This is a great video . Based off of this video I went ahead with the Akai mini's older brother the MPK 249 . My reason is one, my fingers are bigger so "Mini" keys aren't in my favor . Two, I like the option of having more than 8 pads for drum programming since I like to jam "live" on pads . Three, having more faders available at one time will help with automation for me . I thank to thank you for detailed information you provided . It made my decision a solid one .

I am not good with computers and software though and would like to avoid that route as much as possible. What would be a good beginner route to go? Plz help me out; im new at producing music. Im a giutarist and played over many years in bands, doing gigs and recrding songs. But never did the Job then only playing the guitar. The only thing i knew; the man behind the controllers used Cubase, so i bought Cubase Elements 10.5.
Was this a mistake? So i only heard about Ableton live or for doing electronic music Fruity Loops should be a nice choice, whats the reason to use Cubase? Okay, here is my main question:

I use Cakewalk and I record a mix of metal and electronica.
I'm looking for a MIDI controller to program drums and make EDM samples and loops. Beginner here, I can use my DAW for guitars but this is the first time I'll be using a MIDI controller. I'm planning on making very simple electronic samples and loops {comma} so I'm thinking a smaller controller with pads and keys is what I'm looking for...
Any ideas on what I should grab?

    Hi Taetro!
I think I need your help in making a decision which is hopefully the first one of many others in this field!
I am a beginner and I really can't decide between the Novation Launchkey Mini MK3 and the Arturia Minilab MK2.
I see many reviewers preferring the Novation and I get why (it's much newer and has better functionalities), however the materials look pretty cheap compared to the Minilab. I need a small keyboard to start, not necessarily to bring in my bag. I need good sounds, good feeling and I am going to mainly use Ableton (not necessarily just that), since I am trying to learn using it. Being an absolute beginner, which one do you think would be better? I just don't want to make the wrong choice.
And I would do this purchase with an eye to the future, considering further upgrades when I'll get better.
Please, let me know which one you think would be better, considering they have the same price!
    Thank you!

    • @cactus_cba
      @cactus_cba 4 роки тому

Easy, you just can't make a wrong choice between these two, both are excellent controllers, I have a launchkey mini mk3 and it's not clunky at all, the keys are not that great but it not feel cheap by any means and the workflow is as better as you can get with a daw, in the other hand the akai is also great, you loose some functionality but if for some reason you get tired of ableton you still will have a excellent controller for other daws. If you think you will stick with ableton just pick launchkey, if not sure, akai, you still can map the pads and knobs to anything you want so is not such a big deal the benefits of lk mini, you still can do pretty much anything, just need to do some clicks more in the daw instead of the controller but you will have you pc right there so no big deal, I will stick with my lk mini :)

5:03 Nope. The big three overall used DAWS are Ableton, Logic and Cubase. Yeah, FL Studio, Studio One and Pro Tools come close. But overall it's rare to see a composer use FL Studio for example. If we're talking stricly mixing I'd even swap out Ableton with Pro Tools still.

It's very sad to see, that there is no single product for users wich are into digital synths. I need a keyboard with cc mapping and the maximum anmount of knobs and sliders but there is no way to buy a midi controller for that particular reason. I mean... who need drumpads on a midicontroller when you can use the keys for binding your daw drum machine to a single key? Thats wasted room for aditional sliders and knobs I think but anyway... good video and thank you

    Excellent explanation.
    One question though.
All these controllers have pads that you can use for finger drumming but also to control eg Ableton workflow.
I noticed all these controllers have a maximum of 8 pads horizontally.
But when watching eg Ableton Live videos on youtube most people have more than 8 tracks (eg a drum track, guitar track, piano track and so on).
How can you quickly jump to eg the first clip in the 9th or 10th track to launch it, stop it, record to it and the like if you only have 8 horizontal pads that you can immediately push on ?
Is there a scrolling option on these midi controllers so that you cannot only very quickly scroll vertically through the clips in a track but also scroll or jump quickly horizontally to tracks beyond the 8th track ?
    Kr

Purchased the minilab mkII a few weeks ago, and it is such a solid controller. Feels and looks amazing, probably the nicest piece of hardware on my desk! For someone new to learning and making music the included software is such a great starting off point. Ableton Live Lite is great as everyone knows, but realistically DAWs seem plentiful at literally every price point. Analog Lab Lite was the real value for me, there are so many instruments perfectly set up for the controller and extremely easy to find. I honestly think that the minilab is the best option for absolute beginners for that reason.

I gotta get myself a laptop so i can take my stuff with me out in nature. I already got both the "Electribe 2" synth and sampler, but they are a bit too limiting on their own IMO, and a laptop is by far the most versatile portable option for making the electibes fun to work with. I also got the Akai "MPD 218" and the Novation "Launch Control XL", which i also think are really nice options for laptops. I think the 8x2 pad layout on the electribes are really good together with the different "scales", so you get one octave (+ the first note in the next octave) on each row. Trying to make melodies on a 4x4 pad layout with a standard "chromatic" scale is very unintuitive IMO...

I was going to get the Novation MIDI controller, but decided that I am purchasing the Novation MiniNova Analog Modeling Synthesizer. I am then going to use the midi out to plug into my Korg MS200R and have the audio for both patched into my Alesis MultiMix 8. I think I will be able to create some interesting sounds that way.

Very clear, informative and relaxed overview, necessary in this huge market. So many proposals depending on the usage. Thank you Taetro.

All the available midi controllers are kind of the same. But I get it, you are supposed to buy separate controller for each software... Redundant. Also, there is a controller called Conspiracy, made by Samson, which is actually good once you map it manually.
The other thing that gets on my nerves that knobs have markings, like in the middle, but midi CC messages are 0-127 steps, there is no middle, so the markings are wrong on most devices.
If you want a good controller, that is actually accurate, make your own.

Great video, Taetro. Is it okay if I use this video in an article I'm working on?

Hi Taetro, great overview, but you forgot my favorite MIDI contoller: eDrums.
I came to all that stuff: MIDI, Looping, Ableton through eDrums.
I comment with a twinkle in my eyes. But one could mention it, because there a several drummers using the edrums to trigger loops, play chromatic instruments or trigger filter envelopes.
Thanks for all your input. I love this channel. And love MIDI controllers.

I’m trying to get a new midi controller or keyboard now but I have not found anything that will let me control 16 different midi channels and layer without getting a flagship keyboard workstation. I’m trying to use my iPad for sounds and possibly connect to my Juno ds which has 16 zones but I can’t control them all on the fly with sliders and knobs without menu diving. Try to control volumes from the iPad screen is just not comfortable. I see the NI controllers have 16 zones but it’s my understanding I cannot layer them all because the zones cannot overlap.

Is there a midi controller that can record my sequence and loop it and ideally can control multiple hardware and loop multiple synth at once a bit like a loop station, but sending different sequence to different synth at the same time? I have a couple things like a reface dx and 3 volcas and I'm having trouble figuring out how to achieve that instead of using the built in sequencers

I found the keystep pro, but it is a little bit too expensive. Alternatives?

The last 2 are super sick! The Novation circuit groove box is something I’d want but GEEEZ! It’s a little too expensive for me 😭

Which MIDI controllers would work best with Mixcraft 9? This is the DAW I’m currently working with and I have been interested in adding more digital strings etc into my Harp instrumentals but I want to ensure that I choose the best controller possible.
