Every block had a garage band. Walking a mile down Logan Street in Denver you would hear ten bands practicing in open garages. Music was everywhere. Go to Washington park on a Saturday in 1968 and there were 5 to 10 thousand free souled kids playing frisbee, smoking herb, playing guitar and celebrating LIFE. Van Morrison's music was part of those gatherings. Morrison is a HOLY MAN to my generation. May time bless his soul with music FOREVER.
back in the 1960s just about all local bands or garage bands played this song. just 3 chords i think and nothing too complicated. a great song to learn for young teenage rockers. it was a magical time, to be young back then.

When I was a kid, my dad and I would sing along to this.....very badly.....in the car when it came on the radio. Probably one of the best songs to come out of the 60's. The Doors did a great version of this too (its out there someplace) and Jim Morrison just did what Jim Morrison does best, and I am pretty sure it's a fairly long live jam (correct me if I'm wrong). I love that version almost a little more....maybe because it's a little dirtier, haha. Jim had no filter whatsoever, haha.
June 2-18, 1966 - The Doors open for Them with Van Morrison for a two week engagement at the Whisky. The very last night before Van and his crew went back to Ireland they all played “Gloria” together. John Densmore talked about it in his book, remarking that it was one of the most memorable experiences for him. He said it was one of the greatest times of his life to be on stage with 2 drummers, 2 guitarists 2 keyboard players and 2 Morrisons. Amen to that!
@@franksmathers7742 : Jim Morrison has much less merit than Van Morrison to sing this song. One cannot compare the year 1964 with the year 1967 when Jim sings it. Jim's performance (whom I love) is much less valuable than Van Morrison's.

.... Originally a B-side o' : "Baby, please don't go" recorded in 1964 and written by Big Joe Williams in 1935. On this last song, Jimmy Page plays rhythm guitar. But hushhhhh, very few people know that. My friend, you are named after a great singer and blues musician who was the first after the authentic Pope of Blues : Alexis Korner, to introduce the Blues to the English in 1961. And during the first six years, the greatest musicians played in his band 'fore they were known like : Eric Clapton at the age of nineteen, John McVie (Fleetwood Mac' bassist), Mick Fleetwood (Fleetwood Mac' drummer), Jack Bruce (Cream' bassist and former Jazzman), Peter Green (Fleetwood Mac, a God of a guitarist), Mick Taylor (Stones' lead guitar, hundred times better than this bum puppet of Keith Richards), Aynsley Dunbar (drummer, he was very upset 'bout being fired by J. Mayall, strict an' severe who forbade his musicians to drink and take drugs, so Aynsley formed a band called Aynsley Dunbar Retaliations), Fito de la Parra (Canned Heat' drummer), Larry Taylor (Canned Heat' bassist), Keef Hartley (drummer, he was fired also, then he formed the goup Keef Hartley Band), Le Grand Sonny Landreth (slide guitar), Coco Montoya (lead guitar) Albert Collins' guitarist leaves J. Mayall to replace Bob "the bear" Hite who died, Joe Yuele (drummer), Don "Sugarcane" Harris (devil, devil, devil violonist. At the time he was in prison. So J. Mayall paid the prison governor to let him out just long enough to record), Harvey Mandel (amerikan guitarist who played wi' Canned Heat), Jerry McGee (amerikan guirarist who founded group : The Ventures in 1968), Hughie Flint (drummer from group McGuinness Flint), Bernie Watson (guitarist in 1963-64), Roger Dean (lead guitar. Then he left the band and became a VERY GREAT illustrator of vinyl covers. He created 106 covers for many bands. For example, he designed the covers of all the albums of the band: Yes, that are 29 covers. In 1969 wi' the Lp : "the turning point", J. Mayall abandons the classic scheme of the formation to play the Blues to integrate into his new group a flute and an acoustic guitar, played respectively by Jon Mark and by Johnny Almond. These two are great an' famous solo musicians but sometimes joined forces to create the famous duo : Jon Mark & Johnny Almond. If you don't know 'hem, I won't talk to ye anymo' an' I'll bite yer liver bone wi' anger. It's simple, J. Mayall was the boss and for each record he changed musicians. He must have recorded 67 albums but only the first 6 (officials) are of great value plus 4 albums recorded 'fore his first official Lp in 1966 'bout confidential older recordings as : "John Mayall plays John Mayall" & "Diary of a band" & "Don't look back" & "the Blues alone". The 33 Lps left you can throw 'hem away or play freesbee wi'. Yet he's a great blues singer he has formulated to dedicate his entire life to the Blues. He has a beautiful, plaintive voice made for the Blues an' he plays good mouth harp and guitar and organ and piano. His master is the Bluesman J.B. Lenoir. But alas, e'en despite his first passion for the Blues coupled with his pure and authentic approach for it, which earned him the enmity and the diversion of young ignorant English people in 1966, this generated in 1967 his second Lp entitled: "Crusade" , like hundreds o' poor inhabitants of the earth, he let himself go easily, lost his inspiration and above all, took himself for someone, he fell into the trap of making music for the money. If you already know him, and since you also know Clapton, then listen to 2 gems never released on vinyl because they were only released as a single in 1966. They are of great beauty. The titles are : "Telephone Blues" & "I'm yer witch doctor". Well, my friend, yewh John Mayall, sign a cover of your records for me....

