No Pavement: Overlanding Phoenix to Crown King to Payson! Part 2 - Ultimate Adventure 2017

- Part 2 of Ultimate Adventure 2017. The standard Ultimate Adventure formula has typically been one hardcore off-road day followed by a long, slogging road day to get to the next trail system. However, for UA2017 even our road days required low-range. With another incredibly hot day in store, we began Day Two high-tailing it out of Phoenix, Arizona, into the outlying mountains and began climbing in elevation. As the trail continued the scenery got better, the terrain got a bit more challenging, and mechanical issues began to manifest themselves. By the time we got to our camp that night, we had plenty of repairs to make from rebuilding a steering box to bending suspension links back into shape, welding stuff back together, and more. Day Three began early and promised an equally slim amount of pavement as Day Two as we hopped on the DeSoto Mine Trail. With rocky ledges, steep switcbacks, and killer scenery, the hot, dusty trail continued until many of the vehicles were on vapors. After a quick fuel stop, we were back on dirt and more overlanding, taking the Great Western Trail to our final destination for the day. In the end, this would the longest off-road day in Ultimate Adventure history. But it’s not over and the rest of UA2017 would see more firsts for this event.

This is the true off road adventure, no competition inside. Everybody can enjoyed no matter what 4x4 u drive.
Go back and watch like 2014 UA it's honestly far better.
I will, thanks bro.
love to bring my rzr turbo s on these trips would be fun
I would like to see this as a race 🏁
@David miorgan oh you are so right. I consider off roading to be knocking down trees and creating a path where there are non made..
"we haven't seen pavement in two days" haha, you boys need to try australia.
try Pennsylvania roads....lol
Wen't on a "Casual" jeep ride up from Apache Jnctn to 4 peaks last year about 7000ft. Those switchbacks had my palms sweating the entire way up. And there's crosses everywhere! Cool experience for a prairie boy Going from Saguaros to pine trees. Amazing trails in Arizona. Beautiful state.
I'm in az too ^_^
Finally get to watch these. I passed these guys on I-17 coming down from flagstaff.
Born & Raised in Arizona and glad to see you guys doing a UA out here!
It's great to finally see the trails that I have been running for years on the Ultimate Adventure. So far since they started on day one this is all home
It sure is nice to see Arizona trails again. Some of those dirt roads you guys were on, used to be our route for riding dirtbikes. Awesome sobfar!! Can't wait for the next one!
The guy that completed the whole thing with the film van is a Badass!
I think I figured out the problem with the narrating. There isn't enough personality in it, there is a lot of professional script reading. We want to hear things like how cool that front clip swapped jk was, we heard that it was interesting. I guess my point is that most of the consistent viewers want Rick to narrate it. It seems like we won't get that. Don't make it the same as his, it just needs more life.
bannablitz247 a lot more life
You're not enjoying " Wheeling", the documentary?
I agree, without Rick it's boring as hell
Fred did a decent job in the past as well, which Rick was better at it but hell man, the narration on this needs more life.
That 4x4 van is awesome!
This UA is awesome, I like seeing everything in my backyard!
I love the Crown King run. It's not far away, but it will take you as far as you want to go. Now I gotta do DeSoto though. Looks like a blast.
Dream trip!!! From the cactus to the pines, it doesn’t get any better!!! I’m so glad I sold my PreRunner Taco and finally got a Jeep.
Jeeps are great off road. It's too bad they look like a little girl's Barbie toy.
bassage13 Stock they do I agree, but mine definitely does not anymore LOL!
Been on that trail many times. It is fun at night and winter with snow also. The restaurant and the bar at Crown King is a big plus. Als there are many hidden trails in the area. Some very hardcore.
Rusty old jeep is the best looking of all!
Fred must have run out of coffee 😂
Thoroughly enjoyed this one, Brad. Thank you for the vicarious vacay. I look forward to your videos, this is coming from a guy who doesn't watch t.v. Quality content.
The burgers are great! I live in Michigan but a good friend lives in Congress, outside of Wickenburg. Spent 5 months out there a couple winters ago, CK was a popular ride, though I never did it from Phoenix. The single track mountain side trails are the best, especially when you have to back up to a turn around spot...
It seems like the working van is the hero behind the scenes
💪😁🤘
Loved this episode. I live in Mayer and have driven to Crown King. My zr2 is stock so I stuck to the main dirt road since there were no other vehicles. Didn't wanna be stranded. I always wondered how bad some side trails were. Now I'm glad I didn't attempt them.
In 1998. My buddy and I. Used this trip day ride for practice. Getting ready to ride Baja. We parked at lake pleasant and 2 hrs to krown king couple times on to Prescott. When we final did get to Baja those practice days paid off some days were over two hundred miles in 6 hrs . I remember seeing those Jeep guys 😂 crawling along. It would take all day to do what we did in a couple hours. But there the coolest PEOPLE your ever going to meet.
