Elvis’s voice matured over the years. He was 21 when he sang Jailhouse Rock and in his mid 30’s when he sang In the Ghetto. He was born into extreme poverty and never forgot the struggles of his family’s poverty.

Answering some of your really good questions. 1. Elvis grew up in extreme poverty in Tupelo Mississippi where he lived very close by the impoverished black community known as Shake Rag. He moved to Memphis when he was 14 and lived in the projects until he started his singing career. 2. Elvis was inly 19 when he started recording at Sun Studios in Memphis and was only 21/22 when he recorded Hound Dog (1956) and Jailhouse Rock (1957). He had a natural 2 1/2 octave range. As he matured he explored more and more ways to use his vocal instrument. Elvis, while not a song writer, was a master song interpreter as he so ably demonstrated when he recorded In The Ghetto, where is baritone added the darkness to the lyrics. 3. Elvis never really accepted the title King of Rock n Roll. He personally said that the title belonged to Fats Domino. Also, Elvis was always very quick to point out he didn’t start rock n roll, that it was there before he came along. It is others that keep insisting on calling him the king of R’n’R, often just shortened to the King (which he rejected even more as he said there is only one King, Jesus). So, please don’t fall into the trap of blaming Elvis for claiming the title because he surely is not the one to blame at all. Others bestowed that title on him. 4. Regarding Tutti Fruiti, Little Richard is on record saying by Elvis singing it, he made it bigger and made Little Richard bigger. That is an indication of how massive Elvis reach was. Rufus Thomas, another black artist from the 50s said that Elvis gave an injection to black music that no other artist had ever done. On top of that, Elvis always stated his admiration for the black artists who influenced him. He said if he could beat his box (I think that means play guitar) as well as Arthur “Big Boy” Crudup (originator of the first song Elvis commercially recorded in 1954) he’d know he had it made. Thank you for your reaction today and for the diplomatic way you expressed your opinions and asked your questions.

@@MMBxMOB - you failed to mention that this insightful song: "In the Ghetto" was written by the great singer/songwriter Mac Davis. I like Mac's version of it too. Elvis never went anywhere; I always thought it was ridiculous that they said Elvis had a come-back; he was never gone. I think most of this was a ploy by his overly ambitious manager, Col. Parker. Yes, Elvis was drafted. RIP Mac.

    Mac Davis wrote this song.
He offered it to Sammy Davis Jr.
    He declined.
When elvis accepted to sing this song, he was told not to.
However, Elvis being Elvis sang this strong message.
Elvis grew up in Tupelo, Mississippi being dirt poor.
There was only 4 white families in his community.
Because his only playmates and friends were black, he was shunned.
His story is fascinating and well worth researching his life.

One of the things I love about watching the young Black men who do reaction videos is that I have discovered most of you are far more sensitive than I thought you would be. There is a universal reaction to this song at a gut level because so many of the reactors I watch can relate on a very real level. Many men older than you have been reduced to tears and talk of friends and family they have lost in similar situations to the one Elvis is singing about here. It is frankly tragic that so many of you can relate. I am a PoC who grew up in the UK and things were tough, but not Chicago ghetto tough, so I am saddened by the song but cannot feel it on the same level as so many of the reactors here do. It's emotional watching you all react to it. If your childhoods were hard, I hope life blesses you from now on. 💜

Going beyond his music , Elvis had a generous , giving heart ... a religious man , but still just a man , he gave back as much as he received throughout his life. He never forgot the problems of poverty he faced when he was a boy ... he believed in equality and the ability to follow your dreams . See the new movie with Austin Butler that came out this summer ... it will give you a better understanding of this very unique talent and why he still revered today ! TCB Elvis !

One of the reasons Elvis was so great was because of the diversity of his music & the way he could change the the tone of his great voice to suit whatever he was singing. He could sing energetic stuff like Such A Night & then at the blink of an eye go straight into Can't Help Falling in love which even Madonna has recorded.

Elvis was the greatest singer and performer of all time. Elvis was born and lived poor until he became famous. Elvis was 1 of 4 white families living in East Tupelo Miss until he was 13 and they moved to Memphis. One of his black childhood friends, was interview by Baz Luhrman for the recent Elvis movie. Check out UA-cam for Baz interview with Mr Sam Bell to learn a bit about Elvis, including where he got some of his singing and dancing influence. There is also a UA-cam video comparing Elvis and Michael Jackson movements, dancing. The video is titled, I’ve Got a Feeling in My Body.

