 was born in 1955, bigger spring was broken, a spring expert made a new one for me. With your unique instructions, everything is fine now. Thank you.

These are invaluable videos and such enriching content. I'd like you to know that it is precisely these intricate part assembly and cleaning that is very useful to anyone restoring these beautiful machines. They are heirloom pieces and should be back in use. I took apart the bobbin winder to a 1957 Universal/Dressmaker machine and could not remember where the springs went back in! This has helped a lot even if the machines are different.
Please remember to have very good lighting, preferably LED white light not incandescent bulbs so camera does not have yellow light. Bring camera in for closeups so we see how these springs are snugly fit inside the parts. All the parts are black so lighting needs to increase.
What is an 'eccentric screw'? From my research, it looks like a screw where the shaft/stem is off center. Pressing with clamping screws with eccentric head enables mounting accuracy to be maintained by suppressing the warping and misalignment caused by long-term use. Is this correct?
You are painting the machine? What fun! Are you powder coating or using acrylics, oil enamels? If using car paint you have so many choices like color shift, pearlescent, metallics, etc. KP Pigments are some of the best powdered pigments. Bear in mind, if you don't wish to spray them, and want a satin finish not gloss, you can brush paint with Durabak, a very hard moisture-cured polyurethane bedliner paint that is super durable. Good for all sorts of materials. If you are spraying it with spray cans, then know that you can buy a very high artist quality acrylic paint with NC Lacquer base called Montana Gold. The solvent and cleanup is with Acetone not Mineral Spirits. The colors are very UV resistant and superb. Finishes matte or gloss. I would finish off with a clear oil based Polyurethane sealer coat or car gel coat paint for high gloss. Poly comes in satin, semi, or high gloss and is more durable. You will have great results. If bare metal, etch with phosphoric acid, use a primer coat oil enamel spray, then a white primer, then Montana Gold color coats, then Poly. Montana has a beautiful spray head, very fine. You can buy at Jerrys Art-o-rama or Blicks. I sprayed a bird feeder tray and it is in full sun for 2 yrs and no fading. Unbelievable.
Thank you for no music, what joy! Subscribed.

I tried to clean and reassemble a 66 bobbin winder a while back, lost a spring, bought another from ebay, but never could get it to go back in and finally wound up breaking it. (The spring, not the winder thankfully.) I gave up on that one eventually and just put the winder back on the machine sans spring. So I was anxious about trying it again with a 99K I picked up recently. Yesterday I found your video and followed along with it step by step, and got it right first try! Your demonstrations and directions were clear and very helpful. Thank you so much!!!

@@BobFowlerWorkshop They have different parts! I took one apart a few months ago and it was on a 99, but the one I was working on today had several different parts where the follower and the pulley bracket attach to the machine. The 99 belt guard has a recess on the inside where they attach inside it, but the 66 has a totally level inner side, and the screws go in on the outside. Maybe it's an age difference? Either way, You helped me solve the problem! :)

Wonderful video! I just received a Singer 66 Redeye from my father-in-law that was in very poor shape. I have never done any conservation work so I was really unsure how to take apart, clean and reassemble the bobbin winder. I played your video many times and was successfully able to do it myself. (Those springs were a bit fussy :) ) Thank you very much for making this video and explaining clearly and slowly what you were doing as you went along.

Is it possible to take the winder part - the part that spins against the belt or wheel and holds the bobbin - apart and swap it from a Singer 15 to Singer 66? For some reason, I've managed to buy Singer 15 winders TWICE on Ebay (sketchy sellers, unclear pictures, way too much hope) and I'm just needing to swap it out so the pin location changes and will fit the Singer 66 bobbins. Thank you!

Great video. Most helpful especially with all the springs to reposition. We’re about to strip down and repaint a 99K in a not black colour. How would you tackle the part that has the bobbin winder axle in it, the bobbin tyre wheel part? Would you tidy it up as black and not repaint that part? Hopefully you be doing a video of the repaint job. Thanks for the great videos.

Oof! I just put one of these together again (after spending my free time over the last few days (yes - days!) cleaning and polishing it all as best I possibly could. Getting in the last pivot screw for the follower was an ordeal. It needed my hubby and Chapman wrenchy-handle thingy to loosen it when we took it off but Oh! My! Goodness! Getting it back on was just as tight and difficult.
I slipped at one point and had to remove it, polish out a wee scratch in the follower and roughness in the slot of the screw. All nice shiny and spiffing again and on the next try - being _so_much_more_careful_ - I got it in. Now it looks great and all is working. And I know why that screw was so chowdered up in in the first place!
I got the threads on the pivot screw and screw-hole (is there a proper name for that?) as clean as a whistle and well-oiled so why it was so, so, so tight I don't know. Is that normal for these? You seemed to have no exceptional trouble screwing it back in. Fiddly with the spring yes - but there was no sign of you reaching for "leverage is your friend" assistance to get it seated all the way in.

    • @BobFowlerWorkshop

"You seemed to have no exceptional trouble screwing it back in" - Only because I have done so many of these, I can do them in my sleep, my dear, I can do them in my sleep... :-) Back in the late 1980's when my wife was teaching me how to repair clarinets, I was struggling to seat pads accurately. She told me the same thing I'm going to tell you - "It get's easy after the 5000th time you do it!"

Hey Bob, thanks for the great videos. I have a circa 1913 66 treadle with a broken bobbin winder (missing spring) that I hope to fix. The winder does not have a rubber wheel, instead it has a groove where the treadle belt goes. Is this correct, or is it just missing? I have researched this, and it seems some machines where made this way? Thanks for any advice.

To clean and polish screws, I chuck them into our bench motor and while the motor is running, use foam-cored nail files in various grits from 220 to 12000 to remove damage to the slots and polish the heads to a mirror finish. As for polishing the other hard parts, I use a variety of cloth buffing wheels and hard felt polishing points with either a yellow or white polishing compound. Email me at argosybob@gmail.com and I can give you more information.

    • @BobFowlerWorkshop
      @BobFowlerWorkshop  2 роки тому +1

I wouldn't. Vinegar is acetic acid, and soaking these parts in acid won't do the plating much good (nor any bare steel, for that matter). You're much better off using hot water and a degreaser like Dawn dish soap and a nylon scrub brush to get off the nasty stuff, then use your favorite metal polish to shine it up. Ju8st make sure you rinse in hot water and dry thoroughly. I use compressed air to blow them dry.
