Hi I'm in the UK and I was absolutely dreading doing this job on my Vauxhall Corsa 1.4 turbo however after watching the video carefully I cracked on with it and you made what looked like a terrifying job a lot easier to do so for that I thank you greatly. I also appreciate the time you've taken to help DIY mechanics like myself and others. Best regards Neil.
Thank you for comprehensive detailed information. I am a level 3 Toyota technician with 49 years experience working on many types of vehicles in England UK. So not being very familiar with this particular engine I searched for more information and your video is by far the best and most informative.Good job.
Fantastic video. I'm from the UK with a Vauxhall Corsa with the same engine. I'm not a mechanic and after lots of research and following this video with others I replaced head gasket, all timing components and clean up the valve train at the side of a main road. Works great now.
Hello from London England, I have to say thank you for this wonderful video. We recently replaced a timing chain on a 2016 Vauxhall Mokka and your video was very helpful and your explanation was spot on. Many thanks.
I am from the u k I am a mechanic. I have done plenty of the older engines. On corsadbut was apprehensive. About the newer engine. But after watching your video which I found very helpful. It is not much different to the old engine very helpful video thank you
Working at OPEL in Germany. I can tell you from now on we always pull off the oil pan, reason is the timing cover is not guided by the bolt but by the oilpan. The cover will never be in the right place again causing the oil pump to not fit dead center in the middle of the hole down there. Everything back together and either it makes a horrible siren sound right after the job or a few months after. End of the story is a broken pump and cover, happend a few times now. Replacing those and putting the oil pan last is the solution to that problem. What an awful design they did there.
Thank you for this video you’re the only one I’ve found that shows how to time the cam phasers this is going to save me a lot of work not having to tear the whole engine down again to time the phasers thanks I’m from ohio
I agree with James Reed. I did all of this myself but the timing tool kit I got had no instructions with it so, as you said, because there was more than one position to install the pulse generator wheel I wasn't certain I had it correct until I saw your vid. Thanks.

And i May do this again because i lost some power and hearing noise againg when the engine is cold. I think i used a very cheap new parts. Next time it won't be so. This is the best video i've seen until now. ..
Excellent video. I just pulled the head off, antifreeze in cylinders 2 and 3. Nice to see exactly how this timing goes back together. I don't think you could have made a better video. The video is right where you need it and great quality along with very informative. Thanks.
Great help thanks. I replaced the head gasket on a Opel / vauxhall astra and have cam position sensors codes come up. I used the locking pins and adjuster tool, but somethings not right, going to strip down and readjust this weekend. Thanks for the thorough guide, this is a big job without having to film it! By the book is with sump removed. This is risky, if the timing case isn't centered on the Crank, the oil pump can whine and you have to take the whole thing off again. Qq

Very helpful video, thank you so much. Hi I’m from Kingston upon Hull, England I’ve done loads of these chains even more on the older Engines basically the same engine just modernised I love how simple they are.
This is a very great video for a common repair on these engines. Overall this repair is very involved, and pretty time intensive and I’m extremely glad I chose to do it rather than haul it in someplace. This definitely isn’t your typical 1hr brake or hub job…I’m about halfway through mine right now as we speak and ready to start assembling everything back together this week. So far everything has been pretty straight forward and easy going so I don’t foresee any issues cranking her back up!
From a mechanical background, I understand your explanation very well. I have not work with this type vehicle but very similar to other old timing chain vehicles. I very much like the way you work expressly the the cleaning of old gasket and other part. Well done this help a lot with understanding how to remove and replace new parts also cam settings. Well done 😊😊

