Torque spec on water pump bolts for all Toyota 20R and 22R engines is 9 foot pounds. They should be tightened in 2 steps. Tighten until you get a little resistance, in a cross pattern. Start at one "corner" then go across the pump to the other corner for the next bolt, and so on. Second step is using the torque wrench set to 9 foot pounds, again using the cross pattern. I've done several this way and never had any leaks or problems.

Just wrapped up doing the water pump on my '93 22RE Hilux.
Thanks to you and yours for taking the time and putting in the effort ("...I'm *tirred* of this...") to make this video. It helped a bunch -- largely by making me see it as doable by myself.
    Cheers!

Thank you for the video. I just sat behind my husband as he changed out the radiator in his Toyota pickup. After he finished we realized that the truck is now leaking from the water pump. I hope that it is just the paper thing. Anyway thank you for making the next project look doable.

The water pump nuts and bolts are not called out with a direct torque specification, therefore it defers to the standard bolt specifications in the introduction section of the FSM (IN-18-19). The markings on the bolt and the use of a washer classify them as 6T hexagon flange bolt. With this information the toque table indicates the 6mm bolts (and nuts) should be torqued to 78in-lb (6.5ft-lb) and the one 8mm bolt should be torqued to 180in-lb (15ft-lb). Note that the long 8mm bolt engages steel not aluminum.
If you are replacing the thermostat, the torque called out on page EG-234 is 14ft-lb; however the same bolts are covered on page EG-236 with a torque callout of 9ft-lb.

Is there threads through the Timing chain cover itself? my bolt broke.
Did you have same problem? it looks like the hole in pump (where 12mm bolt was removed (largest bolt in Water Pump) is drilled?

Special note kids, the mating surfaces of the water to the engine block must be dull and not polished surface. The concept is that the surface must be "a bit rough" to allow the gasket to have something to grab onto for a better seal

You make replacing a water pump look not so complicated. You seem to have done this in minimum time. Why is my mechanic suggesting that changing the pump and gasket will cost me 1600.00? Does that sound correct?

    • @earthscraper69

i have 91 hilux and did the water pump a few years back, water pump was something well under $200 can't remember exactly but $120 comes to mind and I can see them for that price on ebay, thermostat $25 or so, coolant $40? a friend and i took out old one and flushed radiator and put all back together in 2 or 3 hours (at leisurely pace). So mechanic could may be be expected to charge less than $500 for aftermarket replacement parts and labour to fit. If it's genuine parts I don't know. I'm talking Aussie dollars btw. I'm assuming you are NOT talking rupee or yen or something. good luck.

How do you tell your old water pump was bad or good.
    My old one turns fine......
I bought a new one, anyway, 1977 toyota truck pick up, 20R.
But long time ago watched your video bought gasket was not BRAVE to attempt putting new gasket on old leaky water pump gasket.
Eventually leak got BAD......O'Reilly's said buy new pump.
I went to put new pump in then saw it had an extra bolt hole, where my old pump did not.
FREAKED out, got my gasket I bought rubbed sealant B4 replacing bolts old pump cleaned up like new.
Next morning started up but engine got HOT fast. New coolant all that good to go......I thought.
O'Reilly's said get new thermostat fail safe. Mine was only 2 years old, bought new fail safe. Old one spring easy to move think it was good.
👌 got new pump but it had extra bolt hole but figured it would not matter because old pump had solid metal there just put sealant all over again.
New pump leaked out as soon as I put NEW COOLANT in. My old one did not with new gasket. But engine heated up.
Switched a couple bolts around got better......still leaks here and there top & bottom.
I think I need to put sealant thicker cuz I did that putting old pump in, NO LEAKS.
But I do not understand how to KNOW water pump is BAD.
My problem was like yours old gasket disintegrated for sure thought it would not over heat so fast. Old cleaned up like new, turned inside fan and pully fan connection together synchronized.
But I did not then replace the thermostat.
Now nobody can get gasket....so I will have to make one........
Would you use the old cleaned up water pump or new one with extra hole.
The extra hole is to the right of the bigger center screw near the pully fan connection, like yours.
    Hope to read your reply.
    💋😘
