- The Nerd finds out how bad and frustrating it is to play on the Atari 5200 console, by playing a few games on it. This is Angry Video Game Nerd Episode 20.
The Atari 5200, infamous for its out of the box faulty controllers it doesn't take a genius to realize why it never caught on. Plagued with both the dawn of the video game crash of 1983 and lackluster quality hardware, the 5200 was quickly discontinued by 1984 and drifted off into obscurity behind the ever popular 2600.
Originally launched in late 1982, the 5200 was the first console to feature the likes of a pause button, yes that's right! What we take for granted today was a real big thing back then. Not to mention full analogue controls, which for these types of games were perhaps a bit too excessive for the time.
In this episode the nerd gives his verdict as to why the 5200 failed. Shows off the all so intuitive controller and tries out the ginormous track ball accessory. He also gives his views on the confusing cartridge and power cable design.
Now what's the main thing about playing a video game? Well being able to actually play it! So come in, sit down and let's "watch" some Atari 5200 games.

The physical comedy of this episode made me forget that it's supposed to be about the Atari 5200. I don't even care, this is one of the best AVGN episodes

For whatever reason, this is still one of my favorite episodes, if not THE favorite episode. I generally prefer the episodes where he talks about hardware instead of just games, maybe because he always has something fascinating to tell about said hardware, like it's history, technical aspects, stuff like that. I love it, it's like Gaming Historian with more swearing.

Reasons why it failed
1. Broken Controllers
2. the library was mostly 2600 games with better graphics, there was nothing really new
3. Over saturated market
all this, but respectfully disagree on "mostly 2600 games with better graphics". 5200 was my main console for the 80s, but of course i played a lot of 2600 at other people's houses. the 5200 controls (when the controller worked) were a LOT better, everything was smoother, you didn't have things flickering (example: defender, was much closer to the arcade, as was mrs pac man, and pac man. 2600 pacman was awful, nobody disputes this). super breakout was super smooth, and the sound was pretty rich for the time. it could have used a larger library, updated controllers (not controls though, they were nice. plus the non-centreing joystick was really a very good thing. you do NOT want pacman stopping when you need to shake your wrist) and oversaturation didn't help either

ESPECIALLY the lighting. Don't get me wrong, I like that James is continuing the tradition of mixing up the lighting, but there was something more intimate about it in the old days.

Another reason the 5200 failed, something James didn't mention, is that in the early 80's, the American consumer found the concept of upgrading a video game system after 3-5 years very alienating.
And then they turned back and it has started once again.
It's a miracle that this generation is so willing to do so despite the declining innovation

This is UA-cam. This is what you immediately think of whenever you hear the term. It's the Angry Video Game Nerd, and his reviews define the word "classic". Even though they are so simple by today's standards and the editing so primitive, they have a charm that will never be matched. The obsceneties spewed forth barely make any sense, but that's the whole beauty of it: he's just vocalizing our old frustrations with these games. The theme song? Just awesome. And the sparse setting just enhances the mood.

It is disappointing how most cartridges don't have end labels. But at least there might be a way to make labels and put it on top of any cartridge.
I wish consoles and PC's today would have some place where you can put your drink like that.
Some arcade cabinets I've seen have drink holders on the side. Very handy, I encountered a Marvel VS Capcom 2 cab with one of those.
Well too bad my town doesn't have arcades...
I've never seen a arcade machine that has a drink holder, and even though my town has places where you have birthday parties and also a place where it's only an arcade.

That's because he's a good director/producer, and not necessarily the most entertaining gamer. Anything that has a story to it he does very well.
The reason that box thing sparked was because you/h plugged in the AC Adapter to the wall so power was running through it when you/he plugged in the console so the power current immediately starting flowing to the console before the connection was sealed. There's a reason electronic devices/video game consoles always say plug the power in last. :)
I'm 22 and I still make that mistake with all sorts of electrical devices :(

Actually...I had a PS1 arcade stick that broke (it was a nice microswitch ball end joystick). I took it apart trying to fix it and realized it was done for...and I found that the joystick portion actually did make for a good buttplug. I'm being serious here...I'm an aficionado of all kinds of sex toys.

The answer is, who cares, it sucks. Kinda like the Sega 32X. You can claim even the Wii U comes close. I like it, but I can count the Wii U games I bought on my two hands. And I bought it on launch year. On the contrary, I bought a PS4 late 2016 and I already have well over 20 games.
