i think the main reason clinton restrained him from playing maggot brain on his own was the fact eddie is imaginative and could go on 2 hours jamming to this on a mothership straight into maggotland.
Maybe at certain points in the P-Funk journey... but the main, overarching reason was more a result of Eddie's drug problems, and the unreliability that comes with addiction.

Those records have stood the test of time. Go check out Low End Theory or Pete Rock and CL Smooth. All the funk players never criticise hip hop as they appreciate its a continuation of African American music that goes all the way back to the blues.

Excellently articulated, and, as clearly you do to, get so much more joy and connection from guitarists who have that instinctive, seemingly effortless ability to transmit their emotions flow through their guitar as Eddie displays here as well as he brilliantly did in the recording studio. Obvious name to mention I know but those exact traits is what to me still makes Hendrix stand apart from his peers such as Clapton, Gilmour, Page, Blackmore et al…all stupendous talents, even technically superior in certain aspects but there’s just that tiny bit missing that can’t be taught or imitated. Ernie Isley was another guy who had such a fluent , which playing a fair bit with Jimi probably helped unlock more of potential and give him confidence to play with more freedom. Then when now I’m getting names Freddie King, Albert King, Albert Collins, Johnny Guitar Watson, Buddy Guy, Robert Cray….maybe there’s a link here in some way?! 🤔😎 There’s many truly great exponents of the style in question regardless of colour or creed…two examples whom I admire greatly are Rory Gallagher and John Frusciante, with the latter being one of those rare guys that has reeled off the majority of his most beautiful solos in one take. Either way, his acoustic and electric guitar work on the RHCP ‘I could have lied’ displays everything your comment above says and I could listen to it on infinite repeat and never get bored!!