BUT watching him live, seeing his face, the emotion and passion he shows in his live performances really touches the heart. When it says "come back" its because he was in the army for 2 years, when he came home he was locked into a contract to do something like 30 movies.. he returned to performing live after that contract ended. thats the "come back"

Any place can be a ghetto, and the KING, ELVIS grew up in the ghetto until he was 14, when his family moved from Tupelo, Mississippi, where he was born, to Memphis, Tennessee, where he lived in the projects until he got his first paying gig! He recorded almost 800 songs, made 31 hit movies, sold 8 billion records, and was put into 5 MUSIC HALL OF FAMES! He also received many, many accolades and awards! He was an unbelievable humanitarian! The lists go on and on! He was drafted into the army and music was not quite as important after Germany as it was before; hence "THE ELVIS COME-BACK T.V. SHOW"! I would suggest that you listen to "If I Could Dream"! He sang this on the "COME-BACK SHOW"! It is phenomenol! He was introduced to amphetamines by the military! But, don't let anyone fool you, he died from a heart attack! NO DRUGS, NO MATTER WHO SAYS THAT! I was there from the beggining, to say the least! I knew the man and his music, 1954-1977! He was a spectacular piano player and good guitarist; but he was a MASTERFUL singer! You wanted some songs to react to, well here are a few...1)That's All Right 2)Mystery Train 3)Heartbreak Hotel 4)I Was The One 5)Blue Suede Shoes 6)Hound Dog. 7)Don't Be Cruel. 8)Love Me Tender. 9)All Shook Up. 10)Jailhouse Rock. 11)Trouble. 12)It's Now Or Never. 13)Are You Lonesome Tonight? 14)Little Sister. 15)Can't Help Falling In Love 16)Return To Sender. 17)Devil In Disguise. 18)Viva Las Vegas. 19)A Little Less Conversation. 20)If I Can Dream 21)In The Ghetto. 22)Suspicious Minds. 23)Don't Cry Daddy. 24)Kentucky Rain. 25)Burning Love. 26)Hawaiian Love Song. 27)U.S. Male. 28)Baby Let's Play House. 29)Let It Be Me. 30)Solitaire. 31)Fame Or Fortune. 32)I Believe 33)Bridge Over Troubled Water. 34)Black Cadillac. 35)And, I Love You So. 36)Bossa Nova Baby. 37)How Great Thou Art. 38)Amazing Grace. 39)Midnight Train. 40)Clean Up Your Own Backyard! 41)Well, It Never Rains In Spain. 42)Merry Christmas Baby. 43)Blue Christmas. 44)I'll Be Home For Christmas. 45)O Little Town Of Bethlehem. 46)Silent Night. 47)Winter Wonderland. 48)The First Noel. 49)Holly Leaves and Christmas Trees. 50)O Come, All Ye Faithful. 51)I'll Be Home On Christmas Day. 52)If Every Day Was Like Christmas. 53)White Christmas. 54)Santa Claus Is Back In Town 55)Here Comes Santa Claus. 56)Santa Bring My Baby Back (To Me) 57) Mama Loved The Roses. 58)The Green, Green Grass of Home. 59)Stand By Me. 60)My Way. 61)Crawfish. 62)Shake, Rattle, and Roll. 63)The Great White Milky Way. 64)Always On My Mind. 65)Surrender. 66)Suspicion. 67)Good Rockin' Tonight. 68)Milk Cow Blues Boogey. 69)I'm left, You're Right, She's Gone. 70)I Want You-I Need You-I Love You. 71)This Time You Gave Me A Mountain. 72)I Got A Woman. 73)I'll Never Let You Go Little Darling. 74)I Love You Because. 75)Just Because. 76)Too Much. 77)Let Me Be You're Teddy Bear. 78)A Fool Such As I. 79)Don't. 80)I'm In Love With My Best Friend's Girl. 81)Something Blue. 82)Fever. 83)In The Garden. 84)Farther Along. 85)Hard Headed Woman. 86)Big Hunk Of Love. 87)Stuck On You. 88)A Mess Of Blues. 89)Wooden Heart. 90)I Feel So Bad. 91)Marie's The Name, His Latest Flame. 92)No More. 93)Mexico. 94)Fun In Acapulco. 95)Kissin Cousins. 96)Crying In The Chapel. 97)Joshua Fit The Battle. 98)Frankie And Johnny. 99)Long Legged Girl. 100)Memories. This is all that I could think of, off handed! Believe me, when I say that I am an ELVIS FANATIC!!! I LOVE ELVIS! And I have loved him my entire life...75 years of ELVIS! He was phenomenol! I probably could have given you 200 more if I had too! ELVIS is someone that you must research...you must jump down into the ELVIS rabbit hole and really learn about the KING OF ROCK AND ROLL! He didn't like to be called the KING! Once, some fans were screeming that at him during a concert and he stopped the music, he stopped singing, and hushed the audience. He very loudly replied, with sincerity in his voice, "Don't ever call me THE KING AGAIN, I AM NOT THE KING, JESUS CHRIST IS THE ONLY TRUE KING, I am only a singer!" Of course, his fans continued to call him KING...but ELVIS hated being called KING! It was just his fans that wouldn't stop! However, in my heart of hearts, I think that he deserved to be call The KING of ROCK and ROLL! In my opinion, no one was better than ELVIS! He was the GOAT!