Awesome video! Thanks for your time to shoot that video. GM recommends to remove the oil pan to properly perform that work which is important. But, I noticed you skipped that step. I know why. In order to remove the oil pan you'd need to remove the transfer case as well. It's a lot of work, waste of time. GM could easily do better because it's possible. However, I found a very easy way to remove the oil pan without going through all the unnecessary headaches that GM recommends. There's absolutely no reasons for that. Thanks again!
Hi... Can you give some details on the easy sump removal system ? we have just taken on a Holden Trax that has filings in the oil filter and I feel dropping the sump is the only way to check for further filings and maybe kerf on the oil pick up strainer. thanks. Tarakai
Thank you sir nice video am working on this same engine right now but I didn't loose the camshaft sprokets because I don't have the special tool but I'll try my best to get it right so keep up your good work sir
Thanks for this useful demo. I replaced a faulty timing chain on my Vauxhall Corsa last year and all went perfectly well until i had two fault codes - P0016 and P0017. Oddly the car runs sweet now, no unusual noises and starts strait away every time, but fuel consumption has decreased somewhat although I am aware of that with these fault codes present. I checked everything that has been recommended on numerous websites and chat rooms to remedy this but it now feels like the issue has been caused by the camshaft sensor disks not being aligned correctly when the rebuild was carried out causing the camshaft sensors to send the signal that do not correspond with the crankshaft sensor signal correctly. They're probably only a few degrees out but they are possibly causing the fault. Didn't have the alignment tool at the time so now gonna take the rocker cover off and check to see if they are correct with a new tool i'll be buying soon. Also done some research into VVT controls so will remove the oil control valve and solenoids to check for faults and a good clean out too. Shame the owners manual doesn't include this in the section covering engine strip downs / timing chain renewal. I'll let you know how this goes.
Francine, I have a video on cleaning of the camshaft valves as well. I would imagine the outer part of the camshaft alignment procedure probably needs to be done again. The good news is that is fairly easy to do.
If those phasers aren't aligned properly, they will throw code P0017 (Exhaust Camshaft position not plausible) or P0016 (Intake Camshaft position not plausible).
Thank! I bought the aftermarket timing kit but the only piece I could figure how to use was the crankshaft pin!!! When I was finished I got both codes. P0016 and P0017. It runs ok but I'm going to take off the valve cover and the cam actuators and try timing it again.😢
If both cams are out of time it may actually be the crank that’s out. The ecm is going to think the crank is correct and the cams are wrong, which is probably why you are getting those codes. I hope this helps!
Excellent video; by far the most comprehensive and helpful I've been able to find. Thank for taking the time to post. Just finished this job on my daughter's 2015 Sonic. Only one criticism.. I don't think you stated that some water pump bolts are actually holding the timing cover in place. Luckily, I realized this before prying too hard and snapping the cover. Thanks again!!
This is exactly what I needed from a video. Thanks Mr B. Just saved my daughter's car ( broke a sparkplug in the head and need to remove the head to get the faulty plug out). Just bought the tool kit. Thanks again. I will let you know if it works out for me. I also need to put new head bolts THANKS, THANKS, THANKS. New Brunswick Canada.
Great video! I need to do a repair on a leaking timing chain cover. When I have to take of the chain I might just replace it as wel. Kind regards, from the Netherlands!
That crankshaft hold absolutely has to hold all the pressure when u are removing and installing the balancer torque to yield bolt that's it's job actually.
Fantastic Job. Very well filmed and narrated. I am about to start replacing a 1.4L eco blown head gasket so as long as i've got so much apart, thought it would be a good idea to proactively replace the chain and water pump. Again really enjoyed your video

This is a great video! I helped me out tremendously. I am doing the same exact work on my Sonic I did take your advice and did not remove the A/C compressor. I guess my only critique would be to show torque specs for all applications. Thank so much! 👍

