This video was very detailed, it needed to be. I’m 66 years old. That balance point info may someday be pounded into my thick head. I’m just such a coward as far as leaning back going up the lip.
I’m trying to understand and learn this shit at 57 and I’m addicted but I suck at getting any height. Some fundamental details in here for me on the technique that nobody else I’ve watched has shared. Good stuff! Thx.
Ive been watching your videos and trying to make myself fo what you say but have been struggling for months. I finally figured it out yesterday. You cant drive your heels into the ground if you don't lean back counter weighting the bars, at least you cant once your front wheel leaves the lip. If you aren't leaned back against the bars, you cant continue to drive your feet into the transition once the wheel is off the lip. It actually feels like doing a mini manual, but starting it at the exact same time your front wheel leaves the lip. And you cant manual / extend your legs and drive your feet forward unless you lean back and pull on the bars. Its a similar feeling but going off of the lip. Thanks man, Ive heard what you said in all of your jump videos but couldn't get my body to do it until i understood that.
This is an eye opener for me. I'm 61 and thought it was my old body not reacting fast enough to clear jumps, but I see now I've been making the same mistake as the first random rider.
I think the reason we struggle with this is that subconsciously we know this will work; that it will do exactly what we want. So, we shy away which feels less scary and suck it all up into our chest. Timing that well leads to a decent racing scrub. Timing that badly leads to a bucked dead sailor.
Nice to see someone approximately my age learning technique! As soon as I finish building my mtb, I will be working on my bunnys, j hops, and how to exit said bike off the back should I overdo it! The weather's not too bad here to practice! Thanks Dusty for the useful tips and tricks!
Great analysis. In the end, when you know what to do, its pretty much thinking heels down and torso back on the lip. Pointing fingers down is a jumping killer, weight goes forward and its over. Thumbs up!
Nice helpful breakdown. I was looking at some of my jump videos, and I'd say I've improved. I keep back enough to keep my front wheel from dropping. I stay fairly neutral though, I don't get that extra height or have much of the explosion motion.
Comparing frame to frame is extremely helpful kudos to You! I am now the "black (second) bad rider" - an improvement no doubt, as over 20 years of XC has trained my body to stick to the handlebars (like a white cyclist) and I have found it extremely difficult to overcome old habits. But how can I make it even better? Is practicing J-hop/bunny-hop the answer to the transition from "black bad rider" to "orange shredder"?
Can you give feedback on the delayed front wheel lift? I see alot of people do it, I do it a lot too, where you go off the lip of the jump, then about halfway through you pull the bars to your chest/hips, causing the front wheel to rise, then roll the bars forward to match the landing. Is that bad practice?
If you learn to do this well on an HT (it’s the same technique) you’ll be even better when you get your full-suss. Think pump-track and BMX to believe I might be correct.

I’m learning also in my 50s- I take mtb lessons regularly and session the same jumps to progress as safely as possible- have fun 🤟
The best jump instruction I’ve found. Your videos are super helpful.
Wow, thanks!

This is an eye opener for me.

Glad we could help. Keep shredding
Wow! What a breakdown. Super helpful. Thank you for the effort in creating and posting this video. Top notch!!
Glad it was helpful!
Your video editing skills are almost as good as you biking ones, Dusty! Very helpful video!
Wow, thanks!
Thanks for superimposing the two jumps

In depth, a lot of slo-mo. Great jumping manual
Awesome video as usual. I like the side to side comparison to see the benefit of leaning back.
What a great vid. Love the way you’re developing your editing: it’s a great addition, thanks 😊 And the outro was fab 🎉
Thanks so much! 😊
Excellent video bro.
Much appreciated
Great vid. Learning more jump tips with every new vid!
Glad to hear it!
It's a pretty good idea to overlay these videos and fade them in and out to see the differences...good job...i would like to see more in this style...
Thanks! Will do!
Subscribed! Well done. Clear video that is so helpful. More on the steeper jumps would be great! Where will you be through the winter?
Thanks for the sub!
I’ll be on the east cost. Most likely kanuga area
Great comparison and breakdown. I'm sure that answers a lot of questions for people
Thanks man
Your videos and rad! Thanks for making great content. That shirt is awesome. Are you going to sell Shred Academy merch?
Not sure yet, i have had it before but sold nothing. Maybe I’ll do a small batch see how it goes
@@Theshredacademy Make sure to do a 2XL, I want to be wearing it when riding!

AWESOME video, great editing. Keep going we have all winter to get through!
Thanks! Will do!
Nice comparison videos, I need to put this into reps. Thanks
Please do!
Your awesome keep it up!
Much love keep shredding
great stuff! subscribed!

I think you've found a new angle in a crowded marketplace. What about some shots of your dog? Thanks for the vid'. Good luck.
Great idea

This one and a lot are filmed at Ride Kanuga in Hendersonville NC
Same principles for a ht ?? 43 and learning but don't own a full squish 😁 (yet!)

Same thing, less effort. Ht don’t loose energy in the transition. Stay tuned new video on the subject very soon
In a van ... err .. what about moving to warmer location during the 'winter' period ?
