  • The complete song is in the comments. Here are the additional lyrics not sung in this version and related theological considerations:
Through the mad mystic hammering of the wild ripping hail
The sky cracked its poems in naked wonder
That the clinging of the church bells blew far into the breeze
Leaving only bells of lightning and its thunder
    1. The church bells join the natural apocalyptic chimes which are ringing for whom? Gal. 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control
Striking for the gentle, striking for the kind
Striking for the guardians and protectors of the mind
And the unpawned painter behind beyond his rightful time
And we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing
    2. Will you be a guardian and protector of minds (and hearts)?
    3. Will we support the artists who see beyond what is?
Through the wild cathedral evening the rain unraveled tales
For the disrobed faceless forms of no position
Tolling for the tongues with no place to bring their thoughts
    All down in taken-for-granted situations
    4. Holy hope is now unleashed upon its champions. Who are these champions of hope? Matt. 8:2 A man with leprosy[a] came and knelt before him and said, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.”
Tolling for the deaf an’ blind, tolling for the mute
Tolling for the mistreated, mateless mother, the mistitled prostitute
For the misdemeanor outlaw, chased and cheated by pursuit
An’ we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing
    5. Might these hopes even extend to lawbreakers? Luke 4:18 The Spirit has sent me
to proclaim freedom for the imprisoned and renewed sight for the blind.

Far between sundown’s finish an’ midnight’s broken toll
We ducked inside the doorway, thunder crashing
As majestic bells of bolts struck shadows in the sounds
Seeming to be the chimes of freedom flashing
    1. What are the original chimes that Dylan hears’? ‘Bells of bolts’
    2. Does the universe (represented by lightning and thunder) itself cry out for freedom? Romans 9:22 We know that the whole creation has been groaning in labor pains until now.
Flashing for the warriors whose strength is not to fight
Flashing for the refugees on the unarmed road of flight
And for each an’ ev’ry underdog soldier in the night
And we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing
    3. Who are the warriors who are strong enough to not fight? Matt. 5:39 But I tell you... if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also.
    4. How have we as a nation been treating the refugee/ foreigner? Matt. 2:13 Now after they had left, an angel appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, ‘Get up, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt.
In the city’s melted furnace, unexpectedly we watched
With faces hidden while the walls were tightening
As the echo of the wedding bells before the blowin’ rain
Dissolved into the bells of the lightning
    5. Walls tightening (gates closing) and faces hidden in defense and fear of what? Matt. 24:44Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour.
    6. What wedding is taking place? Matt. 25:1 "At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom.
Tolling for the rebel, tolling for the rake
Tolling for the luckless, the abandoned and forsaked
Tolling for the outcast, burnin’ constantly at stake
And we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing

    7. Who looks forward to those tolling bells and who will hide in fear? Matt. 25:40And the king/ bridegroom will answer them, “Truly I tell you, just as you fed/ visited/ healed one of the least of these, you did it to me.”

Through the wild cathedral evening the rain unraveled tales
For the disrobed faceless forms of no position
Tolling for the tongues with no place to bring their thoughts
    All down in taken-for-granted situations
    11. Holy hope is now unleashed upon its champions. Who are these champions of
hope? Matt. 8:2 A man with leprosy[a] came and knelt before him and said, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.”
Tolling for the deaf an’ blind, tolling for the mute
Tolling for the mistreated, mateless mother, the mistitled prostitute
For the misdemeanor outlaw, chased an’ cheated by pursuit

Even though a cloud’s white curtain in a far-off corner flashed
And the hypnotic splattered mist was slowly lifting
Electric light still struck like arrows, fired but for the ones
Condemned to drift or else be kept from drifting
    13. Do you know anyone condemned to drift? Or free-spirits kept from drifting?
Tolling for the searching ones, on their speechless, seeking trail
For the lonesome-hearted lovers with too personal a tale
An’ for each unharmful, gentle soul misplaced inside a jail
An’ we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing
    14. Do you know seekers struggling to find the(ir) Way? Anyone suffering from a broken heart?
    15. Will you ring chimes of freedom for them? How do we do that?
Starry-eyed and laughing as I recall when we were caught
Trapped by no track of hours for they hanged suspended
As we listened one last time an’ we watched with one last look
Spellbound an’ swallowed ’til the tolling ended
    16. Will you be caught up in the joy and laughter of hearing the universal chimes of freedom?
Tolling for the aching ones whose wounds cannot be nursed
For the countless confused, accused, misused, strung-out ones an’ worse
And for every hung-up person in the whole wide universe
And we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing
    17. And will you toll them yourself for the confused, accused, strung out and hung up?
Philippians 4:4 Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice.
5 Let your reasonableness be known to everyone.
The Lord is at hand; 6 do not be anxious about anything.
