HOW TO: Turn Off MDS On Hemi Ram Trucks
Вставка

- WARNING!: use this at your own risk! , this successfully overrides MDS but could result in some weird behavior of the transmission over long use, as i was not aware of during filming, but later on screwed my truck up. Thank you

OR..just drive over 65 mph all the time, I found that, that light don’t come on anymore. And comparing it to the 1500 ram I had with the 5.7L , it’s a different tune on the 6.4, it’s only on when going downhill, coasting,or you just had to let off the gas. Once it gets down to around 10 or 15 mph it goes off. The 1500 5.7, hell it seems like it was on a lot , you could even gently go on the gas and gain speed with the ECO light on (sounds like shit tho) where as the 6.4 it won’t do that...so HAMMER DOWN!😜🤣🤣🍻👊🏻good video!
BR Outdoorz Good info !! I figured the tunes and characteristics were different from both hemi engines . The 1500s get rated mpg by the EPA, while the HD trucks don't , that's why the 1500 tries like crazy to conserve fuel I bet. I'll pin your comment 👍😎🍻
IWrocker lol thanks...that 1500 SLT had the 20” wheel option, with 3.21:1 rear axle ratio, so, if your not heavier on the throttle, it sounded like a gut less 4 banger in need of repair, drive me nuts!! 🤣🤣
BR Outdoorz ouch that is a bad wheel and axle ratio ! Gotta say I'm still impressed with the 6.4L and 4.10s ... makes for a nice peppy truck 💪
IWrocker Fuck yeah it does!!!! 🤣Even tho the power wagon costs a little more to operate, I don’t miss that 1500 at all! 👍🏻😎(😢out of beer sorry😢)
Is the shifter method permanent? We don't buy em for the mileage..
Thanks for explaining that. I've been using the down 'shifter' for going downhills, and haven't used the tow haul at all. Now I know that tow haul might be the best way to go in the sierra hills and offcourse when towing.
Thanks bro! Just bought a 17 2500 6.4 . First drive was shifting excessively. You just cleared it all up. Thank you very much!
Today bud Your video was by far the most useful for my truck to date
Tow/Haul doesn't work for everyone but the +- shifter seems to work for all RAMs that have this feature. Thanks for the video! It helped me get rid of that damn MDS.
is it necessary EVERY time you start truck?
@@robinkuruda5249 Yes. It doesn't remember. You even have to do it again if you switch to Park, Reverse or Neutral. But it works.
Went out just now in my 17 Power Wagon...confirm...ECO does not come on ever on tow/haul mode. Much better driving around in that mode. Especially with my muffler delete setup..like you...sounds awesome all the time then. And I like the shifting in TOW/HAUL mode. Have a great weekend buddy!
HotRodHarrys Yea it really livens up the truck right!? Have a great weekend bud!
tow/haul mode increases your rpms at speed compared to having it disabled. it also makes your truck gear brake down hills instead of just coasting when you're not in T/H mode. T/H kills my mpgs even worse than the HEMI already does without it.
TOW/HAUL does it over work the engine? If you were to use it as a daily driving
Just put it in the highest gear instead of drive and then you shouldn't have to worry about it kicking into MDS and it will not increase your RPMs or gear break in my 2011 I just keep it in 5th unless I'm playing and shifting through the gears manually in the 6 speed and 8 speed trucks you would just put them in 6 or 8 I'm going to bypass the MDS system when I install my cam
Appreciate the video . I have a big horn 1500 2015 & have wonder about the plus & minus buttons. Thanks for the video
Best 6min video to get to know workaround my truck, nice.
The column shifter is on the 6 speed Ram 1500s, the dial shifter is on the 8 speed Ram 1500s. Not sure if that is still true in the HD models
Been looking to get a tune on my dads truck and when I get one soon just for this shitty mds, you’re a lifesaver my guy
Once I set my gears (+-) to 8 which is highest gear. MDS is turned off and I can drive around without a problem while all 8 cylinders are being used? Do I need to downshift a gear, for example come back to 3rd or 4th gear when coming to a stop or not necessary?
THANKS MAN. THATWAS VERY HELPFUL. THINK THATS WHY THE LIFTERS ARE FAILING ON THESE HEMIS AT SUCH A LOW RPM THEY ARE’NT GETTING ENOUGH OIL. THESE ENGINES LIKE TO REV. HIGHER RPM KEEPS EVERYTHING HAPPY.
Interesting. On my 2015 6 speed when I navigate to fuel saver mode. I have two choices. ON or OFF. When I push Off and done the eco mode stays off. Even when turning the truck off and then starting. I manually need to go back to fuel saver mode and push the On and then done.
