The sheer amount of talent on this stage is overwhelming. This is one of the last performances that Bernard Edwards ever played in 1996--RIP. Slash is one lucky man to be next to and even fondled by Jill Jones--she is a goddess and I am in love with her. Thank God for Nile Rodgers. That is Omar Hakim on drums and Gerardo Velez on percussion (played with Hendrix@Woodstock.) WOW
We miss you Bernard and Tony. Thanks for The music and the memories.RIP. Nile your just a timeless American musical treasure who keeps bringing us great music.
"In 1996, on the night before Bernard Edwards suddenly and unexpectedly died of pneumonia, Chic performed “Le Freak” at Budokan in Tokyo, with Slash guesting on guitar." - Tom Breihan
Excellent version. For those die hard chic fans (of which I am one) the full bass lick is included in Slash's solo. It's great when two types of music merge. Both Chic and Slash made their bones in two different genres Bernie Edwards extremely sick at the time gave way to another soloist and it worked well. Slash was wonderful. I'd love to hear him play the lead in George Clintons "quickie" or Funkadelics "Not just knee deep". We need collaborations like this. We will always have the originals
Brilliant show. Their performance of 'chic cheer,' is very touching as Nile expresses his love of his best friend and it is clear BErnard is under the weather! RIP bernard, one of the most important bassists ever and a great musician.
I loved this song when younger and when listening to it now after many years i have such lovely memories aswell as it still moving me and groovy, thankyou
BAck in -79 this set me on my road to good music. Slash makes it good - all great tunes is like this can be remade in different ways and still sound good.
Man, this song STILL rocks; after all these years!! Yeah, that's dating me; but, I grew up on this kind of music. To me, it's some of the best rock bands ever!! XD
Slash is NEVER overrated.. and always improves upon any song, even a great such as this. And no real surprise - musicians know good music, regardless of genre.. he grew up hearing this good music same as the rest of us :)
Come on guys! This is THE CHIC! The GREAT Bernard Edwards on bass, his last show apparently. He died that very night after the show. Even the drummer is the original group drummer. Nile Rodgers is on GUITAR ;0)
If someone asks you what's so great about Slash, send him this video, cause it has some of Slash's most inspired and beautiful solo ever, it blended perfectly with the song.
There is an essence of truth in your talking when you relate that to rock and roll,of course those chords sounds heavily related to rock and rock...Thanks
@Drakkil : The base player is Bernard Edwards. He co-founder of CHIC. Just 2 days after the concert, he was found dead in his hotel room by Nile Rogers. It was really tragic. He still force himself to perform even he wasn't feeling well that night. He joke he got a Tokyo flu after being introduced by Nile Rogers on stage.
yeh true he seems to always be playing somewhere. Its great he loves it that much and not wasted his talent. Apparently he plays when watching tv playing along to the commercials
Idk y people didn't like slash, he tore it up from the floor up tore up. Man what talent!!! Chic nothing needed to be said about the group, just awesome! This style of music needs to be resurrected with a new spin of today's music
@s666r - That's the great Jill Jones. She used to sing backup for Prince. You can see her on Prince's '1999' video. She was also the blond waitress in "Purple Rain'.
What a show, Jill and Sylver so,so sexy , Slash putting in a big one and all held together brilliantly by Bernard and Niles. (So sad about Bernard) For me this was one of the all time greatest shows.
This is from their very last concert ever in Japan, not the USA. Just before this concert at the Budokan Arena in Tokyo, bass player Bernard Edwards fell ill, but despite Nile Rodgers' insistence, he refused to cancel the gig. He managed to perform but had to be helped at times. After the concert he retired to his hotel room where he was later found dead by Rodgers. The cause of death was ruled to be pneumonia.
that bassist is Benard Edwards who anchored the last great rhythm section in popular music, and indirectly watered the seed of hip hop. he very ill at the time of this gig, he died right after this show...watch what you say man...i luv u Benard & Tony..chic4life
I'm amazed. I thought Slash would piss all over this song, but he actually played a very tasteful and lyrical solo, fitting perfectly into the context of the song. Full high marks to him.
My 10 y/o son idolizes Slash and he loves his performance on this song. Of course, I had to school him on Nile Rogers and all his productions. Didn't the original drummer of Chic jam with Power Station?
I calmed my fever for this 2 beauties I learned that the beauty in the white pants is called "SYLVER LOGAN SHARP", singer from washinton , D.C, and the other beauty with the black pants is called "JILL JONES" and she was with "PRINCE" group, had a part in the movie "PURPLE RAIN" ( 1984) and had a small famed single hit "MIA BOCA"....... AND THEY ARE REALLY SINGING, they are not making any kind of phonomimics. They are true singers and true beauties.
Bernard Edwards died after this concert. Apparently he wasn't feeling well during a song, and sat down before passing out completely. And then came to and jumped right back into the groove. We'll never see another bass player like this guy.
@TonyBeazley You have excellent taste in music. Disco has a bad rap but this DVD is one of the finest live performances I have seen in years. It is true--they simply do not make music of this caliber nowadays.
This is a perfect example of how a definitive song becomes middle of the road, when it's put something trendy in the composition. To hear how incredible and RHYTHMIC, this song is without the out of place, inappropriate trendy guitar solo distorting it, checkout 'chic - freak out'.

One of Slash's greatest appearences!!
Amazing solo!
There´s not a single person - who loves music - in this world that doesn´t adore Chic! Even Slash? Of course he does!

Come on guys! This is THE CHIC! The GREAT Bernard Edwards on bass, his last show apparently. He died that very night after the show. Even the drummer is the original group drummer. Nile Rodgers is on GUITAR ;0)

Totalmente de acuerdo. Jill Jones espectacular, tan bella!!
If someone asks you what's so great about Slash, send him this video, cause it has some of Slash's most inspired and beautiful solo ever, it blended perfectly with the song.

do u have the next bit in the show? what does slash do in the rest of it?
well he is using seymour duncan 2 pickups and a wah pedal in that time frame. what you are hearing is the wah and the distortion of the wah.
The bassist has to be the coolest mother in the world!!!
WOW Slash actually added something to an already genius song.... shocked! :)
Old school disco and soul is awesome! And how can you not laugh at Slash's epic face at 4:22, hahaha
Awesome old Skool they don't play music like that no more!!!!

The girl in black's name is Jill Jones. She must be the hottest girl who has ever lived. She sang with Chic and later with Prince.
Dood, that song is a classic!!! Don't diss what you don't understand!
@ktwheels44 Wasn't Tony Thompson their original drummer? That guy was a machine.
@teesteven Slash is the former lead guitarist of Guns N' Roses and now Velvet Revolver, he als just released a solo album.
f**kn bass player, just chillin with a groove line and sunnies on what a life.
Bernard Edwards died after this concert. Apparently he wasn't feeling well during a song, and sat down before passing out completely. And then came to and jumped right back into the groove. We'll never see another bass player like this guy.

It shouldn't work Le Freak and Slash but it so does!
Really enjoyed this.
@huzza18 April 17 1996, Japan - Chic Live at the Budokan. They actually made a Live-Album which contains this concert.
Look at Bernard, my favorite bassplayer. I can not believe that he died short after this.....
R.I.P
