Slash is just unreal. He’s so great at phrasing, building tension, working towards that explosive FIRE crescendo, etc. Amazing. Add to that his tone and how it sits in the mix. He uses the bass pickup to start to create that “full & round” sound, then switches to the treble pickup and gets that amazing, cutting tone. Just brilliant. The best song you almost never heard. Welcome to the Jungle was released as a single in 1987 and MTV/radio blacklisted GNR. About a year later Geffin Records had stopped promoting the album completely when GNRs manager begged David Geffin to call in a favor at MTV. They agreed to play it ONCE after midnight on a Sunday. MTV was inundated with requests and that's the how legends are made.

The true testament of the music of the 80s (give or take a few years outside on either end) is that FORTY YEARS LATER the music is still HOT. It’s still enjoyable and meaningful and moving and memorable. It makes people FEEL, and it makes people WISH they could have experienced it as it happened. Those of us lucky enough to actually live in that era, as children, as teens, as adults, we grew up in a world where anything was - or seemed - possible. LIFE WAS GOOD, for the most part. Most people would say that they’d go back there in a heartbeat. I know that I would; a much simpler kind of life… certainly not devoid of its own issues or complications, but a simpler, and more kind, kind of life. I miss those days.