I love the sound and setup. Btw the dash, aircon, radio setup to look like a ram front-awesome. If you didn't realise go back to where rocker is playing with radio or something, the whole mid dash looks like a ram grill etc
That should have been a 10 second video. Put it in manual mode and MDS will not come on..done.
Fact !!!! That's what I do with my 2013
Um..no I'm a complete nubee. Every moment of this video was worth it. I've had this truck 2 years and still only just found out how to turn on and off the fog lights. Yes some of us are hope.ess specimens.
Literally first thing he mentioned
Or you get your ECU reprogrammed and you will never have to use manual mode ever again.
@@wendygerrish4964 exactly.
i have a 2012 only draw back to using the "tow/haul" mode with the 6 speed it wont use 6th gear while using that mode, but the manuel shift mode works fine, just set it on 6th gear and drive!!!
I have a 2011 sport 5.7/ 5spd with MDS and I have never noticed a change in sound or anything that corresponds with that system engaging / disengaging. I do however notice a difference in RPM at highway speeds if I opt to manually shift down to 5 with the stick. The ECO light goes out and my RPMs hop up a few hundred reminiscent of a lockup converter disengaging or coming out of OD. Upon clicking the stick to + the ECO indicator comes back on (no change in sound) but the RPMs drop back down again. So at the risk of saving my engine by not engaging the MDS system, some of you stand by your claim that there's no savings in mileage with MDS as compared to no MDS, cruising at 65mph and 400-500 more RPM as opposed to letting the MDS shut off 4 injectors and run at 500 lower RPM????
You had me at quick & straight-to-the-point 👍
Love your UA-cam videos I have a few questions regarding upgrades for better performance on my 2016 wagon.
the best informative video about ECO mode on a ram , ill try the tow haul mode !!
dragging around four dead cylinders...that would be like I was married all over again
🤣
@@stumplimit I may be wrong, but I believe only the intake valve is closed. I'm Pretty sure I'm right. Ah, what the heck do I know.. I'm never right. At least that's what I've been told by my Wife
@@stumplimit You know what, I never thought of that. I appreciate your defense of the non-use the MDS system. Not only that, I agree with you about not using it and disable it every time I get my truck into Drive. The drive-by-wire and soft shifting transmission are enough of a delay in responsivness. The point of my message wasn't disagree with you. Maybe we both need to do some research, but at the moment I don't like the idea a four cylinders shutting down. For one thing the exhaust sounds different and not in a good way. But what really makes me think it maybe isn't the best idea is because I know that in a multi cylinder engine, smooth operation, power generation and sound are somewhat affected by the Scavenging effect from running cylinders. So... I don't know.. maybe this isn't an issue on Modern engines. I still own a 78 Ford for crying out loud
In Cognito
Lmao😂
Lmao
I own a 2015 ram with the 5.7 and 8 speed trans. my truck will run mds at any speed under 75 usually with Hwy tires and good gas but when it comes to a half ton ram 2015 - 2019 classic the only way to disable MDS it to turn manual mode on turning tow and haul on does not disable mds in the half ton line The only issues with mds I’ve personally seen are with the mds lifters because of the size/weight of the mds lifters they can wear out faster than traditional lifters at least that’s my understanding I like mds at certain cruising speeds but if the rpms are too low it makes a little vibration I don’t like. I recently bought a 2019 with e torque and it doesn’t seem to go into mds mode as often and there is no mds vibration/shutter the transmission also seems a little smoother although it’s the same trans as my 2015. I’ve had many rams over the years with and without mds, I’ve never had major problems with any of them
Had a 1500. While I agree with this if you don't want to buy a tuner...the tuner has wheel correction, transmission tuning, engine tuning, etc. Living in the mountains at 4500 ft up to 10,000 feet it really helps the truck. I gained 3 mpg on a mountain loop over stock.
what brand/type of tuner, just got a 2016 1500 classic and am not happy about 4 cylinders just hangin out doin damage to cam/lifters
@@lawrencejoy9346 I got a Flashpaq F5 but don't have the truck anymore. It was great while I had it though.
Didn't know that info. Ram all the way!
Great tip. Thanks for posting. 👍🏼
Very helpful TY for the video! BTW Illinois does suck lol
Love the channel !
so what kind of mpg are you getting overall with the 6.4? Your truck is the exact one I wanna get!
So how did it screw up your transmission?
