    Great video Joe! Most comprehensive guide on cactus repoting I've seen on UA-cam, simple but truly great idea to repot this time of year when everyone seems to have more time for plants. I know you mentioned while repoting check for insects, I wonder how do you deal with it if you find meally bugs - it just so happens that I found some on my cactus roots.
    Looking forward to see what is your routine dealing with common cactus pests, perhaps a video someday ;)
    Oh and Happy 1 Year birthday!

      Hey Marius! Thank you so much for watching and for your awesome feedback, really appreciated! Also, thank you so much for your channel birthday wishes, ačiū, ačiū! I will take your suggestion onboard for a video on this topic in the future, thanks! Ah yes, those mealy bugs are super annoying, so hard to get rid of unfortunately! I treat repeatedly with Isopropanol (easy to get on the internet, rubbing alcohol), spray and rub using a q-tip - repeatedly as the parent pests have usually alread produced eggs and a next generation, so even if they are killed, there is more to expect if treatment is not done repeatedly over a 1-2 week period. Especially the root mealy bugs are most difficult to get rid of. I would isolate from the rest of the collection, take out of substrate, wash roots, dry and apply the above several times. Only once ok, then repot, and monitor if any coming back. Hope it goes well, best of luck and have a great day!

      Maybe consider using a dusting of sulfur powder on the soil as well.

    ❤ hey Joe, this is Pauline. It would be very helpful that when you talk about a plant actually talk about where it comes from and how to take care of it because there is many people like me that are dumb and just doesn’t know how to do it you have much knowledge to share and I appreciate all of it. Thank you so much.

      Hi Pauline, aww thank you that's very kind of you, thanks for watching and for your valuable feedback. Indeed I often try to cover a bit of info for most plants that I show, in this video however I was focussed very much on the potting of cacti theme, so did not say too much about the individual plants shown. But your point is noted and let me see if I can cover a bit more infos on individual plants again in another future video.

    Awesome video, Joe. Happy one year anniversary, too 🥳 I’ve repotted a few cacti in the winter in the past, didn’t do them any harm. In a way it does make sense to repot them while they’re not actively growing. I’ll have some Euphorbia repotting videos coming up soon, although those are pretty much awake and active already. Thank you for sharing with us as always my friend. Have a lovely evening and upcoming weekend from Edith & myself and happy growing 👍🏻🌵☀️🌼🌺🏜

    YAY Happy 1st year Anniversary on You Tube Joe :-D and we absolutely LOVE your AWESOME Cactus channel, you are like an Encyclopaedia of knowledge of growing Cacti and Succulents, and this is the PERFECT topic to do for this time of year, and really incredible info and tips you have shared in this fantastic video, I have been thinking about starting to repot some of mine now instead of waiting until Spring, as I have a little bit more time on my hands to repot now in late Winter than I will have in the Spring and Summer, and I have just uploaded a repotting video of my little Parodia lenighausii pup, thats perfect timing haha, I think its a really good time of year in late Winter to repot plants, as they are coming to the end of their dormancy and it means they have a head start for the upcoming spring, thanks so much for sharing this awesome video Joe, and Hans and I are sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER to Bavaria for a wonderful upcoming weekend XXXX

Haha, so kind of you to say this, but I am far from "encyclopaedic level" of knowledgeable, hahaha, in fact I keep seeing and learning new things all the time too, especially also from folks like yourself, and your own ABSOLUTELY brilliant channel - which is why I love this wonderful cactus & succulent friends community on UA-cam so much!!! It is indeed such a funny and excellent coincidence to have these repotting videos come out at almost the same time, haha! You are absolutely right, also from a time availability point of view, it is another good reason to use the mid/late winter period for cactus and succculent plant repotting! Thanks again for watching and all of your support, very best wishes and cactus greetings going out from my little greenhouse in Bavaria to you and Hans on the wonderful Emerald Isle!! Have a great weekend, lot's of Plant Power, and happy growing (...or repotting) of course!!

