The physical comedy of this episode made me forget that it's supposed to be about the Atari 5200. I don't even care, this is one of the best AVGN episodes
This might be the most realistic episode the Nerd has ever made. You feel the frustration that he feels because we’ve all put up with the bullshit of swapping cables
For whatever reason, this is still one of my favorite episodes, if not THE favorite episode. I generally prefer the episodes where he talks about hardware instead of just games, maybe because he always has something fascinating to tell about said hardware, like it's history, technical aspects, stuff like that. I love it, it's like Gaming Historian with more swearing.
Reasons why it failed 1. Broken Controllers 2. the library was mostly 2600 games with better graphics, there was nothing really new 3. Over saturated market
all this, but respectfully disagree on "mostly 2600 games with better graphics". 5200 was my main console for the 80s, but of course i played a lot of 2600 at other people's houses. the 5200 controls (when the controller worked) were a LOT better, everything was smoother, you didn't have things flickering (example: defender, was much closer to the arcade, as was mrs pac man, and pac man. 2600 pacman was awful, nobody disputes this). super breakout was super smooth, and the sound was pretty rich for the time. it could have used a larger library, updated controllers (not controls though, they were nice. plus the non-centreing joystick was really a very good thing. you do NOT want pacman stopping when you need to shake your wrist) and oversaturation didn't help either
ESPECIALLY the lighting. Don't get me wrong, I like that James is continuing the tradition of mixing up the lighting, but there was something more intimate about it in the old days.

This is UA-cam. This is what you immediately think of whenever you hear the term. It's the Angry Video Game Nerd, and his reviews define the word "classic". Even though they are so simple by today's standards and the editing so primitive, they have a charm that will never be matched. The obsceneties spewed forth barely make any sense, but that's the whole beauty of it: he's just vocalizing our old frustrations with these games. The theme song? Just awesome. And the sparse setting just enhances the mood.
Another reason the 5200 failed, something James didn't mention, is that in the early 80's, the American consumer found the concept of upgrading a video game system after 3-5 years very alienating.

Danny AtomicFire A lot of his content is full of puns and references, just used to letting them go after a chuckle.
wow, nothin' gets past you. or maybe it does, considering you used a question mark. oh, and we may have missed this, but was avgn wearing a white shirt in this episode? please let us know if you noticed this too.
Joe Moorman if you look close enough, you will notice you can pause the video by clicking a button on the bottom left corner, this is known as the pause button by the selected few who have that knowledge, mind=blown amirite?
14 years later and I'll still loving this episode
"You put a golden egg (ATARI in the late 70's) on a mound of shit and it rolls down, and as it goes down, it gets shittier and shittier and by time it gets to the bottom, it's not the same anymore."

Lance Parker good analogy
8:27 Casually calling a controller an ungodly abomination that begs for apocalypse. This is what made AVGN so great. Not complex videos with fancy effects or detailled stories, just the way he presents interesting stuff.
9:50

Never forget that times....
10:28 'When you realize you left your wallet behind.'

Remember watching this when it came out. It’s just as hysterical now as it was back in 08. Cheers James, you’re the best UA-camr out there
Who else is rewatching these during quarantine?
I always rewatched them
6:13 ...AVGN, you failed at hiding your E.T. cartridge at this time
I never knew when he tried to plug the 5200 outlet into the plug strip was a reference to back to the future until I saw the movie.
Seeing the old internet at 10:00 makes me nostalgic.
Watching early AVGN trying to hook up a console is better than a lot of the more recent episodes/reviews.
hahaha! Same