Hey. Thanks for the video. Did the exact thing. Though trial and error. 👍
any way to make the Hemi a Dodge neon 4cyl
I am dealing my 2011 with mds for a 2019 with 5.7 hemi . Are the newest versions still
Problematic ?
I was on the freeway with my ram that I recently purchased it’s used a 2014 1500. Accelerated and the motor cut out at 104 Mph it was like a governor kicked in with that be the MDS? Let me know thanks
Awesome informational educational video experience Y'alls
What happens if you do both the tow/haul and the shifter method at the same time? I guess unless you were planning to only shift up to a certain gear, for example 5th gear, the shifter method wouldn't really have any effect if you were in the tow/haul mode.
All the tow haul does is add rpm’s to a shift and down shift upon braking. All the manual shifter does is suggest what gear you want the truck to be in. If it needs to be in a lower gear than what you suggest it will do it own thing.
I have a 2010 5.7 2500 and i have had my mds being really finicky. Honestly its not even working because im getting 9mpg average.. I plan on getting mds completely bypassed using the chip you can put on the gas peddle which is what my local shop guys recommended. Does anyone have the system or has had any problems with it? Need the help.
so i have 2019 ram 1500 5.7 hemi... if you set that gear on the right to 8 it will still shift up and down automatically? or do you have to manually shift up and down all the time?
If I would run in Tow Haul 100% what would it do for gas milage? My truck is a 2010 1500. Thanks
Thanks for the information good instructions
In the left gauge cluster what does that icon with the up and down arrows with the truck in the middle mean? It looks like the wheels and tires glow orange. I can’t find it any where.
that sounds like a exhaust brake on a truck lol I kind of like it
In the case of the 5.7 Hemi, one of the inherent reported problems was cam wear over time. In further researching this the cams that were wearing done were the cams related to the cylinders shut down by the MSD system. My solution has been as you show switching out of ECO mode. Using the Tow button lowers gas mileage (it is the same as putting a performance chip in the unit). As far as gas mileage, (200,000 miles and still sounding like a new engine) the ECO mode actually improves very little over turning it off. You need to burn the same amount energy to maintain the same speed running four or eight cylinders. I know some would dispute said statement but it is true. The computer compensates with fuel to the injectors to make up the difference.
What tuner did you use?
My 2016 2500 with 5.7 doesn't show a green light for Evo mode coming on. How can I tell if it's got mds
Tow/haul down shifts a gear also.
Do you have to do this everytime you start the truck? Or does it save your settings?
Haha might work on the 6.4 and maybe some of the newer trucks, but kills fuel economy on my 2012. First of all the tow/haul mode on my truck just completely disables 6th gear. I guess it can be said that the eco mode did not come on at all, but I also burnt half a tank of gas in a day of my normal driving. Also the gear select on the older trucks (at least mine) does not disable MDS according to my cluster, however does seem to give slightly better response.
I have a Jeep Commander with Hemi and I wished the MDS was MORE AGGRESSIVE. So how can I make it stay on longer???????????????????
2019 - RAM 1500 5th Gen's don't have the ECO mode. Tow/Haul is the only way to disengage the MDS System...(I was wondering if the 6.4 Hemi's had MDA).
IWrocker, I watched this video yesterday (3/7/20). So, this morning on my way to work, I tried the tow/haul mode 1st. My mds/eco mode kicked in after 35mph. However, by using gear selection plus/minus it kept my mds/eco shut off. Thank you for the video.
Do you know if programmers can deactivate the mds permanently?
@Flip Loco my ram is a 14. I've gotta keep it in the gear mode, in order to not have eco kill my exhaust note. I'll probably have to get non mds lifters, a mild cam and tuner to deactivate completely.
Non mds lifters, a cam, and a tune will do that for you bud
I have a 2008 5.7 I turn off the over drive then I get the whole engine moving when I merge onto freeway I turn it back on
Turning over drive off has no effect on acceleration.
@@dakotakelly9371 it does it gains a second or 2 in performance because the switch from 4 to 8 is not efficient
@@davidsquarepants1256 That would be tow/haul mode that your talking about and it does in fact change the shift points. Simply locking out overdrive does nothing performance wise however.
5.7 2016 limited. Don’t know if I have it or not

The reason the roads are so bad is because someone decided to remove all the feet pads on the snow blades. .now the actual blade scrapes the road instead of being up a bit. .so everything it hits it chips up..thanks smart person for all of the pot holes
how do you verify that it isn’t just the eco mode indicator not coming on?
What exhaust do you have?
I'm in central Illinois. Just got a 17 Ram 2500 6.4, crew cab long bed.