This is what I call genuine Punk Music, no wonder it was the best song in Patti Smith's album 1975, New York
Patty le puso más talento ❤
Always loved this always will absolutely brilliant.😎
Motown was fine than here come the English 1965
Love it my Irish grampa named me beautiful Mom Gloria!! Van... Them, love it thank you!
Another fucking idiot with "English"
GREAT. One of the best beat-rockers ever!!!
Vu
How can some people not To adore this song
Maybe they just like rap
Tone deaf maybe
When I was young this would come on the radio all the time.
Now I had to search all over for it.
back in the 1960s just about all local bands or garage bands played this song. just 3 chords i think and nothing too complicated. a great song to learn for young teenage rockers. it was a magical time, to be young back then.
@James Ayers rap is crap💩
A super song that has nothing lost of his magic!
WOOOOOOOOW!Fantastic,Great Voice,Splendid,Famous Song by THEM!Put a smile on my face & makes me feel happy!Many Thanks!💖🎸🎸🎸💗🎙🥁🎹🌞🌞🌞💞🎶💙💛💜👌👍✌

Great Memorie 🤷♀️I’m 14 Years, my Brother listen, listen GLORIA from this Band, and I’m like this song💕🎶
Awesome, timeless, priceless !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So true ! People still search for that kind of music ❤️🙏
@@pleun315 The search would be successful if they would just look to the past.
@@alonenjersey no....ofcourse not. Van and other big names still make new songs 😂
Van Morrison and Them do a great job with this song, Shadows Of Night also did a great cover.😊😊
this is good music
Yes, "this" "is" "really" "music"
Ooo yes😎🤠
True
One of the greatest rock songs, look at all the great covers by Jimi Hendrix, the Doors, and Patti Smith to name a few!
Jim's version is a bit more risque than Van's version - but hey - that's what the Lizard King did !!!
@@franksmathers7742 : Jim Morrison has much less merit than Van Morrison to sing this song.
One cannot compare the year 1964 with the year 1967 when Jim sings it.
Jim's performance (whom I love) is much less valuable than Van Morrison's.
Love it my Irish grampa named me beautiful Mom Gloria!! Van... Them, love it thank you!
Have heard this all of my life and never knew it was Van Morrison
Van Morrison's Astral Weeks just blows me away everytime. Them were a brilliant band. This is a great track. Originally a b-side.
Astral Weeks is one of the greatest albums ever recorded … sharing the podium with Rubber Soul, Let It Bleed & A Salty Dog 🌟
@@daveharris2 Astral Weeks is real treasure of an album. I also love Rubber Soul and Let It Bleed is the Stones at their peak. From Gimme Shelter, 1 of my all time favourite tracks, right through to You Can't Always Get What You Want. ✌️

Absolute truth ❤️🙏
Ca tournait en boucle sur les juke box... waou !
Even as a young fella, Van the Man had it down. Glad we can listen to it.
Ah yes, one of my most loved bands of that era - The "Them"
When I was with the 4 Shadows, we did this a lot....it was one of the best rockers of the mid sixties
Can still hear this somewhere in Great Victoria Street..back then. Great city so much talent ..then and now.
I love this song!!
The little guy, about 4? Huge eyes...clapping cut Daddy told him to- I wonder if he grew up to be a Van Fan? So cute, unexpected in this atmosphere- great start in life- Van Morrison is STILL one of the greatest...
Special memory for you
I love the little kid in the plaid shirt clapping along ....in almost perfect time!
Great video of an old rock n roll classic.
Thanks for uploading.

Here in 'down under' Gloria was the B side to THEM's first single. Gloria became the bigger hit possible because of its lyrics. Side A - Baby Please Don't Go - a great song too faded somewhat.
I just stumbled over Them today. Holy Moly!! Van has always been one of the best in my book!!
Brings back memories. Love it

1963 at Washington Intermediate School in Hawaii, this song was the rage and as cutting edge as you could go in those days! Great song!!!
And thus thousands and thousands of garage bands were launched.
@socal rocks So true. Yet, this is just seems more elemental.
not 1 was launcher=d due to this
Had neighbor "boys" (at one time. lol) lived down the road and we could hear them pratice this song many Friday nights.
@@FashonbugWA That's because there are only three chords in the whole song, and the sequence of the three chords never vary.
Also had a huge influence in the punk movement a decade later lol. This song is so fucking great it's nuts!
I'm from New Castle Pennsylvania Marty Daugherty he used to be the lead singer with the Illusions he taught me the chords to that song I'll never forget it
Un "classique" indémodable !
MET VAN MORRISON IN A SMALL CLUB NORTH OF SF ... 'THE INN OF THE BEGINNING', HED WORK HIS NEW TUNES THERE, F'CKIN INCREDIBLE! IM GUESSING 50-75 SEATS. WHAT A TALENT!
OK A HUNDRED PER CENT FROM "THEM " AND MITHIC GLORIA BEAUTIFUL SONG.THANKS

My first job singing rock and roll was "Gloria". It is still in my "repish-i-tor".
The original and best version.👏

How glorious could be your mum taking you to see a certain band called Them to play a set of classics instead to some local playground! Thanks mum forever!
Had the same experience when I was 10 years old … my mother took me to see The Beatles at Sydney Stadium in 1964. Thanks mum!! 🌟🎶
My mom took me to see Chuck Berry, Bobby Darin, and The Coasters at Dick Clark's Beechnut Gum Show in New York City when I was 10 years old. I'm 75 years old now and still get goosebumps when I think about Chuck doing that duck walk across the stage.
Great, fantastic super song and hit!!! That`s MUSIC!!!!
