How I REPOT My 25+ Year Old Ariocarpus LIVING ROCK CACTUS Group

  • The transition period between winter dormancy and spring-time re-awakening is always an exciting time for us, and for our plants - and certainly for me, it's a very busy one too! This is usually when I repot those cacti that have outgrown their pots, or are in need of fresh growing substrate.
    Repotting many of the smaller plants is a simple routine procedure. Dozens per hour! However, whenever the golden oldies, rare or very special plants are due for re-potting, the routine stops and special care, lot's of TLC, a lot more time and sometimes unique solutions may be required!
    One such case, last week, was when I decided that my 25+ year old group of Living Rock Cacti (Ariocarpus fissuratus) was finally up for re-potting!! They had already seriously expanded and cracked open the styrofoam box that they had been growing in for over a decade...so, how did I go about this task? ...what new growing vessels did I choose? ...and what about the new substrate? ...most importantly, did it work, or did things go terribly wrong?
    If you are interested in finding out, then please check in to this new video...and see you hopefully all in my greenhouse, ready to help out, with some serious repotting business!
    2:29 Why my Ariocarpus fissuratus group requires repotting?
    4:29 Removing the cacti from their current growing tray
    9:39 Preparing the new growing trays & substrate
    15:03 Potting up the cacti in their new terracota growing trays
    18:16 My new Ariocarpus fissuratus group
    Enjoy & Happy Growing of course!
    Cheers,
    Joe

    YAY repotting time haha, AWESOME video on repotting your INCREDIBLE Ariocarpus fissuratus 25 year old stunners, and thats amazing you have grown them all from seed, the nice chunky tap roots and roots look so nice and healthy on them too, the substrate you have used looks really wonderful, and they look so AWESOME all re potted into the two new ceramic planters, its so good to repot now and get them all prepared for the exciting growing season that is almost here, thanks so much for sharing this amazing Ariocarpus repotting with us Joe, and Hans and I are sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER from across the Emerald Isle to Bavaria for a fantastic upcoming weekend XXXX

      Hey Lyn!! Thank you so much, really happy that you enjoyed the repotting of my Ariocarpus oldies! Yes indeed, they are such fantastic cacti to grow and looking back after all these years, I am glad i did not realise just how slow they grow, when i started growing them from seeds I got from a friend, hahaha! Especially because i have been growing them real hard, to maintain their original flat forms! These cacti have real personalities, haha, and with their 25 years age they are almost like family members! Thanks as always to you and Hans for your support and friendship, sending lot's of cactus greetings over to you both on the beautiful Emerald Isle! Happy Sunday and happy growing!! 🙏👍😊🌵🪴🌵🌺🌼🌸💚😎☀️

    What a great idea, using styrofoam as a potting medium!

    • @cactusjoe
      @cactusjoe  3 місяці тому +1

      Thanks, so glad I could inspire you with this idea, much appreciated! Indeed these styrofoam trays or planters are also pretty good for insulating sensitive roots from cold temperatures. The main thing to watch out for though is that there are enough drainage holes, so that there is no water-logged substrate resulting in root rot! Thanks for watching and commenting. Best of luck and happy growing of course!

    It's the first time I've seen an Ariocarpus, and what a beautiful and unusual looking cactus! I really enjoyed watching your repotting process, especially seeing how the roots looked, and the substrates you use. I realise that most of my cacti pots have far too much organic matter, and as I steadily repot my collection I will be adding much more grit/mineral material for drainage. Most of my 60 cacti live indoors (bathroom & kitchen widow-sills), except self-generating (semi-abandoned) clumps of Opuntia microdasys which live in a mini cold greenhouse ~ as their glochids are quite a skin irritant, and get everywhere! I'm still hesitant about starting watering here in London as temperatures have dropped again. I will probably wait until April. Lovely video Joe ~ thank you :)

It sounds like you have quite a collection of cacti yourself, which is fantastic! And you are using various spaces wisely! You are far more brave than me, I have banned Opuntia microdasys from my collection, haha! Probably very wise to still wait a little while, as the weather is indeed still a bit unpredictable! Greetings to London! I worked and lived there for a few years and absolutely fell in love with this awesome city!! Also, I was a regular at Kew Gardens of course, hahaha! 👍😊🙏🌵🪴🌵🌺🌼🌸💚😎☀️

      Thanks Gary, fantastic to hear that you enjoyed the repotting video and also the Ariocarpus cacti! This year's harvest has actually already been traded with another, local collector friend of mine here, sorry! But also, because of the very strict international CITES regulations to avoid illegal trading of seeds from these rare and endangered plants, in any case I would always encourage only getting seeds from an authorised cactus seed distributor or seller in your own country, just to make sure you or anybody else does not get into trouble! Btw, many national cactus and succulent plant societies also are fantastic and very affordable sources for seeds from a huge selection of plants. Very best wishes, hope you are having a great weekend and happy growing of course!! 🙏👍😊🌵🌺🌵💚😎☀️

You did an excellent job growing them in a somewhat “hard way” for them to look as natural as they can be. I am growing Ariocarpus seedling right now. Hey! I love watching your videos!
    I just purchased a baby ariocarpus (1 inch) and I was wondering when to water for the first time. I repoted it 10 days ago in 100% mineral mix and I live in São Paulo, Brazil. Our winters are really dry and not that cold, but not hot either.

