    Steam Deck is a case where form follows function, it looks like it does because of the features it has, it may not look as good as another handheld, but it is more comfortable by leaps and bounds in so many aspects. I wouldnt change the look if I could because it would necessarily change the function also.

    To be fair.
    The 800p resolution is nothing to be laughed at. Pixel Per Inch PPI, is amazing in clarity and sharpness. It's a PPI of 206 which is insane. A 27" 1440p only has 108 PPI.
    Do not discredit the pixels for a low resolution. The clarity is amazing due to the density of the pixels!

    • @TechDweeb
      @TechDweeb  Рік тому +14

      Yeah it's crisp, but some games that are built for 1080p really struggle at that resolution (and size). The built-in magnifier is helpful but then it's very obvious how low res the text is when it's blown up.

    I never really got the "it's barely portable" thing. It's not that heavy, the case fits in my bag with all my other stuff, I can take it anywhere and play it unless I'm somewhere crowded, which would probably be an issue for any handheld. Like sure it's big but honestly I prefer it that way, it feels more comfortable being as big as it is and it still doesn't take up that much space.
    I never jumped on a portable console or handheld before, I never even got a switch due to how expensive it would be to buy the console and then also have to buy games for it. As soon as I found out about the steam deck though and heard the reviews people were giving it, I decided to jump on board. I already had a steam library full of games I enjoy playing, most of which can run on the deck for 4+ hours no issue (my personal favorites are probably Prey and Black Mesa), I have no issue tinkering with games on my own PC to make them work better so messing around with the deck wasn't an issue for me, and I have a fairly long train commute to my workplace that makes having something like the deck to pass time pretty good.
    I have tried emulation on it, and for classic games it works really well. I would, however, suggest not running emulators for more recent consoles like the switch or even the Wii U, especially breath of the wild (I couldn't get more than 2 hours on that game and it caused the fan to go crazy, you'll get better use out of just straight up owning a switch). Gamecube and Wii games work fine in my experience and can be run for up to 6 hours usually, though I don't own games for most other consoles so I haven't been able to test those, but I hear it generally works pretty well.
    The other benefit to the fact that the steam deck is basically just a PC is the easy access of modding, it can take a bit to set up depending on if the game has native support but it's pretty nice to have a portable handheld that I can also mod without jailbreaking it first, which I'm not confident in my ability to do.

      The whole “it’s barely portable” thing comes from Switch fanboys as well as fanboys of the competing companies’ direct alternatives (Aya Neo, GPD, etc) trying to downplay the Deck, kind of as a responce to a handful of SD fanboys referring to it as a “_______ killer.”
      It’s just squabbling idiots being squabbling idiots.

    • @chronossage
      @chronossage Місяць тому

      @@reaperreaper5098 It's not just switch fanboys. I love my deck but I also think even the switch isn't portable enough. The 3ds and psp used to fit in pockets with a nice case. The steam deck in case will fill 30%-60% of the volume of some of my more favorite bags and backpacks while my switch is 1/3 the size in it's case so it would only take up 10%-20% in the same bags. I think the steam is comfortable has hell in the hand but I would sacrifice that to be able to fit it in some of the same places I can fit a switch. I really like the look but not the price of the gpdwin mini. That said I wish everything was still pocketable which is probably why I have multiple miyoo minis and a funkey s.

    My biggest problem with the Deck was that the analogue stick material didn't feel good to me. I always found myself touching the edge of the sticks because the capacitive touch surface was so slippery, but then the edge is very rough that it started to hurt my thumb in the long run. What fixed this issue and made the Deck usable for me was that I bought some thumb grips. They made the sticks very comfortable to use! I bought them from Skull & Co. and I thought that I would lose the capacitivity of the sticks, and sure enough they warn in the shop page that the thumb grips are not capacitive. I don't know what it is, but sometimes it still works through the thumb grip! 😅

    The deck as a phenomenon is unavoidable. It's like the iphone in the sense that it's not necessarily original, but it IS the most successful. UNLIKE apple though, Steam has embraced the repair community AND the DIY community. They love seeing their device used in fun new ways and have worked hard to bring the PC gaming experience to their handheld. I worry that The ASUS ROG Ally might disrupt the market in a BAD way, but I think the steam deck is here to stay at least for a while. Outside PC gaming, the deck is also a beast emulation device, which was my #1 use case for it. I mostly play indie titles and old console games on mine. I played most of Tunic (an EXCELLENT award winning Indie,) on the Deck. I am glad you are participating in this one. Despite it's price compared to our more affordable retro gaming devices, it's a VERY good value in the PC gaming space. Similar spec laptops would be the same if not way more. This device was a win for gamers/ consumers I think.

    • @TechDweeb
      @TechDweeb  Рік тому +1

      I have a hard time believing that the Ally will compete with the deck for real. Not unless they can get out a low end model at a comparable price to the low end deck. It'll all come down to the price. If it's more expensive, even if it's way better performance, it'll be an 'enthusiast' product rather than a good choice for regular people (which have been KEY to the Deck's success). I'm happy with more competition though, even if it's the higher end offerings competing against each other - bring it on!

      @@TechDweeb not sure what they did, personally I upgrade my SSD to 1tb and partitioned it, Installed both. Have to say I'm not using windows that much on it, even with gamepass. But I'd recommend getting uwphook and set steam to start in big picture mode on it. Uwphook will put your gamepass games in steams ui and has the same controller functions in that UI. You'll also want "Steam Deck Tools". Mostly for the better fan curve and the controller hooking for outside of steams ui.
      The power stuff and etc, ehhhh I didn't bother with.

    Any ETA on your Deck emulation video? I, like you initially SWORE that I’d never need (or want) a Steam Deck because I was so happy with my RP2+ and RP3+. Once you showed me that I can stream Switch from my PC to the RP3+, I was in heaven. But after many months of enjoying my current handhelds, I’ve started wanting something larger (because I’m quickly becoming old and blind) and slightly more powerful (to play higher end games natively). The past month, I’ve gotten sucked in by all the hubbub about the higher powered entries like the ROG Ally and Legion Go…and after a little more research, I’ve now come to realize that the Deck is actually powerful enough do accomplish my gaming needs without paying $600-700. As the most common sense, and least biased content creator in the gaming community, I’d love to hear your experience with higher end emulators on your Deck when you get the capacity to make a video.

    The cool thing is, almost any handheld emulator will give one a Lifetime of games if they are down with the systems, the rest is either personal preference or just keeping up with the Joneses... if that's how ya spell joneses... Anyway, I have an rp2+ and I Love the "up to some gamecube" level, just right for me thus far, and I have other hobbies - this isn't my first love, I have spent more on a pen for cryin out loud. But that's right for Me. Just don't fall for the hedonic treadmill of always needing the next shiny thing if all you really need to do is play contra all day, or burger time. But when prices drop, tech advances, best bet I'll have another upgrade, just not now. And my rp2+ may go to a friend, and that's rad.just remember - if you're not having fun you're doing it wrong. The Ayaneo 2 is better, but it's WAY more expensive. I bought my Steam Deck in February with my tax return and I LOVE it. There are TONS of games that aren't verified by Steam which run seamlessly. Like Resident Evil 4: Remake. It's unverified but works perfectly. My biggest issue is the fact that anti-cheat software makes it tough to play certain games without ridiculous work arounds, like Destiny 2.
