Doug, I’m an elementary school principal. I carved one of these little bears and gave it to a kindergartener who was having a hard time adjusting to school. He carries it in his pocket now. It made a positive difference for several people… him, his parents, his teachers. Just wanted to say thank you. I’ll be carving more.
Dang this made me so happy. Ty. After what my sons gone through last year, this brought a whole lot of tears to my eyes. Sure wish someone as compassionate as you had been at our school. We need more ppl like you; both as educators and as humans in general.
You are by far the best whittling teacher online, sir! Thanks a lotty for showing instead of boasting. I've made lots of your projects, wish you would make a hundred more videos. Thanks again!
I am young but I’ve just started wood carving and your videos have really helped me and I’ve leaned tips and tricks from you. And with all this covid stuff wood carving is something I enjoy doing thanks
I’m new at carving and sire enjoy all the videos, I’ve found them very helpful! I’m 76 years old and wish I would have started this hobby years ago !!!!
Thank you. Grandkids are gonna love this one. Appreciate the detail and clarity of your instructions. I always marvel at your ability as a teacher -- you are the best, hands down!
I know I am late to comment because this video came out a while back but I just want to say that you inspired me to start carving wood I am young but I find this very interesting to me and it’s a fun hobby and I want to thank you for sharing your skills with us to help me be able to make these I just ordered a kit yesterday so I will be trying to make one of these right when I get my kit thank you
You will never know how much I enjoy your video's. I have learned so many techniques from you which have helped me as a new carver. Thank you ever so much.
Having already commented I must say I love the result of the end result. Only one done so far and I plan on so so many more. Such a joy and smile I had once I had given the carved bear an oil/stain. I am watching this over and over and can see how gifted you are with how you can foresee the carves. More bear carvings please!!!
I am a new carver and have followed and watched all your tutorials. You are an awesome carver and teacher. I think you should publish a book on your carvings. I would be the first to purchase it. I think many beginners and regular carvers would agree. Thanks for sharing.
New to your channel. It came up in my suggestions, and I'm glad it did. A subscriber now, and plan to go back and watch more of your videos. I've been a crafter for a very long time, but never did wood carving, or sculpting. Two things I want to try still, before I get too old to do it.. haha You have motivated me to give it a shot. Thank you SO much. Even if I can't do it, I still enjoy watching you create. Beautiful work. Thank you so much. 💗💗💗
🎵 If you go down to the woods today.....🎵 Time for a Teddy-bear's picnic video I think....love the channel Doug, keep up the great work and thanks for sharing.
Hey Doug, I hope you, Sophie and the family are well. This is a wonderful project and I will make a couple of these guys next week. As always, you make it fun and you have a way of inspiring us to learn. I started to carve because of you somewhere in 2017 I think beginning with the stick chicken and I have made just about everything you have taught us. Thank you Doug for introducing me to this great hobby. God Bless You sir!
Hello, Doug.. ThAnk you for taking the time to showing how you carve these little Bears. I'm always looking for new things to challenge myself as well little hand crafted items to make folks smile. 🙂✌️
Hi I’m addressing my message to the people I discovered who are helping me to stay calm in those covid day’s ! Since I’m about seven years old, I started to learn sharpening and use pocket knives that I had in my Boy’s Scout tool kit. Fifty years later, I still literally adore sharpening Knifes of any kinds, a knife is never to sharp ! About 2 to 3 years ago, I started Chip carving and gouge chisel carving, yes I like it specially chip Carving.Recently , looking to a magazine ( woodcarving) I tried myself on a Fisherman Christmas tree ornement and I really discovered something I liked. After finishing my project , I looked at different video on you tube, I discovered that Whittling is such a wonderfull art. Then came the UA-cam video’s of Doug (Linker) … ho wow … such a great teacher with a nice and modest and generous way of teaching his art. Thank you all of you that generously give us the newbies this technique to help us become more quiet and relaxed persons ! I really appreciate to discover something that I had inside me that I wasn’t ’t able to express because of my lack of artistic skils ! I realy stink when comes times of drawing a sketch ! With Doug tutorial I find it much more easy to tackle complex carving models . Thant You so much ! From a Quebec Canadian who loves wood working ! Richard. ( sorry for my imperfect mastering of English language !)