Crown King is NOT named after a neighboring mine- its named after the 5 mtn. peaks surrounding the town look like a crown. I've been bowhunting deer up there since 1970.😊
^_^
I thought they were talking about the Desoto Mine trail.
Great show! I like that it’s not over hyped!
Guys please learn something for this video. These brave men and women risked it all in the making of this video, The incredible camera work. The crazy skills of the leader or spotter .WOW just incredible. Please again thank these brave men and women especially the leader of the bunch. He has some mad spotting skills. WOW.I Please really comment on what you think. Lets be honest.
Where's Pewe? Who didn't get the shot? I know he's been on Roadkill. He has presence on screen -- Feed him a line or two.
I wondered the same thing
He works for jp magazine now.
enjoying watching every single moment god bless all
Is it just me or does poor Fred look like his so covered in dust that he is going to blend into the background at his 15:30 interview 😂
You really should reach out to some AZ cinematography crews, it would help out a lot. I know plenty of people who would've loved to be on the project. Good content, but really needs help with video/sound.
i wish we would see more of the van!
I did something like this in my 4x4 mega cab. 6” loft with 37’s. It’s fun!
I keep thinking how I could blast down those trails in my RZR. Really digging the expose on the Copper Canyon trail down into Camp Verde. Gonna have to look into setting up a ride down and back.
Should have Fred narrate. Much more entertaining.
Wow. Everyone looks like hell. This must have been a blast!!!
Makes me want to buy a jeep, I love fixing stuff on the trail!
I am loving the commentary.
Seems like UA has been watered down by editing.
So did that van on those little tires do all the same obstacles? Or was there a lot of bypasses?
About 15 of the obstacles on Crown King have a bypass. I think there's like 2 that don't.
And that trail changes dramatically all the time.
that looks like a blast, thanks for sharing :)
*Nazel-Filled-Call* "DRIVERS MEETING!!!"
Or, you could just call it "off roading" like we've done for years.
Especially when it's not actually "overlanding"...
Fred looks miserable.
miserable Fred makes me laugh :D
You guys should find some portable solar to sponsor you for power at camp.
Love that the only things broken were new jeeps.
Kind of embarrassing all those repairs getting performed on the jeeps while the FULL SIZED VAN is there to document it all.
The van spends most it's time on paved roads .jeeps spends alot of time off road bumping and jarring things loose.
The Jeeps did all the off-roading the van is just driving around on the streets getting shots whenever they can.
So glad I’m a dirt biker. Sure is a different crowd.
@@robertsharrock188s Even though I am new to the off-roading game, it seems to just be these people who are Debby Downers, Mark Turner and his buddy (the two older, somewhat bigger but jolly fellas) are great examples of how there are still good people who enjoy off-roading, try looking up this guy named “fab rats”, he’s pretty entertaining
love it! Dream to come drive one of these UA oneday. Or be part of the film crew haha
Good to see the xj got it fixed!
Where is FRED?!?!?
Wow, Dave looks so much different in this episode than he does in dirt every day.
Watched the whole video just waiting to see more of the S10 Blazer and sadly it wasn't really shown! I've got one that's lifted some and rocks offroad so I always like to see more of them
That 4x4 van is 4x4 van GOALS!
AZ cowboys do those trails in old ranch trucks
Been up that trail several times. It's nice.... in the winter. Didn't know anyone wanted to punish themselves and do it jun-august
They used Model Ts before they had Jeep. That Copper canyon has mountain lion roaming it. They should have went to the top of Squaw Peak. Easy enough climb with a gold mine along the way. Haven't been through there in 12 years so I don't know if it is still operating. The rocks around there can slice your tire sidewalls so not a place to go without at least 6 ply tires.
Yeah, it's not impressive. I did it in my wife's 2002 Jeep Liberty.
Lmao, it's TRUE, I'm from AZ & I have a buddy with an old family cattle ranch in that area.
I used to love watching these and stopped bc it was videos on all the old cronies or sponsors and not on the readers. See who they really care about. Can't even buy a magazine in stores now gotta order them. Get ur act together. Go take a stock rig trail riding and see what u can do. Or do it on a small budget build. No tires bigger than 33s.
Very cool. This is where I used to live and wheel. *thumbs up*
That spot at 11:35 will make your butt pucker if you're smart. lol That is a LONG way to roll down.
Dam, the JKs just keep breaking down.
I wonder why.....
Jeeps are famous for breaking down. Reliability is at the BOTTOM of the charts.
I have been up that trail several times and it changes every time it rains
Love the little blazer
Where the pavement ends the PARTY begins whoo.
