You know the one weakness of the 60D you purchased is that it doesn't have live auto-focus in video shooting like your camcorder does. I think autofocus is useful a lot of the time. The ability to go between manual and auto is even more useful. Although there is aftermarket firmware made for DSLR's to make them better for filming. I know professional TV productions which have used 5D Mk2 and Mk3's to film whole episodes. Believe it or not the 70D and 80D do have that function. In fact the 70D really is the "dogs bollocks" (English saying for really good). A lot of big name UA-camrs record all their stuff on 70D. The other thing that you can easily add shooting on DSLR is external hot shoe mounted micophone to improve audio quality. A lot of pro's use the Rode Videomic Pro or Videomic Go for that purpose. Don't send the 50mm lens back either. The aperture on that thing goes up to F1.8 which is huge, great for low light or shallow depth of field at that price. It is superior to the 18-55 kit lens you got. Almost no distortion on the 50mm either. The best thing to put the 50mm lens on is the full frame camera. 5D Mk2's have come down in price and there are also 6D's knocking around now second hand. I myself have a 5D Mk3 and a 500D. Lenses is what gets you with DSLR's. The cameras are less important to a degree You might want the EF-S 10-20mm lens if you start shooting on DSLR. Very wide angle. If you need a telephoto the 70-300mm lenses can be found cheap second hand. I have a EF-S 18-200mm lens i take with me on holiday for photography. I also have a F2.8 40mm pancake lens i use sometimes to save space when i take my camera some places. For low light and astrophotography at wide angle there is a F1.8 28mm lens or a Image Stabilized IS 24mm F2.8 lens that i use. The 28mm can be found pretty cheap. It isn't IS. Macro photography i like the F2.8 100mm macro lens. Although i think there is a 60mm made by someone else like Tamron which is good. If you ask me i think the Sony camcorders have the edge for value and production quality on the basis of "bang for buck" a bunch of the smaller automotive repair channels use them. I can see the attraction as well because they are relatively inexpensive and survive quite a beating and exposure to oil, brake clean and other crap. Nice repair.
I had the same problem, but before sending it to the service, I decided to try to move that pin a little bit with a small knife, without disassembly the body... and YEEEY, it's working perfectly now. I think in the future I will not remove the card from the device and I will transfer all the images through the USB cable to the PC (with all my cameras).
nice video - 2 things - nobody has mentioned CHDK yet (if I am not mistaken). Canon Hacker's Development Kit. Basically lets you override many if not all setting and you can execute scripts. Intervalometer comes to mind with your new workshop project. You mentioned you had taken 150 GB of footage or so. I guess a lot of it is just hours of you stepping up and down a ladder painting the wall or something, so set the fixed focus with good lighting , take a pic every 4 seconds or so and you are good to go, just make it into a video. Another nice script is the lightning photography script. Basically takes the sport out of lightnings completely. Would surely work with welding and everything involving sparks. Take a picture if something (expectedly) blows up, sparks or something. The second thing is, there are very cheap brackets on ebay and amazon which connect to the tripod screw ('schraubzwinge' style). It allows you to attach the camera to a bookshelf or other board on the wall in your shop. It gives you the top-down perspective you see in so many cooking videos nowadays (bowl, put stuff in, chop onions, mix....). I could imagine it works for soldering, breadboards and the like. Have fun with the camera!
That 60D was a perfectly usable camera for tethered studio shooting, non-functional SD slot or otherwise; the same goes for that 20D. The light, composition and lens matter more than the body. Either way good job on the fix. If you really want to see how good your photos can look then Lightroom is worth the trouble.
Clever fix, and a good score on the 60D for half price! The Canon 50mm lens is known in my circle of friends as "the plastic fantastic". It has very nice quality and is fast, but the fixed focal length is certainly a limiting factor.
Excellent job on the repair! Nice practical solution. Glad you were able to get it back together. Also, congrats on sorting out your living situation. The internet certainly makes the world a lot more accessible. Looking forward to your comparison vids on your cameras.
Excited to find this video, there's a used 80D right now for dirt cheap because of a "faulty SD card slot" and the seller says it doesn't write images so it has to be used only by USB tether. If your hack applies to this camera I just found an upgraded camera body for less than I could get a 70D.
Congrats on the new room then! Also, nice addition to your camera workforce :) BTW, the old CF cards (before flash memory became cheap and readily available in huge capacities) were actual micro drives, so you had an actual miniaturized hard drive with one, or I think sometimes even 2 platters in there!
I also have a 60D that I've used for professional photography for the past 4 years. If you are interested I highly suggest you to take a look at Magic Lantern, I've been using it for 2 years and it's amazing! Great for taking still pictures with all the great features, but it's just the best experience I've ever had when making videos with it. The amount of flexibility and control it gives me is just great, also being able to have the mic levels and focus points all the time makes the camera even more powerful for the amount of money I've paid for it! I think you should definitely take a closer look into it.
Hello, many thanks for your video, i've solded bypass and now i can again take photos. I can't even describe how much happy i am now. But there are two things which are not mentioned in video: 1) When you reassembly the top cover, on the bottom of display hinges are cutouts which have to be pressed under the hinges mount plastic cover, using screwdriver or plastic spatula (rather than screwdriver, you will not damage plastic cover of camera), otherwise the display will not correctly sit down when closed and pop out back. 2) When you disassembly the cover, small spring, which open the lid of card reader slot will pop out of its plastic stop and must be gently placed back using small pincette. For all of you, which will be disassembly 60D i have screws cheat sheet, using transparent double side ducktape can asure, that you will place all screws back correctly: drive.google.com/drive/folders/1sEAEifesKIrBbafmd7tP1EIlHck9QJx-