This was my first attempt at a carving like this. Loved your video. Very easy to follow. If I do say so myself, my bear turned out pretty good for a first time. Very excited to make more. Love the whole idea of using only one knife. Made it very easy for me to carry it with me and work on it whenever I had down time. Thankfully, all my friends and family don’t mind me leaving wood chips wherever I go.
Here in Northern Ireland we’ve been putting teddy bears in the windows so the kids can play a game of finding them when their out getting their daily exercise & we are also putting a rainbow up to show support for the health care workers. I’m going to carve one for every colour of the rainbow to kill two birds etc. Cheers for the idea & for keeping us entertained
Amazing video, I like the detailing of the toes, finger, nose, lip, , eyes and ears this will be my first project. I look forward to your other videos.
Just finished my first Linker Bear. Thank you so much for the video...I watched it 3 times then carved along with you.... I really appreciate your instruction and willingness to share.Thank you Doug!
I decided to learn to carve from wood. I came by your video. I carved my first bear. I’ve learned so much as I went along. What to do and what not to do. He is far from perfect but he is completed and I’m ready to try again. Love your videos. You are an excellent teacher. Thank you.
Hi Doug, I think the Bear is the best wood Bear I ever saw in the zero to six inch range. I am totally happy with all you do on UA-cam. I like the laid back approach you use. Your wife joining you on Sat. nights makes it even better. Impossible to please everybody so I am happy if you keep doing it your way!
I was recently looking for a new hobby and I stumbled upon your videos. I love your work and it looks fun! I bought a cheap wood carving tool set off Amazon and cannot wait to try and make one of these bears. Thank you!
Should have gone to bed an hour ago. Worth the lack of sleep. Very enjoyable video! You are like Bob Ross in wood carving. Thanks for sharing your craft.
You are awesome. I carved out a wizard from a piece of kindling this past weekend with a small Swiss Army and a S&W Tac blade. It turned out great and the kids loved it. I do have a new hole in my hand now though. I'm definitely going to get me a carving knife AND a glove. Looks like the bears are next on my list. Thanks for your videos. God bless
Watched you on a winter camping video with Joe using your campfire moments to carve a face on a stick. I thought how brilliant. I've got a lot of campfire time myself. What better way to use it. Watched a few of your tutorials on UA-cam and just now ordered a woodcarving set including strop and gloves. I'm diving in! Thanks for the direction. I'm a convert.
Great little bear I tried one and my wife thinks it's cute so I made a slightly bigger one. They are great little projects thanks for sharing your work it's great that people like you do these so people like me can learn. Thank you
I dabbled in whittling for years but after seeing one of your vids you inspired me. I’ve done probably most of yours some of the guys you mention and with what I’ve learned from you I see something and I just dive in and carve it. Thank you! You and your wife have a real nice down to earth way aboot (joke) ya. Thanks for all you do and God bless y’all Dave
Your carvings are wonderful. Your videos are a pleasure to watch. Very humorous at points. I have successfully carved a few myself from your tutorials. Was even able to carve a "Bad Day Bear" for my wife's stressful work day, yesterday. I would not consider myself a Wood Carver yet but, I WILL be soon. Thanks to You.
I just stopped in the comments to tell you how truly inspired I am with your videos ☺️. I bought myself a carving kit to start practicing little projects like this until I can get really good at it .
Hello Doug, I would love to buy two of the bears from you. So cute. I love them. I may try to start craving myself! Looks fun. You really know what you're doing. Thanks for the videos.
i have been watching this video over and over to make my own, i had 8 little blocks of basswood and i have 8 grandchildren, so its taking me quite awhile to watch a few steps, turn off the video, carve the 8 bears and go back to the video but they are looking good , now to find beeswax recipe as i have a ton of beeswax, thanks for this video from me and my grandchildren.