Thank you good job first time I seen you on UA-cam I see you have many followers I definitely subscribed right away keep up the good work we need people like you
19-3-24. I am dismantling the time chain from breakdown. This vehicle never suffered from a noisy chain. But after checking , timing was out, reset timing , ran perfectly. Flushed engine, Changed oil and filter. Now rattles its head off, run a few seconds and stops won’t restart. But if left a while it does same. Seems like oil pressure. But how can I check other than visual. How bad would it look. Ran perfect on old oil. Will update when stripped.
Thankyou so much for making this video and taking the time to properly explain things. I've got one that needs lifters and the timing sprockets have to come out with the cams and there's no way I'm gonna pay a shop the 2k plus that they've quoted me for it when I can do it myself now
Hey buddy thanks for the video I’m about to pull off the timing cover do not have timing tools and not planning On replacing the timing chain car had 50k and the oil pump needs a rebuild. Any chance of it not leaking if I don’t replace the gasket ?
Hi im doing the timing following your video which phenomenal. I have one question i hooe i get the answer for it my question is when i was locking the crankshaft i put the pin gone all the way in and the first piston from the timing chain side on top dead centre put the metal bar in the back of cam shafts but the crankshaft pin was cominv out itself then i pushed in was all the way in put tissue paper between Ac compresser just to keep it in WHY is that ? It wasnt under pressure ??
Hi I’ve bought a timing tool off eBay and the camshaft timing tool that goes on the front part of the engine where the sprockets are have about a cm play when you loosen the nut, the tool doesn’t hold it in exact place the wee dishes with cut outs can be moved about half a cm to each side, hope this makes sense
Watching from South Africa, I have a 2012 Chevy Sonic 1.4L , it has a loud knocking sound and it keeps stalling, can changing timing chain and camshaft sensor make a different
I know this old vid but amazing job , thank you . just one question if i may, Doing the exact same job right now waiting on parts but the crank shaft pulley on this one has about 3/4 of an inch play in it . The pulley is snug on the shaft but they both can ra=rock back and forth just beyond and just behind the timing mark . Should i stop just when piston stops moving up? Right when circle side barley lines up to mark ? There is about 3 16th until it starts dropping and can place it on either side but should tension be on the pulley going forward with rotation of motor or should i place circle just as piston going down ? Or is something else hooped inside on crank journals and that play is no goood? Person who owns it was driving and it literally snapped a rocker arm in 2 and jammed it under the cam lobe pretty hard also =other issues which with all factors i can understand why . So replacing the obvious and also new tension er and idle pulley on serp belt old and coolant change spark plugs , scope for trouble codes as there was some last time i looked at it . Cant recall but not severe. Parts will be in a week hopefully. and kit ordering today . but yeah just stuck on that flywheel play before they spend 1000 to 1500 on it , or more if there is more damage . turns over by hand but with one less rocker arm i fished out . Getting whole new head with cams n gears so replacing should be as easy as your s. Thanks in advance Great video made it a lot easier for me to tackle it. thanks .
Great video! I've done this before on a different car and what I found nice in your video is the fact that you assume the watcher understands the basics and you don't need to explain in detail how to do certain things - Example: Didn't need to show how to remove the AC or Alternator. I would argue that if you had to show it, the watcher probably shouldn't be doing this work!
Thank you for this video..all the way from South Africa 🇿🇦 Please help me out..the exhaust camshaft gear turns and then locks and not turn the camshaft and only turns the chain, then the camshaft jumps out of timing.. And how do the camshaft lobes sit, I mean which direction do they point to for them to be really on timing I do have the locking tool but it's my first time using it Thank you in advance

If those phasers aren't aligned properly, they will throw code P0017 (Exhaust Camshaft position not plausible) or P0016 (Intake Camshaft position not plausible).
Awesome video and very detailed, just one suggestion. I think it would be satisfying to see the start up after the repair.
Completely understand! Unfortunately the shop was about to be closed so I have to cut things short. Thanks for watching!
This video saved my ass big time. My service instructions on NoData say "remove timing chain then Install new timing chain" no more info....
Glad to help, and thanks for watching!
To help with coolant draining the timing does have torques srew in middle of cover to help drain out coolant if helps anyone
One of the best instructional videos I've seen. Very hepful
Thanks for watching!
Glad you finished your repair, and thanks for watching!
That’s awesome! Glad I could help and sorry you had this misfortune. It happens to the best of us. Thanks for watching!
Thanks a lot Ernie! Good luck with your repair.
Yeah man
One of if not the best presentation Iv ever watched
Very thorough and easy to follow
Thank you

What a wonderful video I don't think you can ask for anything better thank you.