I want to point one thing out regarding the mother having another baby she couldn't afford. This song came out in the late 1960s. It was only legalized throughout the US for married women to use birth control in 1965, and unmarried women didn't get that right until 1972. Of course, there are a lot of other barriers, like lack of sex education, lack of access to contraception even if it is legal, lack of the ability to say no to s*x, and other barriers to preventing unwanted pregnancies. This still happens today, obviously, but there were a lot more barriers to preventing unwanted pregnancies back then. And as other people have commented here, Elvis didn't write the song, but he did grow up in poverty and he knew firsthand what that is like. That's part of the reason he agreed to record it. It was a controversial song, and other artists wouldn't touch it. But he had the name recognition and the clout to be able to record and release this song, and I'm glad he did. It is my favorite Elvis Presley song. It's about something real that, sadly, is still every bit as much a problem today as it was way back then. I grew up very poor, and I have cousins who've been in and out of jail and rehab more times than I can count, and this song always touched me deeply and I think it might even be part of the reason I'm a social worker today. Because like Elvis, I know what it's like to be poor and hungry. I remember times when I was a kid when it was either food or electricity. We couldn't afford both. I think this song is so important, and still remarkably and disappointingly relevant today. I wish the world had changed since then, gotten better, but it hasn't. There's still so much poverty and people just trying to survive.

Appreciated your genuine response to my hero on the 50s and 60s.
Elvis did his army stint in Germany and also that 'gap' you referred to was when he made many movies. His comeback was widely waited for and took place in Las Vegas over a period of time. His iconic outfits were reminiscent of his love of judo. Elvis was surrounded by his possessive entourage 100% of the time, never leaving him time to himself. He was incredibly generous buying Caddilacs for people he hardly knew.
Elvis had everything..as a performer and a human being..that's why he was so loved and still is. The 1950s was a time of wholesomeness..strict religious codes of behaviour and the young loved his breaking through those behaviours. His hips and leg gyrations are mild compared to todays overtly sexualised dancing, but the kids went wild..he broke that stuffy mould and religious people hated him (corruption if their kids' morals)..so stupid. He wasn't a good actor but people wanted to see him. His style changed a lot after that.. a lot more mature..but still with a stage presence no one could emulate. His death was a terrible blow..and even here in Australia, he is still celebrated by young and old alike. See some of his earlier videos too.

Tutti Frutti is actually a rhythm and blues song, but yes rhythm and blues is one of the genres that rock was comprised of, along with gospel, blues, jazz, bluegrass, and its own distinct sound. Little Richard has said that he's a big fan of Elvis. I don't know if Elvis ever said anything about Little Richard, but he did a rock 'n roll style cover of Tutti Frutti so he must have been a Little Richard fan.