I did my first bear in a log from a previous tutorial that Doug did, my block of wood was only 1/2" x 1/2 inch. This bear may have come out a little small, but my wife said this was the best wood carved bear she's seen in a long time: in the front of the bear I added some honey dripping from the bears mouth that dripped down onto his chest, log, and on the log. The paint was a little time consuming as I had to mix my paint to get that honey color, but otherwise it turned out good enough my wife put it in the kitchen. She tells me this is a great decor for our kitchen, it helped me too because we live so close to the Smokey Mountain of Tennessee, and we see a lot of bears, this helped me to make it more realistic, and thanks to Doug on his tutorial in the video "Bear in a log" I figured what's a bear in a log without honey, very pleased! Doug thank you, keep up the great work: I'm working on this one on making a full bear.👍❤💯👏
Great little bears! Loved your grand kids comment too. Now write a few things down, you want them to know. None of my grandparents wrote anything down for us. Would have been a priceless treasure. Thanks again for this awesome video!
When making that deep elbow crook cut, I find that cutting initially just short of the lines works better. Then after you get the bulk out, shave/sneak up to the lines. That will get rid of all the little cut marks. Hope that makes sense.
Doug, being relatively new to carving your videos are very inspiring and easy to follow. Got a new found passion and it's getting me through this lockdown nicely, thank you :)
Outstanding Doug. My youngest sister is an administrator at University of Maine - the Black Bears- you have inspired me and I bet you can figure out what she is getting for a birthday present! Keep up your awesome videos, you are a blessing to us all!
About 2 weeks ago I decided to give whittling a try and started with the 5 minute wizard which didn't turn out too terrible so I gave it a few more tries and watched several more of your tutorials. I am not sure why but you remind me of Bob Ross, in a good way. Anyhow, I landed on this tutorial and decided to give it a try. As you would expect from a novice I made several mistakes and chipped the nose. The end result after trying to fix my mistakes, my bear looks more like a fat lion so that is what I will claim it to be. I could also see how this could be modified to be a pig. You make very good tutorials and I look forward to seeing more. Thanks for inspiring us new whittlers.
I also chopped the side of my first ones face to thin and it looked a bit deformed. I don’t think my knife is sharp enough I have real trouble with the wood just going stringy around the ears.
Brilliant project Doug, I've found your channel a month ago and found it very inspiring love your family and the way you present your projects, many thanks Keith.
I’ve carved a couple of your other bear style. I really like this bear shape. I appreciate the measured pencil markings it helps with the first one to get the feel for the proportions. Very clear tutorial. You are an excellent teacher. After twenty little men and a couple of bears you have me hooked on carving caricatures. I’ve found no video or books with little carvings I personally like as well. Thanks Doug.

Thanks once again Doug for such a great little carving!!! Your carvings always amaze me in the number of ways each carving can be made to look differently with just a few cuts... Makes each and every carving unique, yet still the same figure you were intending to carve! Thanks sooo much for all you do! May you and yours Stay SAFE and HEALTHY ALWAYS my friends!!!

Great video Doug. I think the only thing keeping us Whittlers sane is a piece of wood and a whittling knife. I couldn't go a day without whittling.

Hello Doug, I would love to buy two of the bears from you. So cute. I love them. I may try to start craving myself! Looks fun. You really know what you're doing. Thanks for the videos.
Nice tutorial, I enjoy the way you minimize layouts, tools and knife strokes, keep up the good works....Thx
i have been watching this video over and over to make my own, i had 8 little blocks of basswood and i have 8 grandchildren, so its taking me quite awhile to watch a few steps, turn off the video, carve the 8 bears and go back to the video but they are looking good , now to find beeswax recipe as i have a ton of beeswax, thanks for this video from me and my grandchildren.
Thanks Doug I learn a lot from your carving videos.
Awesome videos! I’ve always wanted to get I to carving and your videos have encouraged me to take the leap.
These are awesome!!!! Only thing I would add would be that cute little tail on the back.. lol but still aweosme!!!