Im From Ireland.
I have one those engines sitting on my engine stand actually removed 2013 opel astra head gasket blown.
Watched your video i gott a few helpful tipps thank you
Greetings from the States! Glad I could help, good luck with the repair
@@AutoScholarwithMrB thank you
Absolutely the best video for timing on the echo tech I’ve seen
Thanks so much! A lot of work went into it.
I have a question okay on those ton wheels those the little round things has be exciting like in that picture u had meaning the on right side is touching the tool , or as long as the tool fits on there u fine ?
@@deewilliams2607 the tool has to fit on there with no resistance. Sorry for the late reply, I just saw the notification.
very good helpful video, I'm from the UK and have a Vauxhall astra that has the same engine, I'm a mechanic myself but never done one of these timing chain replacements so found your video very informative.👍
Thanks for watching j!
Thanks great video. Does the pen for the crank has to insert flush to the flange? It looks like yours was flush to the block. Thanks 🙏
This is a great video! I helped me out tremendously. I am doing the same exact work on my Sonic I did take your advice and did not remove the A/C compressor. I guess my only critique would be to show torque specs for all applications. Thank so much! 👍
Very thorough video. I very much appreciate the effort put into it.
An amazing video and way in depth. Thank you for making this! And for linking the tool.
No problem Jacob, thanks for watching!
Thank You For All Your Instruction.
Thanks for watching, Joseph!
Great video, great job Mr B! I did it myself, it isn't hard. Thank You very much. Greetings from Poland. Vehicle: Opel Zafira C 1.4T ;)
So did this the other day. Absolute bastard of a job! 10 hours!
Yeah, not fun at all! Thanks for watching.
@@AutoScholarwithMrB yep. Not worth the money involved lol.
@@tiberiusclaudiusnerogermanicis yeah I think it books out at about 6.5 hours. Took me about 9 but filming always slows me down a lot.
@@AutoScholarwithMrB I didnt have a lift either.. and my air compressor wasent available for it either. Crank pulley was a real pain!
@@tiberiusclaudiusnerogermanicis oh yeah that will slow you down for sure
Nice video am in Nassau Bahamas and am doing a head job now on a 2013 Buick encore and this video is a good help because i never did this particular engine before so thanks again i may email you soon ok be bless always 🙏
Thank you for this, I'm about to do some head work on my cruze from my timing chain jumping and actually damaging valves
Oof! Sorry to hear that. Thanks for watching, and good luck with the repair.
just about to do this job on a 2016 Vauxhall Zafira in the UK, engine code B14NET. Excellent video, everything i needed to know, even torque specs to save me looking them up! Im going to pull my sump to fish out the smashed up guides on mine though! great job, thanks!
Thanks for watching my friend!
Thank you good job first time I seen you on UA-cam I see you have many followers I definitely subscribed right away keep up the good work we need people like you
Thanks for the sub and thanks for watching!
I've got one that needs lifters and the timing sprockets have to come out with the cams and there's no way I'm gonna pay a shop the 2k plus that they've quoted me for it when I can do it myself now
Thanks for watching Ethan, and good luck with the repair! :)
@@AutoScholarwithMrB thanks, I'm hoping it goes well. I'll be tackling it this upcoming weekend
Awesome job, great video. Love all the detail!
Awesome video you are a great teacher. Any diyer with mechanical background can do it solely with this video.
great video , watching from Belgium
Hi. I'm watching your video from Copenhagen Denmark (DK):)
Fantastic video
Greetings from the United States! Thanks for watching.
thank you for taking the time and all the detail for this video. Awesome.! Liked and subed!
Appreciate the effort here, thank you man..
thank u a lot for producing this guide! save me throughtout first ever chain replacement)))
Hey buddy thanks for the video I’m about to pull off the timing cover do not have timing tools and not planning On replacing the timing chain car had 50k and the oil pump needs a rebuild. Any chance of it not leaking if I don’t replace the gasket ?
very useful video expained the vvt system very well .. will use it when i change the head gasket on a vauxhall corsa vvt
Good luck with your repair Mike!
Good job. But what is the best quality (febi bilstein, BGA, SKF, FAI AutoParts, DAYCO, INA...)? Thanks
Watching from South Africa, I have a 2012 Chevy Sonic 1.4L , it has a loud knocking sound and it keeps stalling, can changing timing chain and camshaft sensor make a different
info did help alot bog boss hope to see more 👌
from S.A
Thank you best video .explain right .100% thanks I spent 2 hours .tried by my self find this video .5 minutes thanks again
Thanks for watching!
Thanks in advance Great video made it a lot easier for me to tackle it. thanks .
Hi when you took oil pump apart ,are there any seals that need to be replaced ,or is it just remove cover lubricate and replace cover ?
Great video! I've done this before on a different car and what I found nice in your video is the fact that you assume the watcher understands the basics and you don't need to explain in detail how to do certain things - Example: Didn't need to show how to remove the AC or Alternator. I would argue that if you had to show it, the watcher probably shouldn't be doing this work!
UA-cam videos are tough, because you only have so much time. I try to include everything that I feel will help. Thanks for watching!
Great video really helped me in the uk on the 1.4 Vauxhall Astra
Thanks for watching! Good luck with your repair!
You are very patient and kind man. Your video is very useful excellent and alot of merit.keep up the good work.
Great job I need to know if a 2015 Chevy Cruze has a rear main oil seal and how hard is it to replace?
It sure does. Transmission has to come out. So fairly hard.
I have a 2013 Cruze LT 1.4 with 192K
She runs great and just leaks oil.
Cant I just RTV the cover and solve the leak issue?
Great video btw. Thanks.
Thank you for this video..all the way from South Africa 🇿🇦
Please help me out..the exhaust camshaft gear turns and then locks and not turn the camshaft and only turns the chain, then the camshaft jumps out of timing..
And how do the camshaft lobes sit, I mean which direction do they point to for them to be really on timing
I do have the locking tool but it's my first time using it
Thank you in advance
Thank you for the video really helpful love step by step videos you explain it really good am working on a vaxhuall corsa and am watching from UK just outside Glasgow