I'm a Nikon guy due mainly to the backwards compatibility with older lenses. However, there is little or nothing in terms of results attainable, between the two makes. Great video and very interesting...
Love your videos, glad to hear you got the new room quickly & hope things continue on the upswing for you in 2017, expecting more interesting content from you!
Nice job. I am betting that SD electronic card can be bought and installed if you ever want ot get read only function back. I agree there is little need for that in a camera. Cameras do not over write anyway....if the card is full they refuse to take a picture.
For anyone thinking about following the advice and buying the Sony camcorder, it does not have an external microphone input, and the newer versions of it (YEARS newer) are only a few dollars more at $200 new. I'm sure it was great in its day but that day is done.
The 50mm lense is certainly of better quality than the variable lense in this video, but I'd need a wide angle lense for most of my shots. I guess I will buy a couple of better lenses over time, but will use the variable lense for now.
Isn't it the stock Canon F/3.5 18-55mm lens? You should really get a better one, with lower F number and improved image quality. Lenses are usually more imporatant (in terms of image quality) than the camera bodys.
mount an SJ4000 in the flash shoe, for a wide angle backup of every shot. This is the 2nd time I've recommended one of those to you. Last time was to use the LCD in a projector. I'm not an SJCAM salesman, I promise.
To anyone doing this be extremely careful using a metal tool to manipulate the flat flex cables its extremely easy to damage them. I suggest using something plastic instead.
I guess everyone said this by now already, but don't send back the 50mm prime. It's sharper than the 18-55 (I have that one, came with the 450D). It also has a much wider aperture which is better if you ever need low-light capability.
good video mate. glad you got a room. my friend has a 20d your right its so old. i have a nikon d3200 with the 18-55 lense. did you know crop frame cameras give multiplied zoom compared to full frame. i use a lumix t75 point and shoot aswell that has manual modes
Well done :-D, the write protect isn't important. I'm glad it wasn't me trying to do that, my close up vision isn't as sharp as it used to be. But there is an advantage, i look better in the mirror LOL :-D :-D.
You should keep your Sony camcorder for videos. The video quality is a lot crisper and clearer on the Sony than the Canon. The Canon is not designed to do videos anyway.
*****, yes but that is what a technician have to deal with normally. When you do not want to disassemble such devices, do not do the job. ;-) But I know what you mean. I have seen a video of someone desoldering the flash storage chip from his mobile phone's logic board. With a lighter. And then he soldered the new one on it and upgraded his phone from 16 to 128gb. I was scared a bit, too. But in comparison, what TPAI does here is way less dangerous.
Great video! Thanks for showing how to take apart, very useful. Do you use an external microphone or just the one on the camera? Nice clear audio. Good luck with the move.
Time to focus on audio. A mic and small ~4 channel mixing board and sound card. Mic should be portable if possible. This will impact video quality much more than going beyond HD.
I've noticed that people that understand a good knowledge of fixing their own equipment that its kind of boring listening and watching but can tell they are smarter than the guys that post videos of hacks and shit but they know not a damn clue how to fix it and the video is just so unprofessional.
"Professional" cameras these days. That clip in there is just sad. It doesn't hold up in use. Better just use usb cable when taking pics out of that it seems. I have a 2003 model 10D that works like new till this day. Sadly no filming videos or any of that but great reliable still camera.
I looked for replacement parts on ebay, but the ones I found (shipping to Germany) where all between 30 and 40 €. You also have to wait a long time and possibly visit the customs office to pick it up (if you're in bad luck).

MASSIVE FOOTAGE UPGRADE looks awesome can't wait for the comming videos
I love my 60D I also have a 70D but the 60 gets the most use.
Happy moving lol glad you got sorted out and hopefully a bit more stable.

Love your videos, glad to hear you got the new room quickly & hope things continue on the upswing for you in 2017, expecting more interesting content from you!
I got the same problem on the card reader on my notebook. Thanks for the video TPAI :)
Lol at that 32MB SD card. One RAW photo capacity with the 60D!
Nice job. I am betting that SD electronic card can be bought and installed if you ever want ot get read only function back. I agree there is little need for that in a camera. Cameras do not over write anyway....if the card is full they refuse to take a picture.