Elvis grew up in one of the poorest neighbourhoods in mississippi, it was considered integrated because there were about 4 white families that lived in the black neighbourhood. Most of his friends were black, his best friend actually did an interview about them growing up together a couple of years ago, unfortunately he died soon after. His twin brother died at birth and his father was in prison for quite a while for passing a bad cheque. He knew the ghetto, he grew up there.
He was part american indian, from both his mother and fathers sides but his manager did not want that information to become public knowledge because of the racism of the time.

Elvis is the only musician enshrined in these halls of fame: Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Country Music Hall of Fame, Rockabilly Hall of Fame, Gospel Hall of Fame, Honky Tonk Hall of Fame, Rhythm & Blues Music Hall of Fame, Christian Music Hall of Fame. An educational look at appropriation.
Rock and Roll was merged together with three main music genres. 1. Country music, rockabilly and Honky Tonk are created by white people. The first commercial recording of what is widely considered to be the first country song featuring vocals and lyrics was Fiddlin' John Carson with "Little Log Cabin in the Lane" for Okeh Records on June 14, 1923. He was white.
    2. Gospel music was about 50% black and 50% white in the 1940s and 50s. The first published use of the term "gospel song" appeared in 1874. The original gospel songs were written and composed by authors such as George F. Root, Philip Bliss, Charles H. Gabriel, William Howard Doane, and Fanny Crosby. All of them were white.
    3. Black musicians invented the blues. I love the blues. William Christopher Handy was black. In 1912 he published “Memphis Blues,” now considered the first blues song.
My point is simple. Rock and Roll music is composed of multiple genres of music. Black and white cultures and genres ... Middle Eastern and Asian cultures too were are important ingredients of Rock and Roll and American music as a whole. So Elvis was a monumental cultural figure who's GREATEST GENIUS was understanding and mixing cultures and he just had immense God given talents. He truly believed MUSIC could bring people TOGETHER. He was right of course. The fact a white man was going against the grain he became a counter culture hero. His enemy was older white people from the south, the elites of the day. Youth Revolution and Civil Rights movements were ongoing and Elvis' music was a critical figure in both movements.

You should watch video of Elvis generous heart. He gave most of his $$$ to many people and charities. Watch a few videos like one of his cooks, who he loved and she loved him. He bought her a house. There will never be another Elvis. There is a great video between Sam Bell and Baz Luhrman( (producer of the movie Elvis). Sam Bell grew up
With Elvis in the ghetto in Tupelo Mississippi. He tells how his childhood pal, would go to
the black church and was always singing in the choir. Elvis HAD to go to white school back then and was not happy. He loved coming home to all his best friends. Elvis
Would never harm black community as he really was one of them. He had to go with his mama to pick cotton when she had no one to watch him as his daddy went to jail for forgery. He was gone nine months. Gladys, Elvis mon, wrote whoever explaining the hardship not having her husband to be helping with survival. He was released at nine months. He changed a $4.00 check to $40.00 check. Though not right, that person’s check who he changed owed him the $$. When Elvis lived in Tupelo, he had no indoor plumbing or electricity. His dad and uncle built a two room shotgun house. You can easily find that home and Tupelo history and statue dedicated to him online.

Elvis transitioned from singer to movie star very early in his career. He made his first movie Love Me Tender in 1956. His manager, the incorrigible Tom Parker had an artist management philosophy that an artist should not compete with himself. So, once Elvis came back from his Army service in 1960, Parker locked him into 3 movies a year deal with Hollywood. Most of the music Elvis recorded from 1961 to 1968 was soundtracks for his movies (in total he made 31 movies from 1956 - 1969), with the quality of the songs varying widely. Elvis was starting to become isolated from the wider music consumer and had not done a live concert since 1957 (apart from two charity concerts in 1961). The NBC TV Special simply entitled “Singer Presents Elvis”, the very first TV special featuring just ONE artist, was the first time Elvis had sung to a live audience in almost 8 years. Over time this TV Special has affectionately been renamed Elvis 1968 Comeback. He was contracted to do 2 more movies in 1969, after which he restarted his live performances and never stepped inside a Hollywood studio ever again other than to rehearse for his concert style movies “Elvis: That’s The Way It Is.” and “Elvis On Tour”.