Serious question. I just bought a power wagon of my own sounds like yours and mine are set up very similar. I'd like to know what kind of exhaust you have cause that's the sound I'd like on mine.
On my 2017 ram when in tow it's like it won't shift all the a way to 6 wish there was a way I could get my tpms trash hold lowered so I wouldn't have to clear it out every time I crank it
Video was the answer. Thank you!
Always been a Gm fan, recently got a ram 1500 for a nice deal however and I noticed it’d “bubble” I figured it’s in 4 cyl sure enough I was right, thanks for the video really annoys me with the excessive shifts
Just tried this on my 2021 DT 1500 Laramie with E-Torque Tow haul cancels out MDS on mine awesome thanks
in a 1500 with an 8 speed tow haul doesnt deactivate it, but putting the trans into "manual mode" does.
How do you put it in manual mode
MAN that thing is a beast!
My 2017 tow/haul mode mds still kicks in.
I have a 13 and it doesn't come on with tow haul on... guess they changed it... its stupid if you're hauling you want all 8 cylinders running
@Put'URmouth ONtheCURB you are correct... its not suppose to activate
@@scottrussell6717 If you have any weight behind the truck eco mode won’t engage in the first place so that argument is in invalid.
straight to the point no bullshit subscribed
Realize, that your mds lifters are actually getting more oil in 4 cyl mode.
Oil pressure to the lifter bore is what lets the lifter collapse.
The best way to do this is delete the mds solenoids with the proper plugs, and replace your lifters, and get a tune. Then the lifter bores get xtra oil all the time.
Ive noticed about 3 mpg difference in my challenger but im sure a heavy truck gets less.
It’s the non mds lifters in that engine that fail as they are starved of oil I’m told.
I have 6.4 Mega Cab and I don't think MDS comes on nearly enough. I wish I could manually keep it engaged.
Turn off MDS. Save the lobes on the camshaft from wearing down.

Does the same procedure work on a 8 speed ?
Hey Ian,have the same truck, but I am tired of shifting the damm plus EVERY TIME I get in the truck!
Isn't there a way to shut down the MDS for good?? Help
John Urech Perhaps somebody could recommend a good tuner . That should give the ability to just shut it off completely. I don't have a tuner but want one eventually
Let me know if you find a tuner for our truck, I'll probably get it too.I really hate knowing the engine is running on 4 cylinders WITH the vibration! UGH!!!
What I don't get is why they don't give you an option to just disable it on the display completely like on the Hellcat you have an option to leave it in 707 horsepower mode all the time or 500 horsepower or eco mode
Hey I just purchased a 2019 2500 6.4. It has the 8 speed. Is it ok to stay in continuous tow mode.
Mr. Puchel I have a 2019 6.4 as well and use the gear selector to delete the mds. Using the tow mode button will alter your shift points and also burn more fuel since the truck will hold a gear longer therefore a higher rpm before shifting to a higher gear (great for towing but not so much when empty). It is somewhat of a hassel having to scroll to 8th gear everytime you go somewhere but doing it this way only deletes the mds and doesn't change anything else (shiftpoints).
You don't have MDS at all, it's only on 1500s.
@@snek9353 Read a manual !
Good explanation 👏
MDS is also on the 6 and there is no issue at all. Why? I am over 200K miles and still going.
I have a 2017 Ram 1500 5.7 and never seen the Eco light on, why is that. mine is a 8 speed automatic, is that why
It should have it, I have a 2019 1500 5.7... it has the MDS. Mine had the settings for the light to come on switched on from factory. Some people have it off from factory. That’s just the indicator light though, because it’ll mds will stay on regardless of the indicator setting you have set. Try going into settings and finding it
Depending on which model you have there are different instrument clusters. I have a 2016 express, it is not a green light but rather says ECO at the top left of the center information display. The indicator can be switched on and off by going into your settings of the Uconnect radio (It does not turn off the MDS just the indicator)
Got a 2008 hemi with MDS. Want to disable it. If I use the tow / haul mode on mine will it work like your 2015 truck ?? Reason I want it off is I've been hearing horror stories about my 5.7 hemi. They say the valve seats come loose and one cause is the MDS being on making the heads different temperatures on different parts of the heads causing havoc. Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks Man
I am not sure if it will work on older 2008 era trucks... but I agree, if you can disable MDS then it will save a world of trouble and make Hemi engines last way longer... they are really solid engines
@@IWrocker Actually mds has been proved to add longevity to the engine. When it is engaged and the lifters lose oil pressure that oil is redirected back to the cam, which is where these engines have a lack of lubrication to begin with.
