great video. thank you very much for sharing. I just got an Orion 32+ and it definitely requires some time to fully understand the routing. But it is definitely an upgrade.
I am still having issues with presets. After saving a preset and assigning to a knob on the front panel, I can't recall it. it reverts to the default preset. When I load it from the console, it is fine. Anyone has similar issues ?

I've been following your videos on the Antelope Orion 32+ Gen 4.
I would like to know if it is possible to record with 48V microphones via the DB25 cable.

If I may share a story. This is by no means to bash Antelope, but it's just meant to be informative mostly, and I've never shared it before much. Just a precursor, I have buddies using Antelope interfaces that work great for them, and seen high end Antelope Clocks, and Converters in studio's that worked great for the studio, but interfaces are the main topic I'm writing on here....I wanted my Antelope to work out so much, but it just didn't go down like that. Here's the story.
I got the 32+ Mk1 when I got my first good interface thinking how awesome is that. 32x32, other I/O, and pretty damn good conversion etc.
All it did was ruin a year of my life. It's funny because for years I'd read on forums that people would say the same kind of things, but Antelope would reply, or they would comment about Antelope in the end would basically just throw their hands up, and say I guess you need a different computer, or that they were mad they were stuck with this thing that didn't work type stuff, but even I was like, nah, it's gotta be user error to some extent, and like I was saying, I know people that own their interfaces with no issues, so I got brave, and got one.
For me, from the beginning, the thing would click, and pop in sessions, cause sessions to freeze, and also the software would act super buggy, and do really strange stuff, and on maybe 1 session a week, I would somehow make it through, and those would be the miracle days I'd call them.
Also, I previously used 2 other interfaces with this computer that worked fine, including 2 more these days. I've used a Roland Octopre, a Focusrite Clarett, and now I have a UA x8p, and an Apogee Symphony MK2. Not one of those has had an issue, and worked just fine. Oh, I did actually have one other cheaper interface that would actually do very similar things as the Antelope would, and that got sent back. It was like a $300 interface, but I got it when I had my previous Computer. Also, just mentioned that last interface just because it's a fact, not to hint at anything in particular.
So, I literally was back, and forth with Antelope support for like 6-8 months, and it was just hilarious. They started out with the usual beginner stuff, and it would be like, ok no, that's not the issue, but spent a month, or two going through all the obvious stuff with them. Like I wanted to get to the bottom of this case, and why so many people for years would be literally stuck with something that didn't work, or figuring out ways to live with it, like having to go to Madi etc(just stuff Ive heard)...Anyway, then every week for a few months they would wanna hop on my computer, and dig around, and uninstall files, and folders, reinstall files etc etc... I had to wipe my whole computer, and start from scratch, nope, no answers. Still didn't work. Then it basically just got to the point that they would just act stumped. We even ruled out that it was the hardware, because I tried it on three different Macs all within their list of compatible. Didn't work with my main Mac, worked on my old Mac, but it was like 9 years old at that point, and didn't work with my buddies lap top(his was in between my two in year).
So, **** here's the big kicker ***. I even had my main support guy at the end of it all tell me over the phone that it is something on their end, and he's sick of pretending it must be user error, or blaming it on the persons computer(when it's inside of their compatibility specs). He basically said it was definitely something to do with their driver's, or software i dunno, he didn't say exactly what, and said he was nervous to even tell me that much. I think he just saw how hard I was trying to see this through, and felt like he couldn't lie to me anymore.
MyI dunno if it's someone there taking shortcuts, or they tried to bypass certain licensing stuff, but it's gotta be some combination of some or all of these things---->firmware/software/licensing somehow, and that they rolled it out for so many people, and dug themselves into a corner, and feel like they can't go back, because that also means if they do come out of the closet, or just fix it somehow, that would be coming out to millions of people they've already screwed over who got stuck with these things. Like I dunno, my guess is as good as anyone else's who's been through this, but this is all more about Antelope, and not coming clean. Like if they would have somehow just started being real in the beginning that's one thing, but people spend thousands on these, Antelope just goes" well, it's your problem now, and it's def not us" , and they can say that only because they can go" look, it's working for that guy". So, I think they just kinda would lie by omission. Also, another example is, my music store took mine back, even past the warranty, because they saw the proof, but even they got stuck with it, and ended up selling it second hand.
Years later, going back to a few years ago, I joined a small online group of Engineers/creators, like 10-12 of us. One guy actually ended up working with Antelope, and endorsing them. I told him my story, and he was just like okay sure, mines fine. Then not long after, he started getting a bunch of issues. He said he was gunna work with them to show them whats wrong, and believed Antelope would have his back, and he wanted to help them, because he believed in their potential. I mean they are making some of the best Interfaces out there when it comes to I/O at least, and very good conversion, but I think he eventually gave up, and felt betrayed a bit. Anyway, I dunno who will actually read all this, but lemme know your thoughts. And like I said, this isn't to bash them, and if your Antelope is working great, amazing. Maybe they have finally fixe'd things, but it seems like this is a theme I've been seeing for years, and years now. I even found out Antelope used to be a company called Ardvark, and that company had similar threads, and just went under way long ago.

Thanks for the video! I have a question. I'm running an Orion Studio 2016 right now and it basically doesn't work with windows (11). The software is too old and not updated and it cannot run the mixer section. I want to sell it and upgrade to a newer model, but I'm in doubt. Can I use this as a patch bay? I see your examples but none of them show if it's possible to take a analog input (synth), send it through the machine to an analog output (i.e. to a compressor) and back into the unit via another analog input. It looks like this is possible, but will the signal then go through 2x A/D (D/A) conversion? Would it make sense to get this unit if I can also get an RME UCFX which also simply has the option for external processing with an insert straight from your daw (but at the expense of going through one cycle of A/D D/A for every analog processing unit)? Or does the orion32+ actually function as a digitally controlled analog patch bay, where the signal goes from the analog input (synth) to the analog output (compressor) directly (as in a patch bay) and then finally when it comes from the compressor and is routed into the DAW only then goes through A/D conversion?

    • @fadygergis
      @fadygergis  Місяць тому

Any interface that offers patch routing will always do it through conversion.
Same for the RME and the Orion.
If your biggest thing is having patch bay without conversion then you are better off without interface.
Another thing to consider if the converters are clean then you should be fine having multiple conversions happening. It’s only an issue when converters aren’t that great.

I think Antelope had one of the best routings I've seen and used. Sound quality is great and has some very good plugins (when they work).
Unfortunately due to driver and plugins stability, my Orion Studio is used as a 12ch preamp when are needed extra inputs. Cannot relay on it as a main studio interface.