Good to hear that you regularly report during the winter too, and indeed the generally lower activity level is just another good reason added to the long list, haha! Yes indeed, lol, I use only top dressing, throughout! As you say, the reason being that my substrate has to be extra fast and effectively water-draining in my quite often humid climate, wish I had the high temps and dry air that you have, haha! Once again many thanks and wishing you an excellent rest of the week, take care and happy growing (...or, re-potting of course, haha!).

    1st year!! Awesome!!! I usually start doing a bit of repotting around the end of February. By this time I'm seeing buds and flowers forming & new growth from some. The way I usually test the soil for moisture is to take a long bamboo skewer, very thin, and slide it in the soil. If soil comes out on it , it will usually have moisture. If the skewer comes out powder dry, it needs water. You have some very good points in this video. Going to start on my sansaveria collection this weekend. Many are looking like they are going to bust their pots!! I've had this happen with them before. They are very strong!! Thanks for sharing your wonderful video Joe!! From Morris Park in the Ozarks, out to Bavaria, Germany 🇩🇪, have a wonderful day!!! Peace, Love, Plants!!!✌️💖🌵🥀🌳🏵🌿🌸🌷🌱🌲🌹🌴🌾🌻🪴💐🍀😃👍

Great also to read that you do some repotting late February too! Indeed, it is a good time also to check on the new buds slowly appearing! Wishing you a wonderful saturday and weekend, and sending awesome cactus greetings from my little greenhouse in Bavaria to you at Morris Park in the Ozarks, best wishes and take care my friend!!

    Happy Anniversary Joe!!!! Hard to believe it has been a year already for you and your amazing channel! This is a FANTASTIC video! The timing could not be better, not just in the month that we're talking about, but the fact I was going to ask you this week if you could do a video about if we should re-pot in winter! For many years I have pondered that question, but remained undecided, until now. I have already made a list of all the cacti that I should repot this week and next. This was very informative, and I learned quite a few things from you....
    The dummy pot idea is absolutely genius! I think that really helps give us an idea of when to water, as it is something that still makes me a little bit nervous even though I haven't killed any of my cacti by overwatering. Not yet anyway, ha ha! And also, I had no idea about removing roots when repotting! It makes sense though, and you demonstrated it so I could see how easy it is to gently tease them away. The lovely Lyn of desertplantsofavalon, does this with her Haworthia plants, and I started doing it also-with great success! My quandary about the cacti, was I didn't want to repot in spring when a lot of them are starting to flower, I didn't like repotting in summer when others were starting to flower, and didn't like the idea of interrupting their growth cycle in that time period either. Fall is a time for them to wind down for their winter rest in my cold room, and that didn't seem like a great time to repot either. So winter is really the perfect time, and I am so happy you made this video!
    I am going to start doing mine at this time of the year, and I can imagine I will see the results, as I don't find the cacti that I repot in the spring and summer really take off like I think they should. And those are the ones that won't flower until the next year when they're not repotted-so I am interfering with that process.
    This video is a game changer, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge Joe, I can't wait to see your next video! And by the way, I am very interested in how to take care of any insect problems during winter, in the other seasons if I see anything I use Castile soap, water, and rubbing alcohol mixture. Sometimes I will use neem instead. If there's a large insect outbreak during winter, how do you best take care of that without soaking the cacti soil when it is supposed to be dry? That would be a great video I think! And I apologize for this super ridiculously long post! But I am so grateful to you for this vital information, it is going to make my life so much easier, not to mention my beloved cacti collection! They thank you too! 🙏🌵💚🌸🌸😊

      @cactusjoe  Рік тому +1

      Hi Michelle, indeed I agree with you, these blue torch cacti are wonderful, in fact they are among my all time favorites! Yeah, it's definitley worth experimenting a bit to see whether terracota or plastic pots are more suitable in your specific growing conditions, and also for which plants best to use which pot. That is why in my video I do not make a choice for a single pot type, since all types have their pro's and con's and so knowing these is most important, so you can then choose the best type in your circumstances. Have a wonderful day, best wishes and happy growing!

    I find your reasoning to repot cacti mid winter to be very sound! I usually repot newly purchased cacti and succulents in the cold months to get them out of their plastic pots which keep the soil too moist. I feel confident in potting up older plants as well now that I’ve watched your video.