Thank you .. couldn't figure out what was wrong and the camera repair shop was looking for €100 regardless to fix it . Cheers
You bought exactly the same set of cameras as I did, 20D to the 60D
All those flat-flex cables... my hands would be sweating.
good video mate. glad you got a room. my friend has a 20d your right its so old. i have a nikon d3200 with the 18-55 lense. did you know crop frame cameras give multiplied zoom compared to full frame. i use a lumix t75 point and shoot aswell that has manual modes
woohoo better video quality! Now you just need a nice shotgun microphone to pair with it!
Well done :-D, the write protect isn't important.
I'm glad it wasn't me trying to do that, my close up vision isn't as sharp as it used to be.
But there is an advantage, i look better in the mirror LOL :-D :-D.
Really good video. You should do more repair videos.
I got a 60D, brill camera. well worth the money
Hi bro. How do you think if I just soldering from card metal case to the ground without cutting the the card case? Will it work?
I'd be tempted to keep the EF 50mm f/1.8. The optical quality is much batter than the zoom lens.
You should keep your Sony camcorder for videos. The video quality is a lot crisper and clearer on the Sony than the Canon. The Canon is not designed to do videos anyway.
I have a Nikon d3500 an error shows up. Card inserted is damaged use another card I bought 4 an same error what do you suggest? Thank you
I have trouble reinserting the small ribbon type connections. Can you show how you accomplish this please?
Keep the 50mm f1.8, much better in low light situations allowing you to keep your ISO low = less noise:-)
TPAI, Have you seen the films SAW and Hostel? I can imagine asking for a room on UA-cam will get you a similar experience.
A good job well done! Very informative vid too, thanks.
An absolute *NIGHTMARE!* 😱
djdrwatson What?
Taking the camera apart. All of those little screws and ribbon cables. Many things could go wrong. Lots of patience needed.

Glad you got it going! Who uses write protect anyhow :)
Amazing job ..i got the same problem in 600 D canon ...
I hope you didn't send back the 50mm prime. Everybody needs the nifty fifty!
Great video! Thanks for showing how to take apart, very useful. Do you use an external microphone or just the one on the camera? Nice clear audio. Good luck with the move.
arrg just noticed youtube didn't put your last 6 videos in my sub box...
Well done, good sir. Pleased to be a patreon helper. Take good care.
I did the same thing with a Pentax ist dl. No repairs were needed... Fortunately.
Time to focus on audio. A mic and small ~4 channel mixing board and sound card. Mic should be portable if possible. This will impact video quality much more than going beyond HD.
wow this is so much easier to open compared to nikon dslr's.
Wish I had a nice digital camera.
Look up Canon EF-S 24 mm. f/2.8 STM. Quiet and lightweight.
Keep the Sony... shooting with two cameras (even if one isn't as good) gives you a lot more scope when making videos.
Wow =) First time no gloves? =)
+The Post Apocalyptic Inventor The dslr has better audio than the camcorder no hdd noise
I've noticed that people that understand a good knowledge of fixing their own equipment that its kind of boring listening and watching but can tell they are smarter than the guys that post videos of hacks and shit but they know not a damn clue how to fix it and the video is just so unprofessional.
Have you already learnt about 12 minutes limit on single video shot?
btw look for some 3rd party firmware for canon - i forget name.
Too much depth of field with the canon sensor with wide aperture. Keep the 50mm lens. Kit lens are f=3.5-5.6 vs 50mm f=1.8 .
can you make a gameboy in a camera
Great video
But when re assembled - no power!!!!! I guess I need to re open and make sure all connectors are in place
Anyone have this problem??
did you figure this out?
I have the same screw driver set :)
For the love of god get some Spudgers! quick like.
"Professional" cameras these days. That clip in there is just sad. It doesn't hold up in use. Better just use usb cable when taking pics out of that it seems. I have a 2003 model 10D that works like new till this day. Sadly no filming videos or any of that but great reliable still camera.
u can buy a new replacement part for the sd card slot from china for really cheap
I looked for replacement parts on ebay, but the ones I found (shipping to Germany) where all between 30 and 40 €. You also have to wait a long time and possibly visit the customs office to pick it up (if you're in bad luck).
Might want to check taobao or aliexpress, but yeah I agree you do need to wait.
Plus there is no guarantee it will be any good or as durable as the Canon original.
its called physics...
It was an awesome repair, I have been looking for this for almost 5 years since my 60D became a brick and customer service repair it but it damaged again just when guarranty was over. Can you help me, I didnt understand well were you have to solder I have to place a tiny wire from the point on the circuit board to the case where the pin was removed?
nice video! does anybody has experience with repairing micro sd slots from go pro cameras?
omfg u dont believe me i have the same SD-Card!11
like 20 mln people lol.

AFAIK that second type of ribbon connector is called a ZIF connector
ZIF is a generic term for all types of connector with a lever to apply the contact pressure. It stands for Zero Insertion Force. Other types rely on friction.
