You might think the chance is 1/256. Not so fast. While unitialized RAM is random (you can never be sure) it's often not uniformly random. Because of how the chip is designed, half the bits might be closer to the ground connection and the other half closer to the +5 V connection and get pulled harder to 0 or 1. This varies between chip manufacturers and different memory areas of the chip. If for example that byte has a 80% chance of producing a 1 in any of the bits, the probability of producing the right value comes out to about .001% or about 1 in 100000.
NO WAY! This came up on my home page and I thought "Wow, Supper Mario Broth had a youtube channel and I never knew?" Then I checked and realized it's brand new and this is your first video! I'm looking forward to the future of this channel :)
There's at least a couple Mario spinoffs that are like that as well; in the first Wario Land, you activate it by pressing select 16 times on the pause screen, and in the GameCube version of Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, you activate it by pressing X, B, R, B, Y, L on the title screen (though all that one does is show the build date and display crash handlers).
As someone who’s enjoyed the paramount Supper Mario Broth blog for years, you’ve got a serious knack for curation and explanation. I hope you continue to build on these skills in video format, your eye for detail would take you in all the right directions. If I can offer anything it’s that Retro Game Mechanics Explained has some phenomenal behind-the-scenes recourses for workflow and editing techniques (namely “how it’s made” and the Q&A’s). Either way, thanks for the great Mario enthusiast content!
Holy fudging shizzle. This happened to me almost 30 years ago and I was blown away that pressing select would just change Mario's power up with no fanfare. Then the next time I tried it didn't work. This has settled a bizarre childhood memory for me now, thank you!
I KNEW IT!!! I had vivid memories of playing Super Mario All-Stars and having access to every power up on SMB3, like there'd be a button you could press and just switch them. I never got it to occur again, now I know why!!
Along with basically everyone else in these comments, I am delighted to see you on UA-cam! I can’t wait to see what interesting tidbits you’ll bring us here.
This short movie gives an important life lesson on why one day you may do something incredibly great, but on the next day youll forget how to do it and are completely unable to do what you just did :D
This makes me wonder then, three things. 1. Can this happen in the + Super Mario World version? 2. Can this happen on the Wii disc version? 3. Can this happen on Nintendo Switch Online’s version?
1. Yes, the same check exists in that version as well. 2. and 3. not sure, but this depends on how accurate the emulator included in those versions are. If they initialize RAM with random values, it could happen. If they initialize RAM with all zeros it can't happen. Knowing Nintendo, it's probably the latter.
This reminds me of last summer when I ground all chaos emeralds in Sonic 2 using the first starpost in the game. The Megadrive keeps the contents of RAM intact if you press the reset button (soft reset), and if you start the game from the options menu, it keeps some variables such as your emerald count intact. RGME also showed the interaction between Tetris and SMB1 regarding the level counter and "game cleared" flag.
Holy shit, so THAT'S why that happened! I knew it wasn't a game genie code, but I had distinct memories of being able to change forms with select. By the way, hi. I follow you on Tumblr too, didn't know you decided to brave this hellhole.

In theory performing ACE in another title to set that value and having it wait for a cartridge swap before reloading the new cartridge without resetting could be a persistent on-hardware way to achieve this without resorting to cheat tools.
Just by curiosity, can this happen in any of the other versions of Super Mario All-Stars, like the SNES version that includes Super Mario World, the Wii disc version, and the SNES Switch Online version?
