India is popular across the world as the land of ahimsa. Ahimsa is an important principle of Hindu dharma and is considered as one of the yama-s in yoga. The Sanskrit word ‘ahimsa’ is commonly translated into English as ‘non-violence’. But ahimsa is a very different concept from non-violence and it is important that people reject this mistranslation. Every sincere Hindu should understand its correct meaning without any confusion. Taking appropriate punitive or restraining action against criminals is also an act of ahimsa. In this video Babaji and Rajiv examine the concepts of ahimsa and non-violence to bring out the distinctions between the two.

Great video! Imagine what would’ve happened if instead of violently fighting, Rama decided to do non-violent satyagraha and bhook hadtal at Ravana’s door !! Present day political leaders have misused the word ahimsa and non-violence so much purely for their political interests !

I had always wondered if hinduism preaches non violence, why did Krishna say, toleration of injustice is also sin, meaning, if some one is violent should we tolerate it? There are lot of people who take advantage of other's decency. Is knowingly tolerating that is bravado or act cowardice in the garb of non violence? Today , i got my answer. Thank you, this is a most satisfying and enlightening video. Hope all confused individuals, families, communities and nations take note of this and walk on sri Krishna's path. Hope India finds its true Ksyatrias.

This is a very good explanation of Ahimsa. Ahimsa was a movement of Gandhi as perceived, but in reality it was facilitated the British. The reason is this. The had colonized many countries in Africa, in Southeast Asia and the Caribbean. Had India seized Independence using the SCB Way and the other colonies followed the same by seizing by military force, their would haven't been sufficient time to install puppet regimes in the colonies. Many Colonies which were in negotiations for their respective Independence, after 1947 had looked upto India for guidance. Malaya including Singapore, British Guiana, Trinidad and Tobago all sent delegations. They all returned home with the Congress Party's Gandhian Principles of Ahimsa as the best way to obtain Independence. Dr. Cheddi Jagan, Leader of the People's Progressive Party (PPP) of British Guiana beautifully captured his visit to India in his book WEST ON TRIAL when in October 1953, of the democratically elected self-Government, the Constitution was suspended and the leaders of the PPP were thrown in jail. After their release, Dr. Jagan decided to visit India, the country of the parents who had left India during an Indentureship of India laborers. Initially, he couldn't obtained a visa to travel to India. His visa was repeatedly rejected by India until The Hindu Newspaper of Madras intervention. The Congress Party knew that Dr. Cheddi Jagan was from the Kurmi Caste and he was uncomfortable how India Caste System must have possibly played heavily for his visa repeated rejections. Indian Congress Party was more interested in selling the idea of Non-Violence struggle. Dr. Kenneth Kaunda spoke about a similar experience before Zambia's Independence and meeting with Prime Minister J. Nehru.
Many African leaders ignored Ahimsa and took up arm struggles; they M.K. Gandhi was British puppet.

I am no scholar, but we were made to believe, it was prudent for indians to adopt non violence and total boycott of British goods at that point as it would have been impossible for divided india and a militarily weaker India to take on British.

Christians should not convert non-Adamic race Dravidian Pagan Hindus to Judaism and to Christianity. Because conversation means salvation for Adam's race. Non-Adamic faith comes from non-Adamic race. Jesus Christ said in the Bible Matthew 7:6 Do not give dogs what is holy; and do not throw your pearls in front of pigs, or they may trample them and then turn on you and tear you to pieces.

Educate Hindus. Conversion is at the lowest level of the caste ladder. You should help break this hereditary cast-iron system and allow your children to marry inter-caste, Hindus of lower caste. Would you?
In Tamil Nadu children born to dalit families are not privileged to sit with Children of higher caste at school. Tamil Nadu has schools only for Children of lower and dalit communities. Come with me to Hindu Temple City of India, Kanchipuram and I will show you where, why and how conversion is done. Also in Kanpur, Panjab, West Bengal. DON'T BLAME CHRISTIANS OR MUSLIMS FOR HINDUS' DILEMMAS. BLAME IT ON YOURSELF. WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO CHANGE CONVERSION. MANY DALITS ARE NOT POOR; THEY WANT RESPECT. THEY WANT THEIR CHILDREN TO ATTEND BETTER SCHOOLS. EVERY WORKING JEW DONATE FOR THE JEWISH CAUSE; HOW MANY HINDUS DONATE FOR A HINDU CAUSE.

Wow this is so much important. Totally agree with Rajiv sir about bringing ksyatria in this era.
    That's very important.
All the Indians should be trained to be eloquent and fluent in Sanskrit and indic education system, trained in Indian martial arts too as it is important to develop dignity and also for self protection.
Sometimes looking at this younger generation in India really worries me, they are so proud getting into westernization and western social media selling their identity and pride to fellow white men.

The issue is, there are no equivalents to some words. So we should not use or even think of the equivalents but proudly use the Sanskrit word in whatever language we are speaking. People generally feel small when they cant translate a word, but they shouldn't. The culture that produces a certain language may not have the experience of another culture that produces another language. So if we cant translate into english french etc, we shouldn't feel bad/small. we should explain what it means to the person concerned and then continue using the Sanskrit word. That's the message of this series (and book: Sanskrit Non-Translatables).

Regarding the issue of Himsa / Ahimsa, I wish to add: (1) If I desire to transfer one rupee from your pocket to mine without giving back something equivalent to one rupee, that is also himsa, (2) The only way to avoid war is to be fully prepared for war at short notice, (3) Mohandas Gandhi was selective in his choice of non-violence. He did not even condemn the unimaginable cruelty Muslims unleashed on Hindus in the Moplah riots of 1921 and the massacre of Hindus in Bengal just before creation of Pakistan in 1947, (4) The skewed interpretation of Ahimsa started after Emperor Ashoka who advocated total pasifism after the Kalinga war.

    Namasthê;
Sholomo Lachman below, says: “Bhagawada Gita is not a Book of non-Violence, it's a Book of War, the Preparation for War”.
Books on Sanâthana Dharma have an intelligent arrangement; in that the beginning and end words, summarizes the contents of the book. In Bagavad Gîthâ, the start word is “Dharma” and end word in “Mama”. = the book tells me what my Dharma is = how I can chip away the portions that does not belong to me = get rid of the foes = the six vices; bewilderment of Arjuna is the same faced by all human beings; the war is not to kill human beings outside; it is the enemy within that has to be slain; it does if some nasty human being/s are waging a war, physical, psychological against my Dharma, I must run away.
Such nasty human beings must be taught a lesson; in that context a person/s practicing Dharma “MUST” recognize the foe and respond, not react. War is the option when all three previous steps have failed.
    Namasthê; Samastha Lôkâ Sukinô Bavanthu.

Think after the Act / Expression, or Be after the Act / a result, is Hinsa, a mediocre method. Ahimsa is "to Hold on" before the Expression. Think before the Act - seems to be apt than just about violence or killing etc etc. Subjective is definition here. Objective is after the subject is clear!!!

Because our history propoganda is that we got independence because non violence which completely misleading.westners(uk) have vested interest in telling that look we gave you freedom non violence by Gandhi really shakes us but they want to whitewash role of revolutionary and INA sacrifices.gandhiji God status has come down we should see him as great man with good and bad attributes.

Hindus are suffering every day in Pakistan and Bangladesh because of Gandhi. He should be held accountable.

I do not agree with when one says violence of small degree is need to restrain a violence of higher degree .
How can one be the better judge of it ?
It does take a very mature and very stable mind. Like Krishna .
Violence for greater good should be last resort.
So we say Saama dhana bheda danda
