  • Oxygen sensors are one of the largest contributing sensors to your vehicle's fuel trims. A malfunctioning sensor can cause all kinds of havoc on your engine. In this live webcast we are here to talk about not only how an oxygen sensor works, but also how to test and verify its functionality. We will also be talking about the problems that can cause oxygen sensor failures as well as the problems you can run into when once one has failed.

This is the best video I have seen on O2 (Lambda) sensors. I taught F.A.S.T.(Factory Authorized Suzuki Training) at MM I(Motorcycle Mechanics Institute) 2006~2011.
Even though some of the info is simplified it makes it easier to understand. I would not have been allowed to explain anything that was not approved curriculum but a few students were always interested in how and why things work. The information was much more difficult to find back then (except in technical terms majority wouldn't understand) I'm going to link this on Facebook as several of my former students stay in touch and are still interested in learning 'more'

ike's confidence and knowledge and preparedness comes through in his presentation. In spades. This all is critical to the viewer/student: if the instructor is "um"ing and "uh"ing, it results in losing the attention of the student.

Just changed my upstream O2 sensor on my 1999 Saturn SL. Yes, it’s still running great. I cleaned throttle body, changed plugs and wires, cleaned and re-oiled my K&N air filter plus other parts. The car ran great until it warmed up. Finally my service engine light came on. Took it to Advance Auto and they said O2 sensor code came up. That was actually what i was suspecting. I didn’t have the understanding on how it worked or just how important it is for engine performance. So with a new O2 sensor it runs like a top. I won’t be convinced that everything is working until i take a longer drive and I’ll know. I was wondering why my damn fuel economy went to hell. I was always getting 38mpg on average. This is highway/city average. Highway normally 40+ mpg! I love my old Saturn and will drive it until it dies. Thanks for your informative video!

This is so great, to learn here what I would have to pay thousands from a tech school. I know that I need to continue watching more of your tutorials. I am expecting some parts for my 2009 Nissan Rogue S, it has the check engine "nightmare" light very steady I thought I had everything packed down to work on my car, but I will continue your tutorials, so that I can get straight to the problem and not go guessing. Thanks. And the first Q's answer is B.

Thanks for the very kind words Miguel! I am glad you are going to watch more! I must say though, tech school is a great start. No matter how good these classes I make are, they don't beat hands on learning like a tech school can provide.
As for you Nissan, what code are you getting? I'd be happy to help! Test don't guess right?
Thanks for commenting! Actually technician B is not correct. The rear O2 sensor commonly will not switch, it should remain much more steady. The correct answer was Neither tech.

Robert, that is an interesting viewpoint. I agree, if you understand the basics it makes the more complex newer stuff easier. You have to build that foundation. Feedback carbs are an ancient system, and to be completely honest with you, I know very little about them. When I was in Tech school years ago they didn't really even teach carbs at all. Everything driveability started with early fuel injection for me. I guess everyone starts learning at different points, but as long as the basic system knowledge is there we can all learn the new stuff together!

Awesome video, thanks so much. When I saw how long it was going to be, I thought I'd skip through it, but ended up watching it from start to finish, sometimes going back a bit to check again! One question: Does the heater stay on or does the ECU know when it's hot enough from exhaust gases and turn off the heater current?

Hey Vincent, thanks for watching! That all depends on the strategy of the computer. Many will keep it on, just at a lower current draw.