    • @cactusjoe
      @cactusjoe  6 днів тому

      Hey Thiago! Thanks for watching and for your awesome feedback, so fantastic to hear that you are enjoying the videos, obrigado! Congratulations on your new Ariocarpus, and it's great to read that you have put it into a mineral cactus substrate, as they are indeed a bit sensitive to overwatering as you know. Since you are currently in the middle of your winter, but I assume temperatures are over 10-15 C, i would still keep quite dry but out of full sun. Perhaps a few drops of water every week or two? And when your Spring weather with more sun and higher temperatures starts, then i would also start watering as you do your other cacti.
      Btw, do you know the really cool cactus channel @ModernGrower ? Also from Brazil, and can therfore likely help you much more than I can I'm afraid...I'm sure he would be happy to help you with some useful infos and answers to your excellent question! Great guy and great channel!👍🙌☺️🌵🌵🌵🙋‍♂️

    Hello Mr Joe!!! Another enjoyable video!!! I just got my 1st semi-mature Ario refuses. I have another but it's just a wee seedling. So your video came just in time!! Thank you so much for posting!! I have a few questions please, Sir, if u don't mind. I was glad you said something at the end about the 2 specimens u had that Wernt looking too well. When I 1st saw them in the big styrofoam pot, I actually thought they looked DEAD?!!! I have been collecting cactuses for a little over 2yrs now & have about 200 or so of them. But sometimes one may go Forever without growing a spec! I understand they r slow growers but geeze!! They may show No signs of ANY growth!!! So my Really stupid question to u is HOW do u really know if a cactus is dead or alive??? I know, very stupid question. But I'm very serious! I totally understand when they turn to mush or r very hard & brown that's usually a good indicator that they have gone onto Cacti Heaven! But can u tell me any other signs u r aware of?? What will their roots be like? Would there be something wrong when a cactus IS alive but is simply not growing?? Do u know what they would be lacking?? My other question is, I noticed you did not do anything to the Arios roots when u swapped them out. No trimming, no plucking,,,, yet I have seen on other of ur videos u DO pull gently on the roots of other cactuses and the dead, dey ones will fall off then. Is it because this Refuses u wanted to be EXTRA careful with??? I've seen SOME people & videos where they WHACK the heck outta some cactuses roots!! Down to practically nothing!!!! The Chinese usually do it after a purchase B4 they send it out, all the roots will be chopped! I wish they wouldn't do that! No roots, no drinks of water!!! Seems like since cactuses are such slow growing plants, their roots would obviously be as well!!! And last question, I don't believe I've seen u use the Leca balls in the bottom of ur transplants B4. Is this something new u just started. Can u emphasize again why u use those?? U don't think they don't hold TOO much water?? Do u use the Leca for ALL ur desert and/or tropical cactuses when u redo them & transplant them?? I have learned SO MUCH from u over the past cpl of yrs!! I am starving for knowledge when it comes to cactuses & carrying for my babies so forgive me for all the questions but I have 1 more please and this truly is what I need to know the most!!! See, your cactuses are are much harder then most of mine. I buy & take care of usually cactuses that most the average person wouldn't think is even cactuses!! Certain Mammillarias (plumosa, hernandezii, leuethyi,,, etc) a bunch of fuzzy sulcorerebitias, mediolobivas, lots of furry & fuzzy cactuses,,, etc. To me, that's what I think it the prettiest! I don't have many of just the tall, hardy, touch columnar cactuses or big fat globe cactuses. And I noticed when u water, u do all URS top water?? I do too. But I try to never get the body of the cactuses wet so it takes me like a full day just to water my cactuses cuz I have to be so careful. I would love to just spray them all overhead like u do and be done with it. You never seem to have like fungal issues doing it that way?? It doesn't make water marks or like if u have any fuzzy or furry cactuses, it doesn't kind of ruin their appearance?? What r ur thoughts on all this?? I'm sorry for the rambling but I've really wanted to ask u like the last question for a long time. Pls, no rush getting back to me, just whenever u can find time to respond to all my long, stupid & noobie questions hahaha,,, I sure appreciate u!! Keep the videos coming!!! Love when u go to other parks & gardens or shows to show off others cactuses as well!! More please!!! Spring is in the air!!! Yey!!!!! My 1st cacti flowered last week!! A rebutia marsonari. He's been the 1at one to bloom both 2 years in a row since I've been at this!!! Thank again Mr Joe!!! Take good care!!!! 😊