    • @cactusjoe
      @cactusjoe  Рік тому +2

      Hi Jane, wonderful to read your comments and feedback, very happy that you found the information useful and compelling! I completely agree with you, it is quite important to get plants out of their plastic pots if the soil mixture stays too moist for too long, which is very often the case indeed with plants coming from supermarkets, nurseries and plant centers - these soils are mainly made for fast growing/selling purposes, but not really suitable for growing cacti a bit "harder" and longer term succesful of course. Thanks again for watching and wishing you a wonderful Friday evening and weekend ahead, take care and happy growing (...or potting!) of course!

    Your approach to repotting mid- winter makes lots of sense, this is why I love your channel, it is invaluable information you don't get anywhere else! I like to add a bit of pelletized tomato fertilizer to my soil mix and a bit of manure to give my cacti a little boost, I might be wrong for doing so, but I like to experiment and see what works and what doesn't. I was super excited about this video coming out since yesterday and as soon as it was out it was like holding Jesus hand for me😁...excellent video as always my friend, and, Happy growing! Know what would be a great idea, a 12" rotating table that has a vibrating module at its base. Maybe one with a dimmer switch to adjust the vibration frequency. This way, as you're repotting, the substrate settles quite nicely around the roots. And with the added feature of a slow rotation, you can remain stationary and simply pour in the mix.

      Ja also, richtig gute Frage! Bei Kakteen die bereits Knospen angesetzt haben, da warte ich bis nach dem Verblühen. Meist werden nämlich die Knospen leider abgeworfen wenn man zur gleichen Zeit umtopft. Bei diesen sehr früh blühenden Gattungen wie Aylostera, Rebutia, usw. da sollte man dann lieber bereits im Dez/Jan umgetopft haben, falls man ebenfalls die Ruhezeit zum Umtopfen ausnutzen will. Hoffe die Antwort hilft Dir weiter. Liebe Kakteengrüße, Joe 🙌🙏👍😊👍🌵🪴🌵🌿🌺🌼💚😎☀️

I also like to buy new plants at the end of January beginning February for the same reason, especially if the plants have to travel few days. I think they are less disturb because they still in dormancy. Your substrate looks so great. I try to use the same inorganic composant but it’s not easy to find it and for a good price hahaha. Fantastic to read that you too succesfully repot your plants this time of the year too. Regarding the inorganic components, I have found that the company VulkaTec sells a very good mix (called cactus substrate premium) on their online shop, and although it is still not super cheap, it is a very good product, and buying from them directly is still a much better deal than the same product (re-)sold by several cactus nurseries in Europe. They deliver across the EU I think, in case you are interested. Thanks again for all your awesome comments, have a wonderful Saturday evening and a relaxing Sunday!

After repotting, I tell myself I won't be watering that plant for about two weeks. Trouble is, I have repotted plants and potted up new plants on many different days and can't keep track of all of these two week periods! How do you keep track of when individual plants may need water when it isn't winter time? I try to get them all on the same schedule, but there are always times when something might need some water. Thanks for all the tips!

What I have done in recent years is to place those pots/plants in a separate space, so physically separated in a bit of a "dry zone" in my collection. And then after 1-2 weeks, depending on weather, i move them back into their original, proper locations. In that way it becomes a bit easier for me to remember who is ready for watering again! Hope that helps. Enjoy your weekend and happy growing of course!👍🌞🌵🪴🌵🏵🌺🌻💚😎

    I noticed that the new substrate you're using for repotting is somewhat wet/moist. Don't you think it would be advisable to let the "wounds" on the root system dry out and heal for at least 1-2 days before repotting, especially since your substrate contains organic matter? I agree on everything you said and been repotting my cacti in february for as long as I can remember. I always let the roots dry out for several days before burying them again, though.
    Congratulations on your anniversary and keep up the good work.
    Best regards,