Pretty hilarious how often jeeps break down while wheeling
But why does the skyjacker Jeep have Fox shocks? 🤔😂
For a Jeep, I'd DEFINITELY suggest Teraflex. And they're good guys.
LOVE the Dugas road... my passengers at the time? hated it lol (atv recommended, LC - no)
This was an EZ thumbs up!!
Beautiful route, beautiful rigs I liked every step of that vídeo 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Love that ol ratrod looking CJ. Anymore videos of it?
Back in the 80s in an 84 Toyota pick up that was stock, I discovered the back road to Crown King, we take a girlfriend and go up the back way, now I seem to think that was probably pretty stupid, but the road wasn’t so beat up like it is now. Also the De Soto mine, it’s amazing how the roads have deteriorated over the years, we used to go up to the De Soto mine all the time, there used to be big water bars in the road which actually were built to keep people from driving up to the mines, I believe it was the swastika mine, up above the De Soto, that you couldn’t get to you unless you walk, and it is kind of funny to see these fancy Rigs and I did it in stock vehicle, it did make a difference going up to the De Soto in an 89 Jeep Cherokee, with Goodyear Wrangler tires back in the day , lots more wheel travel, can’t wait to do it again in the jeep grand Cherokee with a long arm lift, that should make things a lot smoother, great video guys thanks for sharing
Nice video, keep them coming!
hilarious that it was all those new JKs breaking down. I love my JK but I wouldnt dare take it on one of these I know what its capable of
I Live in Phoenix, and have been through that area many times on dual sport and adventure bikes, but never on 4 wheels. Looks like fun, though I can't imagine anyone wanting to do it in a 4 door mall crawler. The wheelbase on those things is way to long, and there is all that extra weight.
Sick hitting sedona in the next episode!!
They brought a welder man were they prepared
I'd love to do this!
Yeah me too. I don't understand the negative comments it looks like a ton of fun to me.
Why does fred look like he hates his life?
Cameron Stevens it might be because they split him up from Dirthead Dave
Probably had something to do with eating dust all day in 110F temps.
try being in the 110 degree heat all day. he might actually be dehydrated lmao, never can drink enough water in those conditions.
I don't know if he actually does, but I tell u, for me, wow I would trade places with him in a second. Could u imagine all the cool builds he gets to do? All for the magazine or for the channel? I don't hate on the guy at all, I actually really enjoy his work, but man, I'd love to be able to do just one of those amazing builds! If I could pick just one, it would likely be the amazing super dirty or that super duty with the portal axles the white one with the short bed! Wow what a truck! Or his big chevy army truck. I'd happily take either.
He just looked tired is all.
Need more videos like this
Lets see more of the s10 blazer!!! 2nd day and apparently it hasn't hit any hard obstacles?!?!
Cool video! You have my like 👍
It Really Looks Like FUN 🛩😎🛩
I did the back road to Crown King in a 78 El Camino in 1989. Only broke one rear shock.
Awesome stuff I want to go on the Ultimate Adventure
Fred definitely hasn’t met an 18 wheeler traveling at 60 mph on gravel
I drove up to crown king in a ford probe one time to go see someone who was camping up there. It took my 2 hours just about.
Glad I got rid of my JKU lol they’re junk. The JLs are nice though!
YAY, TUBESOCK!
That xj is sooo nice
where can I see more videos of the jeep shown in minute 2:22???
I got a great drinking game... every time someone says how hot it is, drink some water, or whatever your into.
Whatever your what is into?
Why do none of the these fully built rigs have coolshirt systems?
I feel like that would be a no brainer on a trip like this?
Is there a map anywhere of the route? I'd like to check out that route on the Great Western Trail
Great scenery
Great videos
I've done that trail in a Jeep and on a dirt bike a few times.
Wheres rick pewe and his jesus sandles
Cody Barron don't think MT wanted someone triggered by his Jesus sandles.
He's in the dual front end JK
What’s the minimum tire size required to do this? Also, how do I become so lucky as to make this ride with y’all? Awesome video.
33s I would say. Did in a 4runner with a 3 inch lift and 33s. Also have done in it in rubicon with 35s. 35s help
that fluid that was getting put back into the leaking jeep was so burnt
Feels like a NatGeo documentary not an UA vid
Are those repairs in any way related to reliability issues?
guys there are so many cool trails in the area you went through that you missed now it looks like Az has weak trails! WTF!
sponsor chairs? they looked comfortable
Bull got lot of testosterone 😂😂😂
what kind of jeep setup was Fred running this episode?
Hmm what's the relation between wheelbase and rock crawling? I'm not an offroad guy by any means lol
Out of all the rigs I'd take the van