      Hi Anita, thanks for watching and I'm glad you liked the video once again!
      Hahaha, WOWsers, not sure where to start, I think you have sent me the longest comment I have EVER received, haha! Let me just go in the order of your questions:
      a) you will usually know when a cactus has died, because it LOOKS dead: all very dark-colored, no more roots and either totally dehydrated and dried up or totally soft and rotting.
      b) I would only CAREFULLY remove the roots that come off easily anyway, no radical cut-backs, unless the plant is infected with root mealy bugs.
      c) I only use a very thin layer of LECA balls as a drainage layer in very deep pots or planters, and they do hold a little bit of moisture only, and as long as they are not standing in a deep bowl or drip tray full of water (both of which I would avoid using).
      d) I avoid wet cactus stems too, which I get by permanently having a few smaller electric fans move the air, avoiding stagnant humid air in my greenhouse, as the latter is what fungi and many pests like. In summer, having all windows open for a good drying breeze also is essential.
      Hope this helps address the main points of your questions, good luck and happy growing! And congratulations on what sounds like a wonderful cactus collection that you have, and also having your Rebutia marsomeri in bloom is fantastic! Have a great weekend!

    Amazing plants and well cultivated, I love the natural look of the plants rather flat and compact. Any tips on cultivation? How is your watering procedure?

    • @cactusjoe
      @cactusjoe  3 місяці тому +1

      Thanks very much, really appreciated! Yep, I much prefer this natural, flat and compact shape too...you can only get this with lot's of patience and growing them very hard, so warm and half-sunny location in greenhouse, rel. sparse watering, no water during hot July/Aug months, restart ahead of flowering in Sept/Oct and absolutely dry for entire winter, definitely only once a year a weak fertilizer! And, as said, lot's of patience, lol!! 👍🙏😊🌵🌺🌵💚😎☀️

      @@cactusjoe this is exactly my approach to cultivation with similar soil mixture (despite the clayish limestone but I am planning to include it) and I have excellent results with Turbinicarpus and Strombocsctus almost without any loss and obtaining the natural bluish colour in spring and reddish in winter. I proceed to water only when I see the plants really stressed and wrinkled, the grow pretty slow but hardy and healthy. When you try to speed up the process you end up with unnatural growth, for some this is really appealing but for me, I want to explore the natural features. Leaving in Spain this is my particular way to be closer to the habitat and natural growth of each species.

    Cactus Joe, I live in St James Mo. When should I start watering my desert cactuses. Louie Henry.

    • @cactusjoe
      @cactusjoe  3 місяці тому

      Hi Louie Henry, it depends entirely on the location of your cacti and temperatures there. I am assuming you have them indoors and in a relatively cooler location? I would wait with first watering until a slightly warmer weather stretch is prognosed to start up, with temps holding steady at around 18-25 C during the days! I usually spray them with a fine mist of luke-warm rain water once or twice before i start watering them some smaller amounts! Hope this helps, take care and best wishes!! 🙏😊👍🪴🌿🌵🌺🌼💚😎☀️

    Hi Joe! Just found your channel! Do you use this planting method & substrate for all your cacti/succulents or just ariocarpus? TY....

      Hi there! A warm welcome to my channel and I hope you find the content useful and interesting! Yes indeed, the substrate I use is indeed quite similar for most of my cacti. If you are interested, I have several videos (in the Cactus 101 Care playlist) dedicated to the topics of potting, repotting, substrate, timing, etc. on my channel. Thanks for subscribing, have a great day and happy growing!! 👍🙏🙏☺️🌵🪴🌿🌵🌺🌼💚😎☀️🏜

    Good evening i Hope you dont mind me asking? I bought a cactus from a garden centre. I am totally a novice. It is quite healthy looking. I cant identify it correctly though. The label says "cereus mix"? I have looked online but I cant discriminate between some of the cacti which might or might not be the best match. So my question is, does a column cactus like this have deep roots or not? I want to repot it but not sure if i can use a shallow wider pot. Hope you can help. I have just discovered your channel and subscribed. Im looking forward to watching your very informative vids. Thankyou. Jay in the uk 🇬🇧

      Hi Jay, thank you for subscribing and a warm welcome to my channel! First of all, my apologies for the very long delay in responding, due to me currently being away travelling. I hope the infos don't come too late for you: in principle you can definitely repot your Cereus cactus into a shallow pot as long as it is still relatively small. Once it grows to say 20cm and higher, a normal sized plant pot will be more suitable, to give the roots more space. Most columnar cacti only start developing their "deep" roots (in search of ground water in their natural habitats) once they become somewhat larger and older. But, most importantly and independant of the pot size, just make sure that your cacti are potted in gritty, sandy cactus soil/substrate to avoid water-logging and risk of root rot. Best wishes, greetings to you in the UK and welcome once again to the community! Happy growing!🙏👍😊🌵🪴🌿🌸🌺🌼💚😎☀️

    Is it essential to clean all the dirt from the roots, untangle them, or trim them slightly before replanting?

    • @cactusjoe
      @cactusjoe  3 місяці тому +2

      No, it's not essential but it is good practice to do so, especially when repotting during the dormancy period when the cactus roots are not active. Thanks for watching and for asking, great question! Best wishes and happy growing!! 😊👍🙏🌵🌺🌼🌵💚😎☀️