      @cactusjoe  Рік тому

      Hey, Nino! Many thanks for watching and for your excellent feedback, really awesome to hear that you too have been succesfully repotting/potting in February for a long time! Regarding the substrate, in my experience that is more of an issue when using plastic pots, BUT, you had me worried for a moment, haha, I went out to the greenhouse to check on the substrate!! But it is actually very dry in fact, lol!
      But you make an excellent point. I indeed, but only very rarely (...only for super, super rot-sensitive plants, and where I am removing "fresh" roots), also wait a few days before I put them back into substrate. What I always do, however, is to place all newly potted plants on to a top/high shelf in the greenhouse for a week or so (in the winter), where it is warmer and drier. And also, the terracotta pots do the rest, regarding "pulling out" any remaining dampness from the substrate.
      It sounds like you are a long-time, very experienced grower of cacti too, which is brilliant, where are you based? Thanks again also for all your awesome comments about the channel, wishing you a very enjoyable weekend ahead! And happy growing of course!!

      @@cactusjoe I live in Croatia (Zagreb), and have been growing cacti for about 35 years now. Actually It's a bit longer than that, but 35 years ago I started to get "serious" about it. About that time I got an address of Gerhard Koehres from an older cacti grower, wrote to him and requested for catalogue, and made my first order of seeds. I was quite ambitious and ordered seeds of all the "easy" species (Aztekium ritteri, Pellecyphora aselliformis. Encephalocarpus strobiliformis, Ariocarpus fissuratus, number of Epithelantha and Turbinicarpus species, etc. 😄). As you can imagine, the results were not spectacular, but, miraculously, I still have two surviving Aztekiums on their own roots from that time. Some years after that I found out about Karel Rys and several other big growers ... the rest is history. I think we might be of similar age (I'm 53). I had a long pause in sowing cacti from seed (more than 15 years), but several years ago I decided to start again. It's much easier this days with all the information easily accessible, specialized substrates, fertilizers, LED lighting, etc.

      Hey Pauline! Thank you and wishing you a Happy New Year too! Best wishes for 2024 to you and your loved ones! As long as that base of your blue crest cactus is not looking soft or watery and dark (that would likely be rot if it were) it is probably nothing to worry about. A lot of cacti get these brownish-colored parts at their base, that is called corking and can look a bit like the bark of tree and sometimes also can peel a bit. As long as the plant is healthy and grows in the main growth season then you need not worry about this appearance at the base of cactus stems.

      Hi Ted, thanks for watching and for your question. Any cuttings or e.g. pups that you take from cacti and other succulents should first be kept in the shade for a week or so, without potting soil. This is to ensure that any cuts or damaged roots can properly heal off - and thereby reduce risk of rotting. Only then place them into potting soil, and very lightly start watering. Hope this answers your question. Happy growing!👍😊🌵🪴🌵🌼🌸💚😊😎☀️

    • @cactusjoe
      @cactusjoe  10 місяців тому +1

      Hi Kaz, thanks for watching and for your question. Indeed, I never use screens, instead I cover the drainage holes at the bottom of my pots with shards of old terracota pots, Leca beads or small flat stones. The disadvantage, in my view, of screens is that they still leak finer-grained substrate, and they remain wet for a long time, which triggers growth of fungi and bacteria. Also, when repotting, I can quite easily push the substrate with plant out of the pot with a thin, firm stick when I use a shard. This does not work with a soft screen... Best regards and happy growing!👍🙏🙌😊🌵🪴🌼🌺

    Oh no plz dont tell me i need to repot my cacti, i give them a new pot when i get them but i was thinking cacti only needs repoting or up potting when old pot gets to small or if something is wrong, my 250 bonsai needs repotting (soil change) every year or two so i dont think i will have time to repot "change soil" in my cacti to.
    Maybe i get bonsai words confused with normal plant words, i think of repot as soil change and root trimming if needed

    • @cactusjoe
      @cactusjoe  Рік тому +3

      Hi Anders, no need to worry, you certainly do not have to repot all your cacti just for the sake of repotting. Only if there is a good reason or requirement, e.g. existing pot is too small, or soll mix not appropriate (most cacti from supermarkets), or if you want to move from plastic pot to terracota (or the other way round) like my example in the video. Also, cactus substrate does not last forever, so repotting into fresh soil/substrate every few years can really be very beneficial for the plant! Have a fun Friday afternoon and evening and enjoy your weekend my friend, happy growing!!😊👍🌵🌱🌵🌺🌼🌺🏵💚😎