@@dakotakelly9371 Really that is the first time i have heard this, all i have read or heard was the opposite.
Dude I'm so glad I found your channel, I baby my sport lol. Your truck is sick, love it . I want to get an exhaust system, any recommendations? 🤘🤘🤘🤘
Corey Kearns thanks man! I def suggest Magnaflow or black widow for the Hemi . Or straight side pipe like my setup ! Haha sounds amazing in person
Carven!!!
I would say Corsa i have it on my 2012 Grand cherokee 5.7 and it sounds great
I have flowmasters on my dodge hemi 1500 and sounds deep and loud I get plenty of complaints from it being to loud😂
Flowmaster super 10
Good vid and yes, Illinois roads suck! I'm all familiar with them.
I did this in my Jeep Grand Cherokee and I put 130k and no lifter issues. Also I drove from Orlando to Miami with eco mode on, then drove back to Orlando in all 8 cylinders and the fuel mileage was exactly the same. It doesn’t save you any gas. All it does is destroys your motor.
So I have a 14 ram 1500 hemi. I have the 8 speed transmission. Found out the tow haul won't shut off the eco mode or the shifter buttons on the steering wheel. On the radio go to settings then display scole down to fuel saver it should be on press off and it won't come on again. So you can do this instead of spending money on programming
So what your saying is you should have gotten a tuner bc it screw up your transmission
2009 4th Gen here. Truck just started shuddering here and there in fuel saver mode. My shifter is not on the steering wheel
The plus/minus buttons should be on the column shifter. Simply press the minus button once until you see a 5 on the dash indicating the highest gear it will go into is 5th, thus deactivating mds.
How do I deactivate the mds for a 2017 DodgeDurango RT?? Many thkx and big like😎🙏
How do you do this in an 08?
Had my truck for 3 days before I reloaded this . Got help u if u needed a video .
You right. It is a goofy shifter.
I went out of my way to find a 6 speed just because of the shifter I have a 2017 with a 6 speed.
How do you do this on a 1500 model

In Grand Chreokees, you just run on towing.
Are you sure your truck didn't fail because you were beating it?
putting it in manual mode deactivates MDS in the 8 speed.
Sir Brellin Correct. I do it every time I get in the truck. The “tow/haul” trick does not work on the 1500’s with the 8 speed auto.
It does in my 2011 5 speed shiftabul automatic as well
It also deactivates eco on my 2013 6 speed .
With price of gas in Canada jumping up everyday I am starting to appreciate my MDS!
Gives me another 50-75 km in a tank on my 05 Magnum RT
did you do the math ,i.e. is that somewhat accurate.
My truck actually gets better MPGs without the MDS in combined driving but I live in the middle of nowhere Tennessee and most of my driving is on back roads..

My 06 2500HD doesn't have MDS. Only the 1500's had MDS on the third gen trucks.
Just use the gear limiter buttons on the steering wheel. If your in "manual" mode it disables mds. You can just use the +/- put it in 8th & it will shift like normal with no mds
Thats what I have been doing with the 2023 Ram 2500 6.4 Big Horn I just bought. Hope it doesn't hurt it in the long run...
Does tow mode turn it off?
I think that the best reason to delete the MDS is that the oil flow will be better to all the cylinders with the MDS out and those plugs in. The lifters would get better oiling. I wish I knew about that a week ago before my 2 cylinder started misfiring. Its not the plugs, coils or injector and it has a dead spot when cranking. I don't know how I'm going to pay to get this fixed either?
I have had some people say yeah but you disable the Eco and it hurt your gas mileage. Well I have taken my truck out and run the cruise control with the Eco shut off between 55 and 60 mile per hour on our secondary roads, and I seen maybe only a mile per gallon difference. But honestly I did not buy this thing for the mileage I bought it for the looks. So in my opinion screw mileage. When I get in that thing and fill it up with gas I'm heading somewhere where I don't give a s*** about mileage LOL. So just use the paddle shifter depending on what transmission you have, mine has the 2013 6 Speed, and run it off from eco. Have not noticed any issues, no noises... Nothing
Is having the tow haul mode on at all times bad for the truck ?
Yes I wouldn't do it... run it in 6 or 8 gear is safest way
It will only go as far as fourth gear in T/H mode, kills the already awful fuel mileage.
According to what year you got mine is a 2016 I just put it in 8th gear without the tow haul mode on and my MDS is off unless I put it in just drive and go
@@Doodlyscott i actually get better mileage on the highway with tow/haul on 2016 ram 2500 6.4l
